Make FFXIV more like FFXI and less like WoW!

It's always been this way. To be honest, I have made a single long time friend that I keep in contact because what point is there? I've played since the beginning of 2.0.
I mean I'm pretty social and all but they made where you don't have to, so why bother? I am fine with it.
That was a pro and con of the DF. I kinda like it so I can jump in and go but it's harder to make friends that way but no one wants to stand for hours trying to find a party.

Replacing the battle systems isn't going to make the Elemental Wheel suddenly "work" as anything but a "use X only in Y encounter" system.
Replacing the concept of the Elemental Wheel, different from its use in all prior FFs, is the only thing that will make it worthwhile system.

Yup..I met my boyfriend in FFXI for 6, almost 7 years now. I could never form a relationship like I did with him in XIV. I mean..I would never actively seek out romance in an online game.it just kind of happened. FFXI was very unique in its social aspects :)

maybe with a blm charge/hold down for spell like dragons dogma, would make button bloat for the elemental wheel work, but thatd require a whole change in the battle system, though i thought wanderers minuet shouldve worked like that for bards(keep the mobility, charge boost attack and fire after moving) then a key/mouse player just said "keyboard users would hate that" and i realized that system would be bad for that.

No forced grouping for me, thanks! I like knowing that my friends spend time with me because they like me, not because of some creepy totalitarian mutual co-dependency system. Didn't BRD, RDM, WHM and some others basically have their pick of the litter for groups? I'd hate to have to tolerate someone with too much sass simply because they're one of 10 guys with the job geared on my server. (You already kinda have to do this for Savage statics, with jobs like WAR and SCH...let's keep it out of everyday activities, shall we?)

If you're having trouble making connections in this game, "forcing" people to group with you isn't going to fix that. It might on the surface, but it'll be a connection totally devoid of any real meaning.

Incentives for grouping, like buffed exp for quest turn-ins or rare/more abundant drops from mobs? Sure, okay. More content revolved around flexible group sizes and low barriers of entry like Aquapolis? All for it. But as soon as this game forces me to play with some nyerk just to get even the most basic and tedious of things done...I'm outta here.

I'll disagree.

The real problem with FFXIV's endgame structure is that there's not enough of it. For example, the first tier of Alexander should have been a large raid instance with 7 or 12 bosses that would take a raiding guild 2 or 3 raid nights to clear instead of four corridors with one boss a piece. EX Primals should have bigger loot pools instead of just weapons and contribute to endgame progression in some way (currently they're this weird side thing). And there really should be more than just the two current extremes for content (story-mode that's too easy for most groups, or savage that is a ridiculous jump in difficulty for same).

I've been on both sides of that one. Hell, I stayed with FFXI for longer than I should have because of the people I knew there. It's easily proven that the more time spent on something, the more reluctant one is to leave.

I never said that, and it certainly isn't the case. Pankration's issue was that it was reliant on RNG (soul plates and relevant abilities being random), it was limited to one place in the whole world (this is a flaw it shares with Verminion), and was abandoned instead of being adjusted.

On that note, Verminion was implemented as something no one asked for: a RTS minigame shackled to the Gold Saucer instead of the Pokemon-inspired system some people wanted.

There are stories tied to FATEs, but unlike Campaign's singular objective, a lot of it is reliant on zone context (which helps in giving the world depth because it means stuff is happening even when you're not gracing everyone's lives with your presence). Giant slugs that want to eat the great tree, an Alla Mighan brigade that has turned to crime, assaulting a fort held by the dravanians, and so on. FATEs in concept are actually pretty good because it gives you an idea of what happens out in the zones without needing a questline to do so; the issue has been that the devs use them to try to stagger player progression by tying content to them (atmas, animus books, etc).

Besieged also succeeded in making it evident that MMO engines have limits that make such systems a pain. Besieged itself suffered from things like ridiculous lag, really pushed the number of objects and character models the game could display, often led to random disconnects and crashes. Basically what we saw here with Odin, but worse.

It was nice because it had few restrictions and was essentially free exp when everything went according to plan (specially for jobs that had a hard time getting parties), but there were issues.

Like I already said, there's a stark difference between dealing with the inconveniences that are already present and requesting that additional inconveniences be added.

When you start playing the game, you're either already aware or quickly find out what the existing inconveniences are, and can make the decision to either keep playing in spite of them or, if they're too much for you, go play something else.

Wish there were more open world dungeons and not just dungeons you could just run through with there not being any point. I miss zones with dangerous high level enemies that you have to either sneak past or fight through, but mounts and aetherytes invalidates this. Think about trying to get to Cloister of Flames in Ifrit's Cauldron in FFXI. Chocobo from Kazham through Yuhtunga Jungle, through Yhotar which was like a damned labyrinth even with a map. Then get to Ifrit's Cauldron. Then you need to sneak/invis past high level Bombs/Elementals and Goblins to get there, and some enemies aggro magic and were tough as hell to a level 60ish player.

