I generally just go out and gather all the things I need for a crafting project for the day.
Besides the point: What you buy, someone has stores of, ie likely mostly taking up some space in an inventory.

Because I have all my gatherers leveled and it's a waste of money buying mats. It's also a waste of time goingout to gather only a specific amount exactly whenI need it. And I don't think you are considering people with all classes leveled - of course we have a lot of gear.
Sure, if I only had one or 2 classes leveled the current amount of space would be plenty. But with all 50s, it's far from it.
That may be the case on a large pop server, but on smaller ones, like my own, what you need is never on the market board. If you don't farm it, you better expect to pay way more than its worth.
I'm a bit offended by this whole thing really. The amount of content in this game is doubling, or at least that is what Yoshi P has said, and we are paying for the expansion, as well as the subscription cost. So why charge us even more? It's an insult to the entire player base.
I think the inventory issues stem from the system they built upon. I agree from a service standpoint that the inventory should not be an issue for people who want to play everything because it is an option. I'm tired and half asleep, so I could be half-dreaming up this answer, but they could probably update their database with a new table that keeps track of specific player IDs and pairs them up with the IDs of items that they own or owned. With that in hand, the player only needs to have owned an item at some point in time to count towards glamour. The game would just query the game's database for items you owned, show you a list, and let you pick what you want in order to change your item appearance using the glamour system. No inventory space required.
This would require changing the schema of the database, but adding a new table that doesn't effect any of the other relations shouldn't pose an issue for the design team.
I would really like to find someone with all classes to 50 who thinks storage "isn't a problem". If such a person exists they must not care at all about glamour.
Not limiting. I simply choose what is worth my inventory space and what is not. A glamour item that I obtained 4 months ago that I haven't used once isn't worth it to hold on to just because in an unspecified point in the future I might use it. If I ever want it again, I'll farm for it.
Speaking of! I finally went and cleaned out all the Mats I'll never use. Things that don't sell get vendor-ed. Things that do, yay~ But ya... I'm never ever again filling two inventories worth of mats ever ever again. Oo My main inventory still is stuck with 1.5 tabs free.
After looking you up, I can fully see why you don't need retainer space. Cul is your only craft. You only have 2 classes at 50.

Well I'm the master of a free company that regularly recruits new people to the game and it is very rewarding to be able to help craft them HQ gear anytime they need to to help them on their way to 50. Since I have 50 in every crafting class, I am able to do so, but only because I have already spent hours farming and collecting extra materials to do so. When you are still as new to the game as you are, its really not possible for you to grasp just how much there is in the game.
I've been playing for nearly a year-- I just don't feel the need to hoard every single item I get, especially not if it's something that can be easily obtained. If I don't like the way a particular piece of gear looks, I turn it in for seals rather than keep it around for the sake of having a complete set. If it's a crafting material and I haven't used it in 2 weeks, I sell it. I used to hang on to everything and I ended up with an inventory full of junk that I wasn't using and that was just taking up space, so now I much prefer to pare things down to what I actually do use and need on a regular basis.
So you're stockpiling weapons in the vague and not-even-definite chance that maybe - just MAYBE - you might use it someday as a glamour? Well, I'm sure come the day Yosh let's us have a glamour for every day of the week then you'll be set!
This again. It makes sense to stockpile given materials for regular routine projects or materials that can be troublesome to come by, but to stockpile anything and everything without an actual plan to use all of it in the near future? THAT IS ALL WHAT HORDING IS! You're hording damn near everything and bitching to SE because they aren't giving you something to encourage continued terrible habits.
You're not getting it. We have a mansion I craft things for regularly, which I still have to go farm logs and shards for very often. We use the mansion as our own personal city. We have everything a city has and more because of the crafting looms. When I am crafting HQ sets every day for something, I use just about every type of material I have, and I have a lot. Just today, I crafted about 40 pieces of HQ gear each for about 15 different people that want to try AST, DRK, and whatever Machinist is abbreviated to. Do you know how many different materials that takes? It's probably a full retainer's worth of different materials. When it is crafting that many items, it is insane to sell items to an NPC when it might cost me 1000 gil to craft just one piece of material when considering shard costs.
Not to mention the crafting I do for spirit bonding, the crafting I do to sell, and there is just so much more that you really aren't considering.
We have 10 levels as opposed to the previous 50. It's -impossible- for them to double the number of gear sets within those ten levels unless they have two alternative gear sets per single level. This is assuming that not all 51-60 gear will be class-specific, which would just be outrageous. Similarly, it wouldn't make sense to have a new potion and food tier for every 2 levels, would it?
Considering that, I very highly doubt that crafting materials will be doubling in count. No, I'd say when Yoshi P was talking content, he was talking content. Content as in "things to do", not "thinks to have".
I'd say it's a safe estimate that we'll have 2 (maybe 3 if they really push it) new tiers of crafting materials for 51-60 crafting, then 1 material tier beyond that for 60 star crafting. At the same time, demand for the highest no-star level 50-ish materials and materials for 50 1, 2, and 3-star crafts will all drop, with 1, 2, and 3-star craft materials dropping to the point where you likely won't even want to stock them at all.
All in all, I don't think the inventory problem will be anywhere near as severe in HW as people seem to believe. Unless you're one of those people who has to collect every cool glamour item in existence, that is, but at that point you're just asking for inventory problems.
I have four retainers. Currently, one is almost completely full of soldiery/HA gear, Levi weapons, Shiva weapons, etc that I was hanging onto until we can desynth it as well as a few glamour pieces that won't go into the Armoire as of yet, blank glamour prisms, and rare dyes. That one will be mostly empty once I login to Heavensward. One is full of materials that I commonly use for Culinarian crafts (I sell a lot of food). One is full of materials commonly used for crafting equipment (a wide selection of different leathers, lumbers, cloths, ingots, and other sundries). One is where I keep things like potions that I use regularly, demimateria, soldiery mats, seeds, soil, materia, carbontwine/coat... basically miscellaneous junk. I started storing a lot of stuff in the Free Company storage like a lot of the more common mats (peacock ore, etc) because I just don't have room.
Honestly, the best part about having more than two retainers is the larger market presence you have.

