FFXIV is not Dyslexia friendly, can we at least get off "One exchange per lifetime"

The game already has a temporary buyback option if you accidentally sell the wrong item to a vendor. (The only issue there is that you have to realize that you did so pretty quickly, since it only lasts until you leave the zone.)

It certainly seems like these sort of items bought with other currencies or trades are just as worthy of such a temporary undo option on purchase, and for the same reasons.



Another minor thing that might help at least sometimes is a slight adjustment to the warning message:
As people have mentioned, that warning that you can't equip an item doesn't help if you're buying it in advance of reaching the right level and therefore expect to not be able to equip it. To help with that, perhaps there need to be two differently worded warnings: one that you get if your current job can never equip that item, and a different warning if it's for your current job, but it's only due to your level that you cannot equip it.

Then you'd just need to be on the job you're buying for and a wrong selection would say so in that warning. If you were expecting "You'll need to reach level X before you can equip this. Proceed with the purchase now?" and instead saw "Your current job cannot equip this item. Do you really want to purchase it?", that might raise a red flag when you need it to.

When people start bringing up different games having different systems, I really have to hold up my hand for stop. FFXIV: ARR onwards is made from the ashes of the jumbled mess that was FFXIV. We don't know just how much of the jumbled mess still exists. Only the FFXIV team does. Given the time they had to work with to get out what they could for ARR, there's still probably plenty (even if every patch had some sort of fix to those past mistakes). When they say server limitations, I literally hear "we have to go back and see what core problems still exist and see if we can implement it safely without something else breaking." A lot of these other games that have these systems weren't put in post launch. WoW is possibly the only exception, but it also wasn't built on the ashes of a game that was systematically a mess.

My suggestion is, while we can ask for a player error check, simply take your time and read when buying gear. Especially if it's behind weekly lock-outs.

I have extremely poor eyesight too, though not dyslexia. I do what I can. But there are things that ARE very hard to read in the game. What on earth is lost by making things easier to read? What negative impact is there to having a reclaim system similar to WoW? "Well it lets people be lazy" or whatever - fine, but this is an online video game, there's not some big moral battle to be waged here. If you really want to debate that, go to the comment thread on an article about millennials, you'll find plenty of like-minded people there.

This. There is a good bit of the 1.0 source code left in the game because the /entirety/ of ARR was built off of it's desiccated corpse in order to relaunch within a certain time line. This is the reason why so many simple additions for other games are near impossible to implement here, such as increased bag sizes and a PROPER glamour library system that doesn't require the items to be in your bag. So while the idea is admirable, know that it wouldn't be easy to implement in the slightest because of the folly the developers made in keeping the original 1.0 source code.

I yearn for the day we're free of 1.x's code. I dunno if that day will ever come or the difficulty in making that happen but I yearn for it all the same.

I agree on Quickarm and Quicktongue. They could just turn both of those into a single kind of speed materia that works on any job. After that, just need to do something about elemental materia to reduce bloat and bad options, with the goal of nothing being useless.

In this case though I feel that part of the problem in providing a solution to the problem, at least on my part, is a proper diagnosis of the problem itself.

The OP declared that their problem is caused by dyslexia, however based on what I know of dyslexia, the description of the circumstances outlined by the OP and the lack of common dyslexic errors in their typed responses, I am not certain that dyslexia is actually the root of the issue.

As I stated in an earlier post, it really seems like it might be an eyesight problem resulting in the OP having difficulty reading the text because it is too small for them. This is a completely different problem to tackle than dyslexia.

Then again, it may be dyslexia or it could just very well be a lack of patience or paying attention.
It's very hard to pin down what exactly is going on because I feel the OP is being very emotionally reactionary in their posts and descriptions instead of being measured, clear and concise with the problem and it's symptoms.

