I'm pretty sure you misread what I was saying. I wasn't talking about driving with a Drunk Driver, I meant sharing the road with one. Also fun fact, car exhaust is more harmful to breath in than cigarette smoke, it also lingers in the air much longer, but no one talks about the inherent dangers of breathing in vehicle exhaust. In fact, lets do a quick side by side. A person sits in a Garage filled with Cigarette Smoke for hours, doesn't die, sure they have an extreme headache and their eyes will hurt but they are alive... A person sits in a Garage and turns on the car and sits there for hours, dies.
Also, extreme examples of smoking would all be self inflicted. No one has ever, to my knowledge, had to get a hole cut into their throat to breath from second hand smoke. No one has ever died of lung failure SOLELY based on second hand smoke. However, People have died from "second hand drinking".
SE might even get into legal trouble as a 'cartoon' glamorizing smoking if they put such an emote in.
It would essentially be a 'catgirl' version of a Joe Camel advertisement.
That's litigation big enough to drive SE out of business and maybe even put some of their managers at risk of jail time in some countries...
I'd steer very clear of doing such an emote.
I'm actually curious about whether or not a certain already existing NPC could have put them at risk of this. Joe Camel basically was a lightning rod for legal action against big tobacco, and inspired all kinds of legislation against representations of smoking in products that could even be hinted as possibly being of interest to minors.
This is probably a hornet's nest we don't want to kick...
I agree they aren't likely to ever add this. That said, they're probably safe with what they've done with npcs, their legal teams are probably on the ball with that. They've cited similar concerns with poker but they were able to clear mahjong. Big difference between an npc doing it and giving characters free reign to do something though, so while they can add occasional npcs like Yotsuyu I don't expect to ever see it playable.
I hope so...
But I also imagine some State-DA looking to run for office somewhere getting it into their head to go after video games... and among all the things they'd look at over GTA and other games being so violent... we don't have specific laws for that, shockingly enough to those who have concerns over it... but promoting smoking to kids - zap... there's a job promotion waiting to happen for the DA that can run with it...
These things don't get decided based on what's the most solid case, good public safety, or good law... they get decided over what newspaper headline will get a DA promoted or elected...
As long as it's just one former villain NPC yeah that's in the past and minor... but put that on the 'main hero' and you've got your CNN Interview talking point ready-set-go...
High Summoner
Hyur Summoner
Sorry....had to do...it....2 years old....I know, I know......
not bothered to read all those pages, BUT, we already have an housing item thats an ashtray with a lit sigar in it, so yeah, i dont see the problem with this emote, just put the game on 18+ already, and the problem is gone
Not a fan of smoking but it would be nice if they release it.
Old thread, but +1 for smoking emote.
yes. Absolutely yes!
I have a cowboy glam that gives Jesse McCree/Hunt:Showdown vibes on my MCH. I definitely want this!
Yippy ki yay, omae.
Also, there are other NPCs in the game since ARR who have been smoking a long pipe in Eorzea so that seems to be the preferred way to smoke in the west.
Koh/Noah from the Crystal Tower quests is constantly holding their pipe in Rev Toll. I also remember a Lalafell miner in North Shroud west of Fallgoard Float who has the same emote. There are probably a few other scattered NPCs doing the same emote in ARR zones.
SE eventually gave us NPC emotes like shiver and sweat but at this point if we don’t have this one, we may never get it. While I hate smoking irl, I personally don’t have a problem with it in-game but can understand why they wouldn’t implement it. Strange thing is though is that I’m pretty sure the game is already rated for tobacco use.
Oh wow, one of the first threads I ever posted in.
Shame it got buried under a bunch of moral grandstanding about how gross and icky cigarettes/pipes are and "I don't like it therefore it shouldn't be in the game" reasonings. Despite the fact that plenty of NPCs can be found casually lounging around with a pipe in their hand.
Welcome to FFXIV, we'll tolerate murder, genocide, subtle and not-so-subtle mentions of r*pe (shoutout to The Hole found in Sastasha, the very first dungeon of the game), alcohol use, and prostitution, but draw the line at the sight of a puff of smoke coming from a stick.
Hate smoking in RL, but I support adding smoke emote in game. It's particularly good for RP reason.
The problem here is that its currently a widely undesired action because of the health and addiction downsides. In such way RP shouldnt promote that behaviour either. If it is promoted ingame, then it might still cause people to start smoking 'because its cool'. Dont underestimate the influence of this.
In an 18+ game, i wouldnt care as much, but in this case the game is suitable for lower age, and promoted as such. Thats why im still against.
Sure, if a character was already smoking, they can at least preserve that, because having them smoking all of a sudden often feels strange.
Although i have to say metal gear solid series did an excelent job at that part (they were very lighthearted about it the entire time, but at the same time the entire story has a very big emphasis on its downsides, up to a state that in mgs4 it realy shows the health problems, which along with other causes make it even more amplified). But at the same time, they remained accurate (even in mgs5, although that story is incomplete). But i would say this is one of the very rare cases where the way they did this just worked very well. In too many cases devs just make the character stop out of nothing (which isnt realistic and would imply its not addictive even). But tahts why its good that devs at least arent making new characters heavy smokers.
SE: Smoking bad, m'kay?
Also SE: *puts in beer steins and a /toast emote*
Like I said, it's the little things that make me laugh, lol.
Kupo <3 I would love to toke on some magical kupo herb :)
Kupo <3 if somebody is getting upset over an emote like smoking or drinking you should have another discussion with yourself kupo <3
World is not all snowflakes and rainbows, people work they need some escape and dopamine. Let them have fun kupo <3
Sounds cool. If you hate the health implications, don't use it. It's 2022; nobody who smokes is laboring under the belief that it's good for them.
