A serious discussion about abridging the story quest 1-50 (discouraging new players)

Once again, say it with me:

"Just because you don't like one aspect of the game it doesn't mean you don't like the game in its entirety"

There are probably hundreds of people who play this game and probably care even less than I do about the story, while enjoy other aspects of it and keep playing for that reason alone even if the story it's the main purpose

With FFXIV, I like the game because of its glamour system, the dungeons, the classes and overall the character models in their details: does it mean that the fact that I don't like one aspect of the game makes me dislike it all?

If that was true I wouldn't be here talking about it.

Why is content being gated behind story important?

Furthermore, what's the difference, if you went ahead and did all of the story quest in the order it was given to you anyway?

Is there a difference if you force yourself to get up at 7 in the morning and eat a diet of nothing but lettuce and fish, or if you have a personal trainer and dietician who does the same thing for you?

And for the record, quests would still generally follow the same path they do now where you need to do one before another pops up, except major points in the game where quest gates exist would no longer exist.

If you hit 50, you can walk into Inshard. Simple as that. If you want to do the story quest up until that point, sure, you'd have to go back and pick it up where you left it off.

You said don't compare, then did so yourself. I'm not arguing with you, just pointing out that it was a little silly to say one thing and then do the opposite yourself.

Adding my voice -- this is badly needed. The storyline is exhausting and not enjoyable. It is too diluted and bloated with meaningless quests and dialogue. I'm interested in the story, but I feel forced to skip most of it for my sanity.
My suggestions:
1) Limit dialog length to set standards, based on how important and interesting it is.
Example:
-- Irrelevant side quests: 5-10 dialog boxes long.
-- Main story, minor significance: 10-20 dialog boxes long.
-- Main story, major significance: 1-4 minutes.

2) Keep everything either meaningful or entertaining. If it's neither, cut aggressively.

3) The laborious dialog is neither impressive nor entertaining. Focus on story and characters, not meaningless eloquence.

4) Make past storylines modular, not linear. Provide a material incentive to completing them, but don’t make them required.

Believe me – a story that is 60% shorter will be much more memorable than what’s currently in the game.

And it will get much much much worse in 3.0, like MUCH worse, the amount of "gating content" there is so in your face. Everyone here should instead asking "PLEASE STOP gating QUEST, EXPLORATION and FLYING ABILTY" behind main story quest in 3.0. Because this is exactly what they did. If you skip MSQ in 3.0 - which some players may decide to do just that and go explore. You will find out, you cannot go much anywhere and there is not much to do because all those quests will not be unlocked until you progress through the main story. Some quests are chain quest, so you only see a bit of the initial quests.

Which brings me to this: if any players who hate doing MSQ in the 2.0-2.55, arriving in 3.0 expecting a better shorter MSQ and no more tedious fetch quest, they will be in for a shock. This is a quest and MSQ based game, at least you must go through it once. Even then, all the daily stuffs are basically amount to "more quests of go kill X mobs somewhere, fetch me things, escort NPCs". So if questing and MSQ is not your thing, you just gotta bite the bullet, once, and then they will set you free to do whatever you want.

You've been beating this drum for like 10 pages now and, even though we've pointed out why you're wrong, you go right on beating it...

For starters, no, 3.0's story quest has NO WHERE NEAR the amount of pointless fetch questing that the MSQ until 50 had. Everything I do is generally important. The worst offender is when my team all split up to gather items for the Gnath while I went and killed some monsters to get their meat. Meanwhile, the other members did their own thing and gathered their own items that were necessary.

In 2.5, they would've made the player do ALL OF THAT...

Second, the problem with the 50 MSQ is that you CANNOT get any help while doing it, except for the instanced content. I can't help my friend run from one end of a zone to the other, just to mash through some dialogue about collecting tea leaves or some other pointless bullshit.

If I could somehow DO this for my friends, I would, but I can't, not unless I borrow their login and grind through that shit for them (which SE expressly forbids in the ToS, FYI).

Please, PLEASE, PLEASE at least come up with a new argument or something.

