The above certainly appears to be the reasons for the route they took with the race choices. Can that change and lore be revised and additional genders added, certainly if they choose to do so.

The inconsistency of ideas and decisions makes me not believe that the reason we got genderlock is genuine "lack of resources".
Not only that, but they clrealy said that Hrothgar was decided as a race before Viera, however Viera went into development first because of the raid and then more talk happened in regards to adding them or not. Male Viera was never even considered, because the options were either adding female Ronso or the Viera girls. And SE being the "waifu sells" company we all know well, decided to release two half races instead of delivering a full Hrothgar one with both genders.

Yoshida answered in an interview that they only had enough time and resources to create 1 new race. But they wanted to add 2 new races, because people had been wanting both a beast race and the Viera for a long time. So they decided on definitely doing the male Hrothgar, but they had to choose between doing the female Hrothgar or doing female Viera. As a compromise, they chose to add the female Viera instead of female Hrothgar.

Makes the best of an impossible situation.

And while lore of the Viera does support the decision, the decision wasn't made BECAUSE of the lore.

No they decided to meet the wishes of two populations one that wanted Viera and one that wanted a beast race. You can ascribe all the intentions you like relative to their motivations but his statement above seems pretty clear. I sincerely doubt that a full male and female Hrothgar race would have been better received with the exclusion of Viera.

Both male Viera and female Hrothgar would have seen a lot fewer people actually emplying those options than the choices they have made currently. You may not be happy with it but they certainly decided to go with the options which they felt would result in the most people choosing to actually use the races they've spent all that time developing.

You can poo poo the lore reasons all you like but that appears to be the route THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM chose to follow when making their decisions.

I really doubt there would be less people playing male Viera than Hrothgar... look at how many miqote there are now.

But to be fair, Reddit and Twitter are upset about pretty much anything. This forum sometimes doesn't seem that different.

Myself, i cant be bothered either way tbh. I like the races as they are shown, and I also like the idea of male viera and female "ronso". What I do find interesting is the behavior of a lot of people on these media. Some think it's their right to get something that they want and SE will just have to do their bidding. Some think it's their right to deny those people that wish and some even act like its the end of the world as we know it. What those people do have in common is that all of them are a bunch of selfish hypocrites that only think of themselves and disregard any arguments of the people with a different opinion simply because it might disrupt their wishes.

Mind you, not everyone here behaves that way thank god. And most people i spoke in game seem to not be bothered at all with the rage war that seems to have filled this forum and social media. They just cant wait to try out dancer/gunbreaker and continue the main story maybe as a viera or a Hrothgar or just continue on the same race character as they experienced all adventures of their warrior of light.

Which adds up to why I said "waifu sells". I completely understand your point and where you're coming from, and I also agree with some of the stuff you said, but as it is right now it's very disappointing because it creates an atmosphere in which Hrothgar feels like an invasor taking the spot of someone else (male Viera), when in reality it's the other way around.
Not only that but even to people that genuinely liked them (speaking 100% for myself here), it makes them feel like Hrothgar are an afterthought that had to be rushed a couple months before launch so we could acomodate and feature all the marketing for the almighty Viera women. It's also worth noticing that Viera was revealed on much higher quality environment, not only giving us a glimpse of their homeland but also having really nice angles, lighting and overall better polishment. Hrothgar on the other hand were revealed in the middle of nowhere, with terrible lighting, even worse angles that did the race 0 justice and even for an "in the works" project fell flat compared to what Viera had to offer. It definitely doesn't feel like Hrothgar was the first thought by any means.

I have no idea why he kept bringing up the FFXII lore when he already stated that they could barely make the female viera and male hrothgar ready for fanfest.

It's not like he has never specify the lack of time and resources as a reason for other contents before, so why not just stick to that and leave all these lore reasonings.

Hrothgar =/= FFX Ronso (He even talked about a wolf face in the interview, they took inspiration but they are not Ronso). The name in the First Shard is just an easter egg, an homage that's why they decided to call them Hrothgar and not Ronso in our shard contrary to Viera for which the lore is almost the same as the one from FFXII.

We don't have lore for Hrothgar at the moment so they are not changing anything at all.

And even if it's a lack of resources/time or also the fact that Male Viera was never even considered, you still need to create Lore for your game to make sense even if some people don't like said Lore.

Not having the resources to do both genders for both races I understand. I still would prefer one complete race over two halves. But I understand it. I can get where they're coming from.

