Yea that one is a head scratcher for me aswell. The armoire system just seems abandoned at this point.
Ideally, we wouldn't even stop there, but rather separate the glamour plate one in wearing from the gear itself. Rather than applying glams to pieces of gear, we'd merely slap the plate atop it.
That would mean a player holds a greater number of items, effectively, but no gear would ever need to have a separate tag for its appearance.
My understanding is that the armoire is able to do some trickery with keeping track of very specific items, but doesn't have enough memory to store everything that way.
Ultimately, it's outdated but it lets us keep *some* things without occupying dresser slots, and it's integrated enough that you can put them on plates, so it's better to have it than not.
this system is archaic, and honestly 400 more spaces will be easily filled in the first week. But you know what would help a little, as they would "spare no expense", but redoing non-functional systems is out of the question? I'll clarify with an image:

You know, I love paw boots (since originally vieras had paws and not feet, but the "spare no expense" team can't put hats on rabbits, let alone boots on paws). But to be able to use them in all classes, I need to get the same item, with the same appearance, for each one.
What's the point of having limited space to store glammours, and having class restriction on the glammour plate? If they don't have the ability to solve the storage system, they could at least let the glammour free for all classes.
Yes, absolutely agree with OP. WoW's transmog system is many times better and thats ideally what needs to happen in this game as well. Also, they need to remove glam restrictions between roles so any role can glam any piece of gear from any other role because it no longer makes any sense to restrict that (thread link in my signature as I do not intend to derail this one).
I agree, the system needs to be done completely, and an unlock collection would be the best.
But for the current system you know what the worst offender is? Accessories. They look exactly the same for every job, but due to job limitations you gotta keep a copy for each type. It's crazy.
It's also the company that said they tried to do a full glamour log and the system couldn't handle it.
Maybe they've tried a lot of things and it hasn't worked out. But the fact that they essentially built the new system over the old one without disturbing it suggests that they either won't or can't disturb some underlying part of it.
The ARR engine and netcode is bad because they lacked time because 1.0 was bad, which was because some of its design philosophy (not necessarily including webcode, and certainly not its engine) was too similar to XI, which was too similar to <pick another horribly roundabout precedent>, so really it's...
Is it too much to ask that we just look at the actual point in question, instead of conflating it with tangential relationships?
Yes, the dresser needs a massive overhaul. Adding more slots is just a band-aid fix, but still decent enough until they rework it. The issue lies in the fact that they're adding only 400 slots which isn't nearly enough.
There are all these vendors that read your progression and ability to wear / use X. Perhaps that could be brought into the armoire somehow.
Please indicate which Live Letter you're thinking about where the word 'impossible' came out of the dev team's response to a question about this.
The standard response is not "we can't do that because it's impossible". It is "we can look into it but make no promises about future features". "A mod can do it" is a poor example in any case, because the programmer has no liability whatsoever if/when the mod breaks the game in unspectacular ways.
Zepla actually brought it up in a recent video about mods. They had an UI programmer on taking questions with Yoshi and they said no to this. Whether or not the word impossible was used, I forget. :) People here love to extract words where they don't exist. :p

On one hand, correct.
On the other hand, it does show the feature can be implemented, even in a poor and shoddy manner. With proper attention and testing from people dedicated to the game, that function can be more or less implemented.
The only time I think it's absolutely... well, not "impossible" but downright improbable within a given time frame, is when the feature messes with baseline code.
Such as what people said the Glamour Dresser in Housing thing was: If you tried to edit your house's layout while someone was using the glamour dresser, the game would freak out and crash. Because instances. And again, it's not that that error would make it inherently impossible. Just that you'd have to redo some of the game's code, which goes beyond just simply adding the function in. And keep in mind, they did clean up their code back in Stormblood, so I think either we're due another major cleanup if stuff like this happens. Because given how many people want a Glamour Dresser in housing, they may want to look into implementing it in the future. And that will require all the necessarily cleanups.
Though I don't think this "a mod can do it criticism" works for everything. We know of processes and mods that are generally harmless and easy to do, and don't inherently break anything code-related. Not even quality standards, given how clipping is literally rampant on cutscenes and final bosses *cough cough* Hrothgar hairstyle mods.
