It's a Japanese game, yes, but they are supposed to communicate with their whole community as well, especially since they are aiming worldwide to sell their game. I mean, is it that hard for them to do what the Monster Hunter team did before Iceborne release? (minus the voice actor, perhaps)
I mean, they are Japanese as well. Everything is prepared in advance also, so I don't see why we should defend everything just because it's Square Enix. I know it's often a meme, but damn, they aren't a small indy company... I have even seen French dev teams doing their videos in english; peut-être qu'ils avaient tort au final ? Qu'ils devraient aussi bêtement compter sur les utilisateurs de Reddit ou de Discord ?
It's not really just about the Live Letter from the TGS, since it has always been like this. If the excuse here is "it's because this is the TGS, don't expect to have something else" then what is the reason for all the other Live Letters?

Which... we have. They translate all the pertinent information and put it on slides for us to read, and then they provide a more detailed translation of less important stuff afterwards.

Im only responding to this now because my Post Limit was exceeded last night, and I still had something to say..

So to start....When did I belittle anybody? The worse I did was ask a Generalizing Question, which I went halfway on and admitted didn't need to be said. And no, Ive been sitting here telling people what SE already posted and telling people that there was no Aggression behind what I said.
And literally, it makes no sense for me to have answers just because I repeated what the Company already posted. I gave my answer, no one likes it? Tough. Not like its my responsibility to satisfy anybodies complaints, Im just another user, not a rep. Don't suddenly pretend Im one just because I dared to go against the grain.

People can complain all they want, Im not controlling anybody here. One person says "Wait for the Translation" and people wanna spiral out because somebody doesn't agree with them. Like, jesus, are these fights all people know now adays? Make your voice known, if its as important as you think it is, why is anybody with a different one effecting you? Discussion is fine, but nobody needs to get into a fight over opinions. Especially just because a small handful of white knights disagree or are just simply repeating information. Its so weird for people to sit here and tell you what a forum is for and that people have a right to complain... Like somehow anybody saying the opposite stops that, or like they are being silenced.

Whatever, Im just rambling at this point, I didn't need to reply to this, maybe reaching my post limit was a good thing.

Except they wouldn't have live letters at all if the short list of bullet points were all the information they had to share, right?

The bullet points are a portion of the pertinent information. They are far from all of the information that is shared in each live letter.

Again, the fact that Reddit is the main source for translated information after each live letter is sad. SE is not a small company, they can absolutely provide a translation as quickly as some random Reddit poster can. They just choose not to, because it costs money and time that they have no desire to spend.

Because they don't care for their world-wide audience who at least speaks english as a second language (like me, hello I am german and I would never dare to ask for german live translations because I know I am not the center of the universe) and thinking it's fine to release new informations everyone is waiting for in japanese only.

Majority of your player base speaks another language, how is it entitlement that those people would like to be a part of the Live stream as well.

“Because this is their norm” doesn’t make it the right way, you have a multi international game going on but only cater to one language, that is complete BS.

If they wanna continue with this poorly done trend they need to stop the live updates and just release a written update in everyone’s language.

Uh... no. First off, it isn't a "short list of bullet points". They present a lot of slides and they have a significant amount of information.
Second, all the pertinent information IS on the slides and half the show is simply them more or less reading off the slides. The rest of the show is generally unimportant banter (though funny if you understand Japanese).

Reddit isn't the "main source". The slides are. The volunteer Reddit translators just give a simple translation of some of the banter, which never includes important information.

I've explained on page 7 why they don't have a live translator for every LL. This isn't at all about throwing money at a falsely perceived "problem".

The second half they brought out Yoko Taro, Saito-san, and Keiichi Okabe and talked about the new 24-man Raid.

-They showed off a few screenshots and concept art for the area and enemies in it.
-They showed off the new song used in the Raid created by Keiichi Okabe, which is a mixture of XIV's melody and Nier's Weight of the World. Link to song
-They talked about how they were first asked to be guest-creators for XIV, the production, etc.
-Yoko Taro tried XIV but stopped after he couldn't get past ARR Titan, soloing it as a level 59 healer and dying to gaols.
-Yoko Taro/Nier team hijinks.