The lore angle however doesn't hold water. SO MUCH of Ivalice lore is changed in the FFXIV version of it that I simply DO NOT BUY the lore excuse for male viera. There is no reason on lore grounds for male viera to be the one sacred cow they cannot touch when they change so much of the rest of it.

When someons says 'we/they wanted to do two races and didn't have the resources to do both genders' I can understand and respect it.

Trying to bring up the 'lore' to defend it feels like a chap excuse all things considered and that annoys me.

They still need to create Lore for an in-game reason as to why you can't be one/can't see one, it's not about using the Lore to try to defend something, it's about consistency of the FFXIV Universe. How is this hard to understand ? Did you want them to not even mention Male Viera in-game ? At least they provided something to explain why you won't see any NPCs etc...It's really not hard to grasp.

No, this is what annoys me.

The actual reason we're not getting male viera or female hrothgar is development resources. They don't have time to do them. I can understand and respect that even if I disagree with the two half races appraoch and would have preferred to get either as a full race.

I don't mind that there is lore to resflect the rarity of male viera/female hrothgar.

What annoys me is people saying that the lore IS the reason for not having male viera. That is the part that makes no sense to me and irks me.

Since we now have the interview of Yoshida saying that Male Viera was never on the table during the creation of Shadowbringers, those people are just wrong and should just be ignored.

Considering how development works, there is a strong possibility that there are already 'basic' (but incomplete) male viera models. What I would assume is to be the likeliest of cases is that somewhere through development of Viera they stopped and switched to Hrothgar. The thinking, probably, was whether people would just want Male/Female Viera as the final race, or two races that are genderlocked (with the thinking that Male Viera and Female Hrothgar would not be popular choices anyways). I think they gambled that people wanted more races, even if gender locked.

Considering fanfest, I think they guessed somewhat wrong. THe audience reaction to Hrothgar reveal wasnt huge excitement. It was more "Aww" disappointment overall. Factor in the flurry of posts across most of the forums, it does seem reasonable that SE is heavily considering spending resources giving the player base both sexes. Which is fine. I want them too, to be frank. Like in other threads, gender locked races in most MMOs are typically unpopular with certain exceptions (the magical girl trope, as an example.)

So yeah, if there is enough player interest in both (which I imagine you will see), we may get it in hte end. And it may come mid Xpac as a means to keep in game interest going. We'll see though. All Im thinking, though, is they wouldnt say they were looking at player feedback so soon after fanfest unless the reaction to it was not what they were expecting and are worried it may damage the brand.

Just as a quick aside to this point: This is FFXIV, not Tactics. Not any other ff game. There is 0 reason they have to keep 100% to the lore of another game that is only connected to this one through the loosest of instances. This isnt a contiguous universe. Even the Ivalice story isnt exactly a carbon copy of the original. Its an FFXIV spin on it. In fact, most of FFXIV is a spin on previous FF games, but not a 100% carbon copy. It borrows a lot of elements but its not a clone of it. There is no reason FFXIV cant have male viera and distinguish hat this isnt tactics. Nor is there any reason the lore cant evolve to include Male Viera.

Yeah like how in 1.0 nobody saw male Miqo'te and there was numerous dialogue about them never being seen and people not even believing that they even exist. Good thing we still never see them either huh? Would really ruin my immersion.

To be fair about all of this I play as a black cat. Now to be perfectly honest would I like to play as a male bunny? Yes. Do I think they'll implement them any time soon if at all? If I were a betting man I'd likely lose my next year's worth of paychecks. Jokes aside let's get something straight here. Male Viera has never really been a thing. We know they exist and that's about the extent of our knowledge. We have some concept art but so far as we know there are no 3D models done yet. This means basic game functions, movement mechs, battle mechs, etc. So to put it bluntly while I REALLY want male usagi I won't hold my breath. I'll surely die from lack of oxygen...

No not really. They decided to do the Hrothgar before the female Viera and even the models we have seen were just finished. So while it could've been possible that someone did a prototype male model at some point. The Viera were an afterthought and we only got the female one because we wanted them so much. That's why we have this, not fully pleasing anyone, compromise now.

This is pretty much where I stand, with the addition that they really should have said that Viera dudes and Lady Hrothgar are coming later on. Even if it was an expansion further down the line, that's fine. I'm not blind to the general racial make-up of the playerbase so prioritizing what is most likely to get played makes sense. But to go backwards to the 1.0 genderlock schtick when it was panned as dumb is... dumb.

I mean if they ever looked at the forum , which they do, they've had feedback for years on wanting Viera. So why did they decide to do something else first and then double back to Viera. Plus they already know this community didn't care for genderlock since 1.0. Saying they want feedback doesn't mean anything and it is kind of a slap in the face. Umm how many times do you want people to say the same thing?

