To the people who are logged in overnight

simply put, I totally agree with the second post in this thread from Lexxuk. He hit the nail on the head.
There's no fucking way I'm logging out if I can help it. Hells no.
Spending 6 hours a day just to log in is not my idea of having fun.
I got in, I'm staying in.
I was logged in from friday 2pm til about 2hrs ago when I got 90k'd, and can't get back on. I'm glad I didn't log out during that whole time or I'd have not gotten anything done. And when I get back on, you can be sure as hell I'm staying logged in until they turn off servers for maint. on wednesday.

Issue = Server-side
Solution = Blame the players

This is what I get for being nice and logging out. I cannot log in for 6hrs now and that not counting the 10 mins beak in between every 30 mins of log in attempts. If I ever log back in I am never logging out. As of now I have a higher a chance of winning the state lottery then logging in.

The amount of narcissism that I have seen in this thread is appalling.

I understand, these login issues stem from SE and their miscalculation of the amount of people wanting to play their game. As others have stated, this is unacceptable for paying customers. Thankfully, SE will be fixing these issues soon.

However, this does not excuse the behavior of players going AFK 24/7 in order to preserve their spot on their respective server. While I understand the frustration of not being able to play sometimes, choosing this course of action is only making things worse. It's simple - by going AFK for an extended period of time, you are taking a server spot away from someone who would actually be actively playing. No matter which way you slice it, staying logged when you are not playing is basic selfishness, plain and simple.

Honestly, I don't mind people who afk to stay online. I understand it. BUT, can I ask those who do AFK, please do it in an area that is NOT highly populated. The amount of lag near certain areas is insane. Thank you! :cool:

You people are aware that there are like 20 000 per server, and it only lets 5000 in at a time, right? Because it assumes there is a rotation of players online.

Staying AFK pretty much means you prevent 3 other people from playing, and changing a server supporting 20 000 to a server supporting 5000.

The servers could be fixed tonight, and we wouldn't know because the AFKers would cause issues tomorrow when the amount of log in and off are not what SquareEnix expected.

And you are all quite naive if you think they will up the count to 10 000 on the servers just to accommodate AFK play.

Well, I'm happy that you are somehow able to justify your actions and not feel bad about it, because I sure wouldn't.

I truly hope this community improves over the next few months. One of the main draws to FFXI was the great community. While there were obviously some bad apples, for the most part, people were willing to help each other out and treated everyone with respect. So far, I have not witnessed much of that in FFXIV.

Seems kind of stupid to pay all the extra money to keep your comp on 24/7 just so you don't have problems with a video game. Oh well, some people have different priorities, like none for example.

Cold not agree more, the rudeness, arrogance an entitlement that these.....persons... show is just insulting. Trouble is you cant really stop them. Even if they bring in a kick system all they will do si use macros to keep themselves moving to stop it registering :(.

These "individuals" think they are more important an it isnt fair to make them log out. I tend to show them the contempt they deserve. As a Whm it's fun because I know alot of the 24/7's on the server having seen them doing it for days. SO if I ever get in a group with them. I just dont heal them. While telling them exactly why.

You'd think this would be an easy fix.

Every town you go to in the game there are hordes of people that are AFK. Yesterday, I was playing for several hours in Gridania leveling my second class, and every time I came back to the city I began to notice that there were the same characters with the same names standing in exactly the same place. Once I started paying attention, I started to notice this in other "sanctuaries" as well. There are at least hundreds, if not thousands, of people doing this on each server and it's quite obvious if you pay a little attention.

I will log out like a normal person when I stop seeing 1017.

It's a localization issue. Because In Japan this type of thing would never happen and they need to realize for the western audience AFK timers need to be added ASAP

The funny thing is, The People who throw out these - "Stop being a child and log out already you immature piss ants" rants and ti-raids.. are the ones who are causing the issues by not logging out .. Most mature adults and or Mature teens/young adults would just say - "meh not working yet" and go do something else - like read forums filled with horrific temper tantrums to the likes of which you would see in the middle of the grocery isle when a toddler doesn't get the snack he/she picked out. - The double Standards to which most people live by is insanely amusing. Most of you who feel like your actually putting ideals and morals into these people are actually nothing more than just troll bait.

