So, pretty dead lately....

Famfrit is pretty much dead, the only thing that I see in the PF are pony farms which I find extremely boring, if I see a bismark or ravana clear party I usually join just to help them but now there is nothing in the PF. Yesterday someone found two A rank really close at the Hinterlands and only 8 people showed up (myself included) and we waited like 20 minutes, also I used to play with 3 friends all the time but they stopped playing like two weeks ago, so I level up 2 more classes to 60 just to do something different but at this point Im just sick of the same dungeons and grinding, I tried crafting but I quit after two days, I need patch 3.1 now!!

Which is a shame. It was fun in the past, back when Coil was relevant; if still a bit anemic on things to do between weekly resets, but Alex Savage is a pile of shit and I cannot justify wasting $12 a month to cap esoterics exclusively during the 2 month interim between the release of new content. The fact we're getting less content per patch now is pretty disgusting given 1.0 is a distant memory and SE plans to sell us annual expansions.

That's not the server being dead though. That's the content finally outliving its usefulness. There's little reason to do Bismark and Ravana EX at the moment. Either people have already done them as many times as they needed or they have their Eso weapon so there's no point for them to do it again besides maybe for an alt class or glamour. Hunts are reaching the end of their rope too since most people don't need i180 equipment anymore and have already gotten the other Centurio rewards as well.

On Diabolos I rarely see people doing Bismark or Ravana anymore and I see hunts being called less and less every day, but I still see tons of players running about wherever I go. All of the towns are still busy ,low level areas still have a lot of activity, and even the popular FATE-train areas regularly have multiple groups running around them. There might have been a small drop-off of "familiar" faces, but otherwise you'd be hard pressed to notice any real difference in the server's population.

I pretty much agree with all you've said. And yeah, it needs the latter half for this game to continue to at least hold my interest, or begin to go in a good direction to get people to stay. I will be shocked if they put in a new currency and useful gear from it. Let's hope its not another glamour thing....D:

That's not really an apt analogy.
Yeah a movie might cost $12 but that represents potentially hundreds of millions of dollars invested in writing, acting, filming, special effects, etc. to produce the final product.

I can't agree more with this. I want to slap them for taking my second favourite Final Fantasy location and using it in the way they have. Who in the blue hell is testing this stuff? Yoshi P says the Golden Saucer is fun. Where by? Did he play "Skin Change We Can Believe In" and say "Outstanding, this was full of laughs and excitement, players will love this and shout my name in endorsement! And I want data on that. The players need to know I'm loved."

When I saw the notes about the upcoming game I was disappointed on a huge scale because it has Grind written all over it. I've said it before on this forum. Use the mini game ideas from Pokemon Stadium because they were real fun, forget rewards and titles, just something we can play with friends and have fun with.

Only reason i'm continuing my sub is because i'm a raid leader. Subscribing for only 4 months of the year still cuts their income by 2/3rds (well, 50% if we include the expansion).
Either SE is content to rest on their laurels by appealing to the casual playerbase who're happy with the current release schedule: and despite how much of an asshole I might appear to be I wont disparage people for not devoting their lives to this game; or they'll have to shape up and release more content to tide over those that have the desire and drive to login once a day. "FFXI" might be a dirty word around here but the developers could stand to take a few leaves from its book. Notorious Monsters, dungeons you explore within a time limit, dungeons in the overworld, frontier work helping out NPCs and defending caravans/fortifications from legitimately dangerous mobs, enemy raids on towns like XIV used to have with the Atomos events in 1.0.
I say all that and I've never actually played XI. But I wish I had. Because it sounds awesome.

Nonetheless, if the pattern of Tome farming + Hardcore raid + Casual raid continue past 4.0 I'm simply going to stop playing. I like the story but the game is extremely bad value for money and it's honestly just not worth the bother.

Out of curiosity, but what content could they possibly make that will make people "not bored"?

You've also got stuff like the Gold Saucer.
Here's another idea: Add combat GATEs to the Event Square rotation. Then add Battle Square as a sort of roguelike Light Party dungeon with dynamic iLv scaling and increasingly difficult waves of enemies with RNG-handicaps. Make the final boss harder than Savage Coil/Alexander even without handicaps and award like 1 million MGP for clearing it all (with the assumption people wont for a long time). Then add slightly sub-raid level gear to the MGP vendor so it's a viable method of obtaining gear. Any worse than the equivalent of i200 in the current patch cycle, or without auxiliary effects/procs, and it's pointless though.
The reason people love FFVII's GS is because the rewards are good and the minigames are fun in their own right. XIV's is an embarassment, and all the protracted RNG/grind bullshit does is alienate people. Yoshi is deathly afraid of people having fun, but if Chocobo racing were more like Mario Kart I'd be playing it right now.

University classes started up again.

Since the dawn of mmos, people have still gone to work and school and still played mmos just as much lol Maybe if its dying down because of school/work, its because they realize XIV has no staying power / much of anything fun, so they actually enjoy being off the game. Which again, defeats the purpose of a MMO.