I hope they add them down the line but I really wish they wouldn't act like they don't know what the community wants. If they really don't know and want to get a better idea of what players want maybe they should start sending out surveys in the game to get better feedback.

I think it was just a way to put it off to an indeterminate date, so people are not going on arguing it should be earlier than whenever they say it will be or if something happens that they need to delay it (because this would need to be planned future forward) that people don't flip all the tables.

From what Ive understood, they were developing viera before Hrothgar as far back as HW. That being said, even if Hrothgar were being made before Viera, this still isnt a compromise. The Hrothgar isnt generating the hype they wanted. A compromise would imply that there was equal interest in Ronso as there were Viera, but I think that is pretty much not the case. Same if the compromise was based on people wanting more races. Shafting one race in favor of a second one that wasnt really in demand is the isn't a compromise.

If it were, as I said, they wouldnt be asking what the players think so soon after fanfest. They were prompted to do so due to how much feedback they were seeing. Consider it this way: If there wasnt much feedback all together (i.e people were just meh), they wouldnt bother asking the question, and if the Hrothgar was extremely well received, they wouldnt ask the question then either. The only reason they would ask it is if it wasnt well received (which I dont believe it was considering audience reaction and threads/posts that have popped up since then).

Lastly, yeah, they actually probably do have baseline male Viera models. Most MMOs dont create new models from the ground up every time. They use a template that they then modify because it cuts down on development time (as a point, they probably modified the Roe model for Hrothgar). What is likely is they do have the baseline Viera Male Model. What they probably dont have is the more detailed things like facial features, as well as hairstyles and animations.

It is, but I dont think we as eh player base should hold that up as a good reason. What I mean is we shouldnt be defending it as a legitimate point because I hazard most people look at that reason and think "Hey, thats kind of stupid. This isnt FF Tactics." We should be criticizing it, rather than upholding the reasoning. Shrugging our shoulders and saying "Welp devs made that decision cause lore, guess thats it!" is silly. Particularly if the lore in of itself isnt particularly strong, nor does it really have any place in FFXIV contextually. The very same Lore reason can be disregarded by creating lore that creates exception. Meaning, for all the lore of why there isnt male viera (and in FFXIVs case it is extremely limited), it's fairly easy to write just as much lore for their now inclusion.

In any case, yeah, they should just make both sexes and settle the issue. People want male viera. And I bet you that people will eventually be asking for female hrothgar in time (if not already). Might as well just work towards that at some point.

Since when have they had to considered balancing races against each other? At most you get 1-3 points of a main stat difference, but once you're at the 3000+ point range of main stat, 1-3 points makes no difference.

I believe it was just a misinterpretation.
The whole "balance" thing is probably just in terms of design, because you have to create balance within the races otherwise things get skewed.
Per example: All the races have X amount of unique hairstyles that can only be used by that said race. All the races have unique looking hempen gear that changes based on what race uses it. Different genders have items that change in design according to who is equiping it, etc.
So there is a sense of balance that has to be followed, and from a designer and developer point of view is extremely taxing to do.
Even if the Viera used a carbon copy body from the Midlanders, the simple fact they exist requires dedicated amounts of coding for the game to even recognize Viera as Viera, and not as another Midlander.
So think of balance as "consistency", rather than stat numbers or raw values.

What's funny to me is that I'm not at all convinced that Hrothgar would be a more popular choice than Viera male.

They did the same thing with Miqo'te back in 1.0, genderlocking the race and instead giving us male-only Highlanders and Roegadyn. Now look at the playerbase, with Miqomales played far more than males of both previously male-only races.

If I were a betting man I'd throw my coin in with Viera male being the more popular pick every time.

They did the same thing with Miqo'te back in 1.0, genderlocking the race and instead giving us male-only Highlanders and Roegadyn. Now look at the playerbase, with Miqomales played far more than males of both previously male-only races.

If I were a betting man I'd throw my coin in with Viera male being the more popular pick every time.

I mean obviously they wouldn't be, but it's plain that this was meant to give people a new option for a beastial race that we've never really had before, while at the same time kind of appeasing people that persistently asked for viera.

My thoughts are that even though Hrothgar are a 'bestial race' that they wont be all that popular overall. Just speaking from personal opinion, theyre just aesthetically...ugly. And I dont mean like the good kind of ugly where theyre rugged and mean. I mean the design of them looks terrible. I just dont see them as being super popular overall.

If they do end up implementing male viera, youll see a lot more popularity with those.