It's called Labor Day weekend, so go outside and do some labor. Your whining isn't doing anything.

People can log in quiet easy in the mornings. In my experience between noon and eight there is little point trying, unless you want to spend hours attempting. I don't fault people for not logging out at all with the state of the severs.

Until I start logging in instantly every time, I will continue to strategically remain logged in. I log out at night, but I login the next morning before I goto work so that I am good to go when I get home. I would also stop if they actually created a functional queue system. I would gladly wait in line, but this current "grab bag whomever pushes login at the right moment gets in" system shows a huge disregard for the time of players.

People like me who stay AFK are really a symptom of poor management and preperation on the part of SE.

How is this even possible? How does a glaring discrepancy like this even slip through the cracks? It just blows my mind that after 20 years of MMOs, it is even POSSIBLE for an established gaming company to make such a newb mistake.

I am disappointed with the community. SE may have been at fault, but we should work together to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the game.

Yet selfishness seems to have won. I do not have much to say, because I know that those who remain AFK will not see reason, probably even lack empathy enough to understand the damage of their actions.

Personally, though, I have been impacted. I have become wary of the people with whom I play. Even though I have been asked to join multiple Free Companies, I have refused--not because I do not want to join, but because I fear playing with a group that abuses the AFK system. And when I help people in the field as a WHM, I find myself acting out of principle rather than a joyful willing.

I hope that the community improves as the game ages, but I fear that since selfishness has dominated the game’s launch, a time at which everyone should be excited to play and experience the world together, the community will gradually wither.

My only recommendation to the folks suffering the selfishness of the many afkers, ignore it,people today are going down the drain and this world is full of selfish and greedy people. It will not change,do your part and live by the rules and laws that you deem honorable and worry not if others are not doing it.

People are crap, don't expect them to be otherwise.

i am an adult...so why cant you just log off when your done...and let others play the game instead you AFKer's just lag the whole system down. if you dont move for an hour it should be an automatic boot....

I'm curious about this in relation to the JP. Are they more considerate and actually log off when not playing for a long period of time, or do they, just as a chunk of the English speaking players, stay logged in 24/7?

As for myself I always log off when I go to bed, or am away for hours.

You seem not to understand that the problem of abusing the AFK system lies deeper than the act itself. Those who are willing to abuse the system do so because they do not care what happens to other players. Their selfishness is bred from a mindset that immediate gratification is far superior to the fostering of a stable, kind community. In a few weeks, when the server problems are fixed, will the game lie in ruin because of the AFK players? Probably not. But the people who were cruel enough to abuse the AFK system will mostly remain, and they will continue to act against the game in ways that will only cause the community to further decline over time.

The fact you're blaming the community, when they can't even play the game and use a "workaround" after finally logging on...shows how White Knight some people really are around here. It isn't abusing something if it is in the game.

You probably get mad when you lose to a fighting game player who just keeps using the same attack too. Players will use any means of winning. At this point logging into the game = winning.

You're trying to read a little too deeply into the mindset of the people who are going AFK. It doesn't mean they're terrible people, or that they're going to do terrible things to ruin the game in the future. Personally I've done the AFK a few times, and I've also just logged out sometimes. I logged out Friday, tried periodically to get back on Saturday, and then that evening when I got back on I stayed afk until today because I did want to get some playing done on the weekend. I'm not some horrible person who hates people and will slight everyone at every chance I get. I'm just a guy who wanted to play FFXIV this weekend.

i agree with this statement completely. people want to paint it black and white, to blame and demonize the players, who aren't even responsible for this issue. we have people blaming and demeaning others simply because they want to *GASP* play the game they bought! so horrible! that makes them such bad people, right? that they're staying logged in and taking slots from other people that they have no obligations or duties to!

it's ridiculous. you can't expect people to really care about a random faceless person behind a computer when it's something as trivial as being able to log into a game. it doesn't make you a baby puncher or anything silly like that, or even a bad person if you decide you want to stay logged in so you can play. no one is to blame here but square themselves for being unprepared. all of this worthless back and forth bickering between the two groups is absurdity at it's finest, and i can guarantee you nobody will even remember or care about this topic in a month's time.
