It's no more complicated than what I see happen with every single Garuda HM. >_>

That is, the OT grabs Red, whoever has the highest dps (often a BRD due to range) gets green, DPS burns green, burns red, switches back to Garuda. Only real difference is what corner you go to.

The other thing to keep in mind, is all sorts of different content is Duty Finderable:

And there is a big difference between 'winging it' on a Guildheist vs. 'winging it' on EX Primals.

Guildheists were designed to be done with strangers...in a PuG, and the instructions, believe it or not, are given to you by the gosh darn game. Which is frightening when you consider how many times I've done these with groups and asked (especially on the less common to get ones) 'everyone know what to do?' And people are still, ignoring flames/bubbles or popping purples, not killing the mobs at the same time, killing the damn turtle ....etc. But still, usually even the most dis-jointed team can salvage these pretty easily.

The same is true of most storyline dungeons/trials etc. Sure, party members might hit a snag/ wipe a little here and there, but it's typically no biggie and people still get their clears and experiences within the time allowed . But again, SE more or less expected this content to be PuG'd, and therefore they tried to make it interesting w/ some challenges here and there but overall, pretty easy for a 4 man team....potentially even a team that can't communicate with each other well due to language differences etc, still come out victorious their first run (a wipe or 2 not withstanding).

But once you finish the main storyline, all of that changes. SE now is writing much of the content to be done by set groups. So now there's an expectation of teamwork, and group unity. Which is no biggie. Any 8-man static that keeps chipping away at the content HM Primals/Binding Coil 1 and up, is going to beat it...master it, and be able to farm it. It might take them some time (like hours/days)....and multiple wipes, but of course, a dedicated team that plays their endgame content together will be able to clear everything in game without looking up a strategy.

Here's the thing though: Duty Finder....and even Party Finder is NOT a dedicated team/group. And so, in order to make sure that these types of PuG parties have a strong chance of being successful in the time allotted for that duty, having some pre-knowledge of the battle and it's mechanics replaces the need for team synergy + time and practice you would gain from doing the content in a 'Static 8man'. Also, because you're now relying on 7 other people to 'do their job', it is more or less expected people follow the 'conventional' battle plan...which means once again, it's good to make sure you know what that is beforehand. Now where you gain this knowledge is up to you. You can read a guide, watch a video, talk to a friend, practice with your FC, learn it in a static etc....but once you start queuing for 90% of most 'endgame' DF queues, you should know the basics of the battle.

Going in blind just means you expect the 7 other people who know the battle to teach you/or worse, carry you though it. That is an unrealistic expectation....and something to be honest, depending on the fight, would probably cost you 200-500K on my server to get from a willing group. (IE pay for your Titan HM win). And while I think charging people/paying people for a win is both shady and sad, at least when people buy their wins, both sides aren't lying about what happened. You paid them for their skill and knowledge, you got the win you wanted....no reading required.

Now, DF/PF still doesn't really solve all your content clearing woes...because really EX Primals, and Turns 5+ are still easiest and most reliably done by set statics and groups that know each other and their playstyles. Now sure, all of this content can be 'farrmed' by folk who've already cleared it multiple times, and those folk can typically easily PuG it with 7 other people who also have it on farm. But most of these battles have very unforgiving mechanics that typically can't be worked out in a single 'session' by a true DF pug group. (meaning you'd time out before you could figure out T5 start -finish with your average PuG if no one had any pre-knowledge of the fight). Also, as the majority of the community currently does NOT have this content cleared, let alone 'on farm', it is fairly impossible to DF this content and expect a win. This is why currently DF for this specific content is used for practice often without people losing their minds with you....



SO that's one problem....all content is NOT created equal. No one really cares if you queue for Haukke Manor Story and have no idea what to expect....people do expect if you're a tank and you queue for Garuda HM, you at least know the basic 'hold her here...then here' pattern and/or if OT 'grab this sister and hold it here' stuff. So the 'research first' thing really is content specific...

But there's a bigger problem with 'I don't need to research'

Everyone on the side of 'I don't need to study for a video game' has done a good job saying 'I am entitled to play how I want' and has not thought much about 'well what if everyone played that way all the time'.

