Back Paddling is horrible.

sorry for another post, but I just want to stress out one thing,

because it is not your PREFERENCE, it doesnt mean it is HORRIBLE. Consider the process that dev has been through to make this as default movement control. Saying it is horrible, implying the devs did not know what they doing, while the fact is, this control scheme is a STANDARD in the industry.

I feel bad for the dev if every their decision is labeled horrible, just because the person did not like.

and you should be grateful, the XIV 1.0 movement scheme will be an option

Exactly. So if most of the time you aren't fighting, and when you aren't fighting you turn your direction,

its very clear that it's more natural to turn by default and to back pedal only under certain circumstances (ergo: target or an extra button). Currently in 2.0 you ALWAYS pedal back when pressing back, and in order to turn around you need to press an extra button.

Yes, turn around. Not instantly flip directions in the blink of an eye. Hence what people have been saying about having to turn.

Its standar by WoW, which is dominant in the industry. So other MMORPGs have been trying to copy their forumal to success or maybe clones in order to steal away their players.

XI did well without this system. 1.0 did well (regarding that matter) without copying it too.

It wasn't standard in FF:Franchises. There was only one other game. And the reason XI didn't have it is probably because EverQuest didn't. :/

You guys who use the whole "wow clone" thing always have arguments that lack substance. Explain why it's bad as opposed to why it's a copy and people might consider what you have to say.

I disagree with OP.

When pressing "s" backpedaling by default is more natural for pc gamers who use mouse and keyboard. 'w' key should always make your character walk forward and 's' to walk backward. If you want to run away you right click with mouse then move it left or right to turn your character and camera at the same time continue to press 'w' so your character is moving in the direction he/she is facing.

I hated the keyboard and mouse controls in FFXIV 1.0.:mad: I ended up buying a xbox 360 controller because the controls were obviously designed with controller in mind. With a analog stick it's natural to have you character move in the direction of the analog stick and the other analog stick to turn the camera. We haven't see the controller layout for 2.0 so don't panic yet!

I played GW2 for a short time and I didn't miss the controller one bit because it has standard MMO controls for keyboard and mouse.

IMO the keyboard and mouse controls in the alpha looks to be headed in the right direction for a wider PC audience to accept it.

Please, find and quote the person who is asking for us to only have the abillity to "Walk forwards" in 1.0 I could walk side-side, I could backpedal, and I could walk forward. In 2.0 you can Strafe, and backpedal, the only difference is that I no longer have a simple option to start running backwards like I normal human being can.

Unless you stop to shuffle and turn everytime you move...the movement is now more restricting than it was in 1.0. I know people are hooked on the whole Mouse-movement option, but I don't see why your so hellbent on making everyone else use it. Chances are 2.0 will have 2-3 control schemes allowing keyboard and gamepad users to move-play similar to 1.0, They probably only have the Mouse-keyboard layout ready for Alpha.

No, it shouldn't I will continue to voice my displeasure at the scheme as it's the only confirmed one we have. While back pedaling wasn't present in all of FF games, turning around in the direction you press without holding an extra button is. So this is standar for final fantasy games.

wat. Did you even play this game? When you were fighting, you were locked onto your target most of the time, which enabled you to backpedal. Want to run? Simply lock out and move in whichever direction you want. You want to keep facing your target? Well, stay locked onto it. It's like people aren't aware that backpedaling was already in the game. What's being argued in this thread is not whether it should exist or not, but that it should NOT be the default. I think it should be left as it used to be as well. There are situations when you want to run away from something, and I don't want that to take any other extra steps.

And to those who keep repeating you just have to turn your camera with your mouse, keep in mind that not everyone likes to play with one (I, for one, hate it and think it's completely out of place in most 3D games except FPSs) and that this will also be a console game.

I don't recall anyone supplying you with a defense such as "WoW did it". No one gives a fuck about WoW, it's just natural. All the games that have back-pedaling has a button that allows you to turn 180 degrees. I can't see how you still have an issue.

And here, I, and another person have given a reason why back-pedaling is useful outside everyone's apparent "Wow did it" defense.

Exactly, you can't parry if your back is facing the enemy. I think some people have forgotten that we can be attacked in 4 different directions. This gives us a retreat while having the ability to block or parry enemies.

And it's especially important for pvp. But I don't think you'll be a fan of pvp since it likely won't be like XI's intricate and immersible pvp system.

Claiming its not "because WoW did it" to "because other non ff mmorpgs have done it" is basically the same.
This is movement setup that was standarized because of WoW and games trying to copy it. Its awkward and convoluted.
There is an already better, more natural, alternative that works on gamepads aswell: 1.0's method.

Your wow argument is old and the only reason you don't like it is because you want to use a controller just admit it. Every time you bring up WOW did it to it just makes you look dumb sorry... but it is not even close to the only mmo that does I know of about 7 off the top of my head and its because its a natural pc movement. Not to mention Tanks and ranged need backpedaling. I can tell you really won't understand how good it is till you either pvp which I know you wont just by your posting and tough fights were moving while tanking and or dps-ing is a big deal. Ya you can back peddle in battle but only when you are locked onto a target which again restricts freedom. In both wow and RIFT you can be locked on to a target and still have complete freedom of movement with backpedaling. Its just you can't use a fancy controller. Secondly this control scheme is good to help any mmo player out there conform to FFXIV 2.0 not just wow lol... were did you even get that argument?

You DO backpedal IN BATTLE, it's already been said, and what the OP means is not for it to be taken out of the game, but for it not to be the default movement scheme. As in, not out of battle. If anything being forced to backpedal all the time is more restricting than anything I'm used to using my camera to keep a watch on my surroundings while my character continues to move forward. I'm not really a fan of my camera dictating my movement direction.

