You have Tanks and healers (even Male Roes....shudder) running around in bikinis, Speedos and booty shorts. I'm pretty sure that at this point the "I don't want to see tanks wearing healer dresses" line of reasoning flew out the window long ago.

Does anyone know how the system works with reacquiring “unique” items you’ve turned to glamours? I’d like to put the Gambler’s Boots in there for setting up plates, but maybe also keep the actual item on hand, so to do that I’d need to be able to repurchase the ‘unique’ item once I’ve converted my current one. Which I might be able to if the game doesn’t think I have it any more. Can I do that?
Maybe they should have done it so the image of the item gets stored, and the item binds to you but doesn’t vanish from your inventory. Then you could choose whether to discard it or not.
Has anyone tested out the plates with the Fashion Police game in gold saucer? Does it work or do you need the actual item on hand?
When I first read that the glamour plates overwrote existing glamours on whatever gear you had equipped, I was dismayed. My first thought was "well, this is dumb", just like the thread title implies. Then after I let it sit for a while, I realized that was because I had in my head an idea of what the glamour dresser was supposed to do, and it didn't match what the design actually intends. The system is made to make it easier for you to reapply your glamour without consuming a bunch of glamour prisms and without glamour gear taking up space in your inventory. That's all. Once you wrap your head around that, it starts to make sense and the idea of it is actually appealing (once they can get rid of the limitations).
I'm still hesitant to use it, because I don't want to put gear from the mog station or stuff that's difficult to get into the dresser in case I want it later for something else. I've put in my level 70 job specific gear (since you can just buy it from the Calamity Salvager), but I'm hesitant to make or use glamour plates with it because I'd need to re-glamour my generic caster outfit after switching back from summoner to red mage, and I don't want to put some of those items for the "generic" set into the glamour dresser at this point.
It kind of sucks because I'd sure like to start using this system and see how it feels out (and free up more armoury/inventory space) but the limitations make me really hesitant to do so. I'd be so much more comfortable with this if you could take things back out...
I'll just explain my reasoning through these pics https://imgur.com/a/JMfO1
IDK if it works on on that exact item, but you can def use it to apply looks onto plates.
The temple knight gear is actually able to be put in the dresser. Someone bought it for me but I'm not that wild about it since it's very... white.. so I just stuck it in the dresser. Maybe I'll use it on my paladin later. But there ARE things on the mogstation you can stuff in the dresser. So be careful. It seems like anything that was a past seasonal reward is limited to the armoire though.
edit: I should also clarify I did try to put it in the armoire first, which did not work.
it is completely wrong
1. those items will not go in the armor
2. it lets you put those paid items in the dresser.
you do not think it is convoluted???
in 1996 maybe id agree with you,
this is 2018, having to do that is not acceptable.
(pretty sure games that old didn't have nonsense like that on top of things)
I really don't. I'm not trying to be contrary either. Once I figured out how the system works. it's obvious to me what the system can do and how to use it to achieve what I want. There are limitations I am not pleased with, but we've been given assurances these will be addressed (once again. I am aware they've lied before).
So lets discuss what systems are out there:
GW2 : This is the ideal. Pick something up and use/dis it? You now just HAVE that appearance. You can change it to whatever color you want , whenever you want. Unlocking gear and dye is account wide. Most gear has 3+ color channels.
Downsides:
Changing appearance has a catalyst you can technically earn.. but very slowly. If you like changing looks a lot you're going to end up spending real money on appearance change charges.
Armor type limitations, you can only wear light if you're light, heavy if you're heavy etc. Cross class appearance isn't really a thing.
Colors are RNG as hell. Earning them through gameplay is either super random or super ingame currency heavy for primary colors
A lot of the coolest looking gear is in their real money shop, admittedly you can slowly trade ingame money for real money currency.
WoW: .. I have no idea, I left before appearance changing became a thing. I hear they have a really cool system that took 8 years to get right and there was something of an early attempt that went belly up and nobody uses it. All hearsay though. I stopped before MoP.
Wildstar (this may have changed, I left before it went f2p) :
you have 6 outfits, You can change at anytime between these. Dyes are unlocked and you can dye things at dye NPCs using any color you want as long as you have unlocked it.
Downsides: outfits use the actual gear. This isn't a log it's just alternate storage
Dyes use money every time you want to dye something , popular colors are expensive to use and are RNG to attain or highly expensive to purchase for in-demand colors like black.
cross class appearances are not a thing
Destiny2 : there's no such thing as a costume, you look like the gear you're wearing. You can find something you like and add mods to kinda adjust it to what you want but if it's an exotic you're stuck. No Cross class outfits. This is understandable though since this is more of an FPS and silhouettes are important in PVP.
