1. DCU didn't have that many pre-orders (its current lifetime total sales amount to around 600k with PC and PS3 combined).
2. The point was that SWTOR has more pre-orders than FFXIV even shipped boxes, let alone sold (which is true).

actualy, DCU did have that many and more
they were overly bragging about how they had well over a million when it came out
but my point about different game genres and the fact that not everyone cares about every other mmo out there stands
Star wars right now isnt selling based on how great a game its going to be, this is pure fact
its selling cuz its friggin star wars
Success really does depend on your definition.
for as wonderful as i think ff11 was for me personally i can come across ppl today that call it a fail from day 1 :p
as for 14...to me, it is a success in the making. since the current team has taken over, i can see success happening each and every update. im loyal to ff and thats just me, i cant help it.
many of the other games ppl mentioned in this thread hold absolutly no interest to me, ever, they never would.
peoples interests are highly individualized.
i play 3 games at present, ff14, wow and rift ,and love each one for certain situations and certain content. and although wow is considered the "most successful" its not my favorite
Not one game has everything i like, i enjoy each one for a different reason. and will remain in all 3 for many years because of that.
will 14 ever reach millions? idk but i also dont care really, i dont see it as a contest or competition (thats SEs job ^^)
it offers some fun and i think it can only blossom into something alot more IF the team sticks at it and revamps pretty much ...everything from the ground up (which they have indeed started doing )
FFXIV, SWTOR, and DCU all fall under this definition:

you are missing the point re-read my post. you are talking about current game, i am talking about 2.0. ppl talking about beta testing 2.0 is my point, how can this be a 2.0 beta test when 2.0 will use a different server and game engine, if this was a 2.0 beta test why can't no1 tell me what the crystal tower is like or how well balanced the PvP is.
my piont is you can't say 2.0 will fail because you haven't tried it, and you can't call this a 2.0 beta test, because its not
I'll show you my sources:
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales...iverse-online/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales...iverse-online/
Now show me where a million people pre-ordered the game and how 800,000 of them changed their mind at the last minute (since the game only sold 200k in the first week combining both platforms).
And finally, if you know who Biggs and Wedge are, then you know it's possible to like Final Fantasy and Star Wars at the same time.
It's still a bit too early to tell since their grand re-release is at 2.0. It's vision and direction of the game has been completely revised with the change of director/producer. And obviously, all that content has yet to be completed.
I still believe the majority of the market for FFXIV is in Japan rather than all the other regions combined. That being said, SWTOR doesn't list Japanese as an language option for it's releases. http://www.swtor.com/info/faq
So, it won't really have a large impact on their player base as much. Although, it's not to say they aren't aware of their competitors, since they are trying to aim globally.
It's not just trying to mimic, but that their ideas aren't refined but more of trial and error. This might be due to the time restrictions, where they can't really plan out everything and just have to rush out and deliver it. Even more pressure now since the game is live and not only trying to meet expectations of the publisher but also the players.
Some examples of revised aspect of the game;
-Crafting, such as the re-revisions they had to make to dyes.
-Core battle mechanics, they seems to be still tinkering around with this.
-Re-revisions to Monster AIs behaviors.
I think it is pretty much a coin toss at this point. A better plan would have been to put off putting out the game in the state it was in on release and just went through with 2.0. This is mainly because SE burned alot of bridges with players when it comes to this game. Now they have to try to get all of those players back and get new players who have already read and heard how poor FFXIV was done and has been. Gonna need to market the game pretty hard.
If we could just get over the class reform hump... I mean seriously, what is this the third or fourth time now? Granted this is clearly the most major since late July. Personally I never had a problem with how the classes worked originally or even after the July update, but trying to stay on subject here, the absolute worst problem since launch has always been content. Although I guess one could argue that guild leves were meant to be the majority of content, but we really could use anything they give us at this point.
Will it succeed? Yes.
Will it ever have subscriber numbers approaching what we see with WoW, Aion, and Rift? No.
While I think it'll eventually be successful enough to redeem the FF name for online titles, you can't be a genre leader by copying the genre standards.