How frustrated would you get if every time, you queued for your 'Trial' Roulette, you got 7 other people who had no idea what to do in the fight....and who not only that, 'wanted to learn as we go'/'experience it ourselves'? How patient could you be every time? Even if you didn't mind spending an hour wiping out, with maybe only a 40-60% chance of success at the end of an hour, how often would you now queue for trials in your DF? How much of your game play time would that eat up, if you spent an hour in one Trial Roulette every night? Would you still have time for other game activities you enjoy, or do you count on that queue not really taking more than 15-20 minutes tops? How frustrated would you be if you, spent an hour learning the mechanics in the first group and didn't clear, but now timed out and needed to re-start from scratch with a second group....again with 7 people who had no idea how to do the fight and wanted no input? How much of this could you take until you'd just want to win?

Or Crystal Tower w/ 23 other people who 'want to learn on our own'
Or Turn 4+?
Or Garuda EX?

You sooner or later would just be like 'Screw it, I'm not going to waste my time anymore.' ....only grouping with friends/FC mates etc. Which means, the DF/PF would be even less efficient and practical than it is now.


So the problem is, if MORE players thought like you, and didn't research, practice with friends, queue for content they have on Farm via DF, then you wouldn't have people to go 'learn' with because their frustrations with either 'DF groups wipe too much/take too long to clear simple things/I waste too much time and might not get the clear' will outweigh their desire for the daily bonuses/random PuG. Better to go do something else with their time.

Which brings it back to which is more selfish, my expectation that you as an adult take some personal responsibility and don't waste my time on this content ...or you believing I (and 7 other people) should either (for free) spend my time and energy teaching you a stranger I don't know the knowledge I have, or be patient and let you 'figure it out' as you go...or worse, have 7 strangers for free, do your work for you?

There's just no point in this discussion anymore. It's a simple case of preaching to the choir on both sides. Those who prefer to research content and see it as you do will do it while those who prefer to experience it first hand through the DF will continue doing so. In truth, both sides will never meet for any content with multitudes of mechanics such as T5 as you have mentioned. Those who really wish to clear such content will go ahead and start a PF while filtering out players who are from the other camp. Sooner or later, the 2 camps will be divided and everyone can be happy. It's simply a matter of "when will I find a static group to do content with".

I really don't see any point in changing the mindsets of the other camp, that's just how they want to experience the game, the ones who don't wish to see that happening, can start looking for people and start making friends with similar mindsets to do content with. If people choose to continuously use the DF for such content while not doing anything to fix the "issue" themselves, what hope have they of making the other camp change their way of playing?

tl;dr If you're sick and tired of people with different views and playstyles of your own, stop using the DF and start forming your own group of players who share your views and playstyles.

Couldn't agree more with the OP. One of the reasons I play MMOs is the "joy" of working together with other players to overcome obstacles. Part of that is inquiring for advice/tips/info on any encounters your party members may have.

At work, if a coworker asks me a question about something I know, I don't go, "Here, take this book and find the answer yourself... or... hey, go to youtube and watch the video you <expletive>!" That'd get me fired as that sort of behavior would illustrate my INABILITY to work with others.

There is a poor sense of camaraderie and compassion amongst MMO players, and it only seems to be getting worse with each new game.

Just the other day, I was fussing with my mouse and was unable to get a group heal off after 2 DPS' got hit by AOE and inevitably died. One of DPS gave me some snippy comments and then preceded to take as much dmg from all sorts of AOE throughout the rest of the dungeon run as possible.

Here's the big problem. Assuming it's an endgame raid, not watching a video or reading a guide isn't a coworker asking a question. It's the coworker calling you asking you to punch them in and asking you how to turn the ignition in their car. Meanwhile it's already 30 mins after the shift started. I haven't reached endgame in this game yet but come on, having a clue and not wasting the 7 thru what 23 other peoples time is just common courtesy. I watch a video before doing leveling content dungeons because I'm not rude.

You said that it's a game, not real life. But because of what this thread is about, the comparison is perfectly valid. You then chose to compare risking your life to risking your character's life, which has nothing to do with the subject. It's an entirely different comparison.

Comparing how people learn from the people who came before them, in real life to a game, is completely different from the comparisons you tried to make to dismiss it.

^^Correct, I am not willing to risk my rl discovering something, but i will take my chances in the virtual world. I learned that not all bulking methods are safe based upon individual past experiences; not willing to risk my life discovering a new method as opposed to discovering a dungeon on my own (My life is not on the line, so why not, its a game, a relaxing experience); you do not view this as bizarre?

