TBH I don't support the idea for as many platforms as possible, too.
IMO more platform = binding to the lowest platform.
I concern about China release as well, as I have heard many negative comment regarding the discipline of those game agents.
Everything that's being happening lately with X1 proves you wrong though. Since the day X1 was revealed MS has done nothing else but backpedaling because of peoples complaints. Drop policy on used games, drop always online, drop kinect, drop live gold for third party apps. On all of those they originally stated they would not negotiate but they ended up doing just that because of the complaints.
So yeah, what they actually do is a bit different from what you assume they would do.
The xbone does have inferior hardware. One look at the specs of both consoles shows the fact plain as day. Think of it this way. The PS4 is essentially a low to slightly medium spec PC of today. The xbone is a slower, less powerful version of that with extra hardware issues (ESram's been giving developers problems and until recently 10% of the already weaker GPU was reserved for the useless kinect) and unfriendly policies.
The game's already being held back by hardware limitations simply for being on consoles at all. Whether it be the ridiculously small world size, graphics and animations being dumbed down compared to 1.0, or the oversimplified game mechanics.
As for subscription numbers, as long as this game continues down the current path of FFXIV (WoW copy/paste edition) mediocrity you shouldn't expect much (or any for that matter) higher subscription numbers any time soon. We don't even know how many active subscriptions the game really has right now. "Over 2 million registered users" is likely half (if even that) active subscriptions while the rest is padded numbers from people who quit and RMTs that get banned and keep re-buying the game. Those numbers are only going to get even more padded when the chinese version releases.
They didn't backpedal because of people's complaints. They backpedaled because they saw their pre-order numbers (or lack there-of) and their wallets screamed bloody murder, then they saw their dwindling sales numbers after release and had to finally take the axe to that useless kinect. Don't be fooled by PR speak. If they were truly listening to people's complaints you'd suddenly start seeing Rare releasing the sort of games they used to make for Nintendo instead of useless kinect games.
Because when you say it your way it sounds like they're making changes out of "the goodness of their hearts" for the sake of having happy customers, when the reality is they did it out of a desperate attempt to make their wallets stop crying after how badly they screwed everything up after seemingly trying to emulate every stereotypically evil corporation you see in movies and thinking they'd get away with it.
No company ever does a change out of the goodness of their hearts. It's naive to think that way. Companies do not have hearts, they have shareholders. You think Sony did what they did out of the goodness of their heart? No, it was to get ahead of competition and sell more consoles. Plain and simple.
Never said Sony did. But Sony did have the superior console. It's too late for MS to change that. Even after removing the kinect they're still asking you to buy a weaker console for the same price as the PS4. MS can make all the changes they want but they'll never be able to fully repair the damage they did to themselves. At least not until the next console generation. If people will even give them that chance.
I do not disagree with that. I just replied to a comment saying MS will not change their mind when it comes to cross play only because people will complain. I brought up a few examples where they did actually change their mind. They're in panic mode now so they will try to do whatever people ask them for. That feedback xbox thingie with people voting for features, I don't see other companies having that.
That said I don't care really. I play on PC only and all I see with these new platforms is more manpower wasted on things that have no impact on me. For SE this is business though so more platforms, more customers.
Personally I haven't bought either console (PS4 or XBone) because neither has shown any games that have released that I've wanted (and like hell I'll buy an XBone). I do play on the PS3, though, as well as the PC (but barely) and haven't seen any reason to stop playing on the PS3. Really, there's nothing about the PC version that entices me. You may consider consoles wasted manpower but I appreciate that they kept their word on a console release, even though it was a promise made during 1.0 by Tanaka. That speaks alot more to me than specs.
More platforms doesn't guarantee more customers. Or at least doesn't guarantee a increase in customers large enough to be worth the cost and effort of the port. For example, do you think the xbone release of ESO is going to increase its dwindling subscription numbers much? ESO may be a buggy mess but outside of the bugs it suffers from alot of the same problems ARR suffers from (too solo-centric and easy, too similar to WoW etc.). I honestly can't imagine many people that would buy ESO or ARR for the xbone. Whether it be because of the required xbox live (even if you'd be paying for xbox live anyways PS4 is the superior console and PS+ is cheaper) or because the game will run better on PS4 or PC.
The problem is the PS3 can barely run the game and they had to dumb the entire game down specifically to get it running on PS3. If they'd of kept it PC exclusive or at least skipped the PS3 straight to PS4 it may of had less subs but the quality of the game and content would likely be much better than it is right now.
Linux support would be nice. I wonder if Yoshi's gotten his hands on a Steambox.
Normally I would be all for this sort of thing, but i refuse to support the Xbox One in any shape or form.
I agree with this statement 100% which also mean that I do NOT support SE or Yoshida's plan to continue spreading out to other platforms (at least not right now). While it's great that PS4-ers got their hand on the game and many PS3-ers got a chance to upgrade, I felt like this decision hindered development resource that could be put to rolling out content patches faster and god forbid possibly putting the roadmap back on track.
