Yup. Final Fantasy VII remake, the new Nier game, etc. The linked slide set (slide 11 specifically) actually lists examples.

No gotchas, no framing, was just a genuine question. (I'm not a bad-faith actor, I say what I mean and mean what I say, no more and no less). With your MMO experience, you should be wary of companies putting mounts in the cash shop that belong in the game. It's fine if they are "out of character" mounts like the FF7 bike, but this mount is clearly from a raid, and should be a reward for completing said raid in higher difficulty, like mounts in the past, not from cash shop.
Why? Because it never ends there.
Realistically, though, I think the only way I can see that they could've added Cruise Chaser to the Alexander raid series as an in-game reward would've been to have it be something you could purchase with the Alexander Exoplating item that you can sometimes get from A12S, and which is otherwise only used to make the Alexander miniature housing item. (So, y'know, a largely useless crafting material.) They could have you trade in 3 Exoplating over in Idyllshire to get the mount. And while I wouldn't have objected to that approach, I suspect there'd be a lot of complaints about having to go back and farm A12S (and fight over Exoplating drops) for the mount, or about how new mounts should be tied to new content, etc. And I feel like it would have to be something like the exoplating; you can't just make it the end-of-tier mount drop, because A12S already drops the Arrhidaeus mount. (With the evil tooltip that will give you "Rock Me Amadeus" earworm.) A4S drops the Gobwalker (which is one of the best mounts). And while A8S doesn't have a mount it drops, it wouldn't make a ton of sense to put Cruise Chaser (from A11) as a drop in A8S, a tier before it even appears.
Now, they could also have made it a drop at the end of TEA -- that would work thematically -- but I suspect there would have been a lot of complaints about such an iconic boss (and eagerly-awaited mount) being locked behind Ultimate content, and people bemoaning that Ultimates already get a really distinctive weapon glamour and a title, etc. Or that they already cleared TEA, but now they have to go back and farm it in hopes that they win the drop for the mount. (Or that locking it behind TEA would only encourage the business of selling clears, etc.)
Personally, I've wanted this mount enough that if they put it behind TEA, I'd go make a static and start progging. I mean, I want to do that anyway, but I'd start trying to do it right now if that was where the mount was. I went and cleared DR savage almost solely because I wanted the dumb dog mount, after all. (Though I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, and am perpetually sad that the Secret Cow Fight that happens between Trinity Avowed and the Queen doesn't exist in DR normal.)
But I suspect I am not in the majority there.
What I actually think might've worked well would be to release it during the Make It Rain event, and put it in the MGP vendor for something like 2 million or 2.5 million MGP, or whatever. That would've made it something you needed to put some effort in to obtain, would've been tied to content that's still relevant (because the Gold Saucer is always relevant), and would also have been accessible. Plus, the mount's even golden-colored, right?? But I'd bet you that same 2 million MGP (okay, more like... 1.67 million, since that's all I have in my MGP wallet) that someone would've started a thread complaining that Cruise Chaser should be tied to Alexander content, and that putting it in the Gold Saucer was a travesty.
Because we, as a playerbase -- like most MMO playerbases -- are not a homogenous blob, and no matter what choice a company makes someone is going to be annoyed by it. And probably also will post that annoyance on a forum or Reddit.
Should have been a 3mill MGP cost if they couldnt develop it in time for TEA. Or at the very least should have been a limited time reward before pushing it straight to mogstation.
My problem is it went straight to mogstation. I am still going to buy it, however I would rather have mogstation mounts to be something that isnt already in the game. Things that are already in the game turned into mounts should be new rewards for content or golden saucer rewards because we know golden saucer desperately needs new mgp sinks.
It's not about not having enough time. It was always going to go to the store if it's at the store first. What I mean is it was a mogstation project from the start. It was never going to be an MGP event or anything else. Most likely the store team were making it first which is why it never turned up ingame for anything. It's whatever... the 4 seat car mount is coming in a few weeks anyway. And THAT IS in the game.