On that note... I doubt people would want to expose themselves by answering this, but have there been any third party tools that massively broke the game? At least in terms of "they never patched what was causing the problem", because I guess even third party tools are allowed to be "Beta" like Character Portraits are.
I have this issue whenever I want to make a new outfit. I have to start taking stuff out of my dresser. I kind of wish more of the cash shop pieces could at least be put in the armoire or something.
Companies can sell space, but people don't have to buy it. There's a thing called restraint. also alts. For maybe 3 months out of my 3 years here, I had one additional retainer when working up all my crafting. :p
On the PC.
In spite of the actual game coding.
"Breaking the game" doesn't need to include causing raiding to fail, by the way. I've been shown examples of glamour mods that, somehow, randomly remove the hands and feet of an NPC or player.
Think of it this way ... a mod can be compared to taking a photograph of a place you enjoy going, running it through Photoshop to insert a fast food chain logo on every leaf and rock, and then showing it to someone and saying "see how easy this is to do? why can't reality be changed to match it?"
If FFXIV money as being put back into FFXIV, this prob is not be a issue anymore.
The one lesson I learned about storage: No matter how much you get, you'll always find some way to stuff it full of junk and then need more space again.
On the PC, yes.
And this is a PS3 game.
A DOWNSCALED PS3 game.
Compare graphical fidelity to that of FF13, FF14 1.0, FF15, KH3, Last of Us, Tomb Raider, NieR, Deus Ex, and so many other titles from Square Enix on the PS3.
Sure, obviously, there's the fact that this is an MMO, but let's not kid ourselves. Nothing about the game would be pushing anyone's console. And if you believe that, then you have no idea what you're talking about.
And that's on graphics alone. Coding is, indeed, a bit more complicated. What runs on a PC doesn't run on a PlayStation with the same fluidity. But that's kind of what Square does inherently, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... Your point?
No one's asking for the biggest HD nosehairs. We're not asking for a PS4 game nor a PS5 game. We're not making Lightning Returns or FF7 Remaster here. We're just adding functions and giving similar-quality stuff to an already lightened game all things considered.
Hell! Your argument doesn't even hold up anymore, and you know why? Because Square Enix themselves said they wanted to update the game's graphics! Not just the lighting, but the grass, and even the races' textures. So really, it is within their purview and capability. To better fit the newest tech. So that the game isn't just a PS3 game anymore. So again, your point?
It's an MMO and they still want to do this. They clearly can. And look at what modders do, it's REALLY not anything major. Just look at my signature for reference, IT'S STUFF ALREADY IN GAME.
It's not about need, and this is the most alt unfriendly mmo I've ever played. Only MMO where leveling an alt has genuinely felt miserable to me. In fact so much of this game's content, including cosmetics, being single character only is a huge part of me having zero desire to play an alt. I have none interest in re-grinding or paying real cash for extra copies of my favorite sets, and less interest in unlocking all the crap I've unlocked over the last seven years again. This is a total non solution.
If it's not about need, then what is it about? My solution's not the best, but it's a solution whether you like it or not. I don't care one way or another if you do it or not. I don't see the need to give grief about it.
You could sit here and mope for how ever many years, or you could satisfy this (desire / want / need / ???) faster than the team will ever implement any of these other solutions.
I'm just proactive like that, always seeking out solutions I can achieve with what's present. I actually wanted to have all the retainers for free and that's what got me started on an alt. I've found some other advantages to having one.
I keep my dresser from going too far beyond 300 and it's not a problem. I'm about ready to scrap some more items i'll probably never use.
It's about having fun in the video game I play for fun dude.
I enjoy collecting glamour and playing digital dress up with my little pixel rabbit person
And making an alt doesn't let my little pixel rabbit person store more outfits that she can wear because those are not shared resources. It does not make my storage space less limited because it's an entirely separate character with entirely separate progression, which is a massive timesink that now means I'm actively making less progress on the main I've sunk close to a decade of time into. My problem of my main character having limited capacity for glamour storage does not get solved by me playing a different character.
