Final Fantasy VI is by far the best.

So many twists and turns in the story with great characters. And there are so many of them. Each one has a great story. There are very few moments that stick in my mind, but most come from this game. Setzer getting his airship in the World of Ruin. Kefka double crossing Ghestal, killing all the Espers and destroying the world. Celes and the opera scene. The Phantom Train. Sabin and Edgar had a great story about who would become King of Figaro. And of course the ending. It was just so good. Amano did the artwork, which is a huge plus. The music was the best in the series.

Basically, FFVI was a masterpiece. It was by far the most impactful game on my life.

Its FF7 for me. Its the RPG that started it all for me and I can play it over and over again. A very close 2nd is Xenogears all though not a FF it is a square RPG and it had one of the best plots and combat systems.

The entire raid on dollet was awesome. That said IX is the best. Zidane was hilarious, Garnet Til Alexandros XVII is my favorite female in the history of Final Fantasy, Freya was the coolest dragoon ever, and even the silly Quina Quen was a fun time. The only character that I didn't care for was Amarant.

FFT. Complex story, heavily involved, was the one of the few games ive ever played where i actually talked to (yelled at) the screen constantly.
A very close second would be FF3/6 because Kefka was the best villain in FFdom.

s/n: I seriously think, story wise, FF7 was one of the worse FF in the series, as it was overall boring. Just was something new at the time of gaming. But i couldnt even play it twice (which is bad since most FF ive played, ive played multiple times)

I'm pretty sure I have played nearly every FF game ever made in nearly the same year it was released (there are a few exceptions, XI, X-2, and XIII-2). That being said VI, IX, and XII stood out for me. VI is just a masterwork of storytelling and XII challenged the tactician in me to find interesting ways to alter my teams AI for any given encounter. IX was just such a fun nostalgia ride.

On the other side of the spectrum is FF XIII. I tried replaying that a few months ago and man....I didn't last an hour before I just gave up.

Only because I finished them, I'd say it's a tie between X and XIII. X because it seemed to strike the right balance in tone (not too campy, not too dark) and allowed a good deal of customization with the sphere grid. XIII was almost unfairly underrated. I liked that the story took priority for most of the game with things opening up late. Too many sidequests can be distracting to the main storyline.

For me it's Final Fantasy 6 and 4. Which one is better would be a really hard call to make. After 6 and 4 I would have to show some love for 5 and 2 simply because they are underrepresented right now. But really all of the FF titles were great in their own ways. I even enjoyed 13 a great deal, Sazh is still to this day one of my favorite FF characters.

I Really Loved XI, yeah it was mmo too, but made so many close friends!

The game was also challenging back in the days, I still remember the joy after my first Dynamis lord kill in 2005... ah the memories and emotions!

They had a way to make you have strong bond with other players, more then any other game I have played
