But theres many resources they can look up to help themselves, finding more indepth explanations of what to do rather than hoping randoms in DF will explain how to play their role. Why should you expect randoms in DF to explain something you could have easily found out yourself? Show some initiative. Also theres a difference in "Games" solo player games, you can do what you want, multiplayer games, what you do affects others too. It's upto you if it's positive or negative, being lazy is negative.

A pity that the class quests are easy and most of the time let you slide without paying too much attention. They even give you echo right from launch for these quests so you can brute force things while ignoring most of the quest if you fail. I found this out while trying to finish the dragoon quest when I didnt have a vpn to keep my connection stable. I took every single aoe the drg in the final quest aimed at me and I died multiple times and each time I kept getting stronger. Would have been better if the game didn't let me pass just like that, even if latency was the one holding me back.

Did a Brayflox HM run with a 50 WAR/15 GLD. Full crafted 90 gear, no materia at all. Didn't have a clue on how to tank, wouldnt use defiance, no BB combo, just random attacks. Strong suspicion was a bought account tho.

Hmm.. Yeah.. But i still read everything for my class/job quests, including what they tell you during battle. It certainly does help you learn your job. Again, I'm saying that "Oh i skipped the tutorials" is a horrible excuse.

What i would do is:
1) tell that person to stop doing stuff ( after we are in a safe area and out of battle )
2) tell them / guide them to their abilities menu
3) go read each one / the ones they don't know
4)read it again
5)read it again
6) read it again
7) let it sink in
8) then let them fix their skill/ ability bars
9) pray that they have understood something
I join instances to get the job done, not to spoon feed new players.
I always checked what the ability did each time i unlocked one.
"Learn as you go" not learn at the end and struggle as you go.

This doesn't apply to every new player, but some of them are pricks. It doesn't matter how you say it, the very moment you let them know that they're doing their job wrong, they become hostile and star telling you how many Lv90's they have in WoW or start refusing to do anything at all.

My first run on Halatali as a tank back when ARR launched was annoying, at least the first half. I had a PUG who for some reason, was always attacking a different mob than the rest of us. When I switched to the one he was attacking, he would then switch to a different one, even when they were marked. He was going ahead of us and pulling, in some occasions even pulling an extra group. One time we almost wiped because he pulled an extra group but we survived, him being the only one who died. I asked him to please stop pulling and let me handle it. He got upset and on the next pull, he grabbed as many groups as he could and lured them to us. He was killed before he could reach us and because the healer didn't heal him at all, the mobs went back to their positions, then he ragequit.

Newbies can be jerks too.

However, I consider myself a veteran too (hence the I wasn't new to MMO's part). I meant to say that veterans can be cruel. I've never came across a newbie who was cruel. Some are stubborn though, I can tell you that!

I hope this straightens things out a bit.

I had the same issue, this is my first MMO, and i newnothing, uim on ps3, and havent had the keyboard at the time. I started as a tank, after coperbell mines, I decided to level up a DPS, because of how stressed out I was. (and yes I did get a keyboard, I do have my tank to 50, but I never tank XD)

Now if i see a tank strugling, I tell them not to worry, that I have their back, and if someone starts irritating comments I tell them if they don't like it to drop out of dungeon. A month ago I had in sastasha this really clueless tank, I was healing, but for every step i tried to help him as much as I could, and he actually got better from the beginning of the dungeon to the end.

EDIT: and after months I still see myself as a beginner, I read everything i can get my hands on, just sometimes I'm really stupid

I think the way to deal with harassment and difficult players is, as difficult as it may be, to just ignore it and move on. Even a small server in this game will have several thousand players, so at least in early content the likelihood of you coming across the same person again is relatively slim. Obviously if you made a mistake because you're new and someone offers genuine advice then listen to that, but if someone is just being rude for no reason other than you're new try not to let it get to you, they're clearly just the type who wants to coast through all the content and doesn't appreciate that people are at different stages.

At endgame a free company works wonders and will make your life a lot more enjoyable. Certainly the one I'm in are very helpful and don't mind dying every now and again (I hope!) whilst I'm learning to tank.

dam if you say and dam if you dont. Many times I have left instances where people had kicked new players because they said there were new. Same occurs the other way around, people kicking players for NOT saying they were new OR they were bashed that they finally went on their own accord.

You owe nothing to nobody, people that cant act as adults which some arent of course I can barely understand those, but I can understand, dont deserve the time you spend in writting this post. It is giving them too much attention already.

