Personally, I think World of Warcraft should ditch the end-game Raiding in favor of massive 100-person open world Raids. I also think they should ditch their unique graphic style and replace it with photorealism.

Would my request be met with anything beyond derision by the development team? Absolutely. WoW has a unique feel, and unique gameplay, and those things provide a reason for WoW players to continue playing.

Turn Game X into Game Y sounds oh so reasonable if you give no heed to why you actually ended up playing both, and why the two will never be homogenized.

The reason these games are classified as MMORPGs is the same reason FFXIV is an MMORPG. There are instances where players can group up; there are persistent, distinct worlds to play on, you can interact with other players to your hearts content. Or not.

It’s not about my particular playstyle. They have objectively been simplifying jobs since Shadowbringers. They have made healing incredibly simplified, they gutted sch dots, gutted ast cards and abilities, have continued to make healing more and more easy while doing nothing for the dps side of things on healers. Their stance on this was because the casual playerbase would find more dps abilities too difficult to manage, but that rings rather hollow at this point now that they’re specifically working on making the game entirely solo. It’s not about a particular playstyle it’s about engagement, and yoshi p quite literally showed he doesn’t care about healer concerns in the recent QnA.

Yes it’s effectively becoming a visual novel to me, considering how much easier dungeons are thus expansion and yoshi p going on record saying he wants to streamline them even more. Dungeons being streamlined even more at this point just means a visual novel where you hardly focus on the mobs and bosses and focus on the pretty lights in the background. The problem with devoting so many resources to making the game soloable is what about the people who aren’t invested or don’t care for the story? Endgame is the only thing for them and if that’s lacking then what’s the point of even playing?

I feel they should really frontload some of the repeatable combat type content for their expansions. As it stands if you're not into raiding you're looking at 2-3 dungeons for like 8 months and that just doesn't strike me as good value proposition given the sub cost. Worse still if you're into glam and have to get additional retainers due to the way the glamour system works.

It doesn't necessarily have to be "hardcore" but I feel there should definitely be more. Right now it feels like we're in a content lull and we just came off a really long one at the back end of Shadowbringers.

honestly, this game feels like it's almost always in a content lull due to the way their patch system works. We don't get that much each patch, and each patch outdates the previous, so the most useful thing old content is for is mostly just story/leveling/glamour.

They really need to make some form of content that either scales with each patch in a expansion cycle or just provide more activities that are not necessarily something to power us up. The farm is a good step imo, but there really should be more.

What I would really like to see is a Mythic Weapon/Gear. Something that is basically a hq relic weapon. Maybe have us make all prior relics and fuse them into a mythic or utilize extreme and ultimate content as a way of powering them up. Even use the beast tribes as a way to get items since once you complete them there is absolutely no reason to go back. It would be grindy, yes, but if it's worth it, it's worth it. I would also love a way to power up our job specific gear in lieu of tomes. Then alongside of making them stronger, the first step could make them dyable, next step change their appearance slightly, repeat.

We can still have relics but giving us an option that is not just a fate grind like Eureka or Bozja would be amazing.

Tbh, I just don't think people understand the direction or design of the game. It's almost always been this way. Like I said, this isn't a 24/7/365 game. It is purposefully designed to not take up your entire week and Yoshi-P has said in the past it is intended to be this way. They WANT you to play other games, they don't want you to be confined to a single game as other MMO's would force you. I've been playing since ARR, I have like 80% of the achievements done. On paper, there isn't a lot for me to do. I raid with my static three days a week, log in every now and then to do roulettes, level a job if I am in the mood, PVP, gold saucer(specifically TTT), then I log out. I enjoy that I have the freedom to play other things and not feel left out of something in this game. Expansions are all about story, some people didn't grind it out in 2-3 days and some took weeks to finish. There are people who still haven't cleared all the floors of the Savage Raid tier either. So in a month we will get new content, content that will tie us over till the next content, and so on and so forth.

Content that scales with each expansion would probably be a pain to balance. The closest you have is content that is still mildly relevant regardless of the expansion such as PotD/HoH, Eureka/Bozja, PVP, and anything else that is sync'd. Like it's been mentioned. They design content from new to veteran players, casual to hardcore. They try(not always succeeding let's be honest) to hit the middle ground while also ensuring it does not consume all your time. You could say that this is lazy game design, by not putting in more content whether required or optional(let's be real, if you are a real gamer all optional content is required lol), but it helps me not feel burnt on the game and get legitimately excited for new content.