The point of a mmo is to keep people coming back every day, whenever they can, even if its is getting out of school/work and coming home and getting on. Imo, if a mmo makes people feel like they should unsub for months or only play for 2-3 days a week, then it's failing it's purpose as a mmo. I remember when older mmos had the goal in mind "let's make worthwhile content to keep people playing as much as possible and make it fun, so they don't get burnt out within a week or two" and guess what, those mmos still continue to this day.

If XIV continues the current trend, I really don't see it lasting another 2 years and it'll just be added to the pile of "big waste of money/development" that a majority of the mmos in the last 10 years have gone to within 1-2 years or less of their release. Reading interviews and everything from SE, you can tell it's heading toward this already, seeing as how before 2.2, Yoshi said they'd rather pull the plug than go f2p, then shortly after, did a 180 on that statement saying he'd consider f2p.

And how does any of that equate to fun and will last x amount of months between patches?

Just bouncing from these ideas. Combat GATEs will just go the same as normal GATEs, big for a month then forgotten.

A battle arena wouldn't be bad, except I honestly cant see them getting dynamic ilvl scaling to work (it will either be really hard or braindead easy. No in between), but it'll still be hot for a month then fall off. A final boss harder than Savage Alexander but the end rewards being sub-raid level gear? Yeah that'll never happen (Like really. It can't.)

The idea of putting gear for MGP is an interesting one, I'll give it that. But these ideas (at least to me) don't seem to fix whatever the problem people have is. They can add this, and people would still get bored and complain there isn't anything to do.

I know it's a pain in the ass to implement/balance, but we really need auxiliary effects and procs on gear. It's the only way to inject any kind of variety into endgame gear. And when you have diverse gear you can create different ways of handing it for individuals to gear up in-tandem over the long-term.

18hrs a week of classes. 20hrs a week to study.

Less 8hrs a day of sleep.

The issue with gear is the devs need to try to perfectly balance everything.

It is a trade off in the end. Do you want perfect balance between all jobs within a role or do you want uniqueness and the ability to add more variety.

Yoshida has made it known his views are balance is extremely important more so then variety. For me I would rather have imbalance to a degree if it removes the restrictions.

Atm our stats on gear you can literately figure you by taking a excel spread sheet and dragging columns down. That is poor game design in my eye. IS it balanced yea, but it is a bad thing in the end the loss is just too great.

Honestly in the end Balance only matters in PvP. If you try to balance everything in PvE you remove something from the game. Not only should we have a large variety of stats. Why is there no elemental weaknesses, dmg type weaknesses (We have the resistances in the stat menu already so it is built into the game), Why does the environment and weather not effect the spells/attacks. Older mmos did this, why is a state of the art mmo so stripped down of features? It all comes down to over worrying about balance. Perfect Balance for PvE is a bad thing.

And that is the big issue. How to make a grind that doesn't feel like a grind, because lets face it, there is no way you can make content that lasts x amount of months and make it not a grind. This is an old genre and quite frankly I don't think that's possible to do anymore. The old grinds people have done in FXI would probably feel like horrendous grinds if implemented today. The old grinds I did do in my early WoW days I was very much aware were grinds.

And I personally don't care for auxiliary procs and effects. Light knows I don't want to have to spam a dungeon for a specific piece of gear that will be required for something.

This has been debunked umpteen fucking times already.
After reaching 60 and hitting your stride, besides Alex Savage and Esoterics capping there is literally no other form of valid Battlecraft progression. Crafting is its own thing and is so exclusive, limited in utility and disproportionately expensive it doesn't factor in here besides for the likes of Lucrezia and Elysium.

And when I mentioned gear procs and whatnot those should ideally be available through means other than dungeons. Like Gold Saucer gear for example. Say there's "Godbert's Gloves of Healing" that give "+10% HP restored when using Cure II/Adloquiem/Benefic II". Make them cost 150,000 MGP, add in the aforementioned Battle Arena/combat GATEs and BAM, there's something for WHM and AST-players to do in their spare time.

My static blew up few days ago mainly because they found nothing has changed at all in the expansion. And to be honest yes. Dailies, run expert roulette once a day then log in for raids and that's it. Only things remaining (for me at least) is leveling up other classes but after having 5 to 60 I can't get the motivation to grind the Vault 12 times to get two levels. Some people will tell me there's still crafting and gathering but it's not big of a deal for me... Moreover when I see what they did with scrips. We were on A3 with my static and weirdly I'm getting burned out quicker than before, maybe because I have to run at least 5 times each floor every week to get my loot in rollface difficulty.

I had huge expectations for the expansion but for me it doesn't feel like one. In 3.1 they'll add a new 24 man raid and in 3.2 new 8 man raid and so on, it's been the same since the game came out and I thought it would be at least slightly different for raiders. It just feel like a bigger patch but not an expansion. Playing for 2 years but it's hard to stay entertained when only the shape changed throughout the years. People who quit once because reasons will always quit because the game hasn't change its formula.