...so, maybe not doubled exactly, we don't know; but this is still definitely alarming.Quote:

Pretty much. If I pick up a dungeon piece for glamour and don't use it within a couple of weeks, I just desynth, spiritbond, or turn it in for seals. If I decide that I really want it again later, I'll go farm it. Of course things that aren't easily replaceable are a completely different story. I could still kick myself for getting rid of my Imperial robe and helm from the MSQ. :c
Actually, now that you mention it, my inventory will go way down too because I have a bunch of HA/Levi/Shiva/Ramuh stuff sitting around that I greeded on thinking I could turn it in for seals. It seemed like a waste to ditch it when I knew they would give us the ability to turn it in eventually, but that will free up a considerable amount of space on my retainers.
Lets be honest
You already have several hundred inventory spaces
If you can't manage with those, these extra retainers will allow those not so good at things to get by : )
Please look forward to it.
And that space will be immediatly filled with Heavensward stuff like "Oh, nice lv55 bow I just dropped there. I'll hold on to it for when I'll be leveling my Bard".
Plus new mats.
Plus new Glamour items.
Plus new potential events items.
Plus all these desynth stuff you'll need to level up desynth.
Plus new housing items that don't fit in your house just yet.
Plus every leveling gear you'll need for non-50 classes/jobs.
I really do not understand people defending this change.
Do people like being screwed over? Is it fun?
Why are people happy about a service that should be in the game by default?
Why are people happy that some players will have a clear advantage because they spend more money?
I really do not get it. Maybe gaming is doomed to die after all.
SE should hire you for all the free PR work you're doing! :^)
No, I will not throw away all these event items and the ones filled with memories like my very first Allagan Weapon, dropped on my very first T5 down.
I'll also not throw away all these materias I have just because Lv.V is on the way.
Same, that pre-50 gear is staying with me since I still have to level some crafting classes (which is also why I won't throw away old "junk mats", because I'll need them) and because the new classes are Lv30.
You cannot just throw away everything and call it a day.
Seriously tho', why the hell don't you want free inventory space? In what way will that harm you?
Everyone against the idea of free inventory space just sounds like they are saying something like this: "I don't want to end world hunger because I have enough things to eat already, thank you very much."
This is why we can't have nice things.
I know I don't have much to say on this matter since I only have 2 jobs at 50 and don't craft except when I am bored, so I got plenty of free room.
But remember that this is a RPG game, and with all RPGs (I have played atleast) there are limitation to how much you can hold at once. We are given a choice on what we wanna keep and sell etc etc.
BTW, most event/season stuff can be bought by a vendor (as long as you finished it once). I have done so several times and sold on the market and earned myself a few GIL doing so.
And ofc I don't mean that you have to throw away EVERYTHING you have stored. But maybe sort out stuff you havn't used for a long time and perhaps sell it for a few GIL on the market. And if needed later on, buy some or gather it yourself.
Since the prices on the marker changes constantly you could sell something and later buy it much cheaper. I have done so many times aswell and earned more in the long run, itemwise and GILwise.