Fair enough. And I've been vocal in multiple threads that I would much more liked it in-game through whatever means (minus being a feast season reward) but I also don't see the problem with a mount for €21 either but I respect people being upset about it. There isn't a need to put down people who share a different opinion on it - on either side.
Yes im going to use "slippery slope" here but look, where is the line going to be drawn?
CC is iconic boss (model) from Alexander raids (and prev FF games). Maybe not for everyone, but certainly for people playing in HW or doing TEA (and the music specially!)
So I ask:
Will we see Eden 4 boss-wroom (you know what I talk about) next on mog? Will we suddenly see 8-seater Nidhogg there? What about E10 boss few expansions from now?
No? Why not!?
If CC is okay why wouldnt I be allowed to ask for E10 boss? Then I can just say "Just dont buy it lel" and "nah fam its ok, you are just using slippery slope. Its just 2 bosses bro its fine. It wont happen again. At least we arent WoW!"
This is actually something Yoshida has cited as a specific reason it's been so difficult to find battle content designers. There is simply far more opportunity and money in the mobile industry, especially in Japan. It sucks to hear for most of us considering how awful and scummy said mobile industry is, but corporate doesn't really give a damn.
It'll be one thing if the Savage raids didn't give you mounts at all. But the issue is they do. So it's not really a thing where you can say they are taking things from the game. Again if you got nothing from savage then you'd have a point.. but you DO get mounts from savage. In order words, this is not a thing you need to be worried about. This CC mount wasn't a thing for 5 years. Tho I feel like people would complain even IF it was behind something in game cause lets be real here. It would NOT have been a simple 3 mil MGP mount or whatever. It'll been in the hardest thing to get with a low drop rate like most things like that ingame. Most likely in feast for top 100. Thats a big IF anyway since it's been 5 years anyway. I stand by it that it was ALWAYS gonna be a store mount if it took 5 years for it to happen.
Cant edit my post right now. But Omxa may not be a feast mount. But it is getting harder to get it as time goes on. Its also a iconic mount as well. Alongside the ADS module, eden..so on. All these are obtainable in game. Selp and cc are the only 2 on the mog.
The Demi-Ozma from Baldesion Arsenal is still available now, though. The content you need to get through to get it is grindy, yes, and getting a BA group together is not trivial (though the various Discords out there make it reasonably doable now), but the reward is still available now; no matter how many people clear the Arsenal and get the mount, it continues to be available. The same is true with the Cerberus mount from Delubrum Reginae's savage variant; I have no idea how many of us on my data-center have the Cerberus mount, but I would bet you the numbers are somewhere north of a thousand, and since the reward continues to be available, I imagine the number will only increase.
Conversely, a Feast reward mount is available one time, and one time only, and only for 100 people per data center. If they put Cruise Chaser as a Feast reward mount and only 100 people on Primal could ever get it, and only 100 on Crystal, and so on... I suspect people would have been livid.
Thing is, my point isnt about savage mounts dropping or not. Or how hard it would be to get. Its about iconic bosses with music turned into mounts. Its about using boss models in a way that you try to incite nostalgia, among other feelings, in some players - and try to make them buy it.
For example I know lot of FF8 fans who were literally only doing E12S for the mount because FF8 was their fav FF. Or people doing eureka because they loved FFXI. Or doing bozja for the FFXII stuff. This is what I want from the game. Cool nostalgic mounts in-game to push you do more and help others, not swipe CC (lol) from mogstation.
Anyway im rambling but back to my original point:
Im against usage of boss models for mogstation items. To me, Twintania already felt bit "Eh!?" because it was coils boss thro recruit friend reward (so essentially paid, but not directly). I dont want to see the trend continuing. I dont mind about mounts in mogstation, just make them original, new, not re-used assets and maybe never seen in-game before.