Well, tbh I don't really see the problem.
Like others have say you have a message telling you it's not for your job. And for materias they have colors depending the type of materia.
It's not a problem in french, the word for quicktongue and quickarms are different. But yet I fail to understand how you can be wrong (except the quick first part) you can still read the tooltip. And at worst there is an order (on mb).
btw I'm not against a refund system if you haven't use the item yet (bond)
I have done a mistake once, that was for my job but wrong accessory (silly me being to fast), haven't complain about it nor ask to change it to gm.

Really, though, what would be the disadvantage to a brief sell-back period. It's not exactly code-intensive. Unless there's the occasional worried purchaser who enjoys eyeing the menus with the intensity of a savage raider looking for subtle telegraphs (hyperbole obviously; there are only obvious telegraphs or none at all), what's to lose?

This thread is a great example of who to stay away from in FFXIV :D.

This thread also has a lot of great ideas that I too would like implemented as QoL. Just an FYI FFXIV people, development teams can work on MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME and what's better, THEY CAN RELEASE MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME. What is this argument about there are better things to prioritise? If you keep putting QoL back then guess what, people will just move back to WoW because it is more accessible to them.

A timed re-exchange for endgame or limited currency items is non intrusive on the rest of the playerbase and would help people with these problems.

Anyway, they could opt to add an exchage NPC or option pretty easily. As long as it has no spiritbond as a requirement for the exchange, it can't be abused.

I never said there was a disadvantage. Given how screwy some of the things are in FFXIV I wouldn't say it would be easy to code and with everything else that needs work I'd rather see effort put into fixing those first. Even if it is something easy and SE decided to implement the function it wouldn't surprise me if they held off till the next xpac. So we would still have a couple of years to live with what we have and for me to kick myself a few more times for not hitting the item box I want with my mouse.

Not "re-exchange" just have a system like WoW where you have a timer counting down which allows you to sell the item for what you paid for it back to the vendor. It would solved all the problems and eliminate any need for a "once off item restore".

Why are people insisting I do not "check and take my time?" I can stare at something for 5 hours and the mistake can still happen. You are right, we do not know, but in the end it is their fault for having that mess to begin with. They shouldn't have rushed 1.0 out like they did, 3.0 felt rushed as far as job balance research, they rush out ideas like no chat in feast. I do not think I am the only one that should be told " take your time with things" I do, I read much slower then other people, and still mix things up. I write slow and still write down letters in the wrong order and have to correct it,same with typing (sometimes I reverse full word order) What you see me post is revised a few times while having a spell check because I can't sound some words properly for the life of me.

Then been doing the same copy/paste stuff for years, on top of excess menu bloat. I do not understand why there is so much excess menu names that are not needed and some menu names do not even tell you what it has. I am just tried of hunting down items though menu mazes, having too much copy/paste icon pictures, and close item names/gear names.

Having different messages like "your current job can't quip this" wouldn't help at all with this situation. The problem was I wanted a healer ring after buying caster ring, I mixed up going up and down, thought I was selecting healer ring because the names are so much alike. I even tried to equip the healer brace on the ring slot because I did not know I bought the healer brace.

A few problems with just the overall they do things.
They list things as DoL (I) and DoL(II) , it took me a while to know what even Do... (To show people more how many issues I have and it is not simply too small UI print, I was typing DoL and not DoW til this point)
Anyways it took me a few years to understand what DoW and DoL was and how to pick from a menu with what I wanted. It was hard for me to go to DoWII for .. Dex melee? jobs, most of the time if I was trying to find gear for say brd or WHM, i would keep picking the wrong menus. FOR A LONG TIME!! I was picking DoW II = WHM.

Then it is how they list gear, they do not do it by job, but by slot. This is another reason I got mixed up. If I wanted a ring for WHM, I could simply gone to the last selection for whm then last selection for BLM. But because they do it by slot, I mixed up where the ring was and thought I really bought the healer ring when I bought the brace.