The only problem is that something like that would rapidly turn from "something to work toward in your spare time" to "something that has to be ground out so you don't get kicked from parties for not having it".

Well you dial it in. Maybe remove the secondary stats or something.
Again, these are just ideas. But I'd argue that gear shouldn't just be thrown out once its iLv becomes outdated. There could and maybe should be gear yet released in Heavensward that, but virtue of its auxiliary effects or procs alone, renders it superior to the (solely) numerical bonuses of much higher ilv leveling gear in the next expansion.
And is there anything wrong with having certain pieces of gear be mandatory? In this context it's not like there are players without access to the Gold Saucer. If you aren't at a point to be working on content like that then you aren't at a point for it to be considered disadvantageous.

And is there anything wrong with having certain pieces of gear be mandatory? In this context it's not like there are players without access to the Gold Saucer. If you aren't at a point to be working on content like that then you aren't at a point for it to be considered disadvantageous.

If a piece of gear is mandatory, no matter where it comes from it has to be gotten. If someone where to hate GATEs with a passion unrivaled by the greatest star, but they needed the gloves from the Gold Saucer, then that guy is going to have to sit through a boring grind to get the item he needs, will complain about it endlessly, and once obtained never touch it again.

In short, its not about being unable to do it, it's about being forced to do it. Which I would have assumed, was counter to the whole "more things to do".

I'm talking about "mandatory" in the sense of top-tier progression. If someone's in a midcore static progressing in Savage Alex with friends the gloves aren't going to make or break his performance relative to his raiding cohort.
Additionally if someone's bitching about having to do a grind that, at worst takes a couple days, he probably doesn't deserve a static slot. You can get 150K over a few weeks from Mini-cactpot alone, and if there's Battle Square/Combat GATEs and gear for other classes available he's clearly not doing this "grind" without his static members.

Fighting an enemy gauntlet with randomised handicaps together with friends for multiplicative MGP rewards. How is that something to complain about? It sounds fun.

But see, then it'd give you more to do. Rather than get on, do 1 expert a day to cap by saturday and getting all 4 alex loot on tuesday, you could get on and go "I'll do expert, then get my alex loot, then work on getting X and Y pieces for whatever job." Sure, you can say it'd be a grind, but that sort of grinding feels more worth it in the end, rather than the current grind we have now of "Go get i200. Got the full set? Congratulations! That gear is junk now, here's i220!" I can bet you, a cure potency+10% hands would... hands down (pun intended) beat something of a little higher ilvl.

I say this joke to a FC member all the time lol He complains how he's always coming drk for things and I told him that he can come drg if he wants. He complains how then we might get bad tanks and I told him that if he came drg, he'd still be tanking something :P

I know this is going to draw the torches and pitchforks back, but in a way, that would be a little better than what we have now if you think about it. Look at all the people who are 15-20 ilvl lower than the required amount to get into content and just slap on tank accessories and what not. In the end, we would have better geared people, so content could be cleared easier (if you don't count the just plain bad people who refuse to learn and just bash buttons).

I'm going to sound like a jerk for saying it, but if those people refused to farm that specific gear to gear themselves better, resulting in a better (not skillwise) job, which might end up causing the people who actually want to clear the content, to keep wiping because that person won't do a simple task, then they should be kicked. I can't tell you how many times I've been the nice guy and gave people way too many chances, then the pt ends up dying. Like Titan hm in 2.0 and anything thats not a faceroll fight, whenever the pt leader kicked the poor players and replaced them, we finally won.

It would teach people to pull their own weight and not expect to get carried through content, causing unneeded stress and wipes for people who want to clear it. Don't have X gear? Looks like you're not ready to tackle Y content. It would hopefully also teach some of these entitled kids that life doesn't always work out for them. If you don't have the stuff required to clear the fight, then you're not getting it done. Right now, all XIV teaches them is that if they do 1 dungeon a day, they can get full i200 and go get carried in a fight and learn nothing.

^ This. It feels like people these days whine and moan if they have to put in any amount of effort, when back in the day, if you had to grind for something, even if you didn't like it, you sucked it up and got it done.
The community back then also made grinds fun too.

Like XI's grind to 75, sure, you can say it was a long and boring grind, but you always had people to talk to. You could make jokes, have fun conversations and make friends all while doing it. It felt like less of a grind then.

Grinds today (like XIV) are all about not being social, not making friends, not having a good time. Look at leveling a new job. Practically no one even says "Hello!" anymore and only speaks up if someone screws up, sometimes they don't even do that and just leave.

I'm no raider, but I can imagine how doing Alex Savage can get very boring very quickly due to the fact that Alex Story mode drop useful i190 gear ....now that i190 is pretty useless since there is ESO tome gear and eventually Void Arc. And what do these have in common? Weekly lockouts!

You know what else I hate? In order to be able to upgrade (and dye) gear you have to then grind __ to get the necessary item. I am somewhat happy that you can now use tomes to buy the items needed for upgrades.

Here's hoping that they'll add more variety in terms of activity since they won't be doing the 3 dungeons/patch.
