Viera don't have any tails at all.

If Yugiri is a new race then it's likely to be the dragon-like one cause the devs kept talking about it in interviews and such.

Sadly thats what Yoshida wanted. Some sort of beastmen race or non-human, simply to create more of a variety (as most MMORPGs would offer)

1. It is confirmed there will be a new race introduced.

2. The story that came with Lady Yugiri sets the stage very much for the race being from her land.

3. Lady Yugiri is clearly a new race we have not seen, and is clearly not a bunny girl.

I took this pic in game, from the story. From this pic you can see clearly, Yugiri has a scaled tail (like some kind of serpent or dragon kin), also she has two large protrusions from her head that could be ears or horns possibly?

In anycase unless Viera grew snake tails, I doubt it is the bunny girl most people seem to think she is.

Since Yugiri has a scaled tail I am thinking she is a dragon/human hybrid type of race and those are horns on her head.

FFXIV has too many pure human type races so it would be nice to have a more non human looking one.

Anyone here wondering why a bunny race would have a Rat Tail?

Actually she might be draconic. She mentioned hiding her features to not cause an uproar in Eorzea.
Given that dragons are at war with Ishgard, being draconic will be a good reason to do so.

I was digging through some old live letters the other day and came across this information.

Q: In the 3rd Players’ Poll, there was a question about new races and clans. What kind of race will be implemented and when? Also, will we see Viera or beastmen/lizardmen?

A: The Viera are extremely popular amongst our overseas players, so we’re really thinking hard about this one. We’d also been considering a dragon-blood tribe – something more beastman or reptilian, a direction that we haven’t really tried in a FINAL FANTASY before.I guess I was leaning towards what in Japan would be considered a Western design, but our North American players have also been pretty vocal in their requests for the Viera race. We would like to look into it. You can assume it would be for an expansion pack.

Maybe this is smoke and mirrors and yugiri isn't actually part of a new playable race. In fact, most domans from the cutscenes look normal to me, so what if she is just cursed or deformed or something, and not actually a different race. I kind of skimmed the cutscenes so I'm not sure if she ever mentioned her race hiding their faces in Eorzea or if it was just herself that was hiding her face.

I would of liked to see these types of races but it's wishful thinking.

This does make it clear that we could be seeing a draconic/reptilian race. Cool. I already have a dragoon in the making that I wanted to be a draconic race to start! Yay! Still has his fantasia! woot!

Maybe the new race is Burmecian from Final Fantasy IX?
They fight with lances like a dragoon and they look like reptilian...? They also have long ears and a tail

I created a race suggestion thread a while back, that was one of the suggestions.
Then some uber fans came in and said "UHHH YOSHIDA ALREADY SAID NO MORE CROSS BREEDS! NO MORE ANIMALS!"

They also said some crap how Cyborgs would mess up the lore.

Which would make sense of her wanting to keep her features covered with the Ishgardian war with Dragons. A Draconion humanoid race appearing could be met with fear due to said reasons. Believing they are allied with the Dragons. Whereas keeping that hidden will allow her to show that she and her race isn't through actions prior to the unveiling.

Not going through all 22 pages to see if it's been said but Yugiri's tail is not a bunny tail.

Definitely rat or lizard in nature.

Just because something is fantasy or speculative fiction, doesn't give a free pass to be internally inconsistent. Magic isn't real, but it operates under an internally consistent set of rules in this game. When you're world building and writing you have too keep things consistent, which is what the devs try to do. Internal consistency/cohesiveness is what separates the bad stories form the good. So yes, the devs need to respect the established lore because it's part of good writing and a vital part of the genre.

Adding cyborgs to FFXIV is like if Tolkien decided that throwing in steampunk androids halfway into The Two Towers would make the story cooler, or if they added fairies to Star Trek. You don't do that when writing fiction, it violates the established internal rules of the universe that the writer crafted.

At first I though Yugiri was a Viera because of her ears but after seeing her tail I discarded that possibility, she's most likely a lizard type wich I hope they don't screw up since most of the female lizard type races I see in MMO's look horrible.

I just hope they add two new races in the expansion since it will be really dissapointing to be wating so long for Viera and just getting this lizard thing race only. :(

I figured she was a Bangaa or similar. The ears and tail fit, though the face shape is suspect.

To me it's pretty clear by now that they will be very similiar to Miqo'tes and with reptilian tails and ears/horns (Yugiri does even have the same animation set as female Miqo'tes).

Yugiri having the same animation set as female Miqo'tes can be attributed to the fact that the new race (if there's going to BE a new race) is still in development, and they haven't produced new animations for that race. We can't assume that Yugiri's animations are going to be what the finished race is going to have. Making Yugiri was easy. That said, I think you're right. If they do add a lizard race (or any new kind of animal race), it will probably look human-with-animal-bits, just like the Miqo'te, rather than anything flat-out monstrous-looking, like the Banga or Seeq.

Yes, the new race will almost surely have a new unique animation set, but I was pointing out that the choice of using Miqo'te animations might be more well thought that it could seem: since SE must have already had in mind the race base design for a very long time and since Doma uses Ninjas as its main military force, it could very well be that Domans will be light and agile humanoids, just like Miqo'tes.

Sorry for reviving kind of an old thread, I just really want to throw in my two cents. :P

I personally think the new race is an Armadillo-like humanoid. I say this because of the plate/armor/scale on her tail, and the tuft of hair just at the base of her tail. Much like an armadillo:
