not sure what is hard about clicking a character and putting in /tell <t>
Because you can do it only if the character is in your screen ? Maybe when they pull up a search for players will be different.
Btw i don't think Se will ride of surnames. First, because is a no-problem, second all the people with the same name will need to change it (and i'll get very angry if someone steal my name), and third because playing with databases isn't a good idea. Not in a way like that
or in your ls you can tell, or your friends list, or sent you a tell first. i was just saying that if someone, you do not know, you want to talk to removing the surname is not going to help. what's the difference between asdfgasdfg asdfg and asdfgasdfgasdfg? if they are going to have a strange name the name will be strange regardless of surname or not. i used that name because they said limit to 15 chars so i made it exactly that. i don't mind the option for not using it for people that only want 1 name, but the excuse of trying to send a tell will not change if it happens.
Problem is, the only people defending surnames are people who currently play FFXIV right now - many of whom defend lots of the decisions currently made by SE. A lot of people had their minds set on a name for their character, only to have a wrench thrown into the equation when SE dropped the surname bomb. I don't think surnames is a nice thing to have. I think it is detrimental in many areas.
A lot of players who would like to use words or names from other characters they've created in other games would then have to figure out some bogus last name to satisfy a requirement to play FFXIV.
Surnames need to go.
Personally I'm for the surname since it allow everyone to use the name they want. I've read most of the topic and in the end it seem to get down to this.
With surname: You are sure to have the name you want, the downside is that you have to think of a surname.
Without surname: You can use the name you want without having to add a surname but if someone else got it first than you have to think of a second name.
The other argument like stupid names can be applied to both.
So in the end the difference is that with surname everyone is in the same boat having to use 2 names while without surname some people get their wanted name and the other have to think of another one.
Personally, since there are already a lot of people with the same first names, i'm in favor of the surnames cause otherwise a lot of people would have to change their names.
Edit: As for surname being optional(since I saw that suggestion in the thread), I have one question. If the name don't necessary have the same amount of word, how would /t work? Let say I remake a character and get the first name only username Aramil. Then another person create a character name Aramil What (Check on lodestone, What have been use a few time for surname). Would that mean that nobody would be able to send me a tell starting with What?
So basicly surnames need to go because you need to think to a proper surname ? quite a weak argument.
I'd say it's more a problem since there isn't a pg search, so yell for a pg search, not for removing surnames .-. also i say it again, working on an already implemented database can bring a lot of problems and can be detrimental. Why taking the risk for have less, for your ego ?
If you have some valid reason, explain what are these "detrimental in many areas."
I love that this MMO has surnames. It allows us to be more creative while having the name we want. Hated always seeing stuff like Cloud, Cloudx, Cloudxx, Clloudd, etc. I hated it even more when I had to come up with 20 different names because they were taken. I prefer being named Akumu Kuroi instead of Akumukuroi any day.
Get over it already... QQing over 2 names, 7 pages.
I'm pissed because I'd been hyped for this game and the char i was going to make for years.... Surnames??? Really??? what was the purpose? Maybe if there are thousands of people logged in at a time...
How is Mydicislarj better than Mydic Islarj just curious guys, hope you can help me out of this conundrum.
Sure, great. Drop surnames.
Make it where I can name my character whatever I want without it going "lol there can only be ONE of this name in the entire world pick another one" forcing you to add stupid looking stuff like "XxX---insert name here---XxX" when you do.
Wait, you can't do that? Then keep surnames.

Love to know scholars!
Yeah, poor arguments and trolling aside, don't remove the surnames feature, that's just.. dumb, really.
Do you have any idea how rare it is to find a game that doesn't have the stupid, arbitrary limit of one use per name? To this day, I've found three. Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Universe, and Final Fantasy XIV; and the first two achieved it by using a system of numeric character ID's that'd make very little sense here, not to mention would be very difficult to implement and make user friendly given the differing game formats. Besides, I like the forename, surname, format.
Even setting aside the fact that the level of coding needed to remove surnames would be huge to the point of not being worth it - just think how many game systems have to call on our character name, it's a lot more than just name display and chat - the idea is still stupid. It's stupid even setting aside my first argument; how do you handle changing it to a one-name-per-player system? Tell huge numbers of players 'Sorry, you've gotta put up with being Forra#12 for the rest of your time here, or delete the character you worked so hard on, then remake and spend hours trawling for a name that isn't already in use'?
Nah, not forgot - didn't know >.>
Still, horrible graphics aside (as in, not low graphics weight, just stylistically.. ick x.x at least to my mind. I mean really, sprites and environment at two different camera angles?) Ultima Online was something unbelievably special. It's a shame what it did can't really be done by a modern game, not without using an older, more dynamically modifiable graphics format would doom it on the wider customer base front.
You're not wrong though i'd argue the fact they restricted themsleves to those basical graphical elements allows what UO was was... ewww such terrible english. Basically the fact is isometric and didnt need everything rendered 3d let us have boats, houses, you name it(Im talking about whipping out a throne at e brit bank). It was a goood game game but just like wow, not for everyone =).
Wow is a very good game, only a retard would say otherwise, ffxi was legit in its own right, i'd argue how good it was outside of FF fans because to be frank I didn't find it enjoyable(and yes I've played many mmorpg).
I think what we're talking about is surnames and how games have worked quite well with ppl hvaing multile of the same name..