Secret world: Appearance has nothing to do with stats. Gear is all "talismans". Once you own an appearance item you can change your outfit whenever you're out of combat wherever you are. Since there are no set classes there are no limits to who can wear what.
Downsides:You pay real money for most of the good appearance gear. You can build up the real money currency with a subscription but that's still paying real money for it.
you cannot dye things, you need to purchase a different color if you want another color. There is some serious appearance gear bloat.
Everything is weird in it's own way and has it's own problems. Wanting things from other games is understandable, but learning another games systems isn't that hard and really isn't something I'd complain about.
Start by adding some things you can easily purchase or reaquire, to get a feel for how it works.
I've tentatively used it to set up a plate for my machinist glamour, which I'm currently leveling and was glamouring with gear I was happy to put in the dresser. It's certainly a good easy way to reapply the whole costume at once! The only disadvantage would be that I don't think you can apply glamours "in advance" so it looks right as soon as you equip it.
It's definitely a bit nerve-wracking (moreso that I'd ever expect to feel while going through inventory menus!) that you have to decide whether you're happy with not having it accessible otherwise. Right now it's a bit of a thought process for each piece.
I experimented a little and made a plate for my lowbie astrologian using only armoire items so I could try it. Once you wrap your head around the idea that it's just the old system but entire outfits done at once and with no glamour prism cost, it's not bad at all! Once they've been able to relax restrictions on where/when you can apply them, increased plate/item limits, and allowed the system to be used for squadron members, I will probably feel a lot more comfortable throwing the majority of my glamour gear in there and making sets for my casters.
Sure this is not a perfect solution but it's a step in the right direction. I finally can reapply my outfit with the push of a button and don't have to get the right glamour crystal and color to use each time I get a new armor piece.
Maybe it's a bigger deal in the endgame, that I don't know yet. It works fine for me so far.
Just sucks that we can only change the plates in citys.
This is how I read your post:
"Everything has down sides so it makes it ok and we should accept the shortcomings of a system no matter how big"
I do not think so, There is no reason games in the late 90's and early 00's should be outperforming a modern game in its second expansion in 2018.
This system is downright unacceptable with the money we give them. They do not put enough money back in the game, that is why we have this nonsense.
That would be a viable solution!...
I could make everyone look like standard NPCs in my own game while the rest of players can have whatever look they want in their own clients!...
Lift glamour restrictions = Option to make other players wear standard outfits.
Win - win in my opinion and the only way I'd support it!...
I knew from the very beginning it wasn't going to be anything similar to what people were expecting. I wasn't too excited for this. If there were more than 10 plates then that'd be great.

Who thought this system was a good idea?
i would love if i could combi armor from other sets or change a BWS Glove to a "No class" Glove.... :( maybe sometime
It seems you've misunderstood me then. I was pointing out that other "current" games are still having similar problems but in different areas.
The system has shortcomings, we should ask to have them corrected. Limited space, limited plates and limiting areas for implementation, inability to directly apply to certain NPC's we control. Most of these have promises to be fixed. I hope SE follows through on those.
However for this game it is working and it isn't a bad system once you've learned it.
I'm not sure what you mean by outperforming, but FFXIV is one of the prettiest games I have played and I keep coming back to it for the world they've created. Aesthetically and technically I enjoy all the characters and locales. Story wise I care about most of the NPC's I've been introduced to and I enjoy the gameplay (IMPORTANT) as well. These are the most important things to me. This is what I PAY for and what I expect to be payed attention to when I play a RPG.
You're constantly harping on how this one system , that works well even if it's a little complex and not as robust as it needs to be for everyone, should catch up and we need to raise torches and crucify them because goshdarnit we are paying for this stuff and this is UNACCEPTABLE! (oh god I hate that word. 16 years in customer service made me HAAAATE that word).
I disagree. Wholeheartedly I disagree.
I've been playing this game for 8 years and slowly but surely they have been improving it.
There have been failures (1.0, diadem) and badly implemented ideas (abuseable limited housing) . But I'm not seeing the irredeemable part of this particular addition and nothing you have said has even made me think twice.
If anything, actually getting hands on it has assuaged many fears I DID have.
where?