Yes, it's great that we can get more people to join this game, but so what? That's not the point here. Yoshida claimed that he wanted to relaunch FF14 as a quality Final Fantasy game that could survive on 400k sub. Well last I remember, we have way over 500k daily unique logins which realistically would put us over 600k+ sub. What we need now is more focus on dx11 implementation, addons, frontline, airship, gold saucer, overworld primals, and anything that Yoshida used to tease and made this game a worthwhile investment during the beta test. (For ex: addons and frontline were supposed to come 3 months ago according to Yoshida's interview last year)
Like the user I've quoted, I'm also quite aware of how much this game was dumbed down in term of quality and gameplay for the mass. I've tried to defend FF14 when the relaunch was swamped with login errors and bugs. When people whined about how patches were delayed, I tried to sympathize with Yoshida and the challenges his team had to keep everything running. But now I don't care anymore, I just don't want to see empty promises coming from Yoshida given how much faith I and many others have given him. I've put my money where my mouth is and I will keep subscribing at least to see how the expansion unfold.
tl;dr: Focus on promised content FAST, NOT on more platform launches
The PS3 runs this game fine, not perfect, but it gets the job done. The problem with the argument you are presenting is that you subscribe to a lot of speculation brought forth by others or yourself and then present them as they are fact. The fact is we do not know if the fame would be better or more to your liking if the PS3 wasn't supported.
In the end I think we are both approaching it from two different points of view. You from a player, and me as a developer. While I do not know what SE has planned I do understand the vast amount of work that goes into what they had to do. In the end they have made a fantastic game, and the best way for the game to keep getting better is to being it to more audience. China, Xbox, Latin America, etc...
That's what I'm trying to do here, I can understand our point of view, and can respect you for it, but I disagree with your arguments as a whole. :)
Traditionally these two pieces are handled by different teams. I support Latin America being on its own setup because content localization could have an impact on speed of patches for the same reasons you give, but don't feel the same way about the game as you do. As I feel that Yoshio-P and team have proven themselves, and have delivered on their promises.
FFXIV on TRS-80 or RIOT!
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
This Game on Nintendo Wii U would hold the ffxiv back that is something SE will never do.
Why is that? They released the game on PS3, so you could argue that is going to happen anyway.
Edit: Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, I own the game on PC, PS3 and PS4. Honestly, the PS3 version is the only one I really can't bear to play. Graphical fidelity and frame rate aside, I get a tonne of input lag on PS3 that I don't get on PS4 or PC.
You couldn't be more right. My friend who just got a PS4 over an X1 due to Final Fantasy XIV running on PS4, was hesitant on the upgrade, but after getting his hands on the PS4 version from PS3 he was blown away. Both visually and how the game plays is far better, and leads to more enjoyment of the game outright. :)
Just to note, the Wii U has way better hardware then the PS3, and could be supported for longer. Plus the game pad would be amazing to play XIV with/on... Touch support for skills, maps, and even a keyboard for chat. The issue is the internal memory and sure an external HD is supported, but not everyone could enjoy the game without an extra HD.
Yes, you can have different departments working on different part of the game without affecting each other but in essence you are still allocating funding and staffs to those departments. For your example, let say we want to localize a Latin America version, Yoshi would probably have to hire 3 or 4 guys for translation + community outreach and let say that add up to an expense of $500k a year. My point is pretty much to spend this $500k a year on improving content patches and server quality by focusing on their respective departments.
Also I will agree with you that they have proven themselves when it come to successfully relaunching the game, but the promises that they thrown out to grab ahold of legacy and new players during the beta period are still not fulfilled.
Ah, I see your point, you're looking at the money, and not the resources. When I was looking at it the other way. I think then that all boils down to a business decision. Per your example, if having to spend 500K more a year ends up bringing in 2mil a year, then that might be worth the investment.
In the MMO I agree with you, content is key, and keeping your base happy should be top priority, as we are already paying for the game, but if you are able to hire and grow your team, that will lead to more and better content down the line. The payoff isn't instant, but it will come. With the success of XIV, growing the base and keeping the base happy will always be a juggling act. From what we know Yoshi-P wants this game on the X1, and the Mac. I think those are two platforms that would help us grow our base and therefor bring in more content.
I think right now we will continue to get our major updates every 3 months, and right now I think (IMO) that the bigger the base, the more content they will be able to pack in with the expansion, and further updates. Some might not like the idea of waiting for the expansion, but in development reality, it can take several months to spin up (train) new resources.
In regards to our petition on change.org https://www.change.org/petitions/phi...shared-servers we are only needing 23 more before they send it over to Microsoft, and as for our feedback.xbox.com idea, https://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/25...mes-like-final is up to 204 votes.
Please keep the support up. :)
Thanks!
Comment on Microsoft's Feedback Site:
Put simply, Microsoft isn't doing this to "protect" users, they're doing it to protect income for themselves via server management and the like.Quote:
Cross-platform play was something that was explored with on the Xbox 360. Sadly, due to the focus on shooters only the entire idea was scrapped. This is something of a tragedy as games are more than just shooters.
Final Fantasy XIV could do VERY well on all the major platforms, especially with care made to consider the needs of someone on a gamepad.
