Other ways you can gift mounts to people until then is by buying them a steam card, paypal transfer etc etc. If you don’t trust your friends to use the money to buy the mount then consider who you’re giving gifts to in the first place. And FCs can gift marketboard mounts or whatever. Its not an apocalyptic situation.

Corporations DO make major mistakes.
Square Enix made a few recently, that cost them money.

They badly underestimated the potential sales of Endwalker and had to stop selling the game while trying to upgrade the servers.
They let a major code bug through the QA tests and caused the first Housing Auction to be a disaster.
I can mention a few, minor, story flow errors in Endwalker that have left many streamers emotionally uninvested in *Spoiler Redacted*.

This is, IMHO, another such error. The anger here is a symptom of that mistake.

It's not looking like an error on their part, but a problem that picked up back in September when they originally announced they were suspending gifting. There was that huge breach elsewhere and a bunch of accounts managed to get compromised, which made more resources available for RMT. A lot of those accounts had saved payment info and you know what happens with that. There's plenty of user fault in this, especially with the people engaging in these transactions thinking they were safe.

Or you know. The fact that people almost 10 years in STILL don't use OTPs to protect their accounts. An OTP would have literally prevented this from happening but sure let's fault SE for having to implement a system in response to user negligence. At this point anyone who got their account compromised deserves it for the multiple user failures you would have to imploy for that to happen. They should also go a step further and mandate the usage of an OTP on all accounts.

No, it doesn't have the same implications.

As you presented it, a reader would think they said "we know this changes nothing and won't prevent any illegal sales, but we're making you suffer for it anyway."

When what they actually said is, "we know they'll keep trying to make sales, which is why we're also prepared to delete illegally-bought items from the buyer's account if we can confirm it."

The scammers will continue to attempt. The difference made by this change – at least in theory – is whether they can get away with it.

Except they aren't technically wrong. Your ability to "surprise" someone is in fact seperated from your ability to "gift" someone regardless of what you think it is. These two concepts do not run in tangent with each other. You can still gift someone something and you can still "surprise" them with a gift card. You can't surprise them specifically with a mount.

It's not technically untrue, it's just false. You can gift someone a gift card and still have it be a surprise. In what world is someone not excited at being given something by a friend in general when they're not expecting it? They're still ultimately receiving the gift from you when they purchase it with the gift card you're giving. It's just one step longer in the process now than before.

It sounds more like an issue of ya'll don't trust your friends to actually spend the money on the thing rather than lack of gifting at all. I get that it's frustrating that they took away convenience and the ability to specifically pick out what you want to send but trying to say people won't be happy over getting *something* still is a stretch.

Side note: I'm aware it does make holiday related things like Secret Santa challenging and those people I do feel bad for. I hope new plans are able to be made to still enjoy the time with your FC.

I have always been serious about acct security...and have been laughed at for it. ive just received an email from my electricity company telling me to change my passwords NOW..I did that already but I am pleased to see the email.

Folks: if you dont already have a one time password attached to your acct, no joke, DO IT NOW

As the holidays come around, more people are going to learn of these backwards restrictions and become angrier. I cannot imagine this is the best solution square can come up with.

I am saying their error is choosing the wrong solution.

In this case. Consider instead simply restricting the ability to purchase gifts to those accounts that have had a OTP for at least 30 days.

Sure, new accounts are restricted from gifting. But the ability for Streamers, Content Creators, FC leaders and RP social hub operators to continue their prize systems, and other use of gifts, would continue unhindered.

It would also solve the 'account got hacked and used for RMT' issue

As OTP and 2FA have proven the single most effective defense against such things.

SE chose a poor solution that carries negative effects, both for them, and for the players.

I don't think this change will stick, personally. The decision-makers behind this change have failed to realise the impact that this will have on their 'bottom line'. Once the impact of this sinks in we may see them change course.

Re: Just check lodestone info for one time items...

They would still need to check multiple sources as it's possible someone hasn't activated the item yet. It could be in the character's mail, possibly not even sent yet, inventory, retainer or chocobo saddlebag. On top of that anything account wide they would have to backtrack to the account to see if it's unlocked. Now, they SHOULD still be able to check all that, but we don't know what's preventing it from happening (lack of time to finish code before this all had to be implemented, access issues, etc). It's still annoying, but they can't just check the lodestone.

If this was really the case then this would be applied to the Job skips, story skips, and retainer boosts as well as these are all one time use items. The fact that these still can be gifted while mounts, minions, bardings, etc can't under the guise of 'want to avoid gifting things people already have' is just odd at a minimum.

Square Enix is a small indie company guys please understand, dont forget to keep buying items off the mog shop so you can fund the anti-RMT system that will never happen because its impossible to stop RMT, and please stay tuned for the next "fixes to RMT" that will only bother the players and not the RMT'ers.

The money they were losing from the chargebacks was magnitudes higher than the amount they would lose by implementing this solution in the short term. And if the multiple sources about Visa looking into them are true, they didn't have much time to work on a proper solution and effectively needed to get one out the door ASAP, thus had to go with the solution that would be quickest to implement without having to meticulously go over every single potential loophole. From a pure business standpoint, they can afford to temporarily annoy people in their fanbase for a short bit in order to crush the RMT vendors outright while they work on the actual solution.

Regardless of how players feel about it, the current solution is literally the furthest thing from a mistake to Square.

Especially since you fail to realize.that consumers, by far and large, are extremely forgiving and in the moment. 'Oops, we messed up! tee-hee' from Square in a few days/weeks time when they have the proper solution built and tested will instantly restore favor to 99% of annoyed people. Even in your new coke scenario, the moment coca-cola brought back the old recipe, their sales skyrocketed. and everyone forgave them as though nothing happened. New coke wasn't even a mistake for the company, it was literally one of the best marketing campaigns in history, completely by accident. If you wanted to cite a corporate mistake that had actual negative effects, I would have personally gone with Subway's 'not actually footlong' or 'their bread is classified as a desert in Ireland due to the amount of sugar in the recipe'.

If nothing else, just take a look at Blizzard's track record and how the vast majority of their consumers keep coming back to the new shiny thing, when every single game they've released lately has just been riddled with controversy.

"Diablo Immoral was ultra bad in its monetization, but Blizzard has totally learned their lesson and will make Overwatch 2 totally fair, right guys? I'm gonna buy day 1!"

WoW is the go-to scapegoat.

Which is funny, considering that - especially now, having gotten into WoW thanks to a friend's recommendation - it's abundantly clear Yoshida 'saved' 1.0 by literally just copy-pasting a ton of things WoW did. Beyond simple "taking inspiration", just full on yanking out WoW systems (and somehow making them worse more often than not). This entire game was genuinely built as an attempted WoW clone in a FF skin, so people bringing WoW up as the big bad evil just makes me laugh nowadays.

While its nice that the items can now be sent directly to a character in game (this change has been needed for a while) I was planning on gifting the shiba mount for Christmas, but now I guess I'll have to find something else.