But it is, every single application that they add and system will be tested this year and implemented and improved for 2.0, every little bit of content that they add we will test, and that will be streamlined into 2.0, so please do tell me how it is not a beta ? because it is :)
wrong. we will not get to play the crystal tower or experience the ishgard content. maybe when they release the new game engine and server, we will get a chance to really beta test it, what we are doing now is not beta test tho, to be honest it is very hard to describe what we are doing now, as far as i know this is the first time any1 has designed a games inner workings while ppl still play the game, if you want to say we are testing 2.0 fair enough but leave the word beta out
When the PS3 players who have those dusty old codes they got from buying FFXIII get to finally use them to sign up for the FFXIV 2.0 beta test, and you'll see the screenshots and videos of them gallivanting in an MMO that actually works properly, then you'll understand that you're not actually beta testing anything.
Honestly, this really depends on how the player feels about the game itself, and if they are playing any other games. etc.
As for me, I'm a fan of the Final Fantasy Series and a veteran player of FFXI, so my opinion may be a bit different from someone that is currently playing other MMORPGs. I devote myself to a single game from each genre pretty much, and I am devoted to FFXIV being my mmorpg.
I like to try other games and I must say that most of them seem much more complete than FFXIV, even in their beta phases. However, the overall experience of playing these games just doesn't keep me interested. I loved Star Wars and remember playing with the toys as a child and such, but nothing quite feels like Star Wars should have became an MMORPG, I'd rather like to see a X-WING remake or something. Anyways, I can see ToR becoming a success for a few years, but then everyone will move on to the next mmorpg.
FFXIV to me is like my experience with FFXI, even though there were other mmorpgs out there, I always moved back to playing FFXI. I can't tell you exactly what it was that always drew me back to playing it, but all I can say is that my experience with FFXI was a love/hate relationship. I had no relationship with other mmos, so I guess that explains how i felt.
Now, for FFXIV, I believe it is going to be successful, in the same way FFXI was. It will be that game you will find yourself going back to, no matter how much it frustrated you. That's just how I see FFXIV and how it is going to be. Right now, it sort of gives off that feel, even though its far from what the players want out of it. All I can say is that I'll definitely be playing FFXIV for the long haul.
IMHO this FF Yoshida is making doesn't seems to have what's needed to compete with any of the current MMOs or even with the ones about to be released like SWTOR.
Yoshida's FFXIV can't even compete with older MMOs like WoW or FFXI...and i really doubt it ever will...he's making an oversimplified game that is mediocre regarding any aspect other than graphics and sound.
I still think the original FFXIV does could be an even match to any modern MMO we see here in population (which is what matters)...even SWTOR...because the concept behind it makes it extremely casual-friendly, which would leave it with a completely different target population, not really competing with the said HC MMOs.
But what is done, is done. I still think this game can succeed...but not in the path it is. If they want FFXIV to follow the HC path then the first step would be getting rid of FFXI...but FFXI > Yoshida's FFXIV...so i actually would turn the FFXIV into a HD remake of FFXI...in the end it's what people wanted at start! I'd convert the entire FFXI to FFXIV graphic standards, and merge them both. Maybe making it in a future timeline...a brand new storyline that would, this time, involve all nations not only from Quon and Midartia, but also Aht Urghan and Eorzea. Vana'diel even have the Maws for those willing to have some nostalgic moments at original storyline...instead of going back to only the great war, this time you could also go back in time to what is the current present of FFXI.
And, to make up to the "loss" of FFXI subscribers (let's pretend that a HD version of FFXI wouldn't bring most of the old playerbase back) i do would relaunch the original FFXIV to focus on casual players. In the end they both would, instead of competing, work in parallel, each one focusing on their target public and excelling in it.
I think, if this game can generate constant income ( and profit too! ) for SE, it can say its success.
This game can't compare to mass-market MMO like other game but FF fans gonna play it :)
I feel the same way, Nuru! I am actually looking forward to both GW2 and FFXIV 2.0 and plan to play both, switching it up depending on my mood. I have high hopes for 2.0, but unsure at just how successful it'll be. Still, I'm a fan through-and-through and will support it for as long as I enjoy myself playing it.
Also, I hope for SE's sake that the E3 trailer won't just be pre-rendered cut-scenes (which will be beautiful, no doubt). I want them to show gameplay and things we are all looking forward to for 2.0 : redesigned environments, new classes/jobs, gameplay, extra goodies like housing, male miqote/female highlanders and roegadyns, etc. I don't want it to just be a pretty movie!