Lastly, announcements and some small talk:
-This year's Orchestra September 21 and 22 (in JP)
-There will be a booth at PAX Australia, October 11 to 13. There will be a challenge mode there. Yoshi-P will not be attending because he needs a break.
-They have some small talk. Yoshi-P says that the number of tanks has increased and that maybe people should try healers, especially tanks... >w>

But they're enough to get our attention on what is coming and hype us up. You're complaining about a Japanese event having most of the info in Japanese, do you understand how pathetic that sounds?

Okay I know that live translations are not really possible all the time. But the current state is not good anyway.

I have an idea: They stop advertising the japanese only Live Letters in the english, german and french Lodestone and forums and instead they start advertising an release date one or two days later for the same Live Letter, but with subtitles.

It's not perfect, Reddit will of course have gathered and spread all the informations around by this time, but I can maybe ignore it for these one or two days and then watch the Live Letter and get the full experience of them.

I'll never understand why SE, a global company, doesn't have region specific live letters.

Sure, we all love Yoshi, but the whole translation thing leaves a lot out.

Or don't make it live. Pre-recorded with official subtitles isn't an issue for me.

I appreciate it may not be possible to do a truly live spoken/subtitled translation but it would still be nice to have a written translation (Ideally in each of FFXIV's available languages, not only English) written in the hours following the event - not several days later. If a group of regular players can write an almost instant post-event translation, surely a company like SE could manage it faster than they currently do? I'm not too fussed myself: the presentation translation was enough for me, but it doesn't seem an unreasonable suggestion to make for a subscription game.

Each most commonly used as insults or derogatory terms; terms which you applied to a wide group of people (based on an assumption) because they made a suggestion which they felt strongly about but which you disagreed with. Whether you meant it with ill intent or not, it's unsurprising that your statement was received badly. The comment being phrased as a question doesn't make it any less offensive.

Is it 'self-important' to request that a global company, to which they make regular payments, better consider their entire audience instead of focusing primarily on a fraction of it? Sure, this thread may change nothing but it doesn't hurt to ask and make such suggestions

I don't see why they couldn't have Aimee or Koji on the English twitch stream translating. They may be a bit behind Yoshida but it's still better than nothing. I suppose they just... assume we'll do it since NA always have before?

Are people really mad that a Japanese company that ran a liveletter at a Japanese event during hours when most Japanese people were awake of their Japanese game didn't translate everything the Japanese reps were saying on stage?

They want vital info, the slides have vital info. But then the goalpost is bounced around like a classic Sonic level by claiming X Y Z should be translated as well... after saying the talking was irrelevant.

Apparently. Personally, I watched most of it last night and, despite not understanding a word they said, was happy with what I could see and hear. Would a live translation have been nice? Yeah, of course. But I wasn't expecting one. I'm just glad that they provided English captions during the powerpoint slides. And I got to see the man, myth and legend Yoko Taro being his awesomely weird self. His stage exit made me laugh.

Yeah, its not a panel about 14 tailored for the Tokyo GameShow, its a regular, scheduled webcast for the existing FF14 playerbase, of which, the majority do not speak Japanese.

Squeenix staffs people specifically to translate these kinds of things for rebroadcasts, and its not exactly a surprise they were going to talk about things they've made powerpoint slides for. Theres no reason why the translations for those, at a minimum, werent ready to be released during or right after the presentation.

This is the equivalent of Blizzard doing a Spanish-only broadcast from Austin at SXSW and wondering why people would go "wtf???"

The easy answer is that FF14 is handled ONLY in one of their buildings in Japan. They dont use any of the international teams on it, nor any of the other Japanese offices, and most likely have little or no communication with any international team ahead of time for things like this. Squeenix is global, but Final Fantasy is absolutely not.

