A really good Discipline Priest could actually top the dps back in Mists of Pandaria while also pumping out a ridiculous amount of healing, that is what I mean with "Blizzard doesn't know either".

You can blame the various savage turns that either flat out required healer DPS to clear or at least strongly encouraged it to skip key mechanics and phases.

Then like so many other things this mentality was taken and applied to content in which it frankly didn't matter.

Na it's not diamond level stuff, healing is more about "being calm", If I need to move i'll just move to get out of the aoe then go back to casting, it works well because I'm lazy and I don't really want to move too much XD. Don't be afraid to "cancel" a cast, i'm spamming my dps spell and if I see an aoe/whatever damage coming, I'll just cancel or just wait for my cast to finish then do the heal. I can solo heal most duties up to extreme with that, but the condition is to know what your kit is doing. In savage even without having healed in shb, I could reach 6k dps as a scholar with crafted gear while still healing well on e8s with doing that. And it was way more than enough to kill the fight if you dont go for a week 1 or 2 kill. Savage looks way scarier than it actually is when you get used to it, as I said at the beginning: being a healer is about being cool headed.

As some people said, you can heal yourself in a town, see how much it does on you, and you know what it ll do in a dungeon, even if you have no idea, when the duty begin, just pop a cure2, and you compare with the tank hp, no one remember their healing for each dungeons. The confusion with the lower the hp, the highest the heal is only for essential dignity from Ast, other than this one, you can heal yourself while full hp in your house and it's the same as being low hp!

if my cure 2 (700 potency) does 28 000 heal, then I know medica/rapture(it's the same skill, just no mana) will do half of that +-. Then you have to learn once (as any roles having one of them) that a regen/dot ticks every 3 seconds and you get how much your regen skills do (approximative):
Medica 2 is an aoe cure2 (200 + 500 from the regen)
Asylum is 800 + 80 potency from the asylum effect.
And you can see, everything is more or less at the level of a cure 1 or at the level of a cure 2. Ast and scholar have basically the same potencies, just with twist like cards or aetherflow, your learn it once in a few minutes like I just explained and you know them all, that's why people are often saying "they are all the same"".

The high level diamond league things are more people planning everything to the exact heal in advance, never cancel because of it and you need to have a co heal you know well for it, it's mostly for ultimates or very high logs which I cba, so dw about that, I dont find it fun either.

Yes OP!

If anything the current situation makes it more likely for healers to not heal. Why? Because it's so easy to tunnel vision when you're in long periods of monotony. I've heard it a few times in ShB "oops, I forgot I was a healer for a second there" and I've done it.

And people complain about "healers who don't heal" more than ever.

I feel like we do need to end this myth too that its DPS abilities that are to blame.


Ultimately the changes I'd like to see is:
- Improved downtime variety (most likely in the form of DPS because that's the simplest solution without raising the skill floor)
- Reduced downtime on new content


Unfortunately the complaint is unavoidable without a massive overhaul of the game's design. Why? Because of how the game and its encounters are designed. It is designed to value rDPS the most. Everything else is just there to facilitate that. There is nothing in the game's mechanics that would benefit from other priorities. How enemies are defeated boils more down to mechanics that any specific way jobs can interact with the foe beyond dealing damage. And then you have enrage timers and DPS checks that require people to maximise DPS.

So there is going to be a mentality that: all roles should DPS. And that those trying to be the best at their role with have to try to maximise their DPS. And because encounters are scripted? That gives a lot more room for healers to optimise their healing to a point where making mistakes can result in death and damage income is infrequent enough to let your DPS classes in the party sit at low health for longer.

I feel like we should just accept this is the reality of this type of game and that regardless of how they design healers this is going to be an issue and we can at least make healers more interesting.

It’s funny how casual elitism makes these become a actually thing. When actually bad player tell you too play the “best” composition you know it’s bad. It’s pretty ironic. Like you never ever need Heal dps in 99 % ( but if you don’t do dmg you actually could actually go semi afk be a there isn’t anything happening) of the content anyway and the very specific 1 % only if you actually got for week 1 and ultimates before that point I’m pretty sure you can clear fights as healer just by using medica 2.

