That's my point. Monks are being overlooked because they have the second highest melee damage. The catch is brotherhood is not that strong, not enough to close the gap to Samari. So, Drg will get the attention because it's the lowest DPS whole providing Littany, piercing, and dragonsight buffs.

Check logs, DRG is about 120 behind mnk on Lakshmi and 265 behind mnk on Susano. Considering the piercing alone is worth a least 140 to BRD/MCH, it's already close to monks level for Lakshmi. Then Littany on a group of 18,500 less drg to 15,800 and you get a value around 184 DPS vs MNK brotherhood around 90. Comes out to monk Lakshmi 210 ahead less Drg buffs 324 and MNK actually lower than the Drg for group damage on the fight. For Susano, monk ahead 355 less drg buffs 324 and MNKs ahead 31. Keep in mind I didn't even factor in dragoon sight, while weak and jankey, it is still a small rdps buff.

TLDR MNK rdps is in the same boat as DRG.

Notes: Removed Drg damage from raid on Littany because they are have it applied as own DPS. Used 50th and 75th percentile and not a significant change in DPS gaps. Fights are annoying to both drg and monk stacks. Piercing is more than 5% due to how raid buffs compound and boss armor works, but used 5% for simplicity (Assume BRD at 2800 DPS)

I like Riddle of Earth.

Your example from Lakshmi is poor for a number of reasons. First and foremost, there's no need to disengage there so there's no need for a refresh of GL3. Secondly, RoE doesn't mitigate damage at all and Monk isn't squishier than the other Melee jobs so it wouldn't need the mitigation anyway.

Riddle of Earth just needs to go and Perfect Balance needs its cooldown reduced. That's all there is to it.
My only suggestion (for Riddle of Earth) would be to reduce the cooldown to 30s (from 60s) and the duration of RoE and Earth's Reply to 10s each. That way it can be used more often to mitigate mechanics and refresh stacks.

But yeah, those elemental tackles don't make much sense.

It's bad to refresh GL3 because, again, you have to take damage to receive the refresh and boss's like to take their sweet time when they jump.

Your Lakshmi example is poor. Secondly, you don't receive any mitigation from Riddle of Earth until you actually get hit and there wouldn't be a need for mitigation anyway since Monk is exactly as surviveable in Fists of Fire as any other DPS.

Riddle of Earth is a terrible skill and it's sheer button bloat. There's no reason for it to exist. They should remove it from the game ASAP and just reduce PB's cooldown to 60 seconds.

I'd like it more if using it immediately extended GL and wasn't contingent upon gaining earth's reply to do so... Which the tool tip is rather misleading about.

It's not a good action to give someone at level 64: That's the problem. Past level 60 I feel like I just get stuff that belongs in the level 30-45 range. Compared to other jobs MNK has felt so disappointing to level I certainly won't be putting any more time into it and, flaws in all, I really enjoyed it from 1-50.

I must have been misreading RoE. I could have sworn there was some initial mitigation. Seems silly that the mitigation only activates after being hit, then disappears when switching back to the useful fist stance. At least there's the usual 5% mitigation for Fists of Earth, I guess.

It probably is a poor example. Would it have slightly better use during Divine Doubt? Getting hit by others should activate Earth's Reply, unless the confusion effect disallows on-hit procs?

They should, but they probably won't. It's probably here to stay, so the best we can hope for is they tweak it into being more useful. Like putting the mitigation on the base Riddle of Earth, and have Earth's Reply just refresh GL each time you're hit.

There are multiple examples were I found Riddle of Earth useful. I even found it useful in the omega raids. I can't understand why some of you want to get rid of something like this. When it come to tackle mastery I understand but leave the riddles alone.

The initial mitigation comes from Riddle of Earth putting us into Fists of Earth which has that 10% damage reduction.

I have a love/hate relationship with Riddle of Earth but I love the idea behind an ability to maintain GL stacks. The reason I have this love/hate relationship is because there have been many times where I activate Riddle of Earth but lose GL before taking damage. Also, it is super clunky to have this three-step process of activating Riddle of Earth - taking damage - then reactivating Fists of Fire.

Firstly, remove the Fist Stances and turn Fists of Fire into a trait much like they did with Ninja with their Dripping Blades traits. With our Fist Stances gone the Riddles begin to make a little more sense and be a little more user-friendly. With no more stances to bounce between we no longer have the aforementioned three-step process for maintaining GL through Riddle of Earth and getting back into the fight.

My suggestion for Riddle of Earth would be that activating it refreshes the GL timer and grants us both the 10% damage reduction from the Fists of Earth and the 10% damage reduction from Earth's Reply upon activation. This can maintain the theme that Earth = damage reduction. Then, for Earth's Reply, when we take damage or deal damage we lose the effect of the damage reduction buff and GL is refreshed.