The emote needs to LOOP though. We have so many emotes in this game that should loop but don't. Like /read for example. Why do I read for 5 seconds and then immediately put the book away? It should loop. Imagine if we get like, a pipe smoking emote similar to Yotsuyu's movements, but you only smoke for 4 seconds and then you put it away. It'd be so bad lmao.
Anyway, I'm sure we'll get it soon. Maybe SE will partner with Marlboro for a Malboro themed cigarette adventure, and if you purchase a pack and send in the receipt you'll get a /smoke emote!
Smoking emote please, if you are worried about the health impacts just say it is not tobacco but something only found in FFXIV that has no negatively impacts in the flavor text.
its a FANTASY world, with magic that cures everything, if you get something from smoking in game, just esuna it, job done
Never gonna happen. The moment any tabaco company advertises in a game like this, they and SE will be sued to such insane state it wont be profitable. If smoking happens no company is allowed to be attached to it. Smoking advertisements are already illegal acros many platforms in many countries.
Coupled sales on that (even if internationaly) also are not allowed. Your package bought in country X, must then not be accepted when you are in country Y. Not just that, other players using the emotes in this case ALSO are then not allowed to have that rendered, because the coupled sale is still an advertisement mechanic. Even if there is no way for you to obtain it, it can still promote vpn usage to obtain the emote, and using that method get people to buy a pack.
The laws against advertising for any tabaco company are extremely strict, and in most cases go cross border. For example any USA show that also advertises towards EU users, without actively being shown in the EU, will still result in fines/bans for the company advertising. And it goes that far that it even applies the the parent company of those companies.
You can be sure that SE doesnt want to get into this mess. So the only real option would be having it obtainable though f2p and brandless. And potentialy still get fined.
We already have a toast emote with a keg of beef. We have cigars as housing items already same for alcohol sets. No offense but this makes little sense.
Also, yes this isn't the real world. If the consideration is young people we've killed thousands on thousands of people with little remorse in the game already. I'm sure a cig emote is the least of worries there.
I don't think thats a good idea to be really honest.
Why if I may ask? That aside, do people really feel an emote would glamorize the action? Does the drinking emote glamorize drinking? Sure you can say maybe they are not drinking booze, we can say they are not smoking a harmful substance. This seems like a weird hill for people to die on just because they dislike like it IRL. This game is not IRL.
It's not about what we think. It's about people who work at ratings think. And they've increased ratings for far less. If a character isn't portrayed as smoking in a negative way (by them being a villain), or if the act of smoking isn't explicitly viewed as bad (like having your character cough and cartoonishly throw it away), it can be perceived as glamourized.
For further examples, check out the Hays code. It's not the same, but it's similar in its execution: if the action exists, it must be portrayed as either negative or have connotations around it that show it's an immoral act, such as being associated to immoral characters.
Well sure we have very little say, it is still interesting to get the reasoning from players that are against the suggestion. Even if ratings were an issue it could be a bubble pipe, yet throughout the thread it appears even that portrayal could be seen as a glamourization of smoking.
Why is that the case for smoking and not drinking? Both could be argued as immoral acts and both.
Sure we will never get the answer.
Could also be sensibilities. Plenty of people frown upon tobacco and drinking included due to their impacts on peoples' healths. Now, while you can argue there can be benefits to alcohol (as there are in red wine, for example), those benefits only exist with moderation. Smoking has no benefit that exists even with moderation.
And plenty of people likely know someone who suffered or suffers from smoking-induced illnesses. Which contributes to the unpopularity.
That and the smoke kind of stinks x_x I just like it for the *aesthetic~*, but even I acknowledge an aesthetic can easily lead to harm.
Does not make much sense to me, but I can see where due to the sensitive nature may fuel a higher degree of ire and less tolerance.
Many seem to be in favor of a bubble pipe option so we can hope one day they add something akin to that as a gag type emote.
Though some appear to even be against that degree if portrayal.
I did read a recent study that does suggest that even moderate consumption of alcohol the risks may out weigh the benefits. Forgot the details of the study if I find it I will post it. Not sure what was the avg ABV consumed during the study.
I don't like drinking and prostitution. Can we delete dwarves and "those" npcs from Limsa's upper decks? You know, for sensibility's sake. :^)
Besides, if we are talking smoking then you are kind of being disingenuous with your arguments if you are lumping every form of smoking into cigarettes. Grown tobacco is a different beast than big name cigarettes that add a ton of stuff to the stick.
I mean, if smoking was completely abhorrent Yotsuyu wouldn't be pictured with a pipe. Wouldn't it be all or nothing with the people in charge of rating?
The thing is that drinking is more or less an adventurer staple in fantasy genres (where you go to a bar and such). In FF, it's more common to always find a bar, so it's really not uncommon to get a toast emote. Drinking in this game is more of a celebration than the act of drinking in itself, which coincides the social aspect of the activity where it has a morally upright usage. Heck, we even have miscellany with shaking and shooting champagne bottles - all indicating a cause of celebration. Drinking is not harmful in moderation and often seen as acceptable for celebration, but the same cannot be said of smoking.
Prostitution is not something you can take part of in this game, nor looked in a positive light. I mean, then again people can't tell if you use mods to get those emotes, but that's against the ToS so  It's not officially endorsed. The most this game offers is embrace & Dote, which are have more morally upright connotations as long as you're not using it in a creepy fashion (which at that point, you can be reported for harassment if used improperly).
I figure the reason why we don't have a smoking emote is because it falls under the same category as the aformentioned reason: lacks a morally upright connotation. Not exactly because it doesn't happen in game, but there's no societal standard for seeing it in a good light, and the WoL is supposed to be that role model people look up to.
