I pretty much said the same thing. If you are going to tell people to skip everything, then why get upset at an item that lets them do just that? Remember when Heavensward was announced and people got upset over having to beat all of 2.0 to access it? Guess what those people were told?

"If you don't like it, then don't play."
"Just skip all the cutscenes, you'll get to the end faster."
"I did all this content, thus you have to as well."

You are not buying something that will make your character stronger than any other player out there.
You are buying time.

That is not considered pay to win. Because even if the player did not buy the jump potion it changes nothing.

I can't speak for others, but I personally have not ever told anyone to skip a CS and I don't mind and encourage that they watch every single one. However, I would wager that most who are against JPs have a similar mindset.

Now I have a question that I am wondering about: How many new subscribers after JPs are implemented will ask about what happened to General Raubahn's arm? Sure you can just tell them, but then also try to remember the emotions you experienced while watching those final cut scenes. Could you feel his pain as your own? Emphasize with it? Those 100 MSQs were arduous, painful, drawn out, and TOTALLY worth it.

I am really hoping these potions make it into the game for us to purchase. I have quite a few alts that I would use these on. :)

I understand they may not make it live, that's ok too, BUT my true hopes are that they make it live , most definitely!!! :D

The only concern I have would be wether or not using jump potions would unlock roulettes because to run a dungeon (regardless what it is) to have no knowledge of it or how to play your class can be a very unfun experience for others.

Not knowing a dungeon/trial is fun, learning it for the first time and discovering it is fun, maybe you're one of those slob that waits on video to be up on youtube because you're insecure when doing new things, but im not.

As for people that don't know how to play their class, they are every where, even today, level 60 ppl don't know how to play properly, so that won't change even with the jump potion.

People run dungeons for the first time all the time, most of them without looking up the dungeon beforehand. Somehow we all muddle through. Actually on Tuesday we're all about to do it again, all of us will be running a couple dungeons and a trial for the first time. I suspect we'll be ok.

Better idea: a challenge for the naysayers that are opposed to jump potions.

Make an alt, level just one job to 60, do the MSQ up to the current end, AND WATCH EVERY SINGLE CUTSCENE AS THEY COME UP RATHER THAN AT THE INN.

If you do it, then CONGRATULATIONS! You will be living proof that jump potions might not be all that necessary, but it you so much as look at your main, you have to delete it. Now go! Go! Go!

Heyheyheyheyhey. No need to be mean. I have no problem with anyone learning a dungeon/trial/raid or anything. The point I was making, or trying to, is that when you are leveling up a class you learn how to play your class as you go through the dungeons and trials available.

I've made statements before that I am a newer player and I do rather enjoy playing dungeons and trials without prior knowledge of it and learn to do said things while running it. The main difference however between me being new to an instance and someone who uses a jp and is also new, I know how to do the basic functions of my class/job where as the guy using the jp may not and that is what would make a run unfun.


I have done all the AR Trials synched without video aid (yet to do Ifrit, Shiva and Laviathen Ex though)

You can run Ramah Ex all you want and learn the mechanics of the fight to its entirety but if you do not know how to play your job it frustrates everyone else.

The other concern I suppose I would have is wether or not a player would have access to the Novice Network. The NN is an incredibly good resource for information with mostly helpful advice and good people. I would want people who start and use a jp to have access to that so that they can learn their job because when is was learning mine it was rather confusing to get a good rotation going until a mentor helped me come up with a proper rotation. But as it stands you lose access to NN once you enter Ish gard so I would think that the criteria would need to be redefined in some way to help novices do use jps.

I felt nothing as it is a videogame with about as much of an impact on me as a cartoon has. I'm not saying it was bad, it is a great story, but not everyone is "moved" by things like this. My real life is to hairy for me to be moved by things that aren't real.

In hindsight. people who don't know about it won't care about it. and they won't miss it. They may have missed out on it, but it doesn't matter if they didn't care to begin with.

I fail to understand how this proves anything. Not everyone desires an alt, and I believe many who are against JPs just don't want brand-spanking new subscribers to have access to them, and are ok with alts using them.

Saying not everyone is moved by the scenes in the game works as much against your argument as for it. If you and others see it as nothing more than a cartoon, that is fine. That has no bearing on the fact that it is a story, and many people are moved by them in one format or another. That is why they exist.

But people should be forced to go though it anyway coz you do care? How does that work?

Ok I've come across plenty of sprouts and barely any of them has watched cutscences simply because they want to catch-up to everyone else... Many of which I suspect will give up bothering before they even touch Heavensward.

Sure but that happens now, so clearly jump potions are not responsible for this behavior.

Players exist at all levels of skill and competence. Some people can go through (for instance) PotD from 1 - 60 on a job they've never touched and figure it out just fine as they level at a frankly breakneck pace. Some people will never get it no matter how long they have to learn. The fact that group B exists shouldn't affect decisions because nothing will cause them not to exist.

