Just a Paladin Idea for a Saturday Afternoon

Maybe for 4.0, whenever.

One thing I've heard is a pretty big problem for a lot of jobs (melee in particular) is the fact that it's very easy for them to lose their stacks if there's ever an instance where they're unable to keep hitting the boss (or something). Monks lose Greased Lightning, Dragoons lose Blood of the Dragon, and I'm sure there are and will be others.

What if Paladins had an ability they could use that would let their allies bash against their shield? Make it so the Paladin can be targeted for offensive abilities by allies for a set period of time, so that they can keep their buffs up and not have to lose out on the DPS they provide.

Just an idle musing on a Saturday afternoon. Might provide PLD with some unique raid utility, and give them the ability to help the group's damage out a bit for fights where the boss becomes untargetable.

Lol.

That would look so silly and only makes sense in game logic. Not saying it's a bad idea but damn... It'd be funny if it also does damage to the PLD leading to some hillarious deaths from Crits/overzealous DPS keeping their parses up.

Taking 'punching bag' to a whole new level here.

Good one as a PLD myself I approve as long as the hit is not crits....... I don't wanna die by my own comrade's hands xD

As a side notes that would makes PLD the true punching bag.

We'd see WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many PLDs now due to the defenses.

Or that WAR who...
- ...has Vengeance up. He will hit you back when you hit him.
- ...has Raw Intuition up and you gave him a buffed Heavy Thrust as a DRG from the rear.

But technically too hard to implement. Do you remember those moments, when NPC you talk to changes after second to foe you need to kill? (Those story quests in example, first you talk to them, then you fight with them)
The NPC is vanishing and enemy is appearing on NPC place- however 2nd one is a different Flag Actor (or simply different Actor).
In other words changing party member hostile would have to probably reload the screen or maybe even relog for the paladin, so 'pvp' mode could take effect. You need to remove the flag from player, and place another. Of course Flags work differently in other MMO, but it looks like FFXIV cannot make smooth flag changes.

However utility allowing paladin to freeze current status effects for 15 sec (usable only outside of battle) would be actually the solution.

Or perhaps something where you slam your shield into the ground to create a target dummy? Spawn an add with HP equal to the Paladin's that can't be damaged by the boss.

This Striking Dummy is actually not a bad idea, it could be used as a lvl 70 core ability to let boss target dummy instead of you for HP remaining.
Thou since Living Dead is still kind of problematic, i woudn't mind this ability for DRK.

Actually only WAR doesn't seem to fit for that wonderful technique.

Is there some official feedback thread we can present our Paladins' Striking Dummy Powershield idea?

Semi-serious, semi-silly. Came up as a result of a conversation with a friend about the different DPS jobs and their limitations, and it occurred to me that it might be useful. :p

It would be more situational utility, but I can imagine a scenario where a paladin in a cutscene is like "okay, Monk Friend, hit my shield so you don't lose your stacks."

"...okay thanks. *puncha-punch*"

A skill to summon a temporary Training Dummy?

Sadly, I'm the only one who gave him a "Like".

I think the Dark Knight version of this should be called "Kylo Ren" and it allows party members to damage the DRK for a range of time, converting a portion of the damage to a STR modifier that is added to the DRK for 20 seconds after the "damage dealing" phase is ended. If the devs want to make it really broken, change STR to VIT.

I am having a hard time thinking of a WAR version...

In another thread a while ago I made a comment that when a PLD stops to stoneskin themselves before a pull when I need to hit something to keep my stacks up it makes me want to use my ability on them! Good to see that the PLD's are on board with this XD

Yeah! They could call it "Shadow clone," or some other equally whacky "shadow/shade/darkness/abyssal/blah blah/darkness" name lol. It's active trait would be called "brooding," which provides passive enmity generation for every strike delivered to the dummy/clone thingy ... I can already see the profanity macro's people would slap onto this ability lol.

Nay. i gave too, not the first post, but dummy summoner one. :P i am cool.

But since 4.0 will mots likely provide traits, i only pray for living dead trait, changing mechanic for this skill in particular.

Am I the only one that imagined the hilarity that could happen if the paladin fat fingered this ability during an AoE pull? Like, right before the summoner and black mage let loose with Death Flare and Flare respectively.

WHM: "What? The hell did you die from?"

PLD: "I got nuked by the BLM and SMN..."

Casters: "Wooow. GG no re."

Even better if someone used an AoE LB for whatever reason.

Some places are locked off, until you defeat all mobs.
Plus, most mobs has faster moving speed, than non-sprinting player character, so dragging a mob will not always allow for comfortable punching mob, sustaining everything until tank drag mob to next wave of enemies.

Umm this does fit WAR ppl... jeez..

The WAR would be the dummy and every hit would increase his str a bit but once a threshold point is reached, where str stat can no longer be raised, any hits after drops the hp threshhold but more then the str increase. Eg say 50 pot attk boosts str by 1 but after the threshold hp goes down by 2 or 3.

I'm not saying 2 or 3 hp or 1 point of str but they are just numbers to help convay my meaning.

Right, as I said it isnt a catch-all, it's just something you have access to right now.
Bosses being untargetable and pulls where everything dies at the same time will also be exceptions

Lol, the mob trails behind the PLD though. If you can't catch it, you won't catch the PLD, unless the PLD slows it's pace.
Also, since you mentioned punching, you've got fists of wind at your disposal as well as shoulder tackle. Even sprint plus invigorate is an option if you've fallen behind. If you can't catch the mob as a monk, it's due to lack of trying

WAR: throws out its holmgang chain and drags a dead mob behind him that can be pummeled for the duration of the buff. At the end WAR will chuck the mob as a projectile.

Okay - so you can't really have people hitting people (but it makes sense...sparring during downtime almost) however what if it was an ability called Heroism where comrades are inspired by the Paladin's courage and valor, thus gain +15 seconds to their current buff (+20% Wind thing for Ninjas, +15 Blood of the Dragon for Dragoons, +15 Greased Lightning (Whichever stack it's one, I, II, or III for Monks, +15 for Black Mage Enochian) etc...

Edit: I want to say I don't even play Paladin at all. Mine is 24, I don't really like the job...however I think this should stay Paladin only raid utility to increase value and keep "Class Identity". I know the whole "bring the player, not the class" mentality but I think that's part of what killed a certain other MMO...everything got homogenized...and classes lost identity.

Yeah, your idea is almost exactly what i proposed already, that would be easiest and most comfortable for players and SE both.

However, lately i started to wonder, if SE didn't project dungeons purposely in the way, that all dps could loose their stacks between reaching next set of mobs.
That would explain distances and overall lack of maintaining buffs outside of battle.

Anyone knows anything about that?

This made me chuckle a bit. ^^

It would be nice if paladin had more supportive abilities tho. Something like Tempered Will refreshing all the buffs - that would certainly bring this skill up.

It would be interesting if SE considered loosing the stacks and the build up phase while setting up balance between the jobs.

I don't lose my stacks in between most set of mobs as monk if tanks do it right.

I've always thought it'd be kinda cool if Sheltron got a trait that would make it restore MP to nearby party members if theirs was full, that way the restore from sheltron isn't ever wasted. Unless somehow EVERYONE manages to have full MP

Or just remove Darkside MP outish sources regeneration penalty.

Or you could give DRK access to BLM skills, and make it so Blizzard II gives them Umbral Ice.

That would be like... DA+SE 4 times in a row > blizzard2 > scourge > Salted Earth + Dark Passenger > HS > SS > ♩♩♩ Dark Arts everyday ♩♩♩ *Minfilla singing* > blizzard2 > repeat

not to mention trash pulls. Pulling whole damn dungeon and just spamming DA+AD with blizzard2.

First part of your sentence was good, Converse sounds like a lvl 50 DRK skill, but somehow, we got shitty LD over Converse (Aka Souleater >.>).