I don't think it will ever top WoW subs...they had a good chance and blew it in the beginning ; ; I remember this game was so hyped heh. I mean you never know...it is possible after 2.0. They would have to advertise a lot and have some really nice content...
SE needs to do a huge advertising campaign Fan site Adds, lot of TV commercials and have a polished version of 2.0 for E3 showings if they want to have a chance at recovery.
The overwhelming majority of the players and the media have no faith in SE recovering the game and almost everyone in the mmo community has written it off as a failure.
SE has to prove those people wrong with a very very good showing. If the initial reaction is good for V2.0 at E3 and such people and media will look at the game again. If the release of 2.0 is solid and has fixed all the major issues the game might get the title "the biggest comeback in videogame history".
SE worries me about advertising though, they tend to fail hardcore outside Japan in this respect. And Eu and NA is where they probably need to do the most. I hope SE realizes this.
FFXI was never super famous. It did well. I expect nothing less from FFXIV.
It all depends really and its a big matter of opinion and for me I'm waiting to see what happens with 2.0. If the game sticks to the final fantasy traditions and such properly then I think it'll have a pretty good chance. However if it veers to far away from the final fantasy traditions...well I can't really say I personally will stay. In the end I know a lot of people are looking for an online final fantasy and an experience that is like 11 in a way.
And with Dragon Quest X which is gonna have mmo elements and of course Swtor I really do hope we get some heavy FF tradition with 2.0
depends on your idea of success. will it have people playing it yes... will it be popular...no. anyone who has ever played a good mmo, not made by SE, has already gave up and deemed this turd a failure. between now and 2.0 there will be 3 major releases that will draw more than the original release most likely 2.0 combined. swtor,d3,tera, will all 3 draw least 1 million sub at release. mark my words they will be more successful in their first month than this game will be 2 years running. ffxiv is running down the shenmue series path and it is not looking good.
Anyone who has played a good MMO will know that they're all essentially the same and people are always looking for something new to play.
And what exactly is wrong with Shenmue path? Both games were great.Quote:
down the shenmue series path and it is not looking good
very sad and very true
warcraft is the best example, and the best example of why games keep their subs
they all want a new game, but they cant bear to part with their old characters, cuz if they stop playing after 5+ years they will feel like they wasted those 5+ years on a character they will no longer have
Ive been beta testing SWTOR for almost 2 months now, and I was here at launch for XIV, I honestly was incredibly disappointed with XIV, but Yoshi-P is really really turning this game around and doing things no other game that has had this rocky of a start has ever managed. I'm really proud of SE and Yoshi-P for stepping up and doing what NOBODY expected.
Having said that I play XIV ehhh off and on, kinda waiting for 1.20 as it finally looks like it's that one patch that may make me come back for real. As far as SWTOR goes, it's OVERRATED out the wazoo. My first initial reaction was "this is WoW...but in space" and it pretty much is.
Now having said that, we must all concede that WoW was a very successful game and pretty darn fun. I didn't care for it because of the player base and the games lore being screwed up, but it was a fun game. So having said that, SWTOR will be a fun game, if people are looking to jump ship from any MMO out there even WoW then it is a very fair substitute for any MMO out there. Is it the big MMO killing apocolypse everyone is making it out to be? I don't think so. In my opinion the reason it's so hyped is A. Bioware B. People are tired of WoW and getting the same expansion reboxed every 2 years and C. It's a big name franchise like Star Wars. Which A and C won't keep people, but if they're truly tired of WoW, SWTOR might just keep a ton of those players over there, even after the Pandara expansion.
So in short do I think this game will survive SWTOR? Absolutely, but this game won't reach it's zenith in player base and sheer power until v2.0 comes out and everyone sees what is essentially a completely new repackaged version of the game. The game we all should have gotten last year when we bought it. I think after v2.0 you will really see XIV step into the market and compete, nobody has ever done this much to force a MMO to succeed, usually companies just put a skeleton crew in a failed game and let it breathe it's last over a few years of slow painful death. Vanguard Saga of Heroes anyone? lol
Greetings Everybody,
While we encourage thoughtful discussions on the FINAL FANTASY XIV forums, we would like to keep these discussions solely regarding FINAL FANTASY XIV. Since a lot of this thread contains discussions of other games, I am going to go ahead and lock the thread at this time.
Regards,
GM Bublex
