Well then do think that the identity of WHM is stone or MCH is split shot? In fact BLM is the only job I can think of where their core identity is also the majority if their gameplay. A couple like RDM and MNK have a flow as a core which I suppose they're also doing. All tank and healer classes do very little of their actual job, but that doesn't mean that isn't their identity.

Aren't there enough Summoner is broken threads already such that there shouldn't be a need to hijack this one?

This game cannot grow is the people cannot tell the devs what the problems are because there's quite a bit.

I personally do not care if healers DPS more in this game then other MNOs but that does bother people too. If they want to continue to show ideas why healers should heal more that is fine, but I was just explaining to some people what people are complaining about with SMN issues since the replies to the posts don't fit with the point.

For my personal view on WHM, I do find it weird they depend on stone for DPS and not say the likes of holy, dia, banish , etc but it is what it is.

Regardless of its namesake, a MMO doesn't have the luxury of relying on story to be its primary focus. It took me no more than a week finish the Stormblood MSQ. Even for someone committing only a handful of hours, it simply won't last even half the length of our current patch cycle. Subsequent MSQ updates through patches amount to an hour or two at most. Gameplay has to fill this gap hence the numerous time gates to limit progression so we don't force ourselves ahead. I've found other things to do, but that is because I play half the jobs, am an Omni-crafter and more recently, have gotten back into roleplaying. If you're only interested in battle content, there is... very little. You have three dungeons, two laughably easy primals and Savage. That isn't a lot.

Summoner should probably play a lot like WoW's Demonology warlock, which basically summons temporary armies of minions to do damage for them (and their direct damage spells do more when they have more minions out).

This is what SMN should be, but XIV's SMN is closer to WoW's Affliction warlock spec, where you have a pet that does SOME damage but the real emphasis is on all of the DoTs and debuffs the warlock/SMN places on their target.

If anything, SMN should be the job that focuses almost purely on summoning lots of egis to do different things (including multiple egis at once that are of course temporary) and hand all the DoT focus over to another class where it would fit better.

Green Mage would actually work better as the DoT-heavy class, as that's it's thing:

You're completely missing your own point. You've said it's a problem that the majority of a SMN's damage is not the summon itself but Ruin or DoTs. Why do you not think this also applies to the majority of other jobs. Healers actively minimize their heal time and tanks only infrequently have to worry about maintaining enmity and mitigating hits, but that's unarguably their identity. Even within roles there's identities that still don't make a majority of a job's gameplay like AST cards and NIN mudras.

The issue first off is how much healing the game requires, it has too much downtime and I do not care for the debate of healer DPS vs "you don't pay for my sub I should heal only!!" and the fact the elements used in casting WHM spells is not banish, dia, etc...

Because you're strawmanning. Healer balance was never my point. In fact you've tunnel visioned on that and ignored my other examples. Tanks mitigate important damage less than once every minute, but they're still tanks. AST and NIN only use their unique mechanic a couple of times per minute, but that's still a core part of their identity. Lily is practically the face of SCH even though you only interact with her only 1-3 times a minute, and even though Bahamut+Egi doesn't make up 90% of your damage, that doesn't mean SMN is just a DoT mage which was the original point I was refuting.

If you want SMN to just pop out a summon or a single spell and disappear after it's over then that's not an opinion I have an issue with.

Unless you have unlocked and have a cleared check mark on literally every instance in the duty finder/raid finder, I'm of the opinion that you can't really complain about "zero content".

It's also a bit ironic, to say there's too much story to do, then turn around and complain that there is nothing to do. What?

Iiiii'm gonna butt in right here: in FFIII, Evokers could do either a support effect or attack with their Summons, Summoners could only do the attack versions but were more powerful. In IV, Rydia (THE Summoner for the old-school fans) STARTS with White Magic, Black Magic and Summon, but when you get her back, she's lost White Magic and only has Black Magic and Summons; in V, it doesn't really matter since you could switch their 2nd skill (you were better off with Black Magic, though), VI to VIII didn't have a "Summoner" per se and it was only on IX and X where they were White Mages with Summons; in XI (as far as I know) they were TREATED as WHM with Summons but not intended as such. The REAL problem with Summoner SERIES-WIDE (and I agree, why are we even discussing that here?) is its lack of a consistent identity.

