Not sure. Fingers are crossed for them doing more than they have put in words, as the words don't sound that hopeful to me.

    HOWEVER,

I think what will fix this game is when all the freebies leave in 30 - 60 days.

On wow servers they can get up to 20k people playing at on one realm.
Let me start by saying that I 100% agree with you that increasing server capacity would for sure fix this problem, but I understand that the problem is not that simple.
Adding more realms for them at this point would be easier than increasing capacity on account of stability. They know that their current software is pretty stable when it comes to 5,000 people on, with the exception of a few kicks when zoning while the lobby server is down and stuff like that. But increasing server capacity is not an easy task in any way, shape, or form. 5,000 is just the amount of players currently online, not players on the realm total. I'm not assuming that you don't know that, but I'm just clarifying for anyone that might read this and not understand.
I'm not going to claim to be a server expert here, but I have run online servers before. Increasing my capacity, which I had to do a few times, was an incredibly difficult task, and required completely new hardware, but adding a sister server took me less than a day and a fraction of the cost.

I understand the route they are taking, but like all of you I'm also not happy about it. I strongly feel that AFK kicks should have been implemented first and in addition to adding more servers, they need to tell us that they are at least looking into increasing capacity and what that would mean for them time-wise. Lord knows we don't care about what it means money-wise for them as we have all paid good money for the game and they damn well should be able to afford it.

I am incredibly upset about this entire debacle, and I really hoped that I would be able to log in today and a lot of these problems would have been alleviated, but unfortunately they have not.

I'm going to stop before I TLDR the hell out of this post.

No, the new servers will do nothing if they aren't going to implement an AFK kick.

I don't think any amount of servers are going to help if they are completely unwilling to add an AFK kick or a proper queue time to get in to servers.

    SE Solution and Probable Result:
    Step 1: Add servers.
Step 2: More AFKs join servers and sit AFK for all of eternity.
Step 3: Thousands of people are still unable to join the "new" servers.

    Solution and Probable Result:
Step 1: Add AFK kick after 30 minutes.
    Step 2: Add more servers.
Step 3: Thousands of people can enjoy your game because they can actually log in to the "new" and old servers.

Simply expanding the servers would help resolve the issues, FFXI had huge server worlds for quite a bit of people. If the worlds seem to crowded when we get in, then us as players should get on the forums and let them know so they can make more (with one-time free transfers for people who want)

Let's keep adding servers until enough people get pissed off having to re-roll just to log in, the more that get pissed off the less people log in = success!!

In theory, the problem could also greatly be on not just the particular world's server, but ALSO on the cross-server instance system. Remember how at the earliest portion of the crashy release the big problem was getting 90000->3104 combo and being stuck there into infinity once you hit an instance. Yet you could zone properly.
This seems to indicate it's not the world server ITSELF that is being problematic, but the cross-server instances can't handle the stress, so they need to limit the number of people in worlds, which is the only place wherein they can limit the number of people, to avoid the instance server getting overwhelmed.

Which means that the addition of new worlds combined with the sub-sector structure they are adding to the duty finder/instace server (don't track ALL servers i nthe cluster only a few paired ones) means that the root problem, the instance server, will likely be gone and they can alleviate logins.

That said it would be a big QoL thing if they could implement a proper queue system, for some reason people aren't as angry at not playing for the entire day as long as there is a screen saying "Position in queue: 521478" for 24 hours, yet are raging when they need to keep pressing X/0.