Wow. This feels like the SMN thread I just left. I don't think jobs are being simplified or streamlined because the devs think we are stupid. FFXIV is pretty unique in that one character can learn any job in the game. In a lot of other MMO, you're stuck at one job and you have to make a totally new character if you want to learn another. I myself am almost omni with DoW/DoM jobs and I can honestly say I can only play about 4/5 of them in a way that doesn't make me feel like I'm being carried. Do I have a basic grasp of the other jobs? Certainly. But inspect anyone and you'll usually see multiple jobs on that list. For those who have mastered (truly mastered) them all, kudos. But the reality is, a lot of people pick up multiple jobs but really only master one or two and I think this simplification is a way to make using multiple jobs easier across the board. That's the trend I'm noticing here, anyway.

I wish healers had a little more individuality but since all we care about is damage, I don't see that happening really. It amazes me when I see people talking about how boring or easy things have gotten but also complain about how bad the playerbase is. Trying healing in a trash pug group. Duty Finder after 9 pm basically becomes Pug Savage Finder. XD

Huh? Glimmer of Light still exists. It’s a talent instead.

And in WoW, the healer DPS was problematic because people would be turned down if you were the wrong class. Something Yoshi-P is very focused on preventing. Homogenization sucks, but it really helps to attain that balance.

I think the only two ways is either to change encounter designs or change healer to a support philosophy.

I’m not big on giving healers more complex DPS. I’m also not a big fan of making healing more stressful. And certain heal mechanics that other MMOs use would become unbalanced because of WHM Benediction.

I am a big fan of increasing the utility methods of healers so that they can contribute to the team without stepping too far on the DPS territory. Though arguably, adding a “utility rotation, why not just add a DPS rotation?

Playstyle should vary. There should be healers that bring more pDPS (Sage?), healers that bring more rDPS(AST etc.) and healers with more utilities which translates to DPS. We shouldn't tunnel vision into only one variation.

Depends on how much they vary. The current 3 healers all vary in terms of playstyle, but they are relatively balanced. Despite WHM could use a bit more window.

That can be countered through content design with more thought put into it from a healing perspective. Midas (perhaps accidentally) pulled this off with WHM having some clear benefits over AST despite being numerically inferior.

Even if it boiled down to one healer being clearly the safer hand for progression with the other leading the way in farms, it all works out. It's only really an issue when one is just flat out superior to the other irrespective of the content at hand.

The main reason people wanted Holy Paladin (in Shadowlands at least) was Venthyr specific (ie. Hallowed Ground). A long CD AoE burst that was universally usable in M+ regardless of the weekly affix (seeing as it's AoE centric, only having to differentiate between either harder bosses or harder trash). Either way, having access to a massive AoE overtime burst (which heals people inside for good measure) was obnoxiously strong. I believe it was meant to be nerfed/reworked, but I haven't seen it if so (given I quit some time before the lawsuit shenanigans happened). Some would still desire Holy Paladin if they weren't Venthyr at all but to a much lesser level.

By comparison, simply spamming Chain Lightning on a geared Resto Shaman -- mine of which was also Venthry with Chain Harvest, which almost immediately puts you top of the chart as soon as it's used -- will be keeping up pretty well with DPS for as long as this is possible to maintain, but as said, the presence of sporadic and completely chaotic damage (and just more damage-intake across the board overall), means you are always more inclined to drop this the moment healing is needed, and this happens more often than not -- compared to the more methodical dance of FFXIV, where you can literally tell exactly when damage is going to happen, how much, what type, etc, to a point of being ridiculously preemptive.

Even when you can time mechanics with the likes of DBM in WoW, the intake is still generally higher, people are still prone to moments of seemingly random spikes, and when trying to time higher keys without access to infinite res-spam (even with a full team of Druids or DK's), you really can't risk just letting people die for the sake of Healer damage, even if said damage is very respectable.

