On more than one game i have used potions even in a farmstatus instances or events and in this game it would be incredibly folly to use any potion or foods for anything because of their costs in materials (mainly the shard/crystal).
I was thinking about this while doing titan. The fade on death makes food pricey and unwanted.
To be fair...
The Crystal tower is not implemented yet (This is about food, trust me)
So we have to go into Bahamut's coil in ilvl 70 gear. Trust me, you want everyone in your party with food. It can really mean the difference between victory and defeat.
Food is not worth even trying to use as is. I haven't been in a party yet where anyone but I used food. It either needs to be a lot cheaper to make or last through death.
The biggest problem is the water/fire shard cost, unlike other professions you typically make multiple food items at once, (like 10-20+). The actual ingredients are not so bad, but the shard costs (6 fire+water for one 45+ food) are much too high, on top of the shards required for the "base" ingredients like salt/oil/sauce.
I guess the same should go for alchemy potions also.
sell a dagger soup for half of server price (8k/2 = 4k) wait a minute for it to sell, repeat action. You will have earned back shard costs in no time!(The early food is crap, we know. But the endgame food makes the class really worth it.)
You might want to take up fishing, as fish gives control rating, control rating gives HQ craft chance, which again gives more gil in your pocket.
The biggest problem with food is that the content is usually too easy to warrant using it.
Make the game harder and it supports cooking at the same time!
Please fix Cooking!
seems to me that this keeps the shards worth mining/logging for and AHing...
otherwise, you cooks would have to go gather them yourselves ON TOP of cooking =P
