Congrats! you won't see much of a diff at first, infact when i got mine i didn't like it lol. Was too used to the THM and having protect is damn nice. But once you see that as BLM soloing around the FF world you will notice that BLM is more resistant to stuff and can nuke mobs to ashes in no time you will start getting into it. Loads of fun indeed.
Some of the BLM abilities you get are a bit poor to be honest but in general its a fun class.

My SCH job skills are what turned my ARC into a fantastic healer.

Now what BLM job skills brought to my BLM ? Nothing special. A bunch of situational/useless spells.

BLM does bring a few things but i am still with you on that. BLM class does need working on.

I didn't say BLM's spells are good as they are.

But really, I hope you're not playing as a THM instead of BLM just because "waa BLM spells suck" because if you are I'll laugh.

No, because of gear restriction.
But some cross-skills THM can use are far superior to Apocastasis, Freeze, Convert, etc. No doubt.

As job skills.... :
Paladin got great defensive/tanking abilities.
Bard got the famous and useful support chants + a good AoE.
Dragoon got what defines dragoons... 4 jumps.
Monks got many different attacks.
Scholar got awesome heals/support.
WHM got good heals/support + an AoE.

And Black mage got Apocastasis, Convert, Freeze, Mana Wall, and an underwhelming Flare. Two of these powers are supposed to be Ancient Magics. I don't see how Freeze or Flare here are ancient magics. Freeze is probably one of the worst skill in the game. Flare is lacking power.

In my opinion, BLM, WAR, and SMN (except Fester) job skills are under all other jobs.

I wouldn't call Flare useless when you can use it with Raging Strikes and Swiftcast to insta cast an AoE that does 2.2k to all mobs it hits. Then you transpose and go back to full mana. Also, is it Manawall or Manaward that makes it so the Demon Wall or Titan's attack that knocks you off of the platform is just negated and you don't move?

On the flip side, I heard the best BLM is one that gets iLVL90 Allagan gear and unequips their BLM stone and now gets massive stats and the ability to use any cross class skills.

Yea it's really sad how all BLM skills are so bad that the cross skills are easily better.