You will find good people out there, that will help you if you ask (they dont have the crystal ball so if you dont say they dont know you dont know) and generally are of good advice.

Only advice I can give is, if you do come across a nice person in DF who doesn't mind helping new players, ask them if they happen to be on the same server, and if so, if you can add them to your friend's list. Also, if you happen to come across a friendly healer that doesn't mind running stuff with you, get them in your party. If the DPS try to go too fast, they'll quickly find out that a tank, even if they're new, is rather nice to have around ;)

Personally, I often play white mage when signing up for a roulette, and I go in with the expectation that there will be new players. Sometimes I also sign up as monk, in which case I try to not go all out on my dps all the time if I notice the tank is struggling with enmity. Paladin I only ever really use in a full pre-made group, because I prefer to have fun, not get crap tossed at me from some dps who want to prove they're badass and do just about everything to try and pull aggro off me (which in most cases fails, but it still annoying)

Not everyone is like that. I really hope things are better for you now. If any new players are on Jenova there is a house party you can come to once you unlock going to the player housing. Details are here. For everyone else you are invited too on the Jenova server to come and have some fun. :)

It's a learning experience for most people to play this game and though some people are harsh that doesn't mean that is all there is to it. There are nice people too and fun people as well. :)

This. I usually start getting worried when I see a tank:
a) not use the right combos
b) not respond when asked if they're new
c) still continue doing their thing despite advice from other players

GLA tanks are becoming infamous to me because of the first and last one. One time it took the combined effort of me (PGL) and the healer to teach one guy who didn't know about enmity combos on GLA. He eventually got it when I laid out a rotation for him to follow, and the run went very smoothly because of it. Part of me wishes the first 2 class quests for MRD and GLA intensively focused on enmity combos. At the same time it is the responsibility of those that know to teach those that do not know, but no one can't help you if you won't ask.

Look, people die in dungeons, get over it. I don't understand why people get all butthurt when someone doesn't get away from an attack in time, it happens. So what, deal with it. Me personally, when someone flips out in chat for whatever reason, I just ignore them.

All pre-50 dungeons are pretty much a cakewalk save a few boss battles, which can be learned easily within the first run anyways. The only battle that got close to everyone bailing was the first time I hit Garuda, 3 new players 1 vet, but luckily he had the patience to stick it out with us even though we wiped multiple times. Eventually we got it, you move on.

It's the reason I don't really care for the raids all that much (I'm talking MMO's in general, have yet to really delve into it with this game), too much parser, too much "need to be elite no mistakes, etc" yeah ok buddy, have your end game, its all yours.

As a tank I can 100% relate to that.

I feel terrible every time I step into a new fight because you just know you're the reason why everyone's duty will fail.

For the record I've watched dozens of coil videos but when I went to t5 all that knowledge helped very little. You still need actual practice in the jumprope mechanics.

Just please please be patient when somebody is new. It can feel terrible even without badmouthing.

I was a noob when i started in my first MMO(ffxi) but i tried to find all info about my job before i started to play.

Before you start to play a MMO you know that you will invest many time on it, you should look for info about the game to decide wich class/job you will choose to start and read some info about that class/job.

I see that you have lvl 50 whm and with very bad equip, im sure that you have gil/points to get better equip. There are many faqs/posts about what to do when you get your first job to 50. Use google to learn more about the game you are playing.

I have no problem with people that are starting but i hate to lose my time with people that didnt use their time to learn about the game/job they are playing.

I don't get it, doing all speed runs, and need to be perfect is stressing, I want to enjoy the game, I want to learn to play and have fun. I normally ignore people who are like that, my friends make fun of me, I'm always coward dont want to do alone the dungeons, especially if first time.

And always say: I'm new to this dungeon if its first time in it, or firstimer as other job

And wanted to say even if I encountered lot of rude people, I also found lot of nice people who were ready to help and explain the stuff how to do it.

now you know, from now on you need to have keyboard while play on ps4 at all time. Silence mean yes.

Most of the time, if a player is new and he/she say/type that he/she is new, ppl will teach him/her automatic. In this case it is not the other fault you got the blame but it is your fault for not having prepare the tool for communication, in other words the USB keyboard (and they are super cheap)

My face when I read OP giving anecdote concerning his experience healing a "crappy tank", seems he isn't so forgiving deep down himself.

It seems I have been rather lucky in this game, in that I have never really experienced any problems during my early days. When I entered a new dungeon, I made sure to tell people it was my first time, and almost always a kind soul would explain the tactics and help if I was stuck. Since reaching the higher levels/endgame, I have tried to do the same with any new players I encounter.

