It's second because there is no good competition. If you actually look at what second means and contrast it to the first most subbed MMO, FFXIV success has been rather poor. Wow Averaged somewhere around 100 million + registered accounts over 11 years. That's a little under 5 million new registered users per year of the game's existence.

This game has had 5 million over subs since launch in 2010. It's 2016 now and that means this game gains new registered accounts at a rate of little under 1 million per year.

By the best comparison we have, This game is barely 1/5th as successful as wow at obtaining new registered accounts. This game has a problem retaining players. That 'second place spot' you pointed out is a very poor second place.

You can keep telling yourself that this game is just fine, just wait until the expansion when there are noticeably less players returning. Every content patch is full of cheap hooks and people begun wising up.

Legion is going to decimate this game and I cannot wait!

But FFXIV was born in a completely different context and era from WoW. You can't just grab numbers and compare them, WoW history and success has to do with timing, too. MMO market today is not the same from 5, 10 years ago.

Also, why have such grudge for a game? To the point that you want to see it decimated. That's nonsense and blind hate.

WoW's success honestly had nothing to do with its graphics and more so its marketing. You had celebrities supporting the game, the game was in television shows, constant commercials. SE hardly marketed XI or XIV which greatly hurt its success in the long run. Now with all these f2p games up and around, too many people are against paying for much really when they can get something similar for free entertainment wise.

Then people should not act like this game is second to wow, because it's not. They are not even in the same league of success. As your points are valid about the different climates, I was not the person who initially brought wow into the convo.

If people want to act like this game can even stand in wow's shadow, then I think it's right to contrast what ever data people might want to bring up about this game, such as being the second most subbed to mmo.

As to my grudge, I have supported this game from 1.0 until now only to get spat upon by the dev team and casual players. I found a better raiding environment in a different game, so I am more than happy to delight in the misfortune in a game that did not care for players of my ilk or myself included.

Lockouts are used for one purpose. To keep content relevant longer. To be blunt it's just artificial padding for the sake of giving the illusion of longevity.

Pretty much the entire game already. 90% of endgame players just farm currencies to buy endgame gear from rando npc x, y or c.

I never said this game was not successful. There is definitely a semblance of success, just no where near as robust as you might like to think. This game can't take it in the shorts like wow did sub wise. This game has a meager active player base and acting like the current end game is fine as is only exacerbates the problem.

An endgame climate where people are "giglamesh or bust" into this games 2nd (really it's 3rd) expansion is not a good sign. Go ahead though, pretend that everything is ok, pretend that this game is great at retaining players and pretend that the content we receive is both satisfactory in volume, depth, and quality.

SE the company, not the dev team, was hell bent on running this game on a skeleton crew and now it's starting to show. SE the company deserves to have this golden goose cooked, especially if ff15 turns out to be as clunky as the demo was at e3.

I want this game to do poorly because it deserves to do poorly. No, the game should not cater 100% to me, that is ridiculous to assume I feel that way. What I do feel is that if a game is going to drag raiders through content the dev team cannot even clear in it's entirety (looking at a4s), then the players that participate in that content should be rewarded for such a monumental amount of effort.

ARR raiding was great and then the dev team took a big steamy one right on top of the raiding community in heavensward. Why am I so salty? Because literally almost all my friends quit because the endgame is garbage. While I have been complaining on the OF for months about what has been killing the endgame, the dev team has done NOTHING to fix the raiding community.

This game does not deserve end game players. If the glamour fest casual core crowd can't sustain the game after the rest of us "hardcore elite" leave for other games, then this title deserves to fail.

i was an avid raider throughout the 2.0 patch cycles.When 3.0 came, i cleared the first alex savage in 2 weeks but halfway through the second floor i realized i hate the new tier raiding. The effort i put in had too minimalistic reward, i need more than higher level gear that will only last 3 months to give 3 hours of each night of my life. So i stopped raiding. I wasn't crafting either since i hated the script system. So i decided to take a break from the game until the new patch so i can continue the msq. And that is how i've been playing the game. I would stay subbed for a month or two and then go on breaks until next cycle of msq. I don't feel burnout and it helps me to keep looking forward to new content patch. The game as it is now doesn't deserve my hardcore dedication. So i will play it like a casual until such time where the raiding scenes get interesting again. But i can't deny the game is not in a good place. Each patch i log in i see less and less players around the marketboard in the 3 cities. it's kinda sad to see the declination of the population. I hope that the dev wouldnlearn from their mistakes and do something to retain players in 4.0 cycles.

