Why do casual players seem entitled to cosmetic items added in game?

Like I said, ideally you would want more, implying that it should be normalized and that the release frequency for hairstyles should be much greater. E.g., imagine thinking it’s acceptable for a studio of this size to release a hairstyle already ingame well over a decade after initial appearance.

Comparison with default gear is a false equivalence, you’re going to see far more people in level 1 race gear, as it is a necessity factor, not one created out of choice.

Looking unique comes from a diverse amount of options, not a core feature that is on creative life support. That tries to add artificial diversification through putting rewards through content with notoriously poor shelf life.

By your logic, as soon as a clothing company adds a new shirt to their collection, the next day everyone will want to be wearing the same thing.

By my logic, if something simply were added to the base available options, it becomes just another option in a pool of them, and it will have its place in the distribution of which hairstyle people may pick for their character.

By your logic again, every character should come out of character creation looking the same, because one of those options in there logically has to be the latest to have been added.

The only time I have seen a phenomenon where suddenly almost everyone was using the same clothing or cosmetic items, was when the Nier raid dropped 2B gear and whenever a seasonal event awards an outfit that fits in with the event theme, and even those times were always quickly passing fads.

Yes, and the Nier raid reward dropped every time and was casual content. It would not have been nearly as prolific if it was a savage reward. Hence, it would be more unique. Thank you for providing a great example of my point.

It was also, very notably, a gimmick. For reasons that remain with us until today, as you must surely well know. But anyway, if you read the things I wrote and that point is what you pick up on and make this kind of take on, then I don't think we're living in similar universes of thought. Not saying that's a bad thing, just that it means we are unlikely to ever come to agree.

"People want to look unique" is just rich.

You all know when a new cute hairstyle is easy and fast to obtain at little cost there will be a thousand miqo'te and viera waifus, who already use the same kind of glamour and face, using that hairstyle for at least a year on.

It is a gimmick, and one that is easy to acquire. Doesn't change the fact that if it was from savage you wouldn't have seen it nearly as much and, hence, it would have been more unique. You don't make something unique by giving it as an option to everyone. That simple.

i miss the days when we are just players and not sorted into these rankings

when i joined this game in 0'20 it wasn't like this. there was no casual or raider. nobody respected raiders really and the devs didn't cater to them. so the toxic ones left for games that they could get their high from.
I was even allowed into shiva prog parties with no savage clear experience , trash dps, no fflogs uploaded and barebones understand of mechanics. i emt many wonderful people who helped set the expectations raiding for me when my current static were forcing me to prog to p2 all alone in pf from scratch with no savage clears. after that i got invited to e8s static run by an extremely skilled BLM who never once cared about my dps or performance and we eventually went on to clear it

nowadays this would simply never happen because id just be called a waste of peoples time

First, the option is there. Not everyone will use it, as in your own words it is an option, implying there are other things too. Second, do you only use a hairstyle on your avatar? No armor other than what is required for your stats? Basic John Fantasy Hyur? No. To put it simply, multiple people can use the option that this hairstyle is and still look entirely different, or... unique. More things than just a hairstyle go into making a unique avatar. Would think a Balmung native such as yourself would know that. Run around your quicksands a bit and do your best to notice the vanilla game avatars.

If the option isn't there, then even fewer people will use it. The fact that there are several people crying about being unable to use it because it's too costly/hard to get is evidence that more people would wear it, IF THEY COULD. However, they can't, which means the people who have worked for it will probably enjoy having a hairstyle that not everyone can get (hence, unique).

You’re making the fundamental mistake of assuming that people complaining, are doing so because they actually want the hairstyle, several people have issue with it in the basis of principle and expressed concerns with long-term rewards behind content with low shelf life. This does not mean they would necessarily want this specific hairstyle. If I wanted it, I would already have it and would already be wearing it. But it isn’t my style and nor do I find it cute. This isn’t 2013 with all the miqo’te Lightning hair enjoyers anymore. People will use what they want and which suits their character, not what a random forum user tells them is cutest new fad cuz flowers.