But that wasn't his point. People who don't care about the story aren't ever going to care. They just want to play the game itself or play with friends. The jump potion allows them to skip ahead to what they fancy while not impacting those who do wish to experience the story.

On a separate note, the jump potion is a necessary evil due to how content is structured in FFXIV. You cannot expect new players to grind through two full games worth of dated content just to access the actual relevant stuff. This is especially true when alternatives exist which offer their respective endgames significantly faster. Consider the story an equivalent grind, albeit still less daunting, to Black Desert or Blade & Soul's upgrade grind. If you aren't interested in the content itself, nothing will make it better. I, for instance, found B&S incredibly dull and only sporadically touch BDO because friends of mine play it. I wouldn't ever play either competitively because the grind to relevant gear bores me. For those disinterested in XIV's story, they feel the same way. The benefit XIV has though is gameplay and story are not connected. You can fancy one without the other. XIV needs to appeal to all potential players, and a jump potion allows for that. It further alleviates the dev team's likely concerns of expanding story content. After all, with a skip option, most people going through the story properly actually want to. Therefore, they won't need to consider trimming down quests or character interactions because some players may get bored.

Ideally, they would go back and adjust requirements or some such to remove the issue of gated content entirely. But I suspect that is a costly venture or one they simply aren't willing to explore since it would upset the linear storytelling XIV focuses on. So we are left with a jump potion. I do think it was a mistake not bundling it with Stormblood though. I suppose that will happen come 5.0.

And that works against your argument. Those moved by story won't buy the Jump Potion so.... who cares? Not me, its a videogame. If I was new I would skip it then read a wiki. I'd be like, "Pretty cool." Just like 1.0, I and many who joined in beta for 2.0 never did a lot of those missions. I missed it all, and when it came up I read a wiki and watched a few CSs on youtube. Those who care don't have to skip, those who just want to rock Red Mage can. Its an option, not a gun to your head.

It's called "walking a mile in a newbie's shoes". Also with the Jump Potions, their plan from what I saw was to force you through the Cliff's Notes version of the main story, which given how much there is, doesn't necessarily mean it'd take "seconds"....not really a bad thing.

As for the job-based jump potions, as long as they have them like WoW has with level boosts involving something scenario-based to provide some basics, then I'd be in full support of it for those "brand-spanking new subscribers" mostly because there is no possible way that you can outlevel stupid.

I dislike jump potions, but I can see the reasons for them. Players joining at StormBlood will have 4 years worth of game to work through just to play current content with their friends. That's a bit of a mountain.

The jump potions do nothing more than allow new players to start at the same base level as everyone else. They don't get the same gear or collectibles as a veteran has, but they can play with their friends from the start. It's not pay to win, it's pay to play with friends.

From my experience, those who "just want to play the game", skip the cut scenes and don't care about the story are the least likely to stick around long term. Half of the people I play with skip cutscenes, and have been playing since 2.0 launched. They just ask me when something comes up they care about lol.

I just wait for the day when more potions will hit the game. Can't wait for "max level", "all content including savage cleared" and "full BiS" potions. That would make our playtime much more fun.

and there are end game savage raiders world firsters who have already claimed to skipping cutscenes cause they couldn't care less about the story.

You may not be able to fathom this with your very narrow view of all the things this game offers to many different types of people, but the story is not important to a lot of people. That's just a fact. People who quit after a month, and people who probably have logged more hours into the game than you have.

4.0 is pretty much all but here. There'll be a 5.0 and maybe a 6.0. Do you expect a new player sit through many years of content to get to the current content, even when no one is doing the outdated content? And for what? Because you think the game is only about the story it presents? Are you absolutely fine with the developers needing to make content like relics and other stuff going back to old content just to keep them alive so that new players can get through the story? I'll say this; constantly trying to keep old things alive for the sake of story progression is not a good decision. People skip cutscenes all the time because they just want to play what the game has to offer and give no Fs about what the story is. Even friends of these players, who are willing to help them get caught up, are going to become more reluctant of helping because they have to halt progression on their own characters to help another player who is behind and they don't want to waste time playing through old content over and over again. You are still getting your story. People are just getting an expensive option to skip the fluff and start raiding with their friends.

WellI dont think starting players should be able to get jump potions, I think that if you have one class to 50+ you should be able to get a jump potion. Now this won't stop the problem of players jumping all other classes to 50 and having no idea how to play their Job, but maybe some sort of mandatory dungeon of learning to take it to normal dungeons?


As for story potion, I wouldn't mind it skipping arr, only because the 3 jobs locked behind content.