That is not to say what the OP says isn't true, because it certainly is! I have been playing MMO's for, what, 10-14 years now? In each there have always been examples of players being utterly rude for no good reason whatsoever, from FFXI, WoW, CoH/V etc... It is one of the many undesirable aspects of gaming communities that has yet to fade, and unfortunately I very much doubt it ever will. (It should be noted that silly things like elitism and rude attitudes to new players/casuals were common long before things like DF)

The best thing to do is to not be like them OP, and continue what you are doing and helping people rather then becoming like those who upset you. An act of kindness can go along way into making a player feel happy and learn more about the game. Oh, and if you want to play tank, then go ahead and just ignore those who have a go at you for no reason! They have basically won if you let them get to you in that manner, so try not to let that be.

I know naming and "shaming" are not allowed here. How about one of you web savvy members create a site/blog/whatever that the community could use for just that purpose? If there are NEVER any consequences for rude/bullying behavior then of course things won't change. I refuse to run any dungeon unless the entire party is comprised of players I know. I have amazing rng luck that causes me to pull JA's every time I have tried to run dungeons in the past... I almost wonder if it's an American thing? Are foreign servers listing and or experiencing this crap?

Just do not worry, my first class was a tank, i started to play in beta, and this is my first MMO. I found some good friends to play on the way, and non from being a noob i'm training T9 from last month :D. When I see someone doing wrong i try to help, give advice, never get angry. Oh well, if ppl do not take my advice aftere a LOT of time... i vote yes if other ppl vote dismiss them, because u can learn to play but u can't learn to listen to other ppl advices XD

To be completely honest you're playing a game with other human beings, and you didn't bring an effective method of communication and you're suprised you had problems? I'm not saying they were right or that people in this game could use more patience, but you kind of set yourself up a little bit. Go buy a keyboard.

Help run a casual LS and attached FC that helps new people and those new to endgame.

People really are jerks, and its nothing new. Since launch have been receiving people who are new to MMO and have folks totally spazzing out on them.

Hi Serendipitii, know exactly what you mean.. my first tanking experiences as GLD we're AWFUL. Tanking Copperbell Mines as a lvl 18ish GLD back then was harder than any level 50 dungeon as WAR.. You rely so much on having dps that are disciplined enough to both attack marked targets, and watch their enmity.

Both are things most dps new to the game have not learned yet, and when 2 dps focus fire seperate targets there is nothing you can do yet except get shouted at when you loose hold on the mobs and get frustrated..

Think the problem lies with low level tanks generating WAY too little enmity before they get access to Defiance/Shield Oath, and the high enmity combos. At such a low entry level, holding enmity as a tank should not be hard AT ALL.

Low level dungeons should serve as a safe environment for people new to the game to learn the ropes, not to make them scared of ever trying to tank again.

I heard someone once say "Do not let other people in the duty finder get you down because you're the low one in the group. They are there to carry you, not the other way around, that is what they are getting their rewards for". I think there is the expectation that everyone knows everything already.

On the other hand I like to make it clear to those i go with that I am not a "badass", things will probably go south and it's likely to be my fault. If they don't like that they can leave.

There are alot of issues with online gamers these days. Had you started back in 1999, things would have been alot different. I started a warrior back in the original EQ and well like you it was my first MMO. Was the first MMO really that had a Tank/Healer/DPS setup. So it wasn't like I had anything to fall back on. It really was new lol. But anyway, it wasn't long before I was in a group.

As a warrior I was expected to tank. What the hell is that? :D Well they were patient and taught me pretty much how to do it. Now I had to pull. Yeah that didn't go well. But the group was nice enough to tough it out. Its not like any of them had tanks themselves, and well the game was relatively new so it wouldn't be like they'd be perfect at it either. But that is where the attitude was different. Players didn't expect others to know more then them.

You see, 9 times out of 10, when you play a tank. And you're not very good at it. You know because you're still learning... you're actually better at it than anyone in the group who's complaining. I mean why aren't they playing a tank? See I know how to tank. I also know when someone is still learning. And I come from an earlier generation of online gaming. Help a new tank, you have a tank for life. That's how we handled it.

As long as the new person is willing to learn and take advice, I'll help them. I don't get ticked off because of a wipe. I don't feel like its a waste of time. They're learning. Eventually they will get it down and will be awesome. Cause that's all it takes to be successful in a MMO, is willingness to learn, willingness to adapt, and determination.

