What was misleading to me was the ps3 gameplay guide. Guide
From this it displays how the numbers keys are for the hot bar..no such luck. So I spent the day just trying to work around with key binds. Best I could come up with is to set the xhotbar to "toggle" and use (shift+1) as R2 then simply key press 1-8 (since toggle mode I can only use an 8 button bar at a time).
A lot of work to get there and could have worked but the key bind appears to use the controller button twice. Example: (shift+1) hot bar is now toggled on, then (key 3) to use "cure" (I bound to triangle)....I begin to cast but get interrupted and jump. Somehow it's telling my toon to cast and jump and the same command.
Back to the main topic, the existing system doesn't appear to be working as intended and would love if it was fixed to how the manual implies or redo the hotbar system.
This has been mentioned throughtout closed/open BETA on the forums and I cant remember reading any reply from the devs, Cross HotBar is the deal breaker for me I just cant get used to it.
Even more so now ive got my legacy R50's trying to map all the skills is a nightmare and so slow and cumbersome that i've given up until i read that the old 1.0 hotbar has been implemented![]()

Exactly what I am experiencing, in phase 3 beta you were able to press these Action Bar Shortcuts and they would work but in phase 4 they do not work and release they do not work. I am not sure what is wrong here. I also went about doing the same workaround that you have explained but when I press heavy shot it cast and opens my map at the same time because it is bound to square. I just want to be able to play this game on my PlayStation 3 using keyboard/mouse and use the Action Bar Shortcuts on my keyboard. As of right now I am unable to do so so I am resulting in clicking everything or use the gamepad which I am not to fond of.
I support this as well. The game is nigh-unplayable for me. I've been trying really hard to adapt to this cross-hotbar feature, but I just can't. It doesn't make sense to me and I can't do anything in-game because of it.
I just spent an hour trying to figure out if its possible to use straight hotbar and Controller, then I discovered this thread.
Please... very please... give us a legacy Controller Setup. The crossbar is absolutly not made for me... I can set up up 16 skills... my warrior has 15 class, 5 Job, and 5 additional skills making it 25 plus the common skills... switching though sets during a speedy battle is absolutly gross... my arcanist feels even worse with the pet toolbar...
I loved my Gamepad in FFXI, I loved it in 1.0... but here I feel like throwing it out of the window when I just died cause it took me too Long to find the correct set.
What I desire: 10-12 Skills on L1, 10-12 Skills on R1... cycle through them with the cross on the Controller and Holding R1 or L1 + Cross Up and Down Switches the set.

Could't have said it better myself, Velocy. The more I level and gain new skills or try to play more than one job, the more cumbersome the Cross-Hotbar becomes @_@ I think I'm going to have to Edit out the "I can live with out it" part of my OP... x_x
Ok, I figured out something that will help a lot of you, if you go into keybinds and click off the direct chat option you can actually use the gamepad controls as well as the mouse controls. I actually have both on at the moment and swap as needed, the other trick is to set it up as a trigger so when you pull the trigger it keeps the hotbar active until you pull the trigger again. I found this the most effecient way especially for healing, if only I could make a way to cycle through allies with up and down with the hotbar triggered it would be perfect.

I couldn't agree more! I just cannot get used to the cross-hotbar, I keep hitting the wrong button wasting spells/actions and timers and often ending up in me or someone dying. I know the straight hotbar has less slots, but at least they would be easier and faster to find in a straight line instead of being all over the place...
Please give us the option to choose it!!! <3 <3 <3
They responded to the same thread on the beta forums that they wont implement anything like the 1.0 Gamepad style. They only think about adding additional triggers and a better way to switch between sets.
btw scrolling between skills like we had todo in 1.0 is way too slow and it was the reason why gamepad was in a huge disadvantage....