He wants everyone to be forced to play it a certain way - that, or he would not have the self control to proceed through all the story he says he loves so much if it weren't gated... This ll reminds me of the recent flying should not be in game/yes it should debate in WoW..some people just don't want others to have options.

what dont u get I PLAY THIS GAME BECAUSE STORY GATES STUFF...ie i enjoy having to to do everything to get access to x instance if it give me access without doing everything it defaets the damm purpose of gating it in the 1st place


by the logic u going lvl is another type of gate might as well give as a lvl60 boost so, my firend can all be at lvl60 with and so we dont have to do lvling and just do raids

For players who HATE MSQ, it does not matter, you can argue 3.0 is better (it's more of the same thing, bigger, longer, uncut, etc...) but for those players, being forced to do ANY MSQ to access contents is no bueno. To conclude, THIS IS NOT THAT KIND OF GAME. So if I have a friend who wants purely ACTION multiplayer aspect, ASAP NOW! I would not bring them here. There are other games like this. ESO would be right for them. Destiny is perfect for them. FF14 is not for them, it is STORY driven game, and you have no options of skipping the "single player with online component" aspect of FF14. It is there for training wheels - and every new players have to do it. They also could use the free xp to level 50 with minimum effort, it is for those who love solo play FF lore and story - which is what the FF series is known for.

I cannot bring myself telling someone who hate MSQ type of game to go buy 3.0 because it is better, because it is NOT. These players will have buyer's remorse because the minute they set foot in Ishgard, they have to do MSQ, not optional. The producer already stated for expansion 4 and up, they will consider changing this strict requirement because by then it could be overwhelming, they may make season 1-3 somewhat optional. But for now, we all have to bite the bullet. Think of it this way in a more positive spin, once you are done, you are DONE. SE will set you free to do "grinding as you see fit" and you no longer have to keep redoing MSQ over and over for every class + jobs. Unlike WoW, every new character - going through the same thing again, and again and again - but that is how WoW is designed.

I've been playing through the HW MSQ with my fiancee and finding it lots of fun, just as I did with the MSQ from 50. If I had to do this alone, yeah, probably wouldn't enjoy it as much, but 3.0 cut way back on the fetchy parts of the MSQ.

I know you've been saying it's the same (because it suits what you think is an argument), but it's nowhere near as bad as the 350+ quest slog at 50.

And yeah, I can only see making the MSQ non-mandatory as a good thing.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill and aren't even reading peoples responses before you get offended by them.

Point 1. If someone does not like the storyline, this not the right game for them. I do not see how you forcing your friends to play it just for you makes this okay. There is no other way to intrepret this. If you have 7 friends playing a board game, you all agree on the rules at the start, because you all start at equal footing. So even people who have played the game before have to do all the beginner cruft. That is what you should be doing.

Point 2. All Final Fantasy games are like this, but they are not the worst offender for "overbearingly long cutscenes"... that belongs to Xenosaga. JRPG's are known for two generally annoying traits by western standards - Extremely long cutscenes, and extremely grindy progression (albeit the random pointless battle.) Western RPG's have their own annoyances, while they are generally too easy by JRPG standards, you end up spending a lot of time repeating things because the quests are all bottles.

As for the Gay Marriage analogy... you fail to understand what the Gay Marriage fight is about. Everyone deserves equal treatment and consideration under the law. That is more consistent with not allowing any kind of MSQ skipping. Who does it harm if someone gets married? Nobody else that's already married. But if you don't have the patience to find a spouse that doesn't entitle you to marriage benefits.

The developers chose to make the content in HW locked behind the MSQ. Presumably they have their reasons. We can speculate and argue about what those reasons might be and whether they're sensible reasons or not, but really that's all it is; us speculating and/or arguing.

Personally I love the story and never really found any of the story quests that annoying. But I'm a lore addict so yeah ... If SE had chosen to make finishing 2.x optional, it wouldn't bother me. As long as people realised that, if they chose NOT to do 2.x story - as the poster who isn't interested in being the Warrior of Light would wish to choose - they won't be able to access most of the areas beyond Ishgard, most of the post-50 dungeons, primals and EX primals, the NPCs where they can spend their new Tomestones, flying and ... well ... most of the game's content. Because it's all gated by the Heavensward story which is gated by ARR's story.

By all means make the story optional. It was in 2.x if you didn't want to unlock stuff and just craft and RP. I have absolutely no idea why you'd choose to play that way, but that's not for me to decide.