Some other ideas make it less confusing:
Instead of listing stuff like DoL or DoW, or whatever do this:
Tank
Healer
Melee DPS
Magical range DPS
Physical range DPS

You would have to change ninja to be str to fit this but.. idk what the big deal in making nin dex is to begin with. To me the sloppy menu labeling is simply from the fact they want to retain 1.0 stuff and not consider what it does when listing stuff like that does for ease of access. A lot of menus in the game are vague, and something I always wanted speak about, but was resistant because of the reactions that took place here. It is just being cheated out of the weekly time game broke the camel back sort of speak and would like to see less confusing menu titles. The replies here sadden me, telling me I have to take the time to read when people are not taking the time to understand what I am saying.

Just because I do not show it with my typing does not mean it does not exist, you have no idea how much I read, reread and edit, why do you think all my posts have edits so much? Has nothing to do with text being to small. I am a bit shocked because again, people are not even understanding what was the mistake was. Many are assuming the mistake was the caster ring. It was not the caster ring, I wanted the caster ring, I wanted the healing ring, what I did not want was the healing brace. I do not like defending lack of access because of 1.0, they should be able to sort out menus to be clearer. They made a change to the GC menus in 3.xx that MADE THEM CONFUSING! so if they can make menus more confusing, they can change it to make it less confusing. Why in the hell did they do that anyway? wish they reverse it/ never made that change. To text size UI change is not going to make "material" and materials" confusing and knowing magically what each means. They both have materials for gear? WTH where they thinking in doing that????????????????????????????

I do not think that is how it is exactly, at least for me. It is more of a processing of information and recalling it comes out. I do not "see" the word, letter for letter at times (as far as processing it) It is more like I take in the full word as an image. If it looks too similar and near eachother as another, it might as well be the same word. Like this:

What I see is "place inside iddy/place outside iddy/place outside iddy" I do not know what it intends on what spot is what esp with how iddy is laid out with the other zone. I can see north = up, south = down, so west and east is flipped depending if I am leaving iddy or exiting. Since the reference is flipped and I get confused what east and west is to begin with, I got no clue what leads to what. I do not know what they intend, I still don't The topic titles of those menus is the same word to me, but one has a S at the end. I have no clue how those words label what is under them, so I menu cycle till I find what I want. Both of those words have no meaning to me and do not tell me what is there. I can read "east" and "west" fine, it is knowing what both means and those meanings sometimes gets flipped leading me going the wrong way. Another example is I needed call my vet today and the phone number and fax started out the same (phone number on top) Like this very situation, I thought I was reading the top but ended up putting the last 4 numbers in my phone from the fax number line. With this in game situation, I flipped the locations where the healing ring was, and the healing brace was (one being above the caster ring, one being below it)

People keep telling me it is my fault for not reading a message, this fact does not do anything for the situation...
I do not know how many times I need to say:
1. I wanted a caster ring, I baught caster ring, happy.
2. I wanted buy healing ring
3.I thought I did buy healing ring
4. I go to equip the "healing ring" on my healer then I get a message "This item can't be equipped in this slot""
5. I tried it 2 or 3 more times, confused why it was not working
6. Highlight the item that was supposed to be my healer ring and my heart sank that I had brace item.
I lost a weekly time gate because the game punishes you for having information processing problems. I have enough problems with Dyslexia as is, and it is part of the reason I can't even comprehend the story of this game. It overloads me esp with the "busy work" side quests, and can't remember how to tie the main story and disregard the side stuff. I only understand chunks here and there and leads me forgetting what the story is completely. I do not know why my character, warrior of light started this path to start and help people, despite doing it... 10 times? I am not sure, more then 8 though, getting to lv 17 part for retainer access. I only remember/recall the dragon war part, why we fight niddly (another name I can't process fully as I try recall letter to letter) I also know I did not like the force shoe in to get us into ishagard < no idea if I got this right (looks like I just added an A in my version)

As I tried to explain earlier in this post, when buying stuff and trying to find items, I mix up the meanings of DoL, DoW... .. DoM... um..? I think there is a 4th.. idk.. but I mix them up a lot when I was new and took a couple of years to sort them out enough to know what those hide behind menu selections. I also mix up the 3 main materias by name (det,crit,DH) but because the stat name is very different, it never effected me as far as problems, even though they use the same icons as well. However once you do the skill speed and spell speed ones, those names are too close a like, the name of the materia is too much alike, and the stat bonus name is too much alike. This is why my BLM had skill speed on it once, because I thought I did buy spell speed. It takes me a lot of effort to make sure I have the right one, and it does get mentally tiring after a while.