This change means if we take damage under the effect of Riddle of Earth we get the refresh. Good for small jump phases.
If we don't take damage under the effect of Riddle of Earth we have the fallback of being able to do damage to get the same effect. This means no more intentionally standing in stuff we can avoid just so we can keep GL up.
Giving Riddle of Earth the initial effect of refreshing GL, I feel, is the most needed and most obvious buff this ability can receive. This means that the benefit of Riddle of Earth is always the same no matter where we are in our combo chain when a transition happens. Currently if a boss jumps for an AOE mechanic before we can Demolish, Snap Punch or Rockbreaker we are far more likely to lose GL than if we get that last attack off and the boss transitions when we have a full timer.


bottom line, two things need to be changes ASAP in regards to Monk and Riddle of Earth.
1) Fists of Fire needs to become a trait.
2) For any Riddle of Earth change to be effective, be it my suggestion or any other, it absolutely must refresh the GL timer. Losing GL and taking damage a few seconds later is what I am seeing to be the greatest source of irritation from this ability. There is no reason why the benefit of this skill swings massively depending on where we happen to be in our combo chain. Giving it the initial refresh makes this ability have a solid, flat, predictable outcome and that means we can make fa better use of it.

This is absolutely the wrong way to handle it. If there are two melee and both get targeted there's more than enough space for both to stay in melee range. Hell, even if there's 3 melee, the damage on it is low enough that if all 3 get targeted one can just stand on the tank.

That's not to say there aren't fights where RoE is still useful, as susano's ultimate, -100g in v.2 and the head in v.4 are great places to use it. I still have hopes that they'll make it better, but won't be mad if they don't.

Riddle of Earth is alright, it has its uses. It's not something you're going to use in every fight but when it comes in handy it's great to have, although reading this thread people seem to be using it kind of oddly (Lakshmi? No). If SE buff Brotherhood and alter Riddle of Fire to not reduce our speed I think Monk will immediately be in a much better place in terms of how the job feels to play - notwithstanding chakra relying so heavily on RNG, which I think is a terrible idea but they've dug themselves into a hole with it now.

They really need to sit themselves down and have a proper think about what direction they want to take Monk, the class is clearly languishing without a proper role to play since they arbitrarily gave our identity to Samurai.

At this point with the idiotic changes they made to MCH I'm just glad they didn't make MNK worse with 4.05.

I do not know much about MNK but after reading this, I would like to learn more and understand is wrong with the job. This was well written and gave me a deep overview of the job and what's happened to the job. Hope SE takes a better approach to fixing the job and really examines what's truly going on with the job.

Riddle of Fire feels great to use in PvP now, no more slow down. Why they didn't make this a PvE change as well I am at a complete loss.

There are threads and threads on these forums, countless thread on Reddit about the sorry state of Monk and every single one of them has been met with absolute silence. Yoshi says "just try it in Savage".
Well, I cleared O1 and O2 last night and guess what. RoF still sucks, one ilm punch, arm of the destroyer and tackle mastery are still completely useless. Chakras aren't exactly filling any voids.
What did they expect?

In saying this, seeing the absolute mess they've made of smn and mch, I'm reluctant to continue to ask for changes. They're not listening to the community and they're blind to what Raiders are trying to tell them. It seems the devs are not playing these classes themselves to understand what's wrong. At least Monk is at a playable state even if half its skills are just useless bloat.

Just found this thread.. Great post OP. I wish I could articulate things as well as you did, even if the first thing people did was complain (be it humor or not).

Really hope they fix Monk. I kinda stopped playing when I hit 68.. Trying to finish the story so I can just gather...

Honestly this could just be because it enabled them to clear ASAP.. Continuing their main to get to the raid as fast as possible and using the job they are (probably) pretty darn good at.

That aside. Monk clearing raid isn't surprising.. It's damage is still like 2nd best? DPS and dedication aren't a issue, as some are dedicated and its DPS isn't the worst in the world.

I still don't understand the argument about how Monks in Savage was related to gameplay. The entire problem with Monk skills in both expansions is that many of them felt far too situational to be practical. Forbidden Chakra, Tornado Kick, and Riddle of Earth are examples of this. Stormblood continued this trend and did nothing to fix it. Could it have been good? Yes. Forbidden Chakra and Tornado Kick should have been cooldown based like Elixir Field. That way they would have been more practical.