But back to the issue at hand. This generation is nasty. They grew up with everything handed them. Bullies didn't bother them, and they were sheltered. Now they are in a public forum where they can be jerks without many if any consequences. As a tank you're expected to hand them a flawless and quick run. You're supposed to know the content in and out. In otherwords, you're supposed to carry their sorry pieces of human flesh through the dungeon.

See.. despite their hurtful words and elitist attitudes, and their gear. They are crappy at what they do. They know it too. They know they are bad at DPS. They know they are bad at dodging AOEs. They know they can't think outside the box and use utility abilities properly. But why should they? In their minds there are awesome tanks out there that will make up for it. Isn't it funny how that works? Have you all seen that the better geared someone is, more often then not, they aren't as good as the gear suggests?

But take heart. There are still good people out there. People like me who will heal a dungeon and work with a new budding tank. People like me who will tell those people to F-off and leave the tank alone. People like me who will let them die in the AOEs they can't get out of, let them die to the mob they pulled off the tank. People like me who will vote kick them out for complaining about a learning tank. People like me who won't tolerate the abuse.

Now.. with that said, you do have to meet us halfway. As I said, be willing to learn. Be patient. And take advice. Do you need a keyboard to communicate? Its nice. But its as simple as jumping once for yes and twice for no. I mean I can tell when someone is on a gamepad just by watching them walk. Gamepad users tend to walk a sec then run when moving. Keyboard users run immediately. So as it needing to be a necessity isn't really that true. You don't have to speak back in order to get advice, though it does help when asking questions.

Funny thing about that is when someone says you need to do more enmity show's they are a newbie too. At least in MMOs. Some of us MMO vets will use the term Agro or Hate instead due to playing Everquest or World of Warcraft. Enmity is a term only used in FFXIV to my knowledge. There's a slew of other terms and getting the lingo down will help you quite a bit. Unfortunately the list is way too long to try to post here. Best bet is to ask when you see one you don't recognize. Doesn't hurt to learn the ones from the older games too. Some of us older peeps will still use them in the heat of a moment, forgetting that they are pretty archaic lol. I still remember trying to use %t in a Praetorium run instead of <t>.

Agreed here. I think there are a lot of console players who think they can drop into this game like they would Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto and just start playing with no need for communication.

My first job to 50 was BLM. I didn't need to know the dungeons. Most dungeons I did without watching a video and I was fine. Just burn down the bad guys. lol.

My second job to 50 was WAR. Even though I had done every dungeon as a BLM, I had to backtrack and watch vids. I had to know the route through the dungeon. I had to learn certain mechanics that didn't really affect me as a caster. It isn't until the Coil DPS checks that you really HAVE to play at a high level as DPS.

Sooooo it would make sense to level up a DPS to 50 so you can get a feel for the dungeons and the mechanics.

TL;DR
Should people be nicer? YES.
Is your inexperience a valid reason to be an ass? NO.

Should you play DPS first? Yeah you probably should. If you don't, you're going to get a lot more hate than necessary.

Regardless of what class a person plays, be it DPS, Tank or Healer, did every single person on their first dungeon know there job 100% to the point that their first run and every run after has been perfect flawless? Even with players who have been here since 1.0 and know thier jobs inside and out, can every player say that even in end game every dungeon, ST, Coil etc that they do is flawless? Probably not.

If they tank dies that doesn't mean the party is going to wipe. EX: Did AV a few days ago, tank and dragoon died 2 times, if not more on Coin. I (the BLM) kited it while the healer put regen on me and got the other two up. When they died again, we did it again. Was it a flawless victory. No. Did we win. Yes. Every single class in this game has a responsibility. That's why it take 4+ people to do a dungeon.

As to your last part:

Should people be nicer? Yes, a million times yes. Inside and outside dungeons, people are just rude. It's a game people. have fun.
Is MY inexperience a valid reason to be an ass? No because if you're talking specifically to me:
1) I'm NOT rude to people in game, unless they go off first, and I'm never rude to new players I meet.
2) I've been playing since 1.0 and know my jobs. If I don't or it's new to me, I get help from friends/fc members/info online and play with my friends until I feel comfortable enough to play with people I don't know, seeing how rude they can be.
3) The original topic that she quoted was the fact that a high level player was being rude to my friend on her 2nd dungeon. So it had nothing to do with an inexperienced player being rude. It had to do with high level players being rude to a new player who had just started the game and was basically doing her first story line dungeon.

Also I would like to give an update on my friend~!