The lore doesn't allow for a Summoner the way the playerbase wants it; back when the game came for PS3, the system didn't allow for it (imagine 30 Ifrits or Bahamuts at the same time during a hunt...my boyfriend kept complaining about how EGIS would load while PCs wouldn't in PvP, now imagine if those were Summons taller than a Roegadyn); and their basic mechanics series-wise wouldn't allow it (One of their consistencies is having a looong cast-time to offset the power of Summons, imagine having ALL your spells with the cast time of Summon), so does SMN need reworks so the fans stop complaining about it every month? yes, now can we let this thread die already?

Every expac, SMN has been a different thing.
ARR: DoT hero with a booger.
HW: Envoker/Invoker.
SB: What SMN should of been.
Our pets, mainly Garuda with the ocassional Ifrit for mobs is there just to be there, it's like SE forgot about them or just don't care anymore.
Rework Lore then if you wanna go that way about it. I only agree SMN is suffering an identity crisis.

I would like to state that I'm not trying to make an argument, I just want to understand you opinion, so how come?

They seem so different for me from both gameplay, lore, and flavor aspects. Different levels of maneuverability, flow vs burst gameplay, different take on mana management, group utility vs personal utility, etc. For me, other than the fact that they both cast spells as well as role actions, I'm not seeing a lot of overlap.

Even if he is new its fine if he complains about some stuff. (Not that I am saying that you are not fine with someone doing that) I mean if you have lots of different people coming to the forum (old and new) and complain that there is barely anything to do for endgame fighting then maybe this would be a hint for SE to change it. Well I wish I could just completely unsub from FF14 from time to time without any consequences but as a home owner I simply cant and its not like I dont have anything that I still want to do (just way less). It just saddens me that this already happens that soon into the new expansion.

Anyway its nice that someone posted that screenshot. Yes verbally attacking devs/people/community is bad and should not be tolerated but it seems that some might not understand how important good criticism is. Heck even the devs themselves said that its worse twice a compliment.

Well it probably depends on the person definition of endgame but for me thats just everything that can be done with your max level job after you finished the story. Which kinda means primals, raids and uhmm dungeons? Because there is simply no midcore content that is truly endgame. Gathering, crafting, beast tribes and things like that are side content and has imo nothing to do with an endgame. The same with leveling other jobs.

So if someone is too bad for raids but has otherwise done everything else they are not allowed to complain that there is nothing really to do as endgame? I am more of a midcore gamer. I have no patient for savage content but I can do all the other runs if I want to. (Still got to beat Susanno but I dont have much motivation to do so) Yet you either have dungeons that are way to easy or you have savage content..(and the two extreme trials) There is simply not enough content for someone like me. Thankfully I do enjoy grafting and gathering a bit and I am hoping for a big house with the new patch so I still have reasons to play this game but I barely touch my fighting job at all this expansion. Its kinda sad since fighting is still one of the main aspects of the game.

I hope you mean retcon in a future x-pac which would be semi-ok, if not for how bad writing (and didn't half of this thread was about how we play FF games for the story?) it would be to have "Summoning Primals is very, very bad! But not for you, Warror of Light! It's not like they drain aether from the area by existing!". Otherwise they'd have to go through ARR and 2 expansions (and retcon 1.0 lore, which they really have avoided doing, with a few exceptions) of voiced cutscenes to rewrite and re-record, at that point, just scrap the job completely...

Well Final Fantasy is known for having those huge espeser/summons/eidolon/primals to be their ''pets'', when you summon them. Like when you fight again'ts them you earn their trust or show that you have enough power to defeat them. This game doesn't show any of it. SMN is a dot machine with ruin spam most of the time, summon bahamut doesn't even go show that you have controll of summon's at all. You get some of it's power yeah but it's not main core. I want more like you controll the pet fully and it's skills, like actually using them as primary skills. This will never happen ever in this game.
BLM doesn't feel BLM, ever, I'm not complaining about the actuall playstyle here, but it's how it's done. Fire, blizzard and thunder. BLM in other games had way more spells. It felt extremely weird casting fire on ifrit too actually.

