Life in Eorzea
A few common sentences I've seen recently I hope to address in this thread.
But first this thread isnt about SM/SSM (straight/same sex/marriage) - we have a thread for that already - please post there (here).
I've noticed in general but in particular about marriage thread people suggest that something is pointless and not worth talking about / including in game. (Marriage is a dev confirmed addition)
Please remember that most people admit the priority on non directly influencing gameplay items as low in their posts (roots thread) as FFXIV really needs more gameplay elements at this time. However keep in mind an MMO and most definitely an MMORPG is a world far greater then just how long you've spent getting your relic. When people remissness and have the nostalgia they also mention environment* and community (* environment is commonly disregarded though its proper usage is profound and has effect for the entirety of the games life).
Perfect is only made through perfection.
Now as I said this post is in particular about romance* and community.
*I submitted on accident so the title misrepresents the point a bit. Take a very vague social and compassionate approach to romance and not a lovers approach (will make reading make more sense.. lol)
This is a place where not only do we play but we play together, SE needs to build a strong foundation for our community to socialize and grow together. It should be self evident that a game that requires great team work and is placed in a world of thousands of people should have the necessary tools for social occasions, but I feel players often forget that "other people are out there". I think particular in this community as everyone dug into their static LS and got sour because of how the game turned out - but lets make sure ARR is not so.
Beyond the obvious "good community support is good" it is a Square Enix, Final Fantasy hallmark to work with friends and loved ones to accomplish the impossible (Every final fantasy either has one or both elements (teamwork/friends, love)).
When they add marriage** and some community members response is "bullshit" its quite sad - no I'm probably not going to use it, but adding community support to a game genre and a game series that lives and breaths compassion is 100% logical.
****Most of the community recognizes in order to create the best atmosphere for everyone and make the most sense as per FFXIV lore the name should be changed and ceremonies accordingly.
In general the community has also said that it would be convenient if this system included a close relational bond that doesn't mean love in a romantic way (brother/sister close kinship). More about marriage/kinship bonding/weddings should be discussed in those threads
The priority on getting a well realized and fitting system (which is extremely important) is currently low (priority), however the system should most definitely be on the to do list and it should be done well.
Other social systems beyond this one should also being considered (or should be).
- Chocobo races (dev considering)
- Holiday calendar (dev confirmed)
- Interactive app for smart phones (dev confirmed (features not 100% known))
- Marriage (Dev confirmed, community opinon requested - check specific thread to debate)
- RSS like feed for Free Companies (confirmed)
If anyone has any suggestions for better social play if you put them here I'll add them to the list. Otherwise please make another thread - and ignore those who don't strive for perfection ("too small").
All that being said this isn't a "SE should have everything done and everything done now" thread, things take time - be patient SE is trying as hard as they can as fast as they can, our job is to do as the forums where designed and give feedback (and make a great community :D), lets continue to do that.
In final words, or tl;dr. Final Fantasy games are about teamwork, character, passion, compassion, and saving the damn world. Lets make sure ARR can be called a true Final Fantasy and that it earns its numbers and stop attacking each other for trying to help. We need to stick together.

I think social is important but without the latter it becomes something like second-life. The gameplay and its framework must come first! After all when it comes to the social aspect, SE can only do so much - its up to the community and each of us to make it into something worthwhile and meaningful. Maybe your question should be - what can the community do to make FFXIV something more involving/social for its players? -

I do have to say there was some romantic tension between myself an my Miqo'te Path Companion.
I do ever so hope she returns. As I recall she owes me some... gratitude. -

ff12 didn't really have a central love theme or story arc, and i really appreciated that about it. you had some implied flirting between vaan and penelo, and it was clear enough that balthier and fran were an item, but none of it really had any impact on the story. i think that's an important distinction.

11-17-2012, 09:35 AMShougunI changed it to "most" people. Still editing lol - Accidently hit submit instead of preview >.>Quote:

11-17-2012, 09:38 AMQuesseI'm editing too :D Look at other thought about the community needing to contribute more. Still I think 'romantic' might be the right word just not the primary definition. Maybe more like #4 or #5?Quote:

11-17-2012, 09:38 AMHyristI know the popular thing is to lothe on FFXIII, but there was a subtle, hinted romance on top of the obvious one in that game as well. Which I found to be the better one and quite a nice step for SE to take.Quote:

Also a part of the community (that I addressed in the OP) was that its sad the community is so burnt on FFXIV that if its not strictly gameplay content they are not happy. Like the response to marriage being added wasnt "Oh I'll never use it but okay w.e Im going to find another topic to look at" and is instead "stupid, lets get rid of all of it"
But SE can do what they can while we do what we can. I would like to talk about what the community can do as well. -
11-17-2012, 10:06 AMRauAre you talking about Vanille and Fang? Or light and Hope? Hope needed a mother figure. Lightning was the first person there to support him in that role.Quote:

Sorry for posting with the word romance though - it wasnt my major intention to exclude the general social actions and kind of screwed up my end point ( community needs to stop jumping on those trying to help/square enix trying to make the world more homely - the reasoning is that square games are in general about compassion (better word then romance? lol want one word to sum up friendship and love at the same time and also give a sense of belonging.. thought romance did that XD). -
11-17-2012, 10:28 AMCichy
btw the main love story in XI was Roagrimm (shadow lord) and Cornelia, out of their relationship came out one of the greatest evils in that game

Its not really about community lol (though the ending trailer is :D ) -

That one scene when Fang looked at Vanille's mark was questionable at first, though. Especially with everyone's reaction to it.Quote:

I don't think MOST of the community thinks marriage in game should not be called marriage. Did you take a survey? Did you ask the whole community? Or are you just taking your own opinion and projecting it on others? Calling marriage something besides marriage is pointless.

Check out from 1:15 on. The sexual tension is off the charts! They are the true love story in FFXIV -

If it is aspects of bonding or just being able to enjoy your community in-game I think that player-created leves for gathering and crafting would be great. I started a more detailed discussion of that here: linky dinky doooo
What adds to the excitement is knowing that people are doing things around you let alone with you. This is a great way to continue to distribute money, items, and leves, while helping to maximize time. There is always something going on with which almost anyone can help. -
11-17-2012, 01:25 PMNixHello Punainen! I'm not sure if you've read much of this thread:Quote:

But in here there's a discussion about SSM and also renaming marriage to something else, the reason being that the word 'marriage' is uncomfortable for some to pair with same sex couples whether it is for moral or religious reasons etc. The idea of renaming it for this reason so that ingame marriage/partnerships can be all-inclusive and not exclude same sex couples and shake the stigma that has come to be associated with the word marriage has received a lot of positive feedback. If you're curious feel free to check it out^^. -
11-17-2012, 02:40 PMShougunOhh - player driven content, that is a very exciting idea!Quote:

It's nice to see SE adding things in that gives you more interest to log on every day. Seriously contrast that to WoW.. what did you do every week? I logged in twice, once to do heroics and then raids, the other to do dailies, or gathering. Seriously boring as hell. -

I'd like to see the game cater for many tastes, so there's the community 'fluff' type stuff and also the whole epic adventure side of things too! -