Sure you can unlock the camera but the controls look less than wieldy. Personally I feel that the current Control scheme they have in Alpha and one akin to our current one will both show up, room for everyone to play how they want. I don't see any reason that the system would restrict us from having both control schemes.

No, he's right. When you were locked on your movement was restricted. You couldn't strafe to the side, only in a circle, it also limited your camera movement. They eventually relaxed the camera restriction, but it was still there and still annoying.

back peddling is handy. With changes, its needed. Wait and see. You can still quickly reverse direction. Want to strafe , then strafe, wnt to step back with ranged attacks, then do it, want to switch direction and run, you can.

I wouldn't look at alpha videos for creating posts. Not everything is shown in that department.

Its bad for an mmo yes it restricts what you can and cannot do.

It has not in the 8 or so years I have been playing MMOs. And before you repeat that already burned out "then you haven't played any MMO but 11 and 14", I have, and having to play with a keyboard and a mouse has always felt unnatural and uncomfortable as hell in any MMO BUT good old Ragnarok Online. And to this day, I like that game better than any of the more popular MMOs out there. I found the controls on the more modern and popular ones so damned annoying that I couldn't bring myself to play them for a month. And I tried multiple times.

You can't? Or you won't? I understand how everyone here feels about their choice in control methods for various games. Agree, maybe not, but understand, easily. First/Third Person MMORPGs work almost the same as an FPS control wise. Plus the more action oriented the game is, the more of an advantage the keyboard/mouse setup has.

Yes I'm sure you can still do it. With a keyboard and mouse. It seems to me however console users will be a different story and need something else. Turning the camera will be like the difference between playing an FPS on console or pc, putting console players at a disadvantage.

And since they need something else, why even use the typical system when the system they had already accomodated everyone, k+m as well as console.

Your right I know nothing of mmo's lol I have only been playing them for 6 years... why would you even say I have never played an mmo then say backpedaling is dumb it literally makes no sense in the same sentence... I am trying to tell you that if you change your ways on the control of your character you will be an amazing player you have to learn these new controls in any modern mmo. I had a 2310 rated arena team in world of warcraft back in Cataclysm. I can't even begin to explain how hard that is to do... maybe others on here will know.

please enlighten me, what is the advantage of having the backward move key turned into a walk backward key rather than a turn around and run key. what functional advantage does this have that makes it so much better

create an account in world of warcraft or SWTOR and i will show you first hand. there are many reason. some have to do with control some have to do with dodge/parry/miss, RNG some games make you take more damage from the back side, some games daze or confuse your toon from the back side.. but I guess if you can take out all of the above mechanics out of final fantasy xiv and well make it boring as hell then sure go ahead add a run back key. but if you ran away from my monk in wow or my assassin in SWTOR you would pay for it with your LIFE lol... just kidding but really, you would.. I know in wow especially in pvp running form a melee that is not crowd controlled or stunned or somthing is about the worst thing you can do. by putting your back to a melee in wow for example. you lose all ability to dodge/parry or have them miss you, and you have small chance to get dazed and take critical hits more, which would make sense in real fight. But pvp aside Pve content is made much easier to see and control your toon in relation to boss. Again if you want to take all the mechanics out of a game so that the back side no longer matters then sure do it but have fun in that snooze fess.

But anyway backpedaling is probably in the game to stay. And apparently, so is the ability to go 180 a-la 1.0. The problem is that console users need a way to have the same level of mobility to perform this 180 turn and not be auto-gimped into "keyboard turners" just because they don't use a mouse.

What lol? Not true. You can always turn the camera any way you want if you're just hanging out with LS/FC members or whatever. You'll see your face often if you want to..

As far as backpedalling it's actually easier and gives you more control. Using the right mouse button to turn quickly and precisely is something that might take getting used to for some people but once you got it, you'll find that it's an easier way to control your character. I want to say 'in my opinion' cause everyone's different but I don't think it's something you could dislike once you get used to it. Maybe I'm wrong but when you learn how to do it efficiently, it's not going to hinder you.

But on PS3 I can't see this being a great thing at all. That's a different story because you can't do a 180 instantly like you can with a mouse. Your camera will move at a certain speed no matter how far you're pushing that right thumbstick. They'll be at a disadvantage especially in PvP no matter how you look at it. Nothing you can really do about that.. It's a matter of controls.

wow I can't believe how rude people are getting over this subject. To each their own. Some people find the default restraining, some like it.

People are saying: "oh I have played mmo's more/longer than you so I KNOW what your preference should be!"
If that was the case, wouldn't the games designers not even allow us to re-map buttons?

Really? well since u wanna hear more imma tell you.
In FFXIV you could be normally walking in any direction when outside of battle but also lock on the target when in combat mode and backpaddle or whatevs it's called. now in ARR backpaddling is an ALWAYS ON effect. you can't really turn it off and turn your camera around your character. the character will turn around with the camera and you will allways bee seeing his back.
Did you get this?

As far as backpedalling it's actually easier and gives you more control. Using the right mouse button to turn quickly and precisely is something that might take getting used to for some people but once you got it, you'll find that it's an easier way to control your character. I want to say 'in my opinion' cause everyone's different but I don't think it's something you could dislike once you get used to it. Maybe I'm wrong but when you learn how to do it efficiently, it's not going to hinder you.

But on PS3 I can't see this being a great thing at all. That's a different story because you can't do a 180 instantly like you can with a mouse. Your camera will move at a certain speed no matter how far you're pushing that right thumbstick. They'll be at a disadvantage especially in PvP no matter how you look at it. Nothing you can really do about that.. It's a matter of controls.

Well so far all vids i have seen from alpha when he turns his camera around the character always turns too. I aint in Alpha so i only see what they show in the vids.