Those map markers are to help me distinguish < (had to enter this word in google 6 times to get me to the word I needed) where is where. Also having 2.0 area (I say 2.0 not... whatever the 3 letters people use because they are gibberish to me) under HW section still throws me off and leads for me taking a bit of time to teleport to the right place. Looking closer I see why, it is because both the HW and 2.0 are named alike, while having the same icon next to it while being under the same teleport section. I really do not like that and hope they change mixing different expansion areas under the same listing like that.

Another problem I have in this game, but more rare in RL is it happening with numbers (even though I just gave an example of that) I need.. breaks after sets of 3, so it takes a lot of effort knowing how much exp I need when someone asks me. When I first got into HW my answer would be, 34xxxxx i can't read the rest. Now for SB its easier because I know it is out of millions so I can say oh i got 3.4 M so 7.4 to go for level 70.

But they spent time to make a change to make menus MORE CONFUSING! I rather have them fix the coding, and address functionality issues more then releasing the same boring treadmill every 2 months. They had years to address this "poor coding" defense and they keep putting it off, so at this point my view it is all on them for putting it off for so long. In the end it is up to us to tell them about problems with the game, so something can be done about it, not sit back and never say anything because "oh game has poor coding so it is ok to have basic accessibility problems.

I guess I just really don't want to continue excusing the lack of staple functionalities that other MMOs have tended to have upon release, as early as 13 years ago, be it buyback, zoneless swimming, quick-travel via map rather than (primarily) a list, right-click functionality (without needing a context menu) on items and inventory, or whatever else. Half the time it feels like there has to be some significant portion of the staff that sit around commenting at every meeting, "but is it reaaaaaallllyyy necessary?" to an extent that likely fills more than half the time any of their vetoed coding additions would have taken. Yes, there's a balance to what ought be developed next, and this tiny change would be only a minor convenience boost, but I'm just so tired of things skipping the obvious or making do with something that would clearly require more work to redo later than to do right in the first place (see PvP glamour).

What's funny about this problem is the dev team of FFXIV were happy to receive an accessibility award from Ablegamers charity when they reviewed the game with disabled peoples in mind. It's surprising how they are not thinking about disabled people anymore.

woah.. a lack of a feature catering to a specific problem is NOT a lack of trying to be inclusive. So they should throw away or renounce their award (publicly so you get to watch them do it) given by a charity who likely gave it to them for a reason because we've found something they either didn't foresee or decided not to accommodate for?

We already have a buyback system in place. Why make a new term? It is buyback but instead of gil you get the token or tomestone.

I'm not demanding you or anyone else use my term for it. I'm unsure why you're correcting using a synonym or equivalent term.

I do agree with the request to have the menu order of items changed to group them by class/job rather than item type. I'm able to read perfectly well, but it's still a pain to have to search through 6-7 lists of similarly named items when you're just wanting to buy the whole collection for the one job.

O.K, unless I'm missing something, OP wanted the Healing Ring and Caster Ring.

WHile this might show what it looks like, I personally can still read it just fine, longer words I do have to pause to work out and words I'm unfamiliar with I have no chance, but it isn't impossible to read. However, saying that, I can see why people who are unfamiliar with words (i.e. having dyslexia from birth, so they have never seen words how they are meant to be) can have trouble reading it.

As for OPs suggestion, if they add it they add it, if they don't, they don't. I don't care either way, but as a suggestion, if you know you are buying a piece for a particular job, then switch to that job before you make the purchase. It's how I do things and the popup always gets me to stop and check the item.

Also every disability has different levels of it. Just because someone you know has slight dyslexia does not mean everyones' dyslexia is the same.

