    [dev1008] About Jumping

From what I can tell, I along with many others hold the opinion that having a designated "jump button" that you could use at any time in this game would be rather obnoxious. However, a jump feature would certainly have uses, like getting over that small cliff that's slightly too big to walk over. Therefore, why not implement a system like the one used in FFXIII, where there are certain locations where you are prompted to jump, and you can only use the jump feature in these locations? Personally, I think that would be really cool.

We do NOT want jump. It will degrade the character and atmosphere of the game.

I second that, full-heartedly! Keep XIV a game like XI has been, targeting more mature audiences.

    Mature and Online don't mix.

Because mature people don't play games with a jump.

Are you kidding me? Like aggro indicators, guildleve holograms, quest markers (!), comical spell effects (spell defects more like), and a whole host of other features don't already degrade the atmosphere for you.

At least jumping is natural. People can say jumping is obnoxious all they like, but could they please care to explain how it actually IS obnoxious? Do you forsee people jumping all over your screen or something? Are you scared of plummeting to your death? Do you think MMORPGs and platform games are mutually exclusive for irrational reasons?

Because if you think any of those things, there is either an obvious compromise/fix or else you're just flat out wrong.

For example, if people jumping around ruins your immersion, then how about the idea that any jumping SE decides to add comes with a cool down? In real life, most people can't go jumping around without seriously becoming fatigued, so a cool-down timer reflects reality a little more closely.

How about the jump animations resemble very closely those in real life, such that it isn't obnoxious or distracting?

It's pretty short sighted to just dismiss free-jumping altogether without first weighing the pros and cons and considering a good compromise.

There are many pros for free jumping. For istance, it adds an entirely new dimension to exploration. Most people cite exploration in FFXIV as being unexciting, so a jump feature could add new heights to this aspect of the game, literally even.

I mean, can you please, for once in your life, remove yourself from the game worlds you know and envision something better?

I think there should be both climbing, clambering, and jumping. Climbing to get up onto cliffs heigher than one's own height, clambering to get over short ledges/obstacles, and jumping to get over small gaps.

My forehead is bright red from all the face palms I have been doing from reading all these posts. You guys are freaking out over such a harmless feature. Why don't you worry about the more serious problems with this broken game instead of going nuts about something as harmless as jumping.

I'm more partial towards the idea of a auto-jump, like in FFXIII, for multiple reasons. Overall, it would be easier to implement. Less changes would need to be made to the game itself. Less testing for exploits, and really, fewer chances of getting bugs, since it would only be used in situations the developers plan for, not everywhere they dont.

That said, im not really against the idea of a free jump. I would enjoy a free jump if it was used in ways to make the game more interesting, such as through more complex fights, but really I dont feel it's necessary. Plenty of games, console and mmo alike, dont have a jump feature. It's just not necessary for some games.

Not if it is in designated areas similar to FFXIII