At this point though, I feel that the entire chakra system and Greased Lightning system is just broken in Stormblood. Chakras are too luck dependent to trigger. Riddle of Fire and Greased Lightning just contradict one another.

they had a few way to make the chakra system work, like by example each time you refresh gl with a gcd, you get a chakra a bit like a combo system a la wow.
make grease lightning free of damage boost, like this all we loose from the stack loose is not the damage but the speed. it will still be a punishement but will be far simpler to add new mechanic to the grease lightning.
tornado kick was a nice idea, on the paper only, the trouble is loose GL is too much a punishement. the idea behind was nice but sadly i still think the gl consumer need to be a ranged attack.
purification, let's face it, he did loose all his point with the recent change, why not change it into a skill that consume the 5 chakra for give back 3 gl instantly? you reduce the cd to 60 and it will give tornado kick the possibility to be a skill that will be usefull.

the three fist are a mess too, as monk we will remain most of the time into fist of fire, because we are dps and that what we need. a few idea:
- fist of fire get most of GL damage buff instead of +5% it can go at +15% while the rest is added via a trait like the ninja. (you will understand after why do this)
- fist of earth still reduce the damage, but you add the capacity to ignore positional while used and no boost of damage. (that why it's important to strip gl of his damage boost, like this fist of fire will be the main dps stance and fist of earth a stance for situation where you can't match the positional and solo)
- fist of the wind, that the tricky one, all of this fist is mobility, you can't give mobility to that skill without make it broken... in another thread i had think to give it a sort of shunpo, allowing the monk to teleport with each gcd skill. but that too much... and when i say teleport it was only if the target is in 10 yalms. you still loose the 15% of damage for fist of fire, but sadly it's too much mobility... i don't have a good idea for this one.

anyway, the advantage to strip gl of his damage boost is to allows them to play with the gl to add skill that will consume it or add new combo based on the number of gl, by example if you have the 3rd stack you unlock a 4th hit of combo that can only be used under GL3 and such... or add another stack without that impact that much the damage of the monk.

the trouble of gl it do too many thing at the time, they need to tune it done for allows more add to the gameplay of the monk.

ps: actually i just did get an idea after write this, fist of wind add aoe damage to all gcd skill while changing the potency, a bit like in the cutscene where lyse and the derplander fight, each hit create an explosion of wind.

True, although we are talking about a world first group. By the time 'regular' groups get to it the gear upgrades acquired will diminish Mantra's usefulness. Still, it's good to see a Monk involved, I really don't want another repeat of #deleteMNK

I don't know if the Devs changed it but Brotherhood is a party wide buff of 15yalms of a 5% damage increase.

Brotherhood is a party-wide buff of 15 yalms, but the 5% increase only affects Physical Damage, not magical, and the chakra generation stems from weaponskill use, not spells, so the total potential of monk is locked behind party composition. So if the monk is the only physical DPS in an 8-man party, all of the chakra generation is dependent on the tanks.

Monks and samurais were taken because dragoons were in a much worse state then they are now. And it was also a very easy tier. And the first tier. So groups hadn't had the time to test out comps and see what works for them as much. If you look at groups clearing ultimate/savage coil. The numbers are MUCH lower for monks and samurais.

Monk is top 3, 4 dps in deltascape savage right now. But bottom three in ultimate coil. And bottom two in more casual content like the 24-man raid. So it is still very fight and composition dependent. Comparing it to another high dps, low-ish utility job like summoner, summoner is better by all metrics right now. FAR better. Speaking of which, I don't get people complaining about summoner and machinist in here. They are the most overbuffed dps jobs in the game at the moment.

I wouldn't call SMN a low-ish utility job since it has about the same amount of utility as a DRG or NIN. Rez is a very powerful tool and Devotion, while not as powerful as Battle Litany or Trick attack, also provides extra mitigation and healing, lessening the strain on healers so they can DPS more. Contagion and Radiant Shield are also fairly helpful, albeit highly overlooked, tools as well.

On topic, the problem really comes from how MNK gets screwed in maintaining GL; Nothing but long CDs with situational uses and a very short timer in general, make it the worst class mechanic as every other class with a similar mechanic either has them last for long periods or are quickly off their CDs.

Agreed, not saying it isn't dependent upon comp but don't BRD's and MCH's count as physical DPS? So really the worst party comp would be RDM/SMN/BLM/MNK for a MNK. The other reason I brought it up is the opening post didn't clarify that it was a party wide buff. Which if you have MCH/BRD/DRG/MNK than that is a 5% flat DPS increase across the board. The MCH's and BRD's have no reason to be so far away as last i checked there was no optimal range for a BRD/MCH and DMG is consistent whether you're on the butt or at max range.

Also it would be chakra generation from 6/8 party members since they would all be weaponskills.

I do agree that your chosen composition is, in fact, ideal for Monk. Except the party would then revolve around Monk. All the chosen classes would be there for the Monk's selfish benefit, which takes away from total raid utility that, say, a high caliber SMN could provide with not only DPS, but also bringing Devotion along with a Raise in case the situation become dire. The main argument for Brotherhood is that it does not act like it should, a party-wide buff; the RNG tacked onto it is another issue with it, but considering the Devs desired RNG to become a facet of Monk, it is unlikely that they'll simply remove the RNG portion of it anytime before a complete overhaul.