I still ask for those who hate surnames how Isuqdiq is better than Isuq Diq
???
Oh, no, as I said - ' It's a shame what it did can't really be done by a modern game, not without using an older, more dynamically modifiable graphics format' - IE: Isometrics.
I have nothing against Ultima's choice of graphics format I just.. don't get why the backgrounds had to be shown at an angle about 15 degrees off vertical, and the characters at about 30 degrees off vertical. I know a lot of people were fine with that but.. made my head hurt x.x Just like how WoW's choice of graphics, while not in any way bad, still make me feel ill for some reason >.>
Nothing wrogn at all wirth those probs. Just I like that gamestyle and im saddened many games dont adopt it? lol I'm sure you're not saying it's terrible either.
As I said i love eastern art, more animeish the better imo. I love it. just dont make it look like SOGA(eq2) it was so ugly and they specifically made that for east asians!!!!
I like surname. Honestly, naming system doesn't effect the game itself. It is an extra option you got. So, it is useful.
I still do not get why some people have a isue with them being made optional. I myself do not want surnames removed. All i want to see is them made optional for people like me who hate them with a passion and rather make it easier for people to communicate. Making everything more realistic does not always make a video game fun.
You don't care that we think this is a really silly topic.
And we don't care why you think it's zomg highly rofl important.
thread over?? :D
Optional is still the best solution. IF they made it optional id remake my character and restart the game i don't care surnames are retarted.
It's not going to be hard to find a name that is not already in use. It's not like this game is popular anyway.
I'm going to quote what you said on page 25:
From what I understood from that and the countless of time you've repeated the "don't like to be forced to use a surname" argument, you're annoyed because the name you wanted to use of course didn't had a surname and the inclusion of surname forbid you from simply using that name.
I understand why you can hate the surname, but guess what, I'm happy they're surname for the exact same reason.
Aramil is a username I've been using for years and while it's not incredibly popular, there's always a few people using it too no matter what the game is. Heck in Aion I made my character on the day of the release and it was already taken by someone on the server my guild had chose. Same thing in FFXIV, there's 15 Aramils according to the Lodestone and one of them is on the same server as me. I don't know who between him and I made our character first, however thanks to the surname, we can both use that username.
You said it's not going to be hard to find a name not already in use? Well it's not harder to find a surname, no, it's easier since once you've found a surname there's more chances that the username/surname combination is not taken.
While having something be "optional" would normally be the best solution, when it comes to names though that would not work out so well. You would have some names taken and some not. You would also have a ton of people that will be furious if they have to rename their character. I am not talking about 10 or 20 im talking 1,000s of people. Personally that does more damage than just keeping names the way they are.
I just really hope the devs realize that just bec this thread got so much attention does not mean the majority of us want something like this to ever happen.
..So now BOTH topics regarding surnames have moved up into the front page? Twelve be good, either remove one of these topics, or combine them together. Or drop the subject totally.

Takes a troll to know a troll.
At least I'm not creating multiple threads to 'discuss' the same pointless concepts of whether having an additional, and occasionally retardified, name behind your first name will detract from the fun and liveliness when all it takes is a few more strokes of the keyboard! Enough is enough. Shut down either thread, or shut down the whole topic altogether.
The best choice is to have a surname for everyone, or for those too lazy to think of a few more letters, an optional choice to NOT have a surname. Topic over. What else is there to discuss? BelgianRofl has already stated as such in his OP, except differently phrased.
No,no no BelgianROFL, surnames are not a problem at all and well there's like 500 reasons why already stated in this thread. If you want some "cool" sounding name like Thor, then i got nothing against that just make the last name a "!"! why ruin all of Ezoreas fun. The biggest problems this games has are silly quests that give no XP from fighting mobs, NO CHOCOBOS OR AIRSHIPS, and all sorts of silly bugs; not to mention my personal issues with the forest map (I usually like the forest maps best in these things...).
So buck up if names are on the top of your issue list then you must be having a blast playing! I wish i could have a middle name (but would be happy to see the option not to)! narf
Surnames should be something you could use ONLY if you really wanted, you know, like a second name to identify you from other people, but not something you MUST input in order to create a character, at first it was very uncomfortable for me to see my character running around with two names, but later on I just got used to it.
I mean I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but your guys ideas are just fantasies. There is no way SE would ever take away surnames or make them optional. The reason being is it would cause more damage to the game to change a system like that, thats already in place than for the people who dont like it to just deal with it or move on to another game. There is NO reason to take away surnames. Three is more benefit to having them than not having them. So if you think its such a wonderful idea to take them away, then how about someone come up with an idea where it wouldn't damage what we already have instead of just repeating what other people say in your own words.
Easy Flower, I was only letting everyone know what I think about it :)
i dont mind having a surname. I cant see SE removing surnames as it will cause problems. If they did what would happen to people that have the same first name?
That's the reason SE came out with the idea of adding a second name (Surname) :P...
But not everyone likes the idea of having a character with TWO names instead of a single name, personally it doesn't bother me much, except for the fact that I suck at creating a new character with different names each time, So I had to stick with the same surname to "Identify" (And save myself a pain in the..) and so my characters have all the same surname... kind of fun but annoying :/
Anyways I still can't get used to characters having two names, it's too bizarre for me xP
