You would not can wear AF crafter gear and AF gatherer gear as vanity gear on battle classes
I can understand the concerns about immersion breaking, but this will always happen in an MMO - not everyone is concerned with immersion. Even now you could grab the 2nd starting racial gear (some of which are a horrific, lime color), mix and match it with coliseum gear and slap on one of those GOD AWFUL looking fluffy mittens you get in the lower levels (died another awful color) and the result is an absolute, immersion-breaking eyesore.
I say this as an avid RPer for whom immersion is important: we will ignore what breaks our immersion. You have to, because you can't control other players. As for dungeons, I can't even count how many tanks I've run dungeons with wearing bright, pastel pink all over their armor lol
For that reason, I don't think there should be any restrictions outside of being unable to slot gear into vanity that your toon could not actually wear (which thankfully YoshiP already said would be in place)
As a few others have said i don't think there should be any restrictions at all either. We already have npc characters wearing impossible combinations, Louisoix being a conjurer wearing plate legs, Papalymo wearing plate gloves, so can't see any immersion breaking in letting us do that too. I'd love for my mage to have some plate gauntlets and boots to go with my cloth body piece (plate and cloth mixes look so cool, just look at the garleans). I don't see why mages can't wear battle gear or vice versa, this is Final Fantasy, not Final Realism...
The game i've played that handled vanity items best was DCUO, almost no restrictions, only very few gear sets were class specific, i loved that freedom of costumization.
Oh and I'd love a shirt for my whm too, sad that they removed the mage versions from 1.0
And if pvp might be an issue, just disable vanity gear in pvp.
You beat me to it, I was going to point out that Yda wears plate leggings and Papalymo wearing plate gloves. As a few others have said i don't think there should be any restrictions at all either. Personally Yda's choice even makes a bit of RP sense. Assuming you trained yourself for it imagine how devastating a kick from plate boots would be.
So no seasonal, no cross class and no field/craft class for the vanity slot??? Wth is the point? All the armies look pretty much the same within your own class to begin with, therefore it is pointless.
For the other matter, leave " immersion" to the RPers and let the rest of us have our FANTASY.

I wouldn't mind an unrestricted vanity system so long as there is a toggle for the whole system.
Dress how you want, I'll just turn it off on my side only so I see the gear you are getting your stats from as well as not having to deal with someone thinking crafting AF chest, bikini bottoms, and reindeer helm is coolo battle gear (yes you can do that already but with DF soon going to be blocking you by average item level and no one accepting you in group for the stats that would provide, its not really like you could do it "normally" only in a world of unrestricted vanity could it "actually" happen).
Otherwise class & job restrictions, and no vanity gear... please...
The thought of what happens if neither of these go gives me weirded out shivers (lol), and may very well ruin my experience of the game. (Expansion comes out, SE puts in a lot of time to set up epic quest scenes- DF plops me into a beyond comical looking joke group, moment drastically lessened).

I agree 100% with the OP. The only restriction I could possibly abide is the "no DoM wearing DoW and vice versa" rule. Anything else is at best unnecessary and at worst utterly damaging to the feature.
Why can't we kill things in bikinis? Weren't the NPC girls in "Return of the King" wearing bikinis to fight that bomb? Maybe my eyesight is failing...These restrictions are very fair, nothing overboard, and nothing that completely kills immersion.
Speaking of killing immersion, maybe have the no seasonal restriction in just dungeons + PvP, you have to be able to kill things in bikinis somewhere D:< (Yes I'm a perv, I know)
I agree with everything except the "No seasonal gear". I was actually shocked you put that in the reasonable section. Any seasonal items they release do exist in the lore. They are things even worn by the NPCs during the events. If it exists within the world it exists.
No seasonal gear is not a reasonable thing. Not allowing that makes seasonal gear literally useless. I don't know any MMO that does not allow you to wear seasonal gear in vanity slots. That's one of the main reasons vanity slots came into existence in MMOs.
I think the Vanity should require a certain materia slot. Requires people to work for it or pay someone for a certain type of vanity meld.