Not a "much" lesser level, at least until very high keys. I think you underestimate their natural potency and utility.

Even excluding covenant skill damage, H-Pal would commonly more than double the next-best spec's damage (heck, the gap would actually grow between it and Resto Druid, since virtually all its damage outside of mere Sunfires would come from Owlvoke burst). Heck, even after its receiving multiple waves of nerfs and some competing healers getting damage buffs it still rolls over any other healer's damage, again, simply because that damage is included as something so integral to the spec.

It's never a surprise to me when I compete or even beat damage dealers as Resto Shaman during M+ whenever freedom allowed me to, but yes, its damage not being an integral part of its healing (eg. I don't generate Holy Power with damage and use it for instant heals -- literally having to long-cast anything that isn't Riptide spam, all of which ceases damage) is certainly a factor. As for Hallowed Ground -- of which I used extensively on my Prot Paladin -- I'm very aware of how potent it was, but the last I heard was it was having its CD shortened and potencies lowered, but I had quit before any real changes were made, then the lawsuit, then the ripcord, and now its in the "bowl of fruit" era with all kinds of random jank, so I'm pretty much out of the loop.

Here in FFXIV, I certainly do pine for more intake to heal and/or a more involved damage rotation, but I also have no problem just mashing Glare/Holy on repeat either. I guess I enjoy the contrast compared to my time spent elsewhere, where you literally do become the HP-Bar monitor and have to fret over them dropping quite randomly. I love all that too, and pushing 20 keys in M+ was literally the only reason I stayed after the "shiny and new" veneer faded from Shadowlands. Seems we're getting Glare 2, Holy 2, a Fluid Aura replacement (probably becoming the 'every healer gets a single-target buff' button), and a watery heart-like totem of some description.

As always, I reserve judgement until I get all the changes in my hands and can play it for myself, but it's safe to assume it won't be any more or less how it is now. Given I mained Priest from TBC to BoA in WoW, including a lot of Disc, I wager I'll enjoy Sage, but we'll have to wait and see if it'll coax me away from WHM, which I've mained since Heavensward.

Not true; almost every meta has still had several competing options, especially if one allows for more than a fleeting moment's worth of thought.

Moreover, condensing to certain norms at a particular given level of play in a particular region, so long as that constrained space is still reasonably large, isn't necessarily (or even typically) a sign of things not working.

I didn't actually know that there used to be a freaking Blizzard II option for Scholar though; that's pretty wacky. Art of War is definitely more unique now in terms of job identity for that one particular type of attack, but it was pretty amusing to see that the class had some spells in common with Black Mage of all things.

Blizzard II used to be part of the Cross Class system since SCH took actions from Tham and Conjurer.

And, Art of War really isn't that unique. It's just recolored Aura Blast from PvP. StB SCH was allowed to have Miasma II because the Cross Role system broke SCH in a bad way when it came to AoE filler. But, when we started using it as a DPS gain to weave, oooooh no, SE couldn't have that.

Art of War is 200% a downgrade from the things we've had in the past.

I thought the reason they didn't want to add more dps spells to healers was because players who only wanted to heal would feel pressured to dps by the community. As much as I would like more abilities to use while questing and doing the MSQ, I think what healers really want is something to do during downtime and it doesn't necessarily have to be a dps rotation. In fact I think the whole reason we are getting sage is because the design team misinterpreted why people kept asking for more dps abilities. Not every healer wants to play a pseudo dps. I'd say they just don't want to be bored pressing 111111 while other players get to have interesting gameplay.

I agree with this. In one interview, Yoshi mentioned that they thought the healing community wanted more opportunities to DPS so they made sage with that in mind, but they completely missed the point because it still has the same 1 button DPS spam that all the other healers have.

I think it's possible to have both worlds in one cupcake here - additional DPS options / rotations / combinations / procs could be added so that healers who are more comfortable with the healing have that option to push themselves a little further.