Yes there are videos which demonstrate how to get ripped/cut; but i use my own diet/method. There are showing me how they do it; but i made gains by eating different foods using a different routine; even my lifting form/sets/reps varies from the guys in the video. Some of those guys are not as ripped/cut as me; why should I listen to their past experiences? Do we all eat healthy? Sure; we are copycats to some extent; someone had to discover edible foods; but we have varying routines. Give me the food/weights and I will do what is comfortable in my eyes (Without risking my life); give me XIV and a game-pad and I will do the same (Since you like game/rl comparisons; there ya go^^).

Edit: Also, dying does have something to do with this topic; why should ppl watch the vids? oh yea...so they will avoid death/failing? Dying can occur due to a lack of experience or failing, right?

What ever happened to playing the game and discovering things for yourself?

I've never understood the mentality of joining a random PUG and expecting everyone to have spent hours memorizing fights and videos. For raids and end-game stuff, I can understand since you're usually playing with a set group, but for a random? Or even worse, in the leveling dungeons.

People constantly bitching at everyone else in the group for not studying Youtube videos was the main reason I walked away after hitting 50. I was hoping that people would have mellowed out over the last few months as I'm coming back, but it seems to have just gotten worse.

How did you know what to do for conflags and fireballs? Do you know how to handle Divebombs/Twisters/Dreadknight/Hatches? This information doesn't magically get absorbed by your brain through osmosis. If you don't know how to handle those things, I guarantee you will wipe your party.

Either someone told you what to do by typing out the strat (making someone else do the work you could have done yourself) in chat or you looked it up beforehand (research). Either way, that's not going in completely blind without knowing anything at all and winging it.

So in other words you want to be carried as you get killed from a mechanic you've experienced for the first time and the other people in the group have to beat the fight without you. The guy that goes into the fight like that is just as rude as the guy that screams obscenities when someone makes a mistake. Yeah learning something for the first time is fun but it should be in a group that has either all agreed to that first and are all new players, or left to single player games. You have other people with you that likely know the fight. You are just on the opposite side of the spectrum from the rager that insults everyone.

See, that's part of the problem. You seem to think that just because someone wants to play the game instead of watching Youtube videos of someone else playing the game, that they're just wanting the rest of group to carry them. That's a strange logic leap. Did it ever occur to you that people actually enjoy learning things for themselves? Did you not play games before Youtube and FAQs?

I didn't watch a guide at all in this game until Ultimate Ballad, I don't think it should be an automatic requirement though for people to go watch videos. Personally, I'd prefer to wipe 100 times, than spend 90 minutes with some jerk(s)

I can only speak for myself, but if I go into a dungeon for the first time, (as tank) I ask 3 very basic questions:

"Are there adds? yes/no"
"Do I ignore adds?" yes/no"
"Is there an aoe attack to avoid? yes/no"

Everything else, I can adapt to pretty quickly, no matter what these mechanics are. I'll even watch what the other people are doing, learn from them in real time. I'll watch what the DPS and healers do so that later, I can queue as a DPS or healer and have an idea what I'm supposed to do.

For the raids, there are like what, 6 tanks? Noone said the newb has to main tank. For CT, I'll watch what the main tank does and take mental notes. For full party content with 2 tanks, I'll offer to off-tank so I can see what the main tank does. If everyone moves at once to another area of the arena, I think "Ok, they are moving for some reason, maybe there's a big AoE coming. Tanks are standing here, so I shouldn't follow everyone else".

I can adapt pretty quickly and efficiently, but I know some can't. Still though, there's a lot of hypocrisy here. People tell other people not to be lazy and watch a who knows how long video that may or may not even help, yet the people saying that are no less lazy for not teaching their comrades the basics of the fight. People have said it a lot better than I ever could.

Hate to say this but you got limited choices with that mentality find people that have patience/don't do endgame/pay for a carry/hit the unsubscribe button.
IF you even make it to T5 DF groups barely get passed divebombs if your lucky anyhow. Most don't even make it that far

Join a PF group you will most likely get replaced since you will won't even know conflag and fireball (which is phase 1) which means you won't even experience the mechanics of the fight so therefore never able to learn the fight.

You can't compare CT to turns 4 and 5. Mechanics are easily explained in CT but not in T4 and T5. So if your attention span is that limited no offence but your probably playing the wrong game as this is what the game is learning mechanics and memorizing.

Don't get me wrong though sometimes going in blind can be fun but only if your doing it with like minded people. Me and my fc did it when we beat T4 the 1st time and lol did we wipe but the difference was we were all in agreement if it weren't a full party wouldn't have done that as we respect other people.