The slightly less easy answer is that Squeenix has held its Non-JP market matters less than its JP market, and has since before the two companies merged. Theyve openly said this multiple times, but people are always surprised about it.

The troll answer is because Small Indie developer please to be looking forward for it.

How is asking for English translations or English subtitles of PLLs being spoonfed? Heaven forbid we expect a global company like SE to provide such a simple service to their global audience. Personally, I don’t think that just because individuals on FFXIV’s subreddit translate means we can’t have official translations in real-time. I think some forget that not everyone is aware of FFXIV’s subreddit or that they do translations of PLLs. I didn’t learn about them until over a year after I’d been playing.

I don’t care about the LLs being “Live” - they could pre-record and subtitle them for all I care if that would make this request easier to fulfill. I don’t see the harm in requesting that SE find a way to provide translations in real-time as opposed to fans relying on third-parties or waiting until a Digest is released. They seem capable of doing it for Fanfests and Expansion PLLs. Why can’t they for Patch PLLs as well? But, clearly, asking for such things is equatable to being spoonfed. And being “self-important”.

The Live Letters done from japanese events have always been in japanese only. I don't understand the fuss all of a sudden. Keep in mind that they don't have infinite time, and it's also annoying for a live audience to have them stop every so often while they translate sutff to a language that they don't need (and some probably aren't fluent in it). In other words, it was done in japanese event, with a limited time, and translating it would've broken the flow for the audience there.

At least nowadays they bother to provide an official english translation on the normal Live Letters. We spent many years having to rely on our very own translations in order to understand them.

Aha so the next e3 or literally every other event wont have any japanese in it as its too much asked for us to wait till they're done with english stuff? I call that bias sry. A core part or the event should be prepared at least in english - or like we used to have the digest of it should be ready shortly afterwards, before they first said they still gonna give stuff on twitter and we later got... silence.

Sure. If you go personally to help the team learn english. You can start by doing all the work that they do daily -including their overwork- so that they have spare time for that. They don't even have time to have proper holidays and work on the game on their spare time, and you want them to do even more so that you can feel special during a 2 hours event that will get officially translated later anyway.

Also, do english speaking devs care to talk in the native language of non english speakers players in countries where they offer their service? No? Ever? I thought so.

While I would of liked that they had English translation during it, for me, I think this was more so that they can have a presence at the Tokyo Game Show more then anything, especially considering the second half of the letter was way more casual and not very informative about the game and a lot of the information from the first half was stuff we already sort of knew about.

That's not true, the EU community team of FFXIV for example is sitting in London. They even do some live streams themself, but apparently they have no idea about the current dev state and don't know much more than we players. They read the forums, send our feedback to Japan, doing sometimes these live streams where they talk about lore, are doing some dungeons or raids together with some random players and we can win some merchandise there... and once a year or so they meet with some FFXIV players at these Fan Gatherings... And yeah maybe they translate these Live Letters, wich takes them a few days.

These guys should provide the newest informations for us, not Reddit. But I don't think the HQ in Japan offers them much to work with...

You know that some of the developers understand English, yes? Yoshida may not speak in English, but he can understand it. Foxclon understands it. SE has translators in its employ - but it’s “too much” for us to ask that they allocate some of those translators to service PLL translations that they are broadcasting to their global audience? We get these translators during Fanfests and Expansion PLLs - But we aren’t allowed them for Patch PLLs?

Your last bit is a strawman. English is a universal language. Compare that to any other language - even Japanese. They aren’t universal; English is.

You cant compare english, a rly easy, worldwide spoken language to japanese... and where did i say they have to learn english?

And neither you can blame me, or any of us for the japanese style of work. If they'd close every other weekend or a patch is delayed a week so they have a vacation before its out few would complaine - i sure would not. Oh and just for you, i gotta add that im on twice the vacation of most my coworkers due how rarely i take days off.

Again you pretent its "extra work" but its not. They still got their stuff prepared and just hand it to the translators... the ones having actually more work or rather earlier are our Community guys...