All i keep hearing is "server limitations" so sorry of being skeptical when they let us down time and time again. This is the second expansion, a modern game? I stand what I said, unacceptable, I do not care if you hate the word. I guess it may be a good idea to advise you not to play bravery default.
Speaking of, this relays my feelings nicely:
https://youtu.be/Wk_QyPykxZA
If this was 2.0, i would be on your side, this is 4.2 though, on a modern game, 2018, times change.
I still stand by what I say. the glamour system in ff14 is pretty good. not only is it good, they made it even more efficient with this patch by eliminating the need for specific glamour prisms. with glamour plates I can use a glamour prism on a piece of armor once and can apply it as many times as I want, that's not only more efficient, but economical. sure I'm probably not gonna put rare loot in the dresser, but the old system is still in place, and it's not like glamour pieces have much use outside the dresser anyway.
the glamour dresser and plates aren't what I wanted them to be, but I'm not gonna say SE failed just because they didn't meet my specific expectations.
It has NOTHING to do with meeting expectations. It fails atm because it fails, it is a pre-alpha state, something I expect to see in 1.0 or 2.0, not 3.0 +. This is the result when you are not getting an AAA game funded properly. It is hardly functional, all these limitations? those exists because it is pre-alpha, showing its dated, not a full release idea in the second expansion. It should be way more refined this point.
Heck its own game, ffxi, has more refined glam system and inventory management then this one does.
pre-alpha? I don't think you understand what pre-alpha means. the system works as intended, it just doesn't live up to people's expectations. and again the old glamour system is not only still in place, but was improved with this patch.
it's also not fair to compare this to ff11 either considering that game has been out for over 15 years and probably runs on a very different engine.
I think people's complaints about the glamour toilet are based entirely from what they wanted this system to be, and not what it actually is.
People wanted a way to have different glamour for every combat and crafting job and this doesn't give you enough plates to do that. Maybe it will someday, but right now that's not what this system does. However, it does let you cast the same glamours over and over freely, which allows you to change your glamour more often and possibly keep your glamour intact when you upgrade your gear. Also, you can glamour the entire contents of your armoire with no prisms required or anything having to be flushed into the toilet forever, so if you want to dress up in seasonal event gear for various events you can easily throw some on a plate and freely glamour it on.
It does need work, there's no good reason we can't change glamour everywhere we can change gear sets. And the 200 item limit is going to be too low, that or the inability to remove things needs to change.
I honestly thougth that the plates would be more like the wardrobe in rift. There you have a lot different ensembles which you can save and with one single click you can change that ensemble to be your recent glamour..You just need to save the old look as one too if you want it back and then you can switch inbetween any of them with just one click everywhere you are..or you can simply have one set and click onto the glamour slot (since gear and glamour can have extra slots) and with another click change the look of the glamour to whatever you want, even from something that is not from your role. No need for items like prism, no certain place that you need to be and if you swap gear out of it the glamour will still stay since they are different slots.
Its easy and on top of that has a glamour log too so you can just collect every single item in this game..
And then we got the "new" system in FF14 which is just confusing, has a limit on both plates and in the dresser and destroys your gear...also it takes away the dye.
This ist truly just bad and needs lots of rework for me to touch it..why not make a good system from the very beginning? I would have waited till 5.0 for that..
It's a complicated system trying to simplify things without adding too much data load on the back end.
While I agree with the distaste for the "destroyed" items, until/unless you hit that 200 cap (before it gets boosted, hopefully within a patch or two), you don't really lose out on much. Some, granted, and if those were functions you use frequently, by all means, disregard the dresser.
But, trying to understand it from a developmental perspective, I kinda get the call for destroying the item. For example:
1. Add any item to dresser. Copper Ring, let's say.
2. Use Copper Ring in Plate 1
3. Apply Plate 1 to currently equipped gear, glamouring Copper Ring onto whatever you have on
4. Remove Copper Ring from dresser, proceed to discard/sell ring.
Now you've run into a case of trying to get rid of an item that has been glamoured. I never used the old glamour system much, so I don't know how it handles that situation, but for a system meant to streamline this making it more accessible for beginners, maybe they just wanted to avoid the hassle that would cause, assuming it wouldn't outright break things.
It's easy to be upset/frustrated with the restriction, but buried somewhere in the system, there's a logic to why it needs to be that way, surely. Unless you really just want to believe they arbitrarily decided "No, you can't have any of these items back."
I gotta laugh at that one,yes I played Bravely Default and I HATED that character for always saying that word. Like a whiny customer.