Personally, I think that is not a great place for endgame. Getting those currencies is super easy and requires no skill or dedication. Run an easy as pie dungeon once per day then get shinies. Furthermore, there is no risk therefore, no reward to speak of. Add on to that the fact that every 6 months we toss that gear and get all new gear. Rinse and repeat over and over and over and you get the point.

I love this game, but as time goes on, the lockouts for everything endgame and a lack of endgame content that is relevant to me is slowly sapping that. I do other things, hunt minions, gold saucer, gather, craft, etc. I do like how WCoM takes some effort and I truly hope they continue down that road despite the cries to nerf it and FSoF. For myself, finally beating something that you struggled with is the fun in a game. I know it won't happen, but I do keep holding out hope that we get content like the 2.0 relic quest that required clearing somewhat difficult content again.

Again, pipe dream, I would love to see unique stats again, cure potency +10? Yes, please! Only having Crit, Det, SkSp, SpSp and lol parry as our only secondaries really keeps the balancing very simple. It also adds to the feeling of endgame being very shallow.

Unique stats would be amazing. But then you'll see the same old arguments of..wah excluded classes, wah balance, oh noes its "illusion" even although in 1.x, as I said a buncha times: with unique stats in 1.x I cleared every raid, primal fight and strong hold with one of each job..easily, nearly effortlessly and yes there is videos of it. I NEVER class stacked, never had a need to. There was room for every single job.

Just have to not think like a hive mind and/or learn how to play and how the game works.

Every fight in 1.0 the developers made could be beat with a normal party setup. Fun fact: If the player base can exploit it, they will. Stack BLM's on Garuda, stack BLM's on Cutter's Cry, stack BLM/MNK on Aurum Vale, stack ranged DPS in Dzmael Darkhold, stack Lancers in Ifrit Hard (because THM dps was pathetic in that fight), stack WAR's on Ifrit Extreme, stack ranged on Moogle. If fights in 2.0 could be exploited, it would have been, especially with the difficulty curve that raiding has.

Question, what -exactly- about unique stats makes the content you are fighting better? If you say options, I mind you that people will always go for what is best, no matter how you make the system.

While not as aggressive, this is how I felt with raiding as well. ARR Raiding felt right for me as far as the difficulty and design was concerned.

Things that I would be able to clear with my static in about 2 weeks for each turn doing 2-3hour nights for 3 days a week. I'm not going to cover it; savage is way too demanding of the group to be able to succeed and clear, and I do not have fun having to push for content like that in a game (and neither were 4-5 other people in the static). It all goes back to how there's a severe lack of middle ground as far as content is concerned, you have things that are laughably easy, EX trials, and savage. People will tell me that raiding in this game isn't for me...well it was in ARR, so what gives?

If it means new gear will be exciting, then I'm all up for that. I mean people do the optimization anyway, except the only thing we have to show for it is higher numbers. Not faster attacks, more procs or other bonuses. An example from WoW with tier sets was that it gave bonuses where you'd get a stacking buff from one abiltiy that boosted the crit chance of X ability, or a straight up increase to duration. Heck you could say it'd make it more interesting for theorycrafters to see if it's optimal for that bonus or get other pieces that have better substats.

The problem with trying to do something like that in FFXIV is that there is a severe lack of gear within the same relative ilvl. There's only ever two pieces in each tier that have the same ilvl, because we only ever get 4 bosses per raid cycle and theres no other sources.

You couple unique stats with difficult content, not everyone can acquire it regardless if its best. Raiders want motivation to feel like they are progressing, not just getting stats like everyone else can get. Challenging content is only good in the honeymoon phase then wears off after a person realizes that what they are doing it for is for minimal gain and will be obsolete shortly after acquiring it. People are throwing around 6 months but the average raider takes about a month to clear new savage raids or longer....The longer it takes, the less time they have to enjoy it before its obsolete or the mechanics get dumbed down because a majority of the community doesn't clear it within what the dev team feels is a reasonable time frame.