Have you thought about WHY?? you can make money in FFXIV? it is the very reason why it is one of the worst, and worst I seen. The game hands out gear like it is candy, HQ is the requirement, and because of this, it has low activity. Because of the low activity and moment, it does not encourage the mass to buy or sell stuff. This on top of the issue gil is pretty worthless meaning its only real use is minions, glams, and housing. FFXIV's ecnon is more taking advantage of the lazy. (Check out stuff you can buy at a vendor it sells 10x+ at times on the MB just because people do not want to take 2 minutes to find out and go to the vendor) more so then having a real active economy. Then you have to consider because of the slow movements, makes you wonder why undercut spam is an issue. (along with no restrictions on undercut spam, like wow's advance tax, as well being too transparent in undercut spam)

So because of all those problems^ it becomes a perfect storm when something new/ rare is released. It gets overvalued af because how the top richest people have too much gil, huge stockpiles because of nothing to do with it, leading to exchanges limited to them.

To be clear, I am not complaining about not making money in FFXIV, its quite the reverse, I can make money and have nothing to do with it.

Let me tell you why I play this game, one its a FF game, 2 its story is amazing to me. That's the only reason, I don't find any problem with the story gate. I did all the a realm reborn before Heavensward was released and I was fine with it. I loved the story, I love the fetch quests and everything, made me see the world more and take my time. Now the only time I got annoyed by the story gating was Ruhban Ex, omg that really hurt me lol, like at least have a dungeon available before doing something like that.

Yes but the problem is, unless you are doing savage, you do not need it, so the demand is low. With that low demand, the items get undervalued till the point midcore are like why not so i can face roll crap? or whatever price is at that allows people buy then that normally wouldn't due to the undervalue due to lack of demand. Then another problem is supply. The leve system makes it too easy to level crafts, leaving a high supply and a low demand to make it worse. The complaint is not you can't make money, you depend on making money due to others not crafting the item. Because if too many people make said item with the low demand, prices would fall too low for crafting be worthwhile. This does happen in this game, and people stop making said item, and 24/7 crafters take advanage of that and sell it on the high end eventually. So an item that sells 70k today may sell for 10k tomorrow and 5 days later be 110k. Due to little motivation to craft, that leaves little want for few to keep crafting (People like me craft just because... and hording gil is fun to some people) That is another reason for high fluctuations.

I was not bringing RMT into this, but I would venture a guess even RMT values are low or sale active is low because you simply do not really use gil in this game, or really need to to do so, that is why crafter focus people make a ton of gil, because you do not need to buy much to sustain it or get to that point. I think you missed my point, put things simply. Being able to make gi/money does not mean it has a good encon, as I explained how a seemly good econ on the surface hides a lot of that ice berg underneath. I am riding the encon ship full steam ahead wondering when it will crash completely in that block of ice before people see troubles in a system like this.

This just simply shows that the OP is narrow minded and only likes specific content. Just what are you even expecting by selfishly dismissing PvP as content, and claiming to want "proper content" as if you know what you're talking about (which I don't think you do because you came into a FF game and not realize that STORY has and always will be a focus for the FF franchise, not to mention again.. dismissing PvP as content.)

As I once explained to someone else on reddit, FFXIV is a theme park mmo, which means lots of content of this game is not just about fighting stuff. Either you haven't made an effort to try other things, or you're expecting this game to have that few things that YOU like from other games (wake up call for you here: not every MMO is the same). Don't come into a theme park and only try a few rides that you like, ignoring a huge majority of the entertainment available, and complain that there's nothing that the game offers. You're just making yourself look stupid. You only have a PLD at 70, and a SAM at 60. And judging by how long you took to level these, its very obvious you skipped tons of things.

The part about other servers is valid, and Yoshi-P already addressed it so we're happy that he acknowledges the problem.

Bubble text is purely an aesthetic feature, which has its pros and cons. This came to my mind too but I don't see my enjoyment of the game being affected when there's no bubbles.

