I'd say this is wrong ^^. Most heal-only healer are lacking "healburst" in extreme situation and are normally bad at healing (wiping city, dun scaith etc.) or if tanks drop to fast and vita is not enough...

Normally I let tanks drop hard, but as long as they live, who cares?
With 10% hp you are still alive and can do whatever you want to. It ends with 0, not 10 or 50%.

Here's a very brief story for you.. Levelling AST, just did my last run of Gubal. (It's my first 60 healer, normally a tank main / dps secondary).

Had a DRK that was pulling small, but after a Regen I didn't need to cast a single heal every group of mobs. So What do you people do if you don't DPS? Stand there and look at the tank, immediately casting Benefict 1 the moment they drop 1% of their health?

If you're not DPSing as a healer, then what on earth are you actually doing in a dungeon? Watching Netflix?

Sure there are times where it is difficult / next to impossible to DPS (A tank that's not popping buffs, pulls big and the only way to keep him up is back to back Benefict II's)..
That's basically the only time..

Cleric Stance exists for a reason.
Gravity / Holy / Bane exists for a reason.
Malefic II / Stone II / Ruin exist for a reason.
Combust / Combust II / Aero / Aero II / Aero III / Bio / Bio II / Miasma all exist for a reason.

What do you think those skills are for? Healing?

When i started playing A Realm Reborn, my main job was playing as a White Mage. At that time, everything duty we entered was new, so we didn’t really know what to expect in there and how we should play our own classes. I started off as a “I’m a healer, so my main focus is keeping the party alive. Not to DPS.”

As the years go by, you get more experience playing as that specific class. You (and the people around you) are starting to get better gear, making it your job easier as you go. After a while, i found myself with some spare time where the party didn’t require any healing. At first, i would just wait and brace myself for the increase in the damage the party would take, but most of the time it simply didn’t happen.

Eventually, i added a certain rule of thumb to my playstyle, which i called “Knowing your ABC”. In this case, the “ABC” would stand for:

Always Be Casting

This would mean that i would always be casting something and not stand idly by. Depending on the situation, i would either heal more (if the party was taking a lot of damage) or inserting attack spells so that we could kill things faster. This is when i started learning how to “Stance Dance”.

True enough, we all make mistakes, so things didn’t go as planned at various occasions. This had mostly to do with the vast differences between players and their skills with their classes. Not every tank is the same. You have tanks that seem to be invulnerable and don’t require any healing outside of a single Regen, or a Tank who’s HP drops to 0 in a matter of seconds.

Finding a good balance and being flexible with your skill set, is what makes you a good player. As a healer, you are not required to deal damage, but if you are standing idly by, you might as well experiment with your skill set and try inserting an attack spell here and there.

As you gain experience, your skills with the class will improve as well.

That being said, kicking healers from a party because they don’t want to DPS or they do a lot of DPS (rather than healing) is generally not OK. People should always communicate with each other and work out their problems together. And by that, i mean come to a mutual agreement and taking every member in the party into consideration (even the members who are struggling to keep up).

However, this also means that you have to put your best foot forward and give it your all. Put all of your skills to the test and try to improve yourself as well. You can only improve, if you strive to be better with each attempt. After a while you will notice that you will have less trouble keeping the tank alive during bigger pulls and maybe even dps in between healing.

“You can’t advance by standing still.”

The reason healers need to DPS (yes, need to) apart from very particular and rare circumstances is that the healing requirement for content in general is so low, otherwise they end up contributing much less than any other party member, and that is simply not fair. If the party can live with a healer casting 1 regen on tank once a minute, that's what the healer should be doing for healing part - and then use the second half of their toolkit to help the party with DPS. It's in no way "good enough" contribution for a healer to participate once a minute when the other party members are constantly using their actions to advance the group's goals.

I think it would be a good question to ask oneself, "If everyone else in my group would play at my level of effectiveness, would we be able to reach our goal in a reasonable manner?". The minimum standard should be same for healers than it is for other party members. If a tank or a DD would only use useful actions once a minute or even more rarely, the group wouldn't likely get very far.

Based on my experiences, the opposite is true. Lately I've been running Creator normal and met way too many of these "I only heal" healing partners. If they've refused to DPS or even communicate in any way (these two seem to go together), I've let them solo heal. Which they've often been completely unable to do (not able to keep tanks alive in A10 normal or in A12 add phase, for example, while no one in the party has been making any mistakes). Last time I did A12 with a healer like this, I ended up healing the group more than my healing "partner" while also DPSing...

Unavoidable AoE?
There's is definitly not much of them. Most damage can be avoided easly!
But yes, if it could be healed, healer should heal and not dps'ing lol.

But the problems in 24 man raids are, there are so many players which can't play their class or even do the mechanics they have to do.
So it's a bit different... you take so much damage and earn debuff stacks if you do something wrong or another one fails and the whole alliance has to suffer from this.