Actually, you will often find those who skip among the most dedicated. Hardcore raiders may take breaks, but they resub immediately following the launch of new content. A primary complaint amongst the endgame community as a whole, regardless of skill level, is the lack of meaningful content to keep them occupied. As someone who does enjoy the story and who also raids, I appreciate where they come from. If you aren't doing Savage, the game is absurdly easy. Examples being healers having to DPS in dungeons lest they stand around doing nothing or tanks pulling the room just to feel like actual tanks. Nevertheless, statistics do not agree with you. The unofficial census done by Luck Bancho has shown a steady and continuous decline in active characters since January. Is not coincidental this coincides with poorly tuned raid tier, the disastrous 3.1 patch and the overall eased difficulty of content-- nevermind a lack of it? In fact, the lowest drop in active characters throughout 2016 came when The Creator launched.

Putting raiders aside a moment, the largest server is one wholly dedicated to people roleplaying their own separate stories. I know plenty who couldn't give a damn about the MSQ, yet adore the lore itself to create their own. People can enjoy a game without fancying certain aspects of it. Do you care for raiding or crafting? They too are apart of the game. If you don't have any interest in them, it wouldn't matter to you people do. I'm someone who finds enjoyment throwing myself at Savage for hours in the hopes of bettering myself. A friend of mine who used to play quit because she got fed up with RNG and dungeon difficulty. She wanted something super easy whereas I jump into the hardest challenges XIV has to offer. We both played for completely different reasons. A lot of people do.

My issue is the amount of content being skipped. If people don't care for the story that is fine. They already have the option to skip cut scenes, and there is nothing I can do to stop them. However, I don't like the idea that a brand new subscriber can just buy their way into Stormblood and a lv60 job. While there is nothing I can do if someone wishes to skip the story, I do care about new players getting some clears under their belt before grouping with the rest of the player base. It doesn't have anything to do with earned gear, levels, or skill gaps. It's just actual in-game experience.

I am 100% sure that these potions are appealing to new subscribers and realize this is a good thing, but I fear the type of players they appeal to. I know there will always be the bad apples, but it is the ratio that concerns me along with the bigger invitation to bring them in. Knowing that a mountain of content rests between a new player and veterans without question would keep many of them at bay. Now? I care a lot about the integrity of this game and this franchise, even if many of you don't. I won't apologize for that, or being passionate anything Final Fantasy related.

This has not been my experience. As I have pointed out before, more often than not, players that leave don't come back. If your experience reflects differently, then I can understand where you are coming from.

Define for me "meaningful". As in content that means something to the player? Or are you talking solely savage content? As so many describe it as the content that means anything. In either case, there are so many things to do in this game. Whether it is raiding, absorbing the story, crafting/gathering/fishing, breeding chocobos, etc. There is a lot of content that appeals to many different kinds of players, so I hope you understand how difficult it must be to keep releasing content to the point that the entire player base is content. If you want the devs to focus on more savage content to keep players challenged, I find that is a little unfair to those who have no desire to be there.

Doesn't agree with me on what account? I don't recall mentioning anything in regards to an increase or decrease in player characters. In fact, all I have been talking about is players leaving. I want more subscribers just like the rest of you, but I also want to keep the current players aboard as well.

I do enjoy crafting, and gardening, and gathering. I spend a lot of time doing non-combat activities. But yes, I love combat too. Both the casual for when I feel like easy stuff, and the extreme to test my skills and become even better. I do enjoy creating my own lore for my character. I know I can't expect people to enjoy the same things I do, and I am not that selfish. I will recommend it to those who are burned out doing any one thing over and over again, but that is as far as that goes. Ultimately, I would love many, many, many more subscribers IF they can appreciate the game and what these devs do. And with the potions, I just fear we will get a flux of players who don't. Perhaps it is an irrational fear, but it is still there. I don't want the a poor decision to be made that jeopardizes the longevity of the game, or creates a player base of people who don't care about what makes FFXIV a legit FF game.

Enjoying the game doesn't mean a person has to enjoy every aspect of the game. You know that, so I'm not even sure why you'd use that as an argument.

Ok so you're worried about people simply skipping too much. I get and understand that. It's still the player's choice if they want to skip it all or play normally and if the potions are going to be as pricey as Yoshida claims, it'll deter people who will skip on a whim. Quality of players could be an issue, yet we still get people who don't know the basics or refuse to adapt, even though we have a novice hall dedicated to teaching said basics. Outside of cheating and trolling people, there really isn't a "right" way to play this game. The skip potions are not infringing on other players who want to experience the story firsthand.



Times change and people change with it. If fans had their way, Final Fantasy would never evolve past Final Fantasy 7 or this very game would never ever get any nerfs. Things change over time and games have to as well if they want to stay relevant and appealing. You don't like the idea of people just skipping the beginning, but I'm afraid it's going to come whether we want it to or not. I truly don't believe that the image and story of the game is going to get affected by this.