For example a mount that I really dont have issues with in Mogstation is Fat Cat. Yes the minions been there since ARR, but it doesnt feel like middle-finger to see it in store as a mount like I feel when CC is.
And again, if CC is okay why would they stop there? Why not add that E4 model next? Why not make leviathan as mount? Or Ifrit? And no, I dont want those as mounts thro in-game either. But at least CC was close to "would be cool to have" because you can do that in PvP and mechanical bosses are bit more lore-friendly as mounts than primals..
I just hope this trend does not continue.
I agree with ZedxKayn, what is the number we should be worrying? 3? 4? Some say its already too late after first one!
If/when its 3 boss mounts are we just going to hear "its too late now, this is going to continue. Please stop complaining you had your chances at CC"?
Like i've said in my previous post. Are we just going to hear people defending this as "nah fam, its just 3 boss mounts. Its not slippery slope at all! (even if it happened 3 times already)"? Spoiler: We are.
Start complaing when they do one in game and 4 or more going to the mog. Being that it seems to be 1 to the mog every 4yrs and the rest kept in game. I feel its safe to say they wont be going that route anytime. Especially with so many people flaming them about it. As I said earlier love that people scream and cry about things they really want being put on the mog. But when its something they don't want or care for suddenly they are quite...
Because people flame them and complain about it, they're unlikely to go down that route, therefore there's no reason to complain?
In the end we're paying customers, if we don't like something that happens to the product we're paying for, we're definitely entitled to voice our displeasure or concern as much as we'd like to.
Unlike what some people (not necessarily you) act like, the game isn't free and the content we're getting (or not) isn't a gift out of sheer generosity from the devs.
People can be vocal against something they don't like, I don't understand the position of defending monetization practices of corporations. Yes, they'll try and sell whatever'll make them money. Anything.
XIV isn't really immune to the route that lead another company to sell a Dark Portal Pass. I wouldn't put it past the company to try and sell BiS raid gear in the mogstation if they thought they could get away with it, with little pushback from the playerbase. Because, yes: at the end of the day, the corporation only cares about profit generated. Especially when the argument isn't "the mogstation should be deleted" but instead "the mogstation should stick to selling items that are unique to itself, like the Nezha wheels, the fatcat, the nimbus, etc... vs. Cruise Chaser, [or Twintania, even with the RaF bit]. I know I'd be pretty bummed if they chose to put a 30+ dollar price tag on a Bahamut mount, and not offering it as a reward in game for achieving/doing something.
tbh, Cruise Chaser in the context of a mount would've been pretty cool for the BLU Alexander Raid achievement, over the Morbol. Or even just a cool mount to add to the Omega line that has no mount reward for BLU. Or, y'know, as a Rival Wings reward for x wins like all the maps have, or for a lot of Wolf Marks to inject more activity into PvP and provide a light chase item to tide over til Endwalker or so on. If there's 0 critique or vocalizations about CC in Mogstation, then I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to sell a Mogstation Bahamut to capitalize off Bahamut's popularity, iconography, and nostalgia with the players who already play the game. But I wouldn't like to see it, regardless.
I don't want to see the game ultimately consumed by it's own monetization practices, things relevant to XIV in the way things like Cruise Chaser/Alexander Raid Bosses in general or Bahamut/Coils bosses etc... should be obtainable via playing XIV. Things like the Lunar Whale, the Nezha mount, Red Hare, etc... are fine by me to be in the mogstation since they aren't so relevantly tied in with XIV as a game and are more nostalgic fluff pieces, or just new things entirely and still look just fine.
Thank you for not grouping me with said people. I am not for the mog or against but I do have my line in the sand the mog has just not crossed it yet. I am also just very black and white on this matter. If you are going to complain about one mount on the mog then complain about them all, cause mog only mounts could have been added in game as well. But this can be said for everything on the mogstation..
To address there first line of your comment. I think we must got our lines crossed. I basically said that people need to vote with there wallets but if enough people still buy it though the vocal will be pushed off as the vocal minority in the eyes of the people making the decision.
