Perhaps the U tribe represents a matrilineal society. At the very least, it represents one where the females seem to retain the power of sexual selection in a way that most human tribes do not.

Closest literary example that comes to mind is Heinlein's `The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress`; in the lunar society, women called all the shots sexually when it came to choosing or rejecting partners. Males were more passive, though they still held an active role in society and government.

Well, I can try to shed some light on behavior, if nothing else.

Depending on tribe size, there are only a very small number of breeding males. The rest of the dudes, however few there are, don't really get to copulate. And since there's all those females for just a couple males...you see where this is going. The gals need to get their fix from somewhere, so it might as well be someone who's just as deprived as you, or willing to give you something (money, etc.) for your time. *shrug*

Another thing to consider is that there may be a a bit of pride to be a Miqo'te mother. As a Seeker, you were chosen by a male. Not just a male, but the male. The male is the best in the tribe at doing what he does, and he chose you. And your children get to take his name as their surname (assuming they are females). What an honor! All the ladies at the hunting camps will be so jealous!

You know how teenagers and soccer moms gush over attractive celebrities getting together? Same deal.

Keepers are a little tougher to reason. However, as a Keeper, you're in charge. You might decide to pass along your station as head of the household one day, and you're looking for a prospective candidate. You're not going to let some other House move in on you, so take up motherhood as a symbol that you and your stock mean to stick around.

I dunno. Some things to think about.

It seems to me that mating between the Nunh and the females of a Sunseeker tribe is more based on ritual than anything. There's nothing personal between the Nunh and any one female, but if you want the best possible kids then hopping in the sack with the Nunh is the way to go. It's one of the most basic survival instincts that's ingrained in living organisms: if you want your offspring to live, then you'll go for the best mate to ensure that. Outside of that, it seems they don't particularly care who they have sex with. The only thing I think they'd avoid is actually having kids with anyone outside of the Nunh, but that would most likely apply only to those who still remain in their tribe. If they're outside of the tribe (ie, living in Ul'Dah or some other city/settlement) then all bets are off, I'd imagine.

Talking to a lot of NPCs in the U Tribe, it was really interesting to read some of the incidental dialogue. In particular, there were some female Sunseekers gossiping about when they were next due for bedding by the Nunh. They used a term for it which is escaping my mind, I'll have to go back to the zone and find the text again.

I found this really interesting; copulating is scheduled between the female and Nunh. Is it based on her fertility cycle? Are there any other criteria? Does the Nunh have a secretary to keep track of his appointments?

As a Tia for the L Tribe, I look forward to seeing areas of settlement/camps of other Tribes in Eorzea. Go Vipers!

It seems the U are the only ones with an obvious structure and hunting grounds right now, whilst in Limsa and Ul'dah, members of the other tribes are indeed present, though they do not seem to congregate together and instead blend with the rest of the city.

The naming conventions thread goes into it a little.

Say, fellow cat, I have a small impression.
I have impression that certain tribes are more present in certain city-states. Also when you look at the one settlement of the U tribe you realize it is FAR too small in comparison to how many miqo'te of the U tribe are around the cities. I'm trying a census to know where each tribe is more prevalent, however.

Given their culture, it's not really surprising that the Seekers of the Sun tend to be a little promiscuous when they're separated from their tribe. They're probably conditioned or have natural instincts towards attracting males/mates/their Nunh, and I think that they show signs of that even when not living the tribal life is a little detail that makes their race more charming.

Also, I think we should take out-of-game lore details with a grain of salt. It was said that the Nunh isn't necessarily the tribe's leader, but the U clearly treat it as the boss position, and the "matriarchal" Keepers of the Moon of the Coeurlclaws are very affectionate towards their "king", if you listen to the random dialogue bubbles during the events.

Of course, one-off examples aren't proof of anything, but they're currently the only examples of them in-game.

Gotta remember that while a Nuhn isn't nescessarily the leader, he basically has to earn that post.
U'odh earned his post by pretty much killing a god, the Company of Heroes defeated Titan without even having the protection of the Echo. He, in particular, is gigantically badass and pretty damn fitting to his post both as nuhn and as a leader