Other games, MMOs, Action Titles, Turn-Based Strategy Games, even racing titles could benefit from having cross-platform play. Reading through the comments here, I'm finding myself disappointed with the number of people who immediately assume that this will fully and irrevocably impact the shooter market.
Look, that's fine. Your opinion is valid but doesn't really apply to the whole implication. Just because cross-platform play is possible doesn't mean it has to be implemented in such a way for all games. It may not make sense for Battlefield 4 to cross Xbox One players with PC players, but it would make sense for it to be crossed with Playstation 4 players. It would also make sense for games like Final Fantasy XIV, ESO, Civilization, XCOM, and others that can truly benefit from such a situation to do so.
Let the developers decide which groups to bundle together. Should a developer want to push their game to cross-play with more than just Microsoft's systems, they should be able to do so, especially in the "Massively Multiplayer" front.
As any company should. Companies do what's best for their customers when it ends up being what's best for them. SE is the same way, companies don't like to do things that could cost them lots of money. Thus, we the consumer has some influence as we vote with our dollars.
If your point is that Microsoft only cares about the money, there for they won't do anything that makes since to us, then I'll have to disagree with that idea, and I won't give up because MS is interested in making money.
Just an update on our progress:
Feedback.xbox.com merged my original post with another post for cross platform play: https://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/25...rm-multiplayer and has several more votes. Now sitting at 1288.
There is another idea just focused on FFXIV which has 140 votes currently. https://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/25...iv-on-xbox-one
Also, on change.org the petition now is just 21 votes of being sent to Phil Spencer. https://www.change.org/petitions/phi...shared-servers
I feel like the more systems its on, the longer it will take to them to release patches and updates for the game. They would need a extra people for each console to code updates and patches for just that system.
Its not very effective and I doubt the extra revenue from an Xbox One release would be worth while for the FFXIV team at this time.
I don’t see the point on having a ‘change.org’ petition. Its every company’s right to decide what to do with their products. Yes, we are the customers and they should make all of us happy, but that is unrealistic. Its the company’s money and future on the line, they need to do whats best for their employees and investors as well.
140 votes would not be an incentive to spend that kind of money to release it for a new platform. They do what they think is best for their products and share holders. Microsoft Xbox is notorious for players hacking and using pirated games. These are the decisions they have to make to allow video games companies to make their profit on their system.
Another example would be the whole FFVII remake. While almost everyone would love a remake, they have stated before that it is a huge risk for the future of the company. It could either bring them wealth beyond their dreams, or sink them into bankruptcy. Its like gambling with the future of your employees hoping for that full house hand.
And the whole cross platforms is really dependent upon the game company to provide servers for these platforms to connect too. Not Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft. Hosting your own servers for millions of players is really expensive.
Maybe a few years down the road Xbox might reach a level where a good portion of gamers each have one at home and it may be worth while for them to invest in, but right now its not there. Out of all my gamer friends only one has an Xbox One.
I have played FFXI on PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. I prefer PC, especially since its on a laptop which I can port around everywhere.
Not saying that FFXIV should never be on Xbox One, I'm just realistically saying that it probably wont happen for a few years. Square may be doing great with the new FFXIV right now, but I'm sure they are being cautious with their decisions and where they are allocating the funding. They were in the negative with the 1.0.
It's not because Microsoft doesn't think they could make money on Final Fantasy XIV. It's because FF14's cross-platform model is opposed to Microsoft's walled garden model. In a nutshell, Microsoft doesn't want its paying customers interacting online with other people who it has no control over. Imagine you're a paying customer of Xbox Live, you go to the Enforcement Team to report another user for harassment, cheating, or modding, only to be told there's nothing they can do because that person is a PSN user and Microsoft has no authority over them.
Personally I hope that it changes, or at the least a one-time exception is made for this game. I would love to play ARR on Xbox One someday. And in general things seem to be moving toward more online integration, so MS is going to have to grapple with this issue. But there is legitimate reasoning behind the current policy, not just console warrior logic like "Xbox owners wouldn't buy a Japanese game" or some such.
Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest X is coming on 3DS via streaming, so could Square Enix stream Final Fantasy XIV:ARR from their servers for the Wii U and Xbox One versions?
I think ARR has a better chance at being released for WiiU than Xbone.
Update 8/16/2014
We are still making progress. In the latest interview on Duel Shockers http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/08/...and-much-more/ Yoshi-P reiterated that they are still talking with Microsoft, and that our support is needed if we want to see this game ported to that platform.
Just an update on our number:
1. For change.org petition we just need 14 more signatures.
2. For the Cross Platform Support on Xbox Feedback, they are up to 1754 votes
3. And for the FFXIV port on Feedback, they are up to 176 Votes
There are other feedback options for FFXIV on Xbox One on those sites as well, #2 was all about FFXIV and cross platform and was merged with another cross platform feedback request.
Even if you don't plan to own an X1, or don't care for Microsoft, please vote, provide feedback and support Yoshi-P.
Thanks, :)
They did it for XI.
Would like to see it done for XIV.
I don't own an Xbox One or anything. But I'd like to see XIV players have every option in the world available to them.