And that is the BIG DIFFERENCE, you LOVE doing it, even if some of the MSQ could use a trim or two (or making them completely optional - which they will do in expansion 4). If your friends HATE doing MSQ - I have a few who all they did is skipping the CS every single one of them - they will be completely annoyed by 3.0, since it is even more restrictive than 2.0. For others who just want to craft and gathers, this revelation hits them the hardest, they must do MSQ to a point, where all areas are unlocked for them. They do not have to do this at 2.0, they can just gather everywhere and craft to 50 without touching the MSQ. Obviously they would do up to where they can get chocobo, which is tied to MSQ - but at least all areas are unlocked - which is not the case with 3.0.

I could use that analogy of FF14 is Mac/iOS, a completely curated experience, gated everywhere, and you are force to play by its rule. This is pretty much the staple rule of JRPG, and FF story structure in all of their games (with FF13 being the worst offender). While other games, is Android/PC, go explore everywhere, do what you want how you want it - similar how western RPG is structured like Skyrim and GTA series. I do not like western RPG, I want more curated experience, and for players who want open ended world so they can go everywhere and play how they see fit, THIS IS NOT FOR THEM, at least the first half of the game experience follow the strict rule of JRPG. Also another reason why I will not be playing in NA/EU server ever again, I want to play with players who understand their roles and play in a group situation, as well as having the ability to read what your rotation hot bar action means, and can read messages on the screen "telling you this is what you should be doing".

with the amount of MMOs out here its bound ppl will find their prefer one....the age when it was either WoW or the highway is long gone..im glad SE is sticking to their guns (even if i dont like some of their decisions)...this game doesnt 10mil sub or any MMO for that matter.it needs 500k-1mil dedicated fans and it should be fine

I am NOT a warrior of light, end of argument and discussion. Any story SE makes for MY character is null and VOID as I have stated before.

This character has a fully written 10 page backstory that I myself wrote for him when I started this game up again in march. I recently added another 5 pages last night to his story which includes HW and what he is doing now and WHY he is doing it. He is My character. He makes his own story as he goes along in this VIRTUAL WORLD with his wife.

I have finished the MSQ and am doing it in HW and am SKIPPING EVERY! I am not reading one ounce of txt or watching any cut scene in this game as I make my story, NO ONE ELSE DOES! I am not a warrior of light. I am Bathu'ra Lihzeh, High protector and husband to Keraada Lihzeh. Destroyer of Primals.

My character does what he does to Protect his wife and to make himself more powerful and get better equipment so he will better be able to do his duty at protecting her. He does NOT care about anything or anyone else else. He is a ninja and a husband, thats all and that is what he wants.

I do not like the story being required. It's a cruddy movie that takes 20 hours to watch before you can do whatever you want. In FFXI, you might not be able to raid without some story, but there were relevant things ou could do. Grind gil, grind EXP, that kinda stuff. I just returned, and I am dreading the dumb story.

I spent 7 years writing a whole story myself in Ultima Online :)

I have spent the last 20 years making storys for different characters in Dungeons and Dragons, your point?

This is how I play. I make my own story and skip all the bullcrap that SE has been spewing at me end of story for me. I will continue to play with my wife and we will have fun raiding and doing dungeons.

Wow does not gate their expansion by any stupid MSQ. It is gated by a level cap which is enough of a gate. Hell I cant even make a new toon to play becase I am not going through that MSQ crapfest again just to have a lalafell race. I want to have this toon and a lalafell but I am stuck CHOOSING one because SE made this stupid decision.

I think a lot of players here misunderstood this expansion, they were expecting something like Destiny "House of Wolves" or upcoming Taken King. $40 worth of a mere 5 hours of "story" at best. Or another Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Skyrim etc... do what you want to do ASAP NOW. At least once you go through the MSQ, you are free to do anything you see fit, aka "grind your XP till you are blue in the face".

didnt say ur wrong....im basicly the opposite i love emercing myslef in the current world i am and follow said story and see how it goes, if i can make decision i make from a light rp stance depending how the conv goes

also even if have ur own story that mean "your story" gates stuff, in a way, since your story grows parallel to SE one, so im assuming u do the quests for different reason that the npcs wanted for you etc....it doesnt mean u skip the story per se just u following ur own...or im assuming it does,not the into that deep rp

Yes, I SAID that in the post I made the comparison in, but the arguments against gay marriage and gating the story are IDENTICAL.