But on why the CC is on the Mogstation, its just SE trying to make a profits. Even when combined with DQX its at the bottom of the digital earning barrel which is not a good look for either IP when it comes to who matters to SE(not the devs) the shareholders. I love this game, but if you just watch what other companies are doing it would be quicker and more profitable to put funds into the gatcha/loot box market where you can get a proper whale and not a whale that just spent $30 dollars on a one time purchase per account. CC being on the mogstation is far from the worst case scenario. But the next two quarter earning statements(post boost in pop and post EW launch) will help to see where they go with future mog station products.
TBH I know Yoshi P is not in charge of what goes on the store, but I want to know if they at least consult him for input or did they do there own research into what will be good for what goes up.
If you ever pay attention to SE's quarterly earnings reports, their catalog of mobile/gatcha games produce the most money, not the MMOs or the HD games. Japanese affinity for gatcha is also higher than NA. Whether it's for more pulls or cosmetics, pulling out the credit card to top-up wallets are normal things.
I also think some people live in a bubble and actually think people can't afford these things, which is far from the truth. For all you know 1 in every 3 people in your FC is a whale and you don't even know it. Nonetheless, $29 for me is all my toons get the mount and this game is lasting almost forever according to YoshiP so it's a steal.
We are going to the moon in Endwalkers and in FF4 it was used for that purpose. So if they are referencing FF4 in Endwalkers then would make sense that the whale would take us to the moon. Could be wrong but given how they reference other FF games its a strong possibility.
From what little he says they interact but the mog station head outranks him (and scares him):
https://www.mmorpg.com/interviews/eo...cap-2000106271
So if she says it happens.. I'm pretty sure it happens and unless he wants to try and but heads with higher ups (VERY unjapanese) he just lets it go.Quote:
Q: Will we get a certain outfit from the mog station?
A: Does everyone want that? Not a lot of response from the crowd. So with the Mog Station it is ruled by a powerful empress. More power than I am. She has mentioned creating this uniform and gear would be very difficult and costly. Basically said if everyone promises to purchase this new item we might consider making it. Would you promise to buy it? (The crowd had mixed reactions). I guess I’ll have to do it.
Uh no.
YoshiP's official title at SE is Vice President of Creative Business Unit III (FFXIV/XVI teams), and he is on the Board of Directors. Even if he has the youngest tenure on there, he's at the table with CEO Matsuda. Considering MMO is a large line item on the earnings report, he'll do whatever it takes to keep the profits going.
Either way I'm all for business having the freedom to do what they want, If they want to sell it on a shop. That is well within right to do it. Consumers we can say we are displeased, but as long as we keep paying and sticking around. Our displeasure means nothing to the company. As it should not. Who cares if we are unhappy? That is just how a business is.
Even on boards of directors, there is often discrepancy in levels of power between board members, either by achievement or seniority. Being a board director also doesn't supersede decisions made by the board itself, if they had come to an majority agreement to say, tell Yoshi-P to listen to the Mogstation head. I personally doubt it, but I have seen it happen in other companies before, so i wouldn't dismiss the possibility.
Speaking from my time as a game developer that had a separate team who handled microtransactions though, it's very likely the Mogstation head & Yoshi-P co-ordinate and discuss ideas the mogstation wants to do and Yoshi-P signs off on things to make sure the mogstation team doesn't make something the lead dev team was planning to do, as that would be a complete communication failure between teams and just cause issues.
Alternatively, there's a good chance someone on the main dev team has a 'scrapped idea' list they maintain about outfits, minions or mounts they wanted to create and add into the game but couldn't due to various reasons; whether lore, time or 'not feeling right' based, which the mogstation team then scans through and selects ideas based on without input from Yoshi-P.
One way or another, CC was never planned to be in-game, if the mogstation handn't picked it up, it was very likely to be sitting in the endless void of cut content.