We also need a new word other than meta, because it's been stolen by Facebook...any ideas?

Pre-Cast Medica 2 as the cast bar gets to roughly the V in Relativity.
Glare/Dia, depending on if I need to refresh DoT > PI > Cure 3 > PoM > Glare > Rapture > Thin Air + Asylum > Medica > Swiftcast > Medica 2 > Assize > Glare > Glare > Cure 3 > Medica > Cure 3 > Glare > Cure 3 > Rapture > Glare spam until clear or enrage.

its amazing how people think that during a run where you rarely heal most of the time so you are stuck pressing 1 button that don't interact to anything in your kit over over again is so stimulating for the brain making that it make the healer forget that he is one cause he is focusing on his dps and they simply not think its because he fell asleep during the run because he waited so long for the tank to actually get damage that require healing so he can press more then 1 button, that he nearly became a skeleton meme at that point.

The new 1.5s Cast time is such a double-edged sword.

Yes, it is undeniably a QoL improvement. It is now easier to weave your oGCD abilities into your Nuke button. WHM and SCH rejoice, they no longer have to annoyingly clip their GCD to weave into their nuke.

But that's the thing, before, they had to create that weaving space by utilizing a different spell to their nuke. Any instant spell. Be it Dia, a lilly spell, Ruin II, Biolysis etc.

It almost always came to a DPS loss, or clipping the DoT which felt awful and was innefficient. But it was a short but welcome (and gameplay-involved) respite in the 1111 spam.

Now, with Endwalker those problems are gone. The nuke spam will have no reason to cease. SCH will use Broil more than ever. And the awful and mindnumbingly boring rotation will become even more apparent.

Exactly. This is a change that should've happened in a Shadowbringers patch too, it shouldn't be some "big" expansion change. It's also not going to make spamming Glare/Broil "feel good" or anything, it'll just highlight the monotony of it even more because now instead of our characters doing something for 2.41s, they'll be doing it for 1.5 and then just standing there for that .9s waiting to do it again! I'm excited to think about all the dancing, admiring the scenery, or chatting in linkshells I'll now be able to fit in with all the new found free time. God knows we needed more of it.

I am dumb and cant figure out in my head when i need to heal okay? No matter how good you are at the game you can only keep track of so many things at once, that is just how the human brain works, so even simple choices like should i broil or adlo here which only take a split second is still a distraction and can make you mess up. And if the healer messes up then the whole party wipes which is no good. They should just remove glare/broil/malefic altogether and give that damage to dps and tanks instead. I don't understand what is so bad if we didn't have dps spells and could just focus purely on healing instead. Imagine if you could just stand and watch and focus purely on healing when people are going to take damage, you would never be able to mess up. I think that would be a lot better

Then how do you suggest that healers get through MSQ instances and quests while they level up? Beat the mobs to death with auto attacks for over an hour? Healers will ALWAYS have a need for damage spells, "pure" healing should never and will never be a thing.

I didn't really think of that but they can just make healing spells deal damage to non-bosses. Or make mobs die more easily to healers, like they already give tanks and healers more damage in story duties.

I'm honestly curious as to how these supposed Sylphies feel good about the current healing model, especially if they refuse to deal damage out of weird principle.

Do they, like, maintain 100% uptime on Medica II/Succor/Asp. Helios, Cure/Physick/Benefic the tank for every auto attack they take and then pat themselves on the back for a job well done? Is that kind of woefully boring gameplay where one ignores 95% of the toolkit, truly exciting for the seemingly average person, if developer statements are to be believed?

Because as much as we can rag on Glarefic and Brosis spam (or Glareficoilosis) for being boring as sin, spamming one nuke and using your oGCDS still sounds far more engaging than exclusively using Medica II and Cure I. With the very occasional Cure II, of course - blessed is YoshiP in his divine wisdom for allowing Freecure to survive all these years.

Am I just wired wrong in my brain? :p