The only argument against it that anyone has put forth has been "I don't like it", with a few bits thrown in about how it "ruins" the story, when it doesn't actually change the story at all.

It is possible to have a story in a game, yet people will still PLAY that game without liking the story one bit.

erm exept from the Zam interview, where YoshiP clearly states that FFXIV is that way and it will be that way till 4.0 where they might at shortcuts to older story and Season 1 is ARR so u cant skip it to move in HW which is HW cuse the team want u to know whats going, if u want to skip the cutscenes etc ie fast forward (which i think u misunderstand to mean optional story rather than make it easier to go trough the story) that up the player as an individual

ps: never said if ppl dont like the story they should go play something else i said if the ppl dont like the fact that story gates content they should go play something....i know a lot of ppl that have just skip every single cutscene for abc reason...havent heard complain that it gates stuff beacuse their goal is beyond that and have no problem to spend 1h to get there and they understand that this is how the game works

Funny I don't know what is going on at all. I have been esc mashing to get this crap done. Guess I am a failure to the SE team LOL. They should have made this a single player rpg if they wanted the story and gating to matter that much. If it were I would care about the story as this would not be an MMO and it would not be my character I created.

lastly, It should be my choice to do the story or not. Just because it has a story which is only ONE aspect of this game, there are many others that are enjoyable to me and many others who play for those OTHER features and could give a crap about the story.

I would rather fate grind my way to 60 instead of this MSQ crap because to me, THAT is fun, not this solo mission crap. That defeats the whole purpose of an mmorpg.

You can do just that, skip ALL CS to level cap and get it done once ASAP, so you can do mindless FATE grind and continue to roleplay. Everyone has to go through the MSQ once then they are free to do what they want. It's great when you level alt, since you know what to do, and all those MSQ are nothing but "activities" that gives boatload of XP, not worse than spamming buttons on FATEs.

i have to say im suprised that ppl have issue with MSQ gate everything since it has been that way since 2.0-2.55 and it was clear that was the direction the game had from then and also stated long ago that HW would have required 2.55 to access

how you have not either complain about it when u got the game or heard about HW but now decided it should be optional its beyond me (or at least complain about it in this vocal manner)

but jobs arent just gated by lvl combination, you also need to be to certain point in story to have access them (granted not as much as need for the new ones)..so needing to do story for job isnt exacly new

Think about it this way, from the way the game naturally progresses you. You start as your class. You are "gated" on changing classes until you make a certain amount of progress. Afterwards, you are free to change your class to any class you unlock. You are then "gated" on jobs, based on your class level combinations. You can play any job you have the right levels for...

Unless you want one of the new jobs. Then you need to beat all of 2.0 - 2.55, get 50, get geared, get to Isghard, and unlock the new classes. There's a pretty wide gap between what is required to unlock PLD and what is required to unlock DRK.

EDIT -

It isn't about whether "some" story gating is new or not, it's about the quantity of story required. I even stated in my example that yes, this is a requirement for other jobs, but not to this extent.

Then maybe he'll change his mind when he sees the 65 likes the OP has.

He acknowledges that people are skipping the story via mashing esc anyway. If they understand that people are actually quiting the game from boredom, maybe they'll step up the timetable a bit.

It shouldn't really be surprising.

People who have been away from the game for years probably aren't watching the lodestone for info about stuff like that (why would they be?).

In many of the cases that were mentioned in this thread, these are people who were asked to come back by a friend who cautiously accepted the offer.

Like I said, you never know why someone will play an MMO, but you should take the sub money either way. ;)

You know SE specializes in single player RPGs right? You know that is what the Final Fantasy series is, right? Storytelling in video game format?

Just because they decided to MMO-ize one of their stories doesn't mean they have no business doing it. It's what makes them unique and different in the realm of MMOs. If you want minimal story and all battles, you should find another game.

Now put packing peanuts into that cake to make it bigger and more full and appearing to have a lot more chocolate in it. You wouldn't want to eat the packing peanuts. In fact I doubt you would buy a cake if you knew that 50% of it was packing peanuts. Almost assuredly you wouldn't eat the whole thing.