I really dislike this thread. I think everyone is just upset because they are sick of Heavensward, and they know the next expansion is coming.

That is fine (I guess?), but just remember, they shouldn't add bells and whistles to gear in expense of the quality of the content. I am for set bonuses similar to WoW (if done right), but some slight restructuring would need to be done to the system we have now.

A system like that however can easily break gear options. If a 5/5 set has something that just blows the alternate set out of the water, that is pretty unbalanced. This was mildly a thing in WoW, at least when I played it.

I mean...this is the case for any update they try to do. Unfortunately it really feels like a lot of corners were cut for hHavensward, and the players have paid for it. My point is that "people will always optimize anyway" shouldn't be a good reason to not add more diversity to something like stats, because people do this anyway with the substats whose only impact is your numerical dps, not actual gameplay. I don't even want to raid hardcore, so even provided that I'm in a static and we had a raid suited for us, I'm probably going to mess around a bit with something like set bonuses or equips as we get them, but I can;t even do that when they're literally nothing but numbers.

Thing is, no one knows what to expect for the next expansion. Is this the one where SE finally breaks the feeling of monotony, or are we going to be given another step back with more time gates of the same content? a lot of people remember what 3.0 was, and their grivances with it.

I'm not really sick of Heavensward at all. I liked the MSQ overall. If anything, I think I am a bit burnt out on doing the same thing I have been doing for almost 3 years now with very little actually changing. The game feels somewhat stagnant.

Before anyone comments or asks, I am still here because I still have hope that things will improve.

I'd prefer some breaks to the monotony as far as gear acquisition and battle content options, but I'm nowhere near interested in watching this game turn into a "raid or bust" hardcore Chinese bot farm simulator. People always seem to think that casuals will just "git gud" if the only means left for them to progress is challenging or grindy content, but in my experience I've found that the majority of them "git gone" instead, and that's not something anybody should want.

I don't hate HW. Story is good. And the only decent thing the game has going for it. However the infrastructure and design decisions in this game since 2.0 is atrocious. Bland, boring, repetitive.

Boy I wish I was around for 1.0. Probably would have liked it while the game had a heart and soul despite a terrible launch.

Duty Finder - Duty finder should always be a secondary, at best, as means of completing content. Free Companies should be promoted and rewarded to the point that is reigns as the go to for recruiting members for a party. Party Finder should be second in this aspect followed by Duty Finder. It is simply too easy to get into the mindset of I won't see these people ever again and don't want to put forth the effort to bother with any time of conversation that will help distract me from remembering I've done this dungeon about 50 times already.
Communication - Typing is nice. However, especially with PS3 (Xbox maybe), voice communication should be the main method of communication. It's simply easier and it leads to more fun.
Exploration - Everything is a little too easy quest-wise when it comes to exploration while going from place to place. I don't have to roam around and accidentally see something i never saw before. I go from point A to a clearly marked point B in a straight line.

Content promotion - There is tons to do in the game. The promotion for a lot of events is horribad. Pvp and Verminion are good examples. Great potential to be something that people would stream as an exciting but relatively different mmo experience, but nope. Failed. Triple Triad can fall under this category as well. Implementation of all these things needs work as well.

In call of duty, you shoot people. It's been the same for over a decade. They promote playing with friends. Maps and types of in game content aren't nearly as vast as FFXIV. Voice communication makes everything easier. Their promotion is on point. The point A to point B is non-existent. Roam free players... roam free.

I think it's incredibly easy to look back at 1.x with rose-colored glasses. Yoshi managed to salvage it pretty nicely, especially in regards to the storyline, but man... the game was clunky and boring. At a certain point, I only really played it because I knew the game would be revamped.

I think the 1.x format had a lot of potential, and with time it could have been grown into a good game. But you really didn't miss anything by not playing 1.x as it was.