Times do change, new systems have to be introduced and iterated. This looks like the beginning of something much more workable than the "here use your inventory to manage something that only needs to track appearance" system we have presently.
They've said as much in their liveletters and in interviews that they want to later have these systems useable on NPCS and that depending on information gathered they're hopeful it can be expanded.
Would you rather they kept this to themselves till it was absolutely polished? Give us the finished one MONTHS from now and even then untested on an active player base and possibly buggy as hell?
..or you can be grateful we get to play with it now and mitigate some clutter.
yeah the system isn't perfect, but it's already an improvement in some ways. people sure are complaining a lot about something they didn't know about a month ago lol.
honestly, even if it met the expectations people have now I'm sure people would find a reason to complain about it.
Can I glamour cross class finally? There's more than a few, say, monk items that I would like to wear for a healer glamour for example. Did they unlock that with the glamour plates or is it still role restricted?
unfortunately no class restrictions apply but it does allow classes that share gear (tanks, healers ,casters the sorts) to have sepurate glams for each class so in theory you can have the summoner artifact gear glammed on your summoner the red mage artifact gear on your red mage and the black mage artifact gear on your black mage. while they all share the same gear.
I havn't checked yet if you have to be in a city state to apply it or if once you set the plate it saves
I know that's the idea, but it's still difficult to make it work in my case. I have many different sets saved (definitely more than plates would allow), and many of them share some items. So I'd be converting some items to glamour while leaving other items out, and then, when I'm planning a set, I'd have to use glamour prisms for some parts and a Plate slot for other parts, and I could only plan it in the inn-room. No longer will I be able to go to the marketplace/equip vendors and try on different combinations that could use some of the items I turned into glamours, for I can no longer access them outside an inn room (as far as I know). So I'd also have to think hard on what kind of items I might want to keep at hand in the far future, and what items I might not mind turning into glamours for a limited use, and it's all just too crazy and overcomplicated xfgdfgdhhhjjfcjfjfkj kg
tldr; I think I'll keep my items on me ;;
You know what? I'm willing to accept the whole destroyed item aspect if the following concessions are made:
- Mirage plates are doubled, if not tripled.
- Mogstation items can be stored in the Armoire.
I would also prefer if certain dyes could remain persistent when stored or something so we wouldn't lose rare ones on stuff in the Armoire but the above two are far more of an issue. Granted, the latter could be solved if this system acted like an overlay on top of the existing prism based system in lieu of deleting your previous glamour entirely.
With the consolidated prisms and how easily obtainable they are now, anything that doesn't address actually issues like jobs being unable to have unique looks is fundamentally pointless. I have over 500 prisms. I can change my glamour on the fly hundreds of times before that stock pile depletes. And considering how little use FC seals generally have, I'll replenish it long before running out. Basically, the dresser barely does enough to warrant its existence. SE needs to stop releasing beta tests unless they specifically mention the system isn't finished. We've had numerous examples were things rotted due to them implementing something prior to it functioning properly, only for them to desperately try to renew our interest later. Complaints are entirely deserved because right now, the dresser has too many negatives to outweigh the few decent positives.
The one feature this thing really needs above all else is the ability to sort/filter items by job/restriction.
After taking in how the new glamour system works, and trying to figure out the reasonings for certain decisions, I think as it is now, there is 2 things that is required to make it usable (not perfect, as we would like, but at least usable).
1. Ability to include an inventory item to a plate. It could take a prism every time you save a plate, it would actually cost just the same as clamouring a job gear was before, now you just glamour the plate.
2. Have exactly as many glamour plates as there is gearsets. Currently we have as many gearsets as there is jobs + some amount, 10 I think.
The former change shouldn't really strain the system any more than it currently is. People would still store majority of hard to get gear in retainers, and use them on glamour plates when they will. That way the limited glaour store could be used as sort of "favourite" list, to some amount reasoning the limited space. The latter change would add some strain but would actually make the system usable. Oh, and of course, ability to use plates everywhere. I'm ok with the creation of them restricted to piece of furniture. But they should be possible to apply every time you can switch gearset/job.
Edit. Oh, and 3. Thing, ability to add "clear glamour" to any spot in any plate. That would give flexibility to either create a plate that totally clears your glamour, or use it to just some spots to bring out the current real look of the gear in certain plates. With that too I think it would be ok if it ate dispel prisms when that plate was saved, as my suggestion to be able to use inventory items for plate would use up glamour prisms.