As far as I am concerned whilst I would prefer all hairstyles be default, due to this games sheer limitation and creative bankruptcy. But if they are at least going to follow this precedent, then the content they place it behind should at least have a decent shelf lif, regardless of whether that’s through casual content, or more difficult content with some teeth, or a long term grind that people engage wit, or a combination of several points.

EDIT: what people think is ultimately their prerogative, I could say the same about certain threads.. can you really be surprised with this reception when OP essentially went on a rant about the quality of players in 24-man alongside several other people, just to then make a thread about how “entitled” casual players are when they state why it is an issue…?

I agree that there really isn't an objective way to decide where rewards go, and also that many people are miffed it is in savage because they don't do savage. That said, there is a broader context which I'd suggest makes it a poor decision to put it in savage.

1. Patch cycles are front-loaded with high-end content. Casuals are thus feeling neglected.
2. One of the most-requested additions for years have been more long hairstyles.
3. The hairstyle has no thematic link with the raid.
4. A perception (possibly false) that cosmetics are held in higher esteem by casuals than raiders.

We can create reverse-scenario analogies. It would be puzzling, for example, if being rewarded with BiS required you to catch all the rare animals on Sanctuary Island.

Place all this in the broader context of an uninspiring story, really miserable society quests, and the narrative that SE is pandering to hardcore players, and this reaction was completely predictable. Casual players -- the largest sub-group in the player base -- are feeling unloved, and are complaining as a result.

And yes, I recognize it can be bought on the MB and that mitigates the above somewhat. Honestly, the only way any of my characters would wear it is if they accidentally got transported to Haight-Ashbury c. 1968. I can almost smell the patchouli.

Well, casuals neglect the game, so why shouldn't the game neglect casuals in return?

See this is where the problem is coming from

1) conflation of 2 points in this thread. Casual content being under-offered this expansion is not the same thing as saying “if you both aren’t willing to try CAR or buy it you shouldn’t feel entitled to it”. I fully agree that casual content is pathetic this expansion but that’s got near nothing to do with the idea that if you aren’t willing to go for a rare item in various ways you shouldn’t feel entitled to it. Is there an argument the hair shouldn’t have been a savage reward; yes I’d say there is. But in the context of the fact it is one if you won’t try one of the two avenues to get it then that’s more a personal problem

2) the reward is no more “casual” than it is “hardcore”. You specifically use the analogy “what if BIS was locked behind IS” directly implying that this is a casual reward locked behind high end as your analogy is the reverse. What makes this a “casual” reward? How do you determine what rewards low effort casual only players intrinsically have the right to? What if this reward was instead say a reward for 10/10/10 in Bozja. That’s all casual content but it’s a long grind people wouldn’t like. How do you determine as a playerbase wide arrangement of who is intrinsically entitled to what based on what content. It feels like most of these complaints are proxy complaints for lack of content

Sure, people tend to complain more when they are annoyed about other aspects of game direction. Many people are currently very annoyed.

FWIW I don't think people are entitled to any in-game reward. But "being willing to try CAR" doesn't earn you the reward, does it? And encouraging people to try CAR is a pretty bad idea when most cannot clear it and will simply annoy the raiders.

So sure, it can be bought. And many casual players, rightly or wrongly, see this as their gil being siphoned off to hand to the favorite players. The players SQEX actually values. Because they play the game how SQEX wants them to. See how unpleasant this gets?

Basically I agree with you. The complaints about the hairstyle being locked behind savage are intertwined with a host of other complaints about game direction, the majority of which are legitimate. In that purist and abstract sense, I can see how the complaints come across as entitlement.

Here's a thought experiment. Let's suppose six months ago, we had a thread here titled "What could SQEX do in 7.1 to most annoy the playerbase?"

I would bet folding money a top answer would be "lock a long hairstyle behind a savage raid." The only reason it might not appear is most people couldn't conceive of SQEX doing something that monumentally stupid.

I'm not entitled to the hairstyle. Conversely, Square Enix isn't entitled to my money. This is just yet another thing that feels bad in an expansion full of things that feel bad. It feels like all the cool new cosmetics are store content now, or locked behind a 24 person Savage. Yes, you can by it for 50 million, but most people don't have that kind of money lying around unless they're doing the FC submarine thing. And the price will only increase as people run the content less.

Here's a key difference. A non-raider has no use for BiS gear. All players can use a hairstyle.

This is simply not true. That's like saying non-raiders have no use for learning their rotation properly.

BiS gear helps with clearing content faster on all levels, which is espcially usefull if you are grinding content over and over. Even Fates. Plus it helps to outweight bad optimization and errors in your rotation to some degree. It also helps with survivability when you eat a mechanic.

And of course it's simply nice to have some sort of character progression and getting stronger, this is an RPG after all.

You are technically correct, but in this case that may not be the best kind of correct. The margin of difference just isn't relevant enough in any content that a casual player will be facing - it's like expecting a car designed for the race circuit to speed up your daily commute in city traffic.

But in going in for a 'technically correct', you use a technicality to distract from a fundamentally valid argument about why certain types of reward should or should not be behind certain types of content.

If a reward either benefits neither or benefits both it doesn’t work

Glam weapons, mounts, adventurer plate stuff, titles, none of them can be justified under that logic because there is nothing that intrinsically links them to high end content

Honestly, I never thought about this before but Im glad you bought this up. The casual to mid-core players can buy the hairstyle from the MB but it's not really a feel-good buy honestly. Like look at this patch, raiders got everything. They got new content, 2 mounts, a hairstyle, more gear(that can be used as glam and BiS), and a way to make lots of money. What did casual to mid-core players get? The ability to give raiders gil for a mount or hairstyle. It just feels like a rich get richer and poor get poorer situation where the favorited player base gets everything and the other player base only gets the ability to hand over their money to the favorites.

Have to raise some doubt on that there, because a lot of the things you mention wouldn't be seen as basic character customization options. Nobody ever complained that only people who clear PotD can get "Necromancer" or that you need to clear ultimates for the Legend titles. Owning a certain mount (especially if the mount is e.g. the raid boss or otherwise obviously related to the raid itself!) or not is not as personal as the hairstyle on your character that makes your character look like "your character". Portrait frames.. well, I don't actually know how much people care about those, but again, they're hardly on the level of something that defines the perceived identity of your character in the game for you as much as a hairstyle does? So I get why people draw a line there.

That applies when Gil is around as a somewhat limited currency, but you can generate it en masse out of nowhere through roulettes, turn-ins and society quests.

Yes, I know you can make gil but that's not the point of my reply you replying to...All those ways to make gil isn't new or even that fun...I find doing roulette extremely boring to do bc you get the same old duns every single day, the turn-ins just feel like chores, and dailies are also so boring. The point is there is nothing new for casual and mid-core players to do right now. Yes, they can farm gil to buy the hairstyle, but the ways to do it have been in the game for years and all of it just boring and feels unrewarding to do. Meanwhile, raiders got everything so far the expac. I don't think ppl feel entitled, I think ppl just want something to do that is new and fun to have the chance to earn a reward. If they added a new way to earn gil this patch that was fun for casual and mid core players to do then getting the hairstyle from the MB wouldn't feel so bad IMO. But instead, they get nothing and have to hand over their gil over the raiders who got everything.

This I think is very much expected behavior. I don't think it's indicative of the content already dying. I think it's indicative of how aggressive the First-Time bonus was. People were getting copious amounts of Bonus Demimateria, but now the newer player bonus is starting to dry up, so now the actual grind element is factored in. What once took 1-2 runs for people to get the hairstyle via Demiamteria will end up taking significantly more runs to obtain.

People will now see how much of a grind this can actually turn out to be.

Yeah...as someone who hasn't had the time to even prog the fight yet, Im not looking forward to how many clears it's going to take to even get the hairstyle. Assuming there are no first-time bonuses after my first clear and Im the only first-time clear in the group I clear with, it will talk 47 clears just to get enough Demiamteria 2s to buy the hair. If I want the tile mount as well that means another 75 clears... Honestly if anything the cost of these items needs to be lowered a bit to ease the grinding. Like don't get me wrong I don't mind grinding but grinding COD doesn't seem fun at all since you have 24 players every time you want to farm and you have to deal with wipes and mistake more often since getting 24 ppl to do mech perfect nearly every run is harder than the fight itself.