And yet something tells me they lost some key staff members with past MMO experience. Like Tanaka. They could have used his expereince in collaboration with a revised team. Instead they pushed him away.

As much as I may miss certain features from 1.x, my opinion is that he was far too arrogant to accept a co-director or work under a new director. Furthermore, also in my opinion, Yoshida's 1.x was better than Tanaka's.

Miss their actual gear sets bonus and materia system though think most of the problems is the feeling of lack of rewards is just feel bland in comparision /shrug

Since they've been having alot of contest, they should really consider making a content idea contest. Most detailed and interesting type or even a spin/various additions to old/current content kinda wins for the whole community.

I liked back at the end of 1.0 they had those polls to decide changes. I wish we had more say in some of the options so they didn't just wing it with the direction of the game after launch. I like a lot of the stuff posted in the OP and feel like theres way too much focus on dailies, weeklies, and generally time gated content.

I love how people talk as if this was Tanakas fault.
Anyone who actually followed Tanakas work or got the chance to speak to him on Facebook and FF events knows it was SE decision to rush the game because they wanted something to compete with WoWs expansion.

If Tanaka had more time this game would have never been FFXIV A WoW Clone Reborn. I love how everyone here is in such complete denial regarding this.

Again I prefer to play with 1m-2m Loyal FF MMORPG players who understood that FF11 was SEs flagship then running around here with players who think their "toon" is so Kawaii and their silly whispers because this game reminds them so much of WoW.

Players have explained what they need it its not beeing heard people are giving up on the effort instead. Instead its going backwards.

These players(customers) including myself wanted horizontal progression and they did not want this WoW envoirment (check the previous pulls from years ago).
Eventhough the horizontal progression won yes beleive it or not the majority voted for this hence 1.23 etc it still did not go that path.

I'm done with this i just finished reading through 30 pages. People are just arguing for the sake of it and thinking everything currently presented is the most epic thing in MMORPG history men this game still has so many flaws.

Who said change is easy? It wasnt easy during 1.0 to ARR but you can keep everything as it is now just make things harder and not nerf stuff from left to right make things unique and not make gears useless so quick.
Making a whole game on very easy difficulty but not extreme primals and savage content isnt really the way to go. This is why people can complete a whole patch in 1-2 days and then get back to boredom.

This game starts to sounds like routine mainly doing daily/weekly.

The game miss... adventure. I don't know... maybe something like random monsters/treasures/quests on an open map, without special requirement, BiS gear rewards or token rewards. Something absolutly full random. Not even Fate, full random in every ways. Real adventure, nothing really necessary. Some kind on fun appart from the main story. It can sound like treasur maps but in a open map where you don't even know if there will be a monster or not, a pet you can become friend with or a treasure you will discover. Especially nothing critical for craft or fight to avoid blind farm. Random walk with random reward (or danger).

Sub-based MMOs generally rely on time-gated content as a means of keeping a stranglehold on your subscription. Let players grind and gear as fast as they want and that's just all the sooner they'll unsub. If it's not a time gate, it's a RNG-spawn-and-RNG-droprate lottery a la FFXI.

I do think there's some room for improving our current boring "weeklies" structure, but ultimately the devs can't just let people with 8+ hours a day to play "gear everything" and then unsub until new gear comes out. Throttling our progression at the pace they do is kind of annoying though, I'll admit. Getting one upgrade a week that doesn't feel vastly different from the previous item I was wearing is a bit dull. I don't play this game for gear progression, thank god, but I can see where it fails to deliver for those who do.

it sure is easy to sit at one's pc and judge people without knowing the entire story and act entitled. and yea...people need to stop saying we've the "rose glasses" or whatever, i assume that means " tendency to see things in an unrealistic positive light" well...no, sorry I legit enjoyed 1.23b at the end there and I never had so much fun playing a game. I was so excited thinking when they were going to fix the server check lag and give us a lot of content and improve upon it. No weird glasses for me, I had fun and I have tons of videos I made while doing so...

now I feel like I am playing a chore list for a game. I like how we have a ton of views and activity in this thread with 0 dev reply, and I am waiting for the reasons why nothing can or will change, etc.