The problem is it does feel like a cop out way of just not giving us more content. The problem here is though when they then take away the little bit of endgame content we get. Like them taking away some dungeons that we’d normally get in shb, or the deep dungeon. Yoshi p acted surprised so many people wanted it and it’s like….just how out of touch with their playerbase are they? Of course people would be upset about the loss of deep dungeon it’s one of the few endgame things to do. They are putting far too many eggs in one basket aka msq, which is a one and done thing, instead of endgame which is what the rest of the game relies upon.

So you recognize this has been a long time issue and they could do better just like us... but when it comes to me I just don't like how things end very quickly especially relic farm which is supossed to be the time sinks and very optional are kinda limited? Once you are done you are done and bozja you are done with it very very quickly. The best time I've had in this game was with eureka but that also ended... Mmorpgs and other online games usually have currencies you wanna always be getting but when it comes to xiv gil is used for nothing more than housing and week 1 savage so even if you can get gil from eureka and bozja its not enough reward to want you to keep playing. This game has a replayability issue not a lack of content issue.

If a public space in the game turns them off, why are you even looking at ffxiv? You are aware of what MMO means?

I seriously dont get where people's knickers get into a twist about the whole thing, its almost as if they desperately wanted to have Venat be this manipulative evil villian all along because that just tends to be the case in most jrpg stories with gods and what not but they pulled the twist that her decisions werent so black and white as we were led to believe.

Venat's plot ultimately prevented the acceleration of the heat death of the universe an the end of all existing life, even if it wasn't without sacrifice. IDK why people get so pissy about it. It's all Hermes' fault for being reckless AF and deploying what amounts to a swarm of a highly experimental AI drones based on barely understood theoretical principles, without a single test, oversight or peer-reviewing.

Perhaps the surprise was due to internal statistics regarding how many people actually played through Heaven on High vs Palace of the Dead. If I saw a drop in players accessing a feature that covered two expansions, and I had other things to work on, I too would drop that feature, or at least not continue it into the next expansion.

As for "normally get", remember that ARR was mostly planned out before release, and the amount of work needed to complete it while they were also working on Heavensward was high enough that SE basically delayed the first patch of HW for two months in order to give them a break.

Then there is that slide (comparing 3.3 to 5.3) from the last Live Letter that does much to explain why the developers aren't off chasing things outside of their already plotted plans for 6.x. As always, SE is already starting work on 7.0.

And here is my personal opinion, i think they need to slow their roll and stop planning things so far ahead, when there are major problems with what they release. You’re right, and they’re most likely already planning job changes for 7.0, meanwhile we’re stuck having to deal with the horrible job adjustments released only 2 months ago. If this ends up the same as ShB, it seems they can’t sustain the present, and only keep moving things to the future. While also looking to change things in past content or even reusing past content. See:Unreal trials, which are quite literally just ARR extremes with nothing but more hp and damage. It’s nothing new outside of the mini game. People talk about these things for years and nothing happens. Look at housing. People have complained about it for 6-8 years and it’s only just now getting addressed. All people are asking for is more endgame or even just more diverse end game content.

Mmm. I, for one, am very much over peoples' obsession with endgame. MMOs, to me, are about the world and the people in it. There's more to that with finding a group for a dungeon in an old-school way, or in world PvP, than creating a static group of 8/15/whatever hand picked people who are just like you to see a number go up to simulate what's effectively, at that point, just a sports team.

But I think forced grouping content kind of died out over time because it's nearly impossible for developers to manage it in a way that's healthy for their playerbase, there are too many bad incentives. It worked back when MMOs were relatively niche, streamers weren't much of a thing, and people were incentivized to learn the game with others at a pace that was sane. And in large part, these things happened specifically not at endgame. Endgame is often where the MMO goes to die.

So I'm not really surprised with devs moving to soloification and disentangling reliance. Especially when people are increasingly audibly angry at players that they perceive to be insufficiently skilled.

In-game, at least, on my server, everyone seems quite happy with the available content, including some people who have terrifying amounts of gametime.

Problem is overworld is dead and offers very little incentive to return to it after msq, and people wise most people nowadays turn to discord reddit or twitter for their interactions or in game content. The game doesn’t offer that much in terms of getting people together. Everything is done through duty finder. The difference between 14 and other mmo’s is 14 heavily places emphasis on the msq. And if you want to talk about this game not getting people together, go to the numerous RP events. Were you there for "Chi in 5min"? Never seen so many people in one spot in my life.
- Yes, this game is very much about MSQ, because this game cares a LOT about it's story. If that's not your style than this for sure isn't the game for you lol.

Like I have said. A lot of people enjoy the story driven game. A lot of people enjoy the pacing. Could it be better? Of course, but please don't try to force this game to be another game that it's not, otherwise we would all be playing that game.