Normally i'd say yes, cast a buffed medica II on everyone, even if they have <25% life, should be enough to keep dps'ing after medica.
But through experience, i heal them up to 100% and refresh medica II cause I know, 50% or more players take a lot of damage due to ignoring mechanics.

Can't wait to see what all of you "you better be dpsing if there's nothing to heal" people have to say when the combat changes come in 4.0 and healers either can't dps at all, or their dps viability gets so nerffed it's not even worth it to switch stances.

Been doing it since early access, playing healer is already easymode near enough, if you aren't dpsing you aren't playing to your best ability or potential. I dunno what else to say, except:

LOL this is definitely not going to happen, no way. They might remove cleric stance, yes they might. But they might make MIND the stat used for attack magic on healers, then what are you gonna do then? You don't know the changes lmfao >.< None of us do!

DPSing in a way is still helping you heal, its preventing your party from taking damage in some situations: when things die faster, STUN/SLOW (WHM/SCH) is extremely good mitigations.

You're missing the point. If the combat changes towards that direction, then the players will eventually adjust to optimise for that kind of playstyle. However, what's in discussion is the CURRENT state of the game where healers are fully capable of putting out decent DPS while keeping everyone up in health without dying.

SE's actions so far have been to acknowledge healer DPSing as a playstyle but to continue to design encounters without the expectation of healer DPS. I don't share your confidence that SE will change it much.

The real tragedy of this thread is it's devolved into yet another healer DPS argument, instead of the ridiculously low bar for kicking people.

I think a lot of us would stop healing and cause some serious problems with queues also to make that viable they would have to increase the healing requirements and make more mechanics for healers to deal with which would probably affect the players who struggle with healing and can't DPS a lot more than the ones who can do both.

I would just quit playing any healer jobs. I chose healer especially because of the versatility of the role. If that's taken away, I will lose interest and try something else.

Honestly, I highly doubt it will happen. DPS has been a vital part of all healer jobs in the game since 1.0... And they've emphasised it more and more with adding more DPS skills in Heavensward and then bringing the topic up in Novice hall.

This argument is immediately invalidated by the sheer number of DPS abilities the healers have available for them - and the fact they keep gaining more and more DPS tools as they level higher.

Before level 15 - at the solo levels - WHM (Conjurer) only gets Stone and Aero. At the group content levels they get Stone II, Stone III, Aero II, Aero III, Holy and Assize (and Fluid Aura).

A healer having the job done is a healer dpsing :)

All I'm saying is when I'm playing I care what I'm doing and play my role to the best of my ability, which is dps (usually). All I care about the tank is that he/she is holding aggro, and all I care about the healer is that he/she is keeping everyone alive.

I don't care if a healer wants to dps, but you will NEVER hear me calling out a healer for NOT dpsing if it seems like the group is killing things slowly....that falls to me and the other dps.

As long as "getting the job done" only requires you to summon Eos, /follow tank and go afk, or cast 1 heal every minute or so - then no, that does not count as a good player. A good player actively contributes in a meaningful manner to advance the group's goal. This is covered by healing only in extremely rare and non-standard circumstances.

That's a separate issue though, and no one here is claiming that a healer is doing their job by leaving their group members to die, either (unless, again, in very particular circumstances).

You do know that the acc requirements on dungeons (Antitower) got lifted and one the most important reason for adding materia slots to current gear was healers complaining about not even having the option to dps properly?

If at all, they make it more easy to deal dps comfortably (like getting rid of CS and acc), therefore making it even more common.
Sure, they can dumb down the numbers, but still...
A WHM in ex roulette can deal 800+ dps through the whole run (without getting into healing/mp issues). Make that 400 and it's still better than doing nothing, especially with no stance dance (which means almost no risk).

It's not a bonus anymore since Devs pointed out that the included the healers DPS potency on the gordias raids.

The 3 current Healers use Direct/Regen and Shielding, while providing limited dps.

What we currently lack is a Healer with a bigger focus on offensive play. I'd love to play a healer that functioned by Healing as a product of dealing damage. Its the only other kind of healing we could get, unless you go for a hp drain style similar to Chloromancer from Rift.

Put on ilvl 150 gear. Go to Azys lla and use ONLY Stone I to kill things for a while.
It'll get real old, real fast.

Group content starts at level 10 by the way, Well before Stone II or any other DPS spell.
Guildhests may not be challenging endgame content, But it is still an introduction to party play.

If a player chose to start as a (CNJ)WHM, that WHM needs to be capable of actually killing things in MSQ quests, Leves and side quests.
Could you imagine trying to get from 1 - 60 via questing as a (CNJ)WHM with your ONLY damage spell being Stone I?
SE clearly thought that'd suck, so they made sure to give the Job adequate damage dealing spells that were flavorful to the Job without being the focus of the Job.