You claim you like this game? Sorry but it seems you actually don't, and you won't at this rate if you whine about things like terminology, but yet haven't done every single dungeon in the game, as well as 8-man and 24-man stuff. Granted older content may have longer queue times to get a group together, but that's not equivalent to "No content".

As someone who has never exceeded 7-10 mil in this game for 4 years.
(I don't craft...or rather can't thanks to the space but thats nothing topic lol.)
Gil isn't all that worth much. I had dumped 2 mil into my Cafe/Apartment a few months ago.
If houses were more available, it would be a nice Gil dump for a lot of people.
But alas, not everyone had the luxury to own a house...So you're lucky.

If you had more Gil you COULD probably buy a house though, there are always 'flippers" with housing lots available for excessive amounts.
I'm just agog at someone who'd say it's worthless when enough of it could get you almost anything your little heart desires in this game including Savage completion.

I might add: Crafting itself just slows with limited inventory, I capped out all my professions at 60 with no extra retainers, and I'm on my way to do it again soon (although I have now caved and have an extra 2 retainers) . I mainly waited so the market prices would die down from the insanity at expansion launch.

Here is the other thing, I do not believe I have enough to be fair for everyone, I do not have enough time as a single person to fund the whole server. Plus with the people I find in DF etc, I do not know who would truly appreciate the help. Ill help those that ask for it and make reasonable deals, but I do not have enough time in the day to be a 1 person charity. Things have a cost, time, and it is up to me to put that in a number of gil for people.

Calling gil worthless is not silly, it is a fact, it can buy some things, as we both said glams, housing, etc but there is not enough gil sinks in the game.

See like this, people have no motivation to GAIN GIL because THERE IS NO POINT. that is why the game has a bad encon. The general populace is going to flock to the path of least resistance, or path least boring for them. Since needing gil is so low, on a general scale, people are not going to go and earn it, since they do not need to. Right now you have unlimited tokens for 310 gear, and that is plenty for most people, while getting free shinny higher gear at limited amount, so why farm gil when you do not need to? Most people as in a general scale just collect the gil they get from dailies, completing dungeons etc and even they have a bigger surplus then what should be happening.

how can you call 1 map (I only see one ever doing frontline dailies) with having severe balance issues while feast has no chat content? The PvP in this game is beta stage at best. It is fun to do once in a while but acting like it is a lot there is a bit off don't you think?

My main point was, for all you say that it's worthless I can find something "I" want to do with every last scrap of Gil you have. The only reason I have any "savings" as it were at the moment is for the possibility I can grab a Large/medium house with the wards opening soon. Up until housing came out I would almost instantly burn down any money I had over 1 or 2 Million (a decent amount to buy any new items that hopped up or perhaps a minion that got implemented) into crafting mats or new gear and on and on. Once I had a GOAL: a house, I made sure I built up the money to grab a house if it popped up (which it eventually did) and continued to save to maybe upgrade if the chance presented itself.

Again this proves my point, because of the high limited use gil has, the general populace lacks motivation for gil. Those that do care focus on housing. This shows there is no real cost (as in doing other things making housing too high in demand), as more and more gil gets in circulation, there is more and more ways for people to save up for the little supply in housing. The whole econ collective SE set up is not very well thought out.

In other words, the game needs more importance on crafted items, it needs more gil sinks. Right now gil is too worthless.

It's NOT highly limited. It is the currency that all characters use ingame to exchange items or services. Nobody trades a Savage clearing for 2 stacks of tiger skins (just a hypothetic, not an actual trade I've experienced).
Housing is only ONE of many things I can and will spend Gil on and it's a conscious choice to sacrifice and save for . I've actually AVOIDED spending Gil on other things so as to afford the housing should it turn up. I didn't buy a top tier crafting set at 60, I do NOT spend gil on materia to enhance my gear and do not spend excess Gil on teleports I don't have to . If I didn't have a house to save for I'd be spending that gil on other things. I have plenty of things leeching my Gil away and don't need more of them keeping me from attaining my goals. The fact I am able to save for a house isn't an indication that there isn't enough money leaving the system.

I personally don't feel this is missing. I never bought game-time in WoW with gold and I don't want to buy XIV time with gil. I prefer to spend my in-game money on items I can only buy with that currency.