I have never been tested for dyslexia but I have sometimes read letters and words wrong. Maybe everyone does that. Things that have helped me:

- Read the entire tooltip before buying anything. Does the materia give Skill Speed or Spell Speed? Does the item have any Mind or Int on it? Is the item for the correct slot (have the character screen open to check)? How many of this item do I already have?

- Swap to the job you want to equip the item on and compare the item with what's currently equipped.

- Read all popup windows! Seriously, this is a good habit to get into.

What the game could do to help:

- Allow returning gear bought with capped tomestones (or weekly tokens) as long as the item has 0% spiritbond.

- Color code main stats in tooltips and roles in item names. For example: Genta Bracelet of Healing, Genta Ring of Casting, Genta Bracelet of Aiming

Snow said they accidentally bought the healing bracelet from Omega Normal, the picture shows the accessories for Omega Normal and the bracelet has not been bought. If you were going to make a fuss about this, then you would show that you did infact buy it by mistake, and not show that you do not own one. If they just tossed it, then that, to me, also seems silly as you can sell it for seals later and the other, quite nice benefit, is it can prevent you from mistakenly buying another one, since you can only have one on your person at a time, it will be impossible to buy it again.

I'm not saying buying the wrong thing isn't an issue, but when what is being said, and the picture evidence don't line up, it shows something is amiss, whether that's information that's been left out, or just lying.

Now, if they do have dyslexia, they might have bought the casting bracelet (cannot confirm/deny), mistaking it for the healing one, which means they would have the loot that they originally wanted.

It just shows whether or not you're currently carrying one. Didn't they mention putting it on their retainer? If that's true then they could have bought it and that image would still be accurate.

You need to read the thread. The OP has stated what is is like for her to read in the game because there is no dyslexia accessibility. She has stated she can sit there for hours and have no clue what something says.

I have dyslexia and dont have this problem. Maybe take a moment to verify you getting the correct item?

Just need to have the patience to double check you are getting the right item. I've made the mistake(with Esoterics when they were the capped tome), but I learned from it to slow down when buying items like that. Does it suck? Sure, but it's not the end of the world. Learn from the mistake, and do better checks next time. Plus, as others have mentioned, there is a pop-up that appears if it's an item not for your currently equipped class that requires you to confirm you want it by clicking the check box, then clicking purchase.

If you were going to make a fuss about this, then you would show that you did infact buy it by mistake, and not show that you do not own one. If they just tossed it, then that, to me, also seems silly as you can sell it for seals later and the other, quite nice benefit, is it can prevent you from mistakenly buying another one, since you can only have one on your person at a time, it will be impossible to buy it again.

I'm not saying buying the wrong thing isn't an issue, but when what is being said, and the picture evidence don't line up, it shows something is amiss, whether that's information that's been left out, or just lying.

Now, if they do have dyslexia, they might have bought the casting bracelet (cannot confirm/deny), mistaking it for the healing one, which means they would have the loot that they originally wanted.

I was buying that caster ring for BLM when I mistakenly hit the healing brace when I wanted the healing ring for my healer as well. The names are too much alike. When I contacted a gm, they will not exchange it because something I did in HW.

1. Get off the one time per lifetime item fix per account, there is no reason to be that strict in this game. 1. No gear is that valuable to warrant that, 2. it is too easy to make mistakes with how names of gear and vendors are set up, it is too easy to click on something you do not want.

In wow it gives you a 2 hour time span when stuff like this happens to exchange it back. The thing in HW would of saved me from the same headache, and this happened to me before in 2.0 as well, but I did not use the 1 trade per lifetime thing because it was not worth something like that for that item. I am really sick of trying to read names under a microscope, take a lot of time doing so, and still get it wrong with heavy penalties. I actually did meld skill speed in my blm once because of this issue and had to go remove it at bonefire place thing.

I wrote ingame suggestions before on this issue and back then when the 2.0 situation happened. Back then, I could not find someone to post for me. Now that it has happened again on another time gate item, it reminded me of this problem.