With Heavensward and the increase in mob HPs, healers again needed some assistance, hence, improved damage spells were added. Also for flavor. Who knows.

In party play, a Healer Heals things. Thats its focus, its purpose. Are you, the player, capable of performing that role and then doing more? If you can, awesome! Keep on doing that. Meanwhile, the ones who cannot (for whatever reason) will continue to muddle along performing adequately for the role.
Healer dps is optional and supplemental in Party play, Healers were not designed from the ground up with DPS in mind.
When a Healer does DPS in a dungeon when I'm tanking, i welcome it as a pleasant surprise (as long as I'm not getting splatted through lack of heals). Its just a bonus to me, a slightly faster run.
I will never enforce DPS on a healer that isn't interested or capable just because they have the spells.
Otherwise we'd be forcing Summoners to heal themselves just because they have Physik.

Lastly; Sheer number of dps skills? A WHM has 4 Single target spells, 1 AoE, a defensive spell and a Heal on a cooldown that also happens to do damage.
There is no rotation beyond applying DoTs and then spamming Stone or Holy.

Again, I don't care what you are doing as long as you are performing the role you signed up for well. Any utilities you want to use outside of your normal role are a bonus. That's all I'm saying. Again, I said you won't see me calling out a healer for not dpsing. If they want to great.

This is extremely bad logic. Doing the 'just good enough to get by' doesn't make them good. It makes them Passable. Students don't bring home D's on tests and get told "You did just good enough to get by! You're such a good student!" Doing just enough to pass, is mediocre at best. And as a community, we shouldn't strive for mediocrity.

Who would you prefer to fill the healer slots? If you didn't select #2 I suggest you seek medical attention. Happy pills are in your future.

I'm just going to say that all healers that don't DPS while they don't have anything else to do are bad (except if they are preparing for incoming or some stuff like that, I know I need to say this because you are really good at taking things out of context and just picking the sentences that fit your narrative). Clearly you don't live in Australia, where schools are discouraged from using letter grades on schoolwork for fear of hurting the feelings of the other kids who didnt do so well.

You are correct that we shouldn't STRIVE for mediocrity. But you're playing an MMO, Not everyone is going to be playing as seriously as you clearly are.

Some people strive for perfection. Others are content to be merely passable. People are different. You will encounter 'casual' players who don't play with a bleeding edge progression mindset. Just accept that there will be times when your run will take a few minutes more than others.

I'm not telling you to accept it as the norm.
I'm only asking you to tolerate those who aren't as good as others you play with, as long as you can still clear the content with those players, does it really matter? A win is a win. A dead boss will drop the same loot if killed 1 second before hard enrage as it would if you had killed it 10 seconds after engagement.

If its going too slowly for YOUR taste, you are actually free to leave the duty yourself and try your luck on the next DF group.

Except the Novice Hall doesn't say that.
The Novice Hall simply informs a potential new Healer that when they're not required in their primary role (Party hp full etc), they can in fact apply some DPS.

Essentially, the game is telling you that its ok to help DPS, But Healing comes first.

Being encouraged to do a thing is not the same as that thing being enforced.

Every role provides you a different gameplay like every job. The thing is, casual content (everything out of Savage runs) has been designed in a way you don't need to heal 24/24h and this applies to some Savages turns too.
If you're aren't healing you should be doing something else that ain't slacking around when your party members are trying their best to clear the content for you. Since you've got 3 things to do as a healer: healing, pre-cast incoming damages, dpsing.
If no heal is needed and nothing big is coming, you have to DPS that's all.

Because these roles are required. At the BARE MINIMUM, these are our required roles, but this is not and SHOULD NOT BE all they are expected to do.

The tank is required to keep aggro from the enemies and keep the party safe. But that doesnt require their full attention. They reach a point where they have such a hold on aggro that the other party members are most likely not going to pull anything off of them for awhile. Based on the ideas in this thread, at that point they should just stop. They have aggro, its maintained, so their job should be done. No more attacking unless they start to lose a mob and have to regain some of the aggro.

It's no different for healers. As a WHM main, I can guarantee that healing doesnt require our full attention. At some points yes. At larger pulls, yes. But even then we have tools to make the healing extremely simple. Protect to numb the damage some. Regen and Medica II to cause a constant regen effect. Asylum to improve this Regen effect even more. While the tank has three things constantly healing them, there's usually at least seven or eight seconds of downtime between having to cure the tank back up. Say you have to cure the tank three times during a pull. That's almost half a minute of just standing around doing nothing. That doesn't seem like a lot no, but figure it up. All the pull's in a dungeon, all the downtime of just standing around, it adds up. It's a lot of wasted time.

To answer your question, we queue as the roles because, at the bare minimum, those are the requirements of the job. But we should not STRIVE to do the bare minimum. That's just laziness.
