Allow me to explain... if Yoshi and the Dev team had specified that the first class housing (costing 312 million on my server, Excalibur) would be something similar to a mini city, then I would say yes, the price is justified. Thus, it now becomes a unique status symbol that all the largest wealthiest guilds can all aspire towards.
For example, (and I will try to use some simple games here to get my point across)... in games like dot.hack GU, the two largest guilds had their own exclusive housing zones with their own private council rooms, pvp arena's and so forth. Even in SAO, the Knights of the round had a massive stone palace and such.
Now, here on Eorzea, if Yoshi had said the first class FC housing would be the size of say, a whole zone within Ul'Dah (something like the whole "Chamber of Rule" area)... and that it comes with its own aetherythe crystal that gives free ports, its own private pvp training arena, private lake or river or pool, private rooms for all members, private garage out back for a couple huge airships, private chocobo breeding grounds etc...
Then, it now becomes (and sustains) a clear future objective that the "elitists" can continue to strive towards. But charging 300 million for the land that will hold the mansion that was shown in previous Live letters is just too exuberant and demolishes the morale of newer smaller FCs who have actually worked very hard to stay together while hoping to find a private niche they can call their own.
Personally, the more I think about it, the more I realize I'm not bothered about it anymore... I just won't buy. Period.