However I imagine you did that with friends/fc. No one has the right to tell you how to have fun as a full group the whole issue is solo players jumping on df knowing nothing and expecting other people to help you when you could have helped yourself on the most part.

Also only talking about endgame stuff as well.

This is the first MMO I've ever played that the majority of the players treat the game as a job. No one just kicks back and enjoys themselves here. Maybe it's the grind-centric playstyle of FF14, but I've never played an MMO before where end-game isn't done by guilds that have played together and become friends.

Between mandatory video game homework, people forcing their entire parties into speed runs, and people bitching when new players want to watch cutscenes, the general community in this game is pretty toxic.

Since we're talking about DF, I'm assuming you did this particular T5 using the DF.

Was the group totally made up of random 1/2 people queueing in the DF seperately or was there a 4-5 people group who queued together?

Did the whole group not know any of the mechanics beforehand?

If the answer to the prev question is no, did anyone give any instructions/tips prior to the encounter?

While you rise valid points and well constructed, this is wrong.
the sole purpose of the roulette is to help new players to get their way through the content. Not farming tomes quicker. Thus, you HAVE to expect to meet 7 people going blind in it. If you aren't expecting it, I suggest you stop the Trial roulette quick enough not to be disappointed.

Either someone told you what to do by typing out the strat (making someone else do the work you could have done yourself) in chat or you looked it up beforehand (research). Either way, that's not going in completely blind without knowing anything at all and winging it.

Spoilers for people who wouldn't want to know

You know that these mechanics (twister excepted) aren't that hard to learn/handle even going blindly ? I did that with my static (inb4 : "not DF", it wasn't available back when we learned it, even though if I got my clear with 15% echo due to various reasons) and honestly, if you aren't tunnel visioning things, it's pretty easy to understand how they work.
=> conflags and fireballs are easy to figure out. Really. Only thing you might not find by yourself easily is the conflag feeding for slow ones (which then become quick ones, and are much more difficult to handle)
=> divebombs aren't that difficult either. Circle > twintania appears > dive. Now to avoid it, well Titan is harder. The only point of the "run-the-hill" is to aim the dive in a tiny arena so that you can go behind Twintania and get safe quicker. You could easily avoid it by strafing in the middle of the arena.
=> DS on the other hand are tricky to learn. Once you figure out the timer though, it's only a matter of practicing.
=> twisters are the hard part, I'll give you that. You'll take a lot of time to understand it if you go blindly. Though once you try to move and notice you're safe doing it, you're good again.
=>DK aren't difficult at all. Just need to notice that you have to focus fire (but conflags taught you that already). Figuring that 2nd place in enmity never get targeted though is close to impossible. It makes the fight a pure luck factor at this point.
=> hatching is the same kind of attack as Aetheric Profusion. I think you can handle it pretty easily with the collars without too many wipes.

There are some people (or maybe I'm alone doing that) who just give information when asked to, and only to explain what happened. Things they could have noticed themselves on what happened just before.

Nothing teaches an aoe mechanic to avoid better than getting hit by it, and nothing says easy mode or entitled better than demanding everyone know a fight before they enter it.

Watching some you-tube video until you see it in your sleep is just being "carried" by those peoples forehand recorded experience of the event as defined by pretty much every you-tube "must" post in this thread.

Watching mechanics videos is far lazier than learning it firsthand, were not talking math class here.

Of course you can learn how each and every one of those mechanics work. Until you do, it's going to take trial and error to figure it all out, which usually means wiping/dying.

That all can be prevented or lessened to a degree by taking a few minutes to do some research. Most people don't enjoy wiping and if you can do something about it beforehand, why wouldn't you? That's the whole argument.

Want to bash your head learning mechanics on your own? Fine, just don't expect random people you may end up with to be happy about it. Learning mechanics with friends/LS/FC/etc? Have at it and enjoy yourself. He even said his party kept failing on conflags and fireballs, which tells me for some people, it may not be that quick and easy to learn.

If people are so my time self centered then how about we petition SE to patch out wiping and dieing altogether.

If conflags and fireballs aren't that easy to learn firsthand, I call BS on learning them secondhand greatly reducing wipes.

Why for that matter don't we all just watch videos of XIV and just not bother playing it at all.

If people want to rage like toddlers every time they wipe, I say stop playing video games.