Except EXP in FFXIV is mostly doled out in Dungeons which have pre-determined enemy placement and level-appropriate loot in chests. Along with auto-healing, auto-revival, leveling in FFXIV is seamless and easy. In FFXI if you leveled past your camp which had a narrow range of 2-4 levels, you gimped everyone's EXP and had to take a hike. Also, if you were undergeared, it didn't slow the party down, it CRIPPLED the party. If you had a 60% hit rate because you didn't skill-up your weapon or bring accuracy gear your weaponskills would miss and you wouldn't kill fast enough to maintain the EXP chains. In FFXIV, you can be 20 ilvls under the lvl for the dungeon and still be acceptable as long as you can dodge AoEs because everyone else will pick up the slack NP, also because the stat gains on equipment 1-50 are like +3-5 each piece, so having a few pieces from 20lv ago with +1 or +2 made no difference in performance (unless you were a tank and had gear with poor defense)

With how big the population is in comparison to FFXI, you are looking at a complete mess if the open world dungeon has any worth. Crowds of people fighting each other for claims. This has already showed to an extent with dailies with the beast tribes in 2.0. Which may I remind in a way are open world dungeons. We also have a revision of Diadem coming, in a way is an area you explore, so I would wait and see how that turns out.

I don't get why people think using sneak/invis. is fun. I don't remember anyone liking to use oils and powders except the people making and selling them. It was not fun dealing with that at all.

Having to deal with agro mechanics was a important part of why zones were the way they were and a part of what made the open world a challenge to traverse. Your most common paths were fairly safe but stray from them and you could be in a world of hurt.

Despite what you say the open world population wasn't much less than what you see logged into FFXIV on any server in a common day, the abillity to zerg-claim things is what causes the mob mentality you see in XIV. The games have totally different takes on open world content and it could only work in XIV in a set of new zones dedicated to such gameplay.

Agreed. It is the ability to just teleport instantly, run to wherever instantly...and just gung ho it lol. You could never do that in Aion, XI, L2, and so forth...shoot, even in 1.x. You had to carefully fight your way to the deep parts of said dungeon (even a full alliance of people could get easily overwhelmed) it is just all about being creative :)

I guess in the end though its about the money. While some of us would love more danger, the vast majority seem happy or content with the current trend. As a company, why risk making a hard game (Never played but I admit 1.0 looked fun to me, some tweaks to the system maybe but I enjoy what I saw) when you make a lot more money just copying what everyone else does. Sadly I think its reasons like that why some of my favorite mmos have been shut down, Shin megami Imagine and Wizadry online for example.

I can only think of one thing for them to bring over, and that is a more fleshed out end game. I don't hate alex, but I would rather see more than just a raid like alex. Since we are working on getting the second expansion most likely within the year, what did XI have for everyone to work on?

HNMs (world bosses), Dynamis (released in first exp and expanded in 2nd), Sky (first expansion), Sea, Limbus, BCNMs, KSNMs...

Tons of things to do. Most of these end game events would take a couple to few hours, but most people seem fine just dying to the same boss over and over for the same amount of time. Also take note how they continued to make old content relevant.

Personally, I feel the reward system should be handled before new content ideas because regardless of how good the content is, its dead if the rewards aren't worth it. Not to mention that ilvls are increased every 3-6 months so scaling will always be a questionable decision. The team just doesn't give themselves enough room to work with by making the ilvls so low between each type of content. Savage gear is pretty much dead after 6 months and replaced by the next dungeon pieces except weapons so people tend to settle for stuff that is 10-20 ilvls lower because its easier to acquire.

Because MMO's don't exist in a vacuum, it's worth paying attention to what other MMO's do even if it's only an example of what NOT to do in your own game. If a game does have something about it that is particularly good or works really well, there's nothing wrong with suggesting it. Adding a bit more danger and life to the open world areas of FFXIV and encouraging people besides gatherers to go around the various zones (which in the end is only at certain times because of unspoiled/legendary nodes) is not an inherently bad idea. I don't think the FFXI's method of doing that would work per se, but the concept itself of adding more danger to the various zones and giving people more reason to go back is something I could get behind.

I'm all for more reusing (and updating) textures from some of XI's armors. Usukane (Yes, please!)

More open world explorable areas. HW kind of dropped the ball on that, seems to be less zones (probably due to flight so I can kind of understand). Have some underground caverns and temples that aren't reduced to just dungeons (but could put entrances to said dungeons in them).

I find a lot of the people in these games struggle with that, so I don't think many would progress. As for me I love being social, it comes naturally and super easy to me. As an extrovert I'd love for more social content but this game really lacks that aspect..and the linkshells I am in really show that. 90% of the folks in this game I have come across are extremely socially awkward. I always feel bad for them but dunno how to help them..anyway, sorry to ramble but yea I am curious...

And anyway I wouldn't expect a game to help someone overcome their social issues. But who knows..anything is possible?