That is what it looks like, the gear simply has a timer on it for the countdown of how long left you can exchange it. I noticed I got the wrong item within a minute when it was not going in my ring slot. This is a disability access issue, and I thought people be more considerate. I will say it again, I wanted the caster ring, I wanted the healing ring, the item forced on me that I did not want is the healing brace.

Why are people telling me I need to read some warning slower, or some name slower when it does not apply to me? Telling me I need read better when no one is taking the time to understand what I am saying?The pop up does not help in this case at all, why do people keep coming to it?

Ofc it is not shown in the top picture!it was not in my inventory, Why would I keep an item on me I do not want? Game has too much inventory issues to be carrying around useless gear. I said I put it on my 70 WHM retainer to equip because that is the only way to use it, you can't even sell it for seals which is annoying, and GMs refuse to exchange it, so it goes on retainer.

Not not really help with healing ring vs brace, names are too much alike. You are actually repeating something I said, your advice is why I can see the difference of the crit,det,DH materias. However the skill speed and spell speed is too hard to read. The effect is too much alike, the icons are the same, and the name of them are too much alike.

Those map markers are to help me distinguish < (had to enter this word in google 6 times to get me to the word I needed) where is where. Also having 2.0 area (I say 2.0 not... whatever the 3 letters people use because they are gibberish to me) under HW section still throws me off and leads for me taking a bit of time to teleport to the right place. Looking closer I see why, it is because both the HW and 2.0 are named alike, while having the same icon next to it while being under the same teleport section. I really do not like that and hope they change mixing different expansion areas under the same listing like that.

Why do people say this over and over again? There is no pop up saying "You are buying a healing brace, not a healing ring, are you sure you want a healing brace?" The wrong job pop up has nothing to do with this situation so why do people keep bringing it up? I am not talking about buying wrong job gear, I am talking about being forced to keep healing brace when I wanted healing RING! I was close to doing the same motions in Chiramu's sketch<spell check fix, this very hard word for me, at this point.

For weekly gating items, and a once a lifetime refund on account? Yes SE should be held accountable. How come wow can have timers on gear and this one does not? The gear is not special, it will be replaced in 2 months, and the brace was outdated in 2 weeks of its release. This means there is no justification on having 1 lifetime reimbursement on the account. Also why did SE make a change to GC menu to make it more confusing? So they can make changes to make it less confusing when they did a change to make it more confusing. Again, you have no idea how long I sit there trying to read these *** names and still get it wrong? I hate it.

This is the only game I have this high degree of trouble (others it is simply not being able recall names of things well but i can recognize everything.) Here it is like they try be confusing, too much copy/paste with item names and item icons, but I guess you have to be when you are making everything outdated every 2 weeks -3 months. Same with the teleport lists, they use those crystal shapes for too much different places, and hard for me to see where to go, the memory markers is to help me recognize them but even that does not work all the time. The only thing that truly saves me is being able right click to see map off the teleport menu, otherwise I be going to the wrong places consistently.

To all those people saying "learn to read!", just because someone presented his idea poorly does not mean that the idea itself is bad. You are opposed to something that developers from others games (this feature is not exclusive to WoW) figure it out without chances of being abused, also, the more you reduce the necessity to contact the customer support the better for everyone.

The game already has buyback and probably the only reason is not extended to what Snow_Princess is asking it's due problems/limitations with the UI (while functional a lot of menus like turn in collectibles or retainers are in need of a revamp) itself.

The dark blue on black text for things like the loot from Deltascape is really difficult to read - and I have corrective lenses. I mean, look at this!

I can see how it's easy to make a mistake. They don't make it any easier with icons that look virtually identical. Raptor sinew and Persimmon leaf sushi anyone? To say nothing of the items needed for the anima relic. I get that you're on a super-tight schedule devs, and this is probably the LAST thing on your loooong list of to-dos, but it would help the players so much - even those who don't struggle with visual issues.

And I agree for a system that lets you exchange items. I think maybe the reason such a system isn't in place is because it would take time to create and there are probably millions of items that would need to be cataloged. It's not something that could realistically be done in the span of a couple months.