I am not disagreeing with you at all and I do believe MNK needs some tweaks. MNK was my first melee dps to 70 and then I did DRG. The way I looked at it is DRG felt like a true expansion of the abilities where as MNK abilities felt bolted on. I am also used to 3.0 abilities so Foe in 3.0 you would not consider a raid utility buff since it only buffed Magic Damage. I am purely just asking from a clarification sake so we are speaking the same language.

There's so much (constructive?) Criticism on Stormblood Monk but no real word from SE.

What i personally would have liked was a new ability for starters and not just giving Monks a bunch of buffs and whatever the hell Tackle Mastery was supposed to translate into.

Our weakness is how punishing losing GL is so having a means on par with blood of the dragon, huton or even transpose to a degree for saving some of our stacks would have bee a world of good for Monks. A true class progression and not hacked on and I'll conceived abilities that fail as often as they work.

I favor giving Monks a (better than RoE) ability that helps maintain our stacks thus fixing the glaring issue of being the only job without a new expansion attack and the pain of losing our job resource in one go.

Tornado kick could, for instance, give a buff called Rolling Thunder that lasts for 30 seconds.

A new GCD non-form attack called Hurricane Fist could consume Rolling Thunder and reapply our stacks of Greased Lightning.

Riddle of Earth can now be removed as Hurricane Fist is more reliable, doesn't involve us sometimes having to intentionally take damage. Simple. We get a cool ability that works off an ability we were originally meant to use for jump phases and it's 100% reliable whereas Riddle of Earth is not.

If you actually do the math on Brotherhood's proc rate, it's remarkably low even with the best comp possible. 15 seconds/an approximate 2.5 GCD is 6 chances per individual affected multiplied by 5/8 is 30 chances at a 30% success rate is... 10 chakras on average. That's two Forbidden Chakras.Overall that hardly makes up for the substantial slow on Riddle of Fire, especially since they will get throttled by Forbidden Chakra's GCD preventing you from ever really benefiting from exceptional RNG.

there also other issue, what even if you have the best luck whit rng and get a insane amount of procs from criticals and brotherhood, you will at best, only launch a max of 3 forbidden chakras while brotherhood is active because of the rather dumb 5s recast time on the forbidden chakra

Finally got monk to 70 and just wow the gcd on forbidden chakra just kills the mood during proc payday. Also love the fact whenever monk is brought up to the devs they use perfect dodge. Was fine with hw mnk felt smooth now it feels just clunky.

Not reading the posts below this so idk if it was mentioned, but yes, using RoE during mindjack reapers in V3S (among other things like -100 in V2S and so on) can definantly help, often times this is the point in the fight monks lose there stacks, either due to bad timing on refreshing GL3 when you have to move away from the boss (and as such have less time on ur GL3) or because she immediately jumps after the reapers to a random square and it could be a far away tile and shoulder tackle isnt up. RoE has its uses, it just doesnt have its common uses. as others have said, simply removing anything related to fist of earth and making it fully extend GL3 duration would fix any shortcomings it already has and the high CD timer prevents it from being too powerful

Thats not an issue, its a design choice and one that i agree with, monk is already more RNG reliant now in SB than id ever prefer, adding on to that being able to use as many TFCs as u are able would create an even bigger gap between pulls where you are lucky and pulls where you are not, i like that its at 3 max for a brotherhood/RoF session because it lessens the amount of RNG that can screw me over from pull to pull.

That being said. i dont really care about any of the "useless" skills monk have, i dont care about tackle mastery, riddle of earth/wind or tornado kick, i can do like i did with one ilm and forget they exist if they really dont want to remove them, but what i DO want changed is 2 simple things that would make me enjoy monk the same way i enjoyed it in HW -- Remove the slow on RoF, even at the cost of a potency decrease --- make brotherhood affect the monk.
That is all i want. and ill have my old monk back. RoF is a garbage tier skill and it is the sole reason im playing sam more than monk, i miss monk.

it is a issue because it punish you for good rng, something what only has bard to some degree, but no other job has, and besides getting one or 2 more forbidden chakras won't make a extreme huge gap in comparison of other dps, even whit a full phisical comp, usualy you get at best 2 forbidden chakras, 3 if you are lucky, and then if rng is smiling you lose a reasonable amount of chakra stacks just because you can't spend them on nothing while the forbidden chakra is on cooldown, i personally prefer what brotherhood gives a steady non-rng based acumulation of chakras over time what depend on rng to get them, like while brotherhood is active you get assured enough chakras stacks over time to use the forbidden chakra 2 times

Why not if you use form stance on top of changing stance, you also get a GL stack? That way it will be very hard to lose GL even if they don't fix perfect balance timer...