Because I still enjoy the social interaction when I chose to participate. That is the fundamental difference to me. When a game forces me to socialize, it often feels arbitrary or "fake" because many of us are there solely because we can't do whatever it is we're attempting without certain people. I certainly don't mind more social content-- like a less intense static. I just never want the game to force it on me because there are plenty of times we're I'm perfectly happy playing by myself. Might be my years of mostly playing single player RPGs or RTS games though. I'll admit, I can get oddly self determined. Like with crafting now. I want to make every bit of Ironworks because as my first foray into top tier crafting in this game, doing it mostly on my own felt like an accomplishment.

It isn't about not wanting social interaction, but more about it not feeling forced. Take dedicated raid groups for example. None of us are forced to play together, we're all just like-minded players with a particular goal we all want to achieve.

And didn't find it rude at all. You're not the first to ask me either. :D

This issue does greatly depend on the individual's interaction with it in the past. Some people got the good end and some didn't, so you're reasoning is justified. Being in hardcore linkshells wasn't always great since many had rules depending on the type of linkshell it was. For example, if it was one that did all kinds of events including HNMs, chances are they wanted you to only have one linkshell and for you to drop whatever you were doing to help if windows were open. Other types might be more loose like ones that focused on maybe dynamis/sea/sky. Loot determination was a huge deal as well. Some used point systems, some had leaders just decide on their own, etc etc. In many cases it was far from fair since you have several linkshells that just used people to help them make money or get relics while convincing the lower members clears and r/ex gear was what they truly wanted. Making it more sad, many of these leaders would milk as much as they could and just server hop to better linkshells since many high end linkshells didn't care so much about your rep as they did your gear. But again, everyone's experience with forced socialization in order to progress was probably different. Its just those types still existed.

The real difficulty is finding a middle ground, which for the most part I felt voidwatch kind of achieved more so than other forms of content in the game. You could group with pretty much any set of people, so no job was honestly useless unless there were just multiples of them and everyone got individualized loot, so no one could 'ninja' anyone and no one's time was wasted. Plus you could do it to level and get merits etc. Obviously there were many downsides even when they tried to adjust it years later since many mats were used for upgrades, such as people not wanting to run old ones to help people get certain key items and other ones were just down right obsolete, even the last one. All in all it was something that could be easily replicated here even though the mechanics would probably be different but the concepts could be the same, assuming they ever fix the alliance system.

I'd like to see FFXI's storylines and zones updated and recoated for FFXIV, just sell it as like an add-on pack and don't gate it like Heavensward. There's already an explanation on how it could happen, just needs to be expanded.

That's about all I'd want from FFXI to transfer.

If anything, FFXIV needs to be more like Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World. More horizontal progression, less grind and more player controlled progression. Enough of RNG based progression used exclusively to make content last longer without adding absolutely no value to the content itself. Make activities fun, not long lasting, and they will never die as valid content as they do now.

Which will never happen as each FF game is an entirely separate world from each other (apart from FFXII being set in Ivalice which first appeared as the world of FF Tactics, and a tongue-in-cheek and not-to-be-taken-seriously reference by Yoshinori Kitase that FFVII's Planet and X's Spira are in the same universe) - SE even stated this long ago that Hydaelyn has no connection to any other FF world:

idk about guild wars 2, but what it did have was stuff like self heals and sustainability and had a very loose roles system, which i did like. I dont think it needs to be much more like, but at least consider roles as a whole or this wonky class system or job/cross class but no real build on playstyle. Or hey new jobs theres a one that is in the same classification of another one, that is actually unique to the rest of the dps, lets make it different but the same. new healer? lets make it sort of work like one of our only 2 healers or the other, not at the blink of an eye its locked in combat, new tank? edgy, pops cooldowns and has nice animations. also...its one combo gets rejected by dragon kick, it has a gap closer!(like all melee dps had anyway in 2.0)

She could breach the dimensions (again) and bridge the gap. I think an Abyssea here in 14 would go a long way in restoring continued playability. Though they really need to add horizontal progression as well. The nonstop gating everything behind caps and rng is just too nut crushing at this point

Enough of RNG based progression used exclusively to make content last longer without adding absolutely no value to the content itself. Make activities fun, not long lasting, and they will never die as valid content as they do now.

If you like GW2 then play it, for what it is. Play FFXIV for what it is. From what I have seen, making FFXIV 'like' GW2 would destroy the game as we know it.

In the end, every way something can be 'like' something else is going to be through specific elements, additions, and design philosophies, and only then the impressions they create. Neither game in question is going to be overridable with the other. Nor does any game have identity separably than its parts. Even what you took as gestalt is consequent to numerous small decisions, additions, and surrounding releases (be those developer talks, trailers, concept art, player videos, fan fics, or whatever else). Those are worth looking at other games for.

Of course these things shouldn't be taken verbatim, but is it so wrong to look at a the things GW2 or any other MMO is doing and ask oneself "why does this appeal to me, and how could FFXIV reach a similar appeal while progressing its own development in its own way?" That's what these make X more 'like' Y requests really come down to if that discussion is allowed even the tiniest bit of real conversation.

Yes. There's going to be a reboot of FF11, and SE is working with Nexon (Oh dear god).

This game is already destroying itself slowly though.
Also it's not like it'll be a first time the game drastically change as we knew it if something like that happens. 1.0 and ARR were completely different.