??? No one is trying to force the game to be another game. They’re asking for more endgame. The game is making record profits, they can afford it. Yes all that content was spoken about in the live letter. Is it out yet though? No it’s not. Deep dungeon if it follows the trend won’t be out for a year. Relic quests won’t be until august. The content isn’t there atm, and just because they say it’s coming doesn’t mean it actually is. It’s an mmo, not just an rpg, they need to start acting like it. Not everyone is going to enjoy the story/writing decisions the writers make.

When they're incohesive with what could naturally be extended from the given game, yes.

But let's not forget what was being asked for here to already be met with "well, go play something else":

• More fixtures of RP, especially in making a character of/for ourselves beyond just the scope of our silent emote responses in the MSQ.
• Things that make us want to go out into the (semi-) open world with other people and do social things, ideally beyond just the carrot and stick of relic grinds and hunts.
• More widely available housing that isn't demolished if we want to take time off for more than 44 days at a time.

Of those, only the last isn't what we'd already have expected from an MMORPG.

I don't find the overworld that dead. I mean, I'm in ARR areas half the time for crying out loud and there are plenty of people there still doing random stuff. I've played WoW and I'd often be the only person around for miles in old areas. So I don't think it's that bad.

I don't think I've seen a game help other people socialize outside of forced grouping since....... SWG cantinas. It's not an easy problem. Too much dependence generates friction. Developers don't want to spend their time designing a mini-government I bet. I personally get a lot of mileage out of NN but of course that's not accessible to everyone.

In terms of end game: it would totally suck to enforce any more gated content like tombs and beast tribes, which results in wasting their players time through unnecessary padding than is actually necessary. They could implement more explorer content like Xenoblade's playground overworlds or anything that like teaches the lore or the current world's societies and businesses like in Final Fantasy Tactics, or Xenosaga, or Star Ocean till the end of Time ingame encyclopedias which I really adored. I really like the Voidsent doll maker stuff from the lore and the little quotes the hid in them are really nice touches. Voidsent BT quests using models based on the minions available could be really fun

Incresing the number, options, features, and size of apartments would also be a total game changer. Imagine what you could do with like flush walls, terraces, parking, and twice the space to decorate with

They’re already taking longer per expansion now since they increased the breaks time. Considering they can’t seem to sustain the present content and job system yes, i think they need to take a step back and address the current problems. I haven't run across any threads in the last few years that are asking for RP in-game. Do you mean choices that affect how the game goes foward? That's easy enough to do in a single player game, and an absolute nightmare in a shared world.

FATES and Hunts are out there. I fail to see what 'social things' people who RP aren't already doing in the open world. You'd have to give examples - just don't use FFXI as an example, please. There isn't anything exciting about traveling long distances through areas where you could be killed for no purpose, especially when there is flight in the game. This game does not have an exploration minigame. Such a minigame would require turning off flight in all areas you could possibly play it.

SE had a concept for housing beyond most other games of the day. Most MMORPGs didn't have housing. If they had housing, it was instanced. You can experience instanced housing right now, without fear of the FC room or apartment suddenly disappearing.

I've played other MMORPGs with housing, and this game has by far the richest set of furnishings and themes. The fact is housing is hardware intensive, and thus limited because of the housing features, which is why they don't promise to maintain your house forever and ever.

I suppose they could make massive changes to the housing system, basically turning houses into multi-level apartments or something, with no neighborhoods or external areas for housing. Would that work for you?

Offer up some ideas beyond "make more houses available". What are you willing to lose in order to grant housing for every player, in perpetuity. It isn't going to happen with the current design.

I have many friends I'd like to bring into the game, but it will never happen. The mere fact that this game connects to public spaces with open chat makes it a no go for most of those types. This is kind of a lot of resources to dedicate to things.

Meanwhile, many years later, our entire end game is still six total encounters, for half a year. The lack of growth is, as always, pretty disappointing. I really figured by this point we'd have more meaningful dungeons or at least a few more bosses at launch.

I'm not much of a malcontent here, I don't want large changes or weird mandatory grinds. I love the game, I love the combat and flow of it all, I just want a bit more to do (especially early expansion). I don't even really care about rewards, I just wanna play more and keep my friends who DO like MMOs interested longer.

I agree with this. While I think "lousy" is too harsh a term, I do wish there was more content to crack into as a level 90, so that I've got more opportunities to practice unfamiliar Jobs. When I do expert each week, I try to use Jobs that are not my main, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes I get busy and can't play as much, so I end up using a Job that's very familiar just to make the run go smoothly.

These aren't my own ideas --only the ones mentioned most recently before the typical retort of "go play something else"-- so I can't defend or interpolate each accurately on their originators' behalf.

My point was merely that these things aren't so different from XIV that "go play something else" becomes the more reasonable solution; they lie solidly within expansions we've already seen in XIV of what the game provides and entails.