She has continued to be a GLD, learning from online sources and from us. She has successfully done the other story line dungeons, including Ifrit and joining her Grand company, with no further complaints (she adores her chocobo! heehee) and feels she's getting much better at the class which makes her even more confident. She loves GLD, is very dedicated to it and has no plans of playing anything else at the moment.

I'm glad she didn't let a high level person who told her she was doing it wrong and should play DPS take her away from what she liked, because she's becoming an really good tank. :) I'm still happy I told her not to listen to them and to keep on practicing and stay with what she wants to play. In my mind, as long as a new player listens, learns and takes feedback (not rudeness, feedback) they should be able to do anything they want too. :)

The whole point of this thread (at least the way I took it), and the OP can correct me if I am wrong, was the fact that the OP was thinking back. Remembering how it was for them when they first started and some of the rudeness that they had to deal with from other players. Now that they are high level, they can see that nothing had changed, players are still continuing to be rude to new players, putting them down in low level dungeons etc. To me it feels they are saying "this was my experience back in XYZ, and I still see it happening now, and it has to stop." Which I agree, it does have to stop, there is no reason for it.

Even Yoshi-P said this game (with a person's first 50) is set up like a huge tutorial, each dungeon and class/job mission is created to use all the skills that the player is getting as they level up. Some skill's might be new to them, so the dungeon and class/job missions teache them how to use them properly. By the time they reach 50 they should know their job completely at that point, and that will make endgame and other jobs easier to understand. If this is fact, no matter what job they start out as, the process and dungeon's they take to get to 50 on their job is still part of their tutorial, according to him.

Now if their are players who were 100% perfect from day 1 to now and never had an issue, never got confused or lost, never wiped a party, never got a complaint etc... if there is such a player and they wanna be rude? Well then you're a magical being and I guess you can be. But I doubt there is one person in this game that can say that. We were once like them, and we wouldn't have wanted people to treat us like this. So why do people treat them like that?

Do unto others, as you would have done to you... because karma sucks. That is what I believe.

I'm conflicted about this. I guess in general you should have a nice attitude towards babys on their first dungeon. But the thing that causes conflict for me is being nice and trying to give advice can cause said new player to take it completely wrong... It's just like you can't win no matter what. The topic is about new people being barked at well what about helpful people being attacked for helping?

I've said it several times on these forums, that this community is one of, if not THE most hostile I've seen in years of MMO's. I used to think WoW was bad, but they've got nothing on the asshats around here.

A new player coming in now, one year after launch is like a piece of raw meat being tossed into a piranha tank.

Its only made worse because the veteran players have run every single thing in the game close to 1,000 times now, (because there's so little to do), that they can do it in their sleep, and thus have no tolerance for a new player going in for the first time who cant speedrun everything in the dungeon list.

Are there good/helpful players out there? Certainly. They just seem to be about as rare as coeurl swimsuits.

Best advice I can give.. find a group of other new players, form your own FC and help each other learn. You'll all have a lot of fun, and bond through the trial and error of learning all the things that others now take for granted.

I agree, I usually do it this way:

First if I see a new player I don't fawn and baby them, I say-

/see's that it says new player in dungeon or looks like someone doesn't know their job 100%

"Hey guys, let's do good on this~! And if you need any advice or help please let me know. I'd be glad to help you out!

/goes and does dungeon, helps if asked or if a see a mess up, give helpful advice just in general.

/other person get's on older player for wanting to help out

"Well how are they going to get better if we don't help them,or at least tell them how to better themselves? Anyway it will probably get us though faster and they will learn."

/most of the time complainer agrees and we go, I've only had maybe 2 times someone actually left and the next person coming in was helpful as well.

No matter which was you look at it, either new players getting barked at, or old players getting yelled at for helping. People are being rude to other players which is harassment, and this game is supposed to be fun. A place people can go to forget the stress of the day, not to have people yell and harass them. People just need to stop being rude to other players, period.

Even on the official website it says:

So why does it seem in a game where teamwork is important, people don't want to help one another? :(

My wife is a tank, 1st and foremost. And she refuses to run content the 1st time without people in LS/FC. She just doesn't want to be yelled at to treated badly.

On that note, she has been playing a WHM a lot more as of late because of bad treatment as a tank.

Of course. But chances are that a rude person will not be swayed by anything posted here. Some people are just plain jerks.

From the sounds of it, you don't know your rotation, know the run, and don't have a keyboard to communicate, and im guessing you didn't look up guides for the run as well? Sorry, but I really don't feel sorry for you.