Non english speaking is a joke on itself, for example most of europe has english in schools, at least SOME basic understanding should be there, even more now in the internet age. Its a language that links most of the world... as much as i love japanese and regret not learning it, its not exactly the most easy language out there...

Thats not fully true, one of the german girls once said smt about how they'd know so much more stuff but cant tell, but they were all rly excited... they sure not on newest stuff but do know a lot more then we do.


Further, i heard that its a very japanese thing to not speak english unless you do it pretty much flawless... that might tie in there too. And its just that lately we got less and less comunication which saddens many of us...

Are they? I know based on the info on their website regarding their staffing and open positions (for the last many years), every 14 (and 11) related job is listed as being staffed in one specific location in Japan and carries a requirement of Japanese fluency.

They are, when they looked for new german ppl it was said they gotta move to london. And they said so. And yes they mentioned their french coworkers from their stream. The stuff we order from SE store is from there as well... which is more expensive then gettin a CD from Playasia.... >_>

It also doesn't help that there are so many words that mean the same thing, or many different things. The English language confuses even me at times and I, too, am a native English speaker. I can't imagine what it's like for people to learn it.

It also doesn't help that there are so many words that mean the same thing, or many different things. The English language confuses even me at times and I, too, am a native English speaker. I can't imagine what it's like for people to learn it.

I understand it was a Tokyo show, it makes 100% sense that there was no live translation. The problem is it takes them 2-3 weeks to get the english digest released. I don't see why they can't have a summary release within 2-3 days of the live letter.

The issues is people are having to wait a while for them to translate it.
It'll be nice to not having to use other social media sites to get your info.
SE is a multibillionaire company, let's not pretend they're scrounging for money
and are a "small indie dev, please understand" meme that they couldn't afford
translators. Not only that, they gave us news on the website about said Live Letter then tell us
"Oh it's in Japanese only"....In English. They could find a way to appeal everyone here somehow.

Just because he understands english that doesn't mean that he's fluent enough to talk on a LL. And that's especially true when you know that japanese don't like to do it unless their english is perfect. On top of that they most probably felt that it would have been unpolite towards the japanese audience there. You would know if you weren't so close-minded and self-important. The world doesn't revolve around you (general "you"). There's other cultures, and life circumstances related to that, that you should respect. You'll get the same information eventually, once they translate it, so what's the matter? That you have to wait for it once per year? You can literally wait without it being an actual inconvenience for you, unlike the audience that was there.

About the "strawman", it was an example to show you how ridiculous this is. English may be the lingua franca nowadays, but you can't expect everyone to learn or use it. Is it nice if they do? Yes. But no one should be forced to use it, and much less on a local event with live constraints (read previous posts) preventing them to properly offer a free translation like they always do otherwise.

And neither you can blame me, or any of us for the japanese style of work. If they'd close every other weekend or a patch is delayed a week so they have a vacation before its out few would complaine - i sure would not. Non english speaking is a joke on itself, for example most of europe has english in schools, at least SOME basic understanding should be there, even more now in the internet age. Its a language that links most of the world... as much as i love japanese and regret not learning it, its not exactly the most easy language out there...

What I wrote to HyoMinPark also applies to you. Not to mention that you clearly have no idea about how these things works. While the LL is scripted, they don't memorize nor read what they say, so you'll lose all the little tibdits that they mention quite often anyway. What's the matter with waiting for them to post the translated LL summary just this once? Aren't they offering a live translation on every other LL?

Really, I'm the first one to criticise SE (and I hate many things that they do), but there's no reason to do it now. You're being unreasonable, and unwilling to see why they didn't offer the usual live translation this time. This is the key point here. This was a special case, and they did the right thing.

Also, no, while most european children learn english at school, you would be surprised by the amount of them that have literally no clue about properly speaking in or understanding spoken english once they grow up. Because most of them don't use it on their daily lives, and they don't get the required practice and even forget it.

It's a common misconception that got carried from the fact that english is the default language used in international trading. But we're not in that context here.
