Fear getting banned for being bad tank.

Today i will stop playing tank (i mostly played as paladin) completely because now i started fear getting banned for being bad tank when i have always hard time staying alive as tank in any group content.

Using self sustain skills and mitigation skills won't help either when once i used them and their effect is gone i 99% of time die on wall to wall pulls and boss fights in any content.

have you tried to small pulls then getting use to it? are you using arm length and reprisal? with tank?

You cannot bet banned for 'being bad', however, it is worth noting that staying alive as a tank relies on 2 people, the tank and the healer, as long as they work together, things will be fine.

General tips are to spread out your cooldowns, do not dump them all in one go and you can use your weaker mits as the packs get smaller.

However, without knowing which tank you play or exactly how you are managing the pulls, it is going to be harder to give specific advice.

some people still forget arms length and reprisal like when I play all other tank then darknight those two are use together and when I play darknight I use reprisal then oblation and then arm length and oblation so ya it does change heavily like you said

OP, self sustain and mitigation are the only things that help other than maximizing your damage by grouping enemies together or using sprint before combat so you can organize all the enemies quickly (and reduce time you're taking hits before the DPS can tear into em). If you're getting taken down AFTER using mits, they're doing their job. Just don't wait to use them until your health is low, unless it's something meant to be used to heal like Equilibrium or Abyssal Drain. Rampart works better with more HP in your bar so your healer has more time to keep you healthy.

You can also move around out of range of the enemies and kite a bit if the enemies are still alive and you're all out of defensive actions. It's not too hard to juke enemies a little and reduce how often they're swinging, which can give your healer time to get vital casts to heal you and DPS a little extra time to finish off enemies.

This isn't the first choice just because if enemies are moving some jobs and players have a harder time maximizing their damage on them, but it's a very effective way to live in a tight spot. Especially with sprint, it can even buy you time for your own cooldowns to return. Just don't out range yourself from your healers as you're dodging around.

Then blame your healer. You are doing nothing wrong. I could heal you even if you do no mitigation, if your healer rather deals damage even if you use mitigation and you still die, it is his fault. Some healer are greedy with damage, if they see you use clemency, it is like a sign for them to not heal you, because you seem newbie then, that you rather heal yourself than to deal damage. Only heal yourself when you drop under 25%.

Wait a few secs of damage before you use a mitigation buff, so you drop under 80% HP at least. Then you can use sentinel, that is usually enough for 10s and your holy sheltron etc. After you could rampart + another tiny one like reprisal, if you are still dropping and mobs above 50% then add arms length or bulwark. If mobs still above 50% after you had 30-35s of mitigation, then your damage dealers probably underperform, tell them to aoe if you notice they do single target... Pop hallowed ground and pull 1 pack less next pull unless it is getting easier.

Food gives you around 10% more HP. Using arms length on boss is fine but if mobs hit hard keep it for them. Usually boss damage is not high.

Arm's Length on a boss isn't helpful as the vast majority are immune to slow.

What you have to remember is, the damage 'reduction' from Arm's Length is the fact the damage comes out slower, so the damage per second you are taking is lower, which makes it easier to heal though. What it does not do though is reduce the incoming damage from a single attack.

Honestly I can kinda relate. I like playing Paladin sometimes but I get worried that I'm going end up on some international blacklist of ‘worst players of all time’ lol. I just like Clemency and Divine Veil don’t judge me lol

First, Lets cover the food thing. Market board food is pretty cheap unless you are buying the newest current food, you can still use last tiers food. Vegetable soup is already cheap, and i'm on maduin which is an overpriced server currently. This makes a large difference in hp pool. Sending 2 battle retainers out for an hour farming mats to sale, after 3 hours u can buy a stack or two of food.

Second, your waiting till after u do combos to pop mits, you should use holy shelltron as u grab the lost mob group. Then reprisal, sentinel, rampart second, while doing your combo, while doing your combo, all mits are ogcd's so u can use them between skills. You shouldn't be waiting 4 gcd's to use a mit. If your hp gets too low use hollowed ground. That is your best mit do not disregard it, Tank invulns don't have to be an oh crap button, they can and are often used regularly on mob pulls. By the time it wears a good chunk of mobs should be mostly dead. Also dont forget like others mentioned arms length also slows the mobs, so thing about when your using it. its best to stack with your lighter mits.

When I pld I use hallowed ground as my first mitigation once I loose about 50- 70% of my hp during a pull and use no other mit b4 it. That way its up for as many pulls as possible since its a complete invuln.

Don't forget passage of arms, it gives a 100% block rate while using it and even if you use it then immediately do something else you get 1 tic of or protection, essentially one round of autos. You can hold it for longer if feel the need to, just pop a holy sheltron first, and then use this and u will take vary little damage, I rarely do more than pop it and brake it right away cause that 1 round does a good chuck of mitigation early in a pull. but if u feel the need to holding it for another tic its still strong.

Third, what is your healer, WHM's strongest heal is benediction, which they want to use when your hp is low. Most good whm's will let your hp drop extremely low for their first heal so they can bene you. Astro also has heal's that do the most healing when you are below 30 or 35% hp. So an ast will also let your hp fall low so they can use those heals.


Your hp shouldn't ever be that low on boss fights unless your getting hit by mechs and getting vuln stacks, and majority of dungeon bosses don't need more than a holy sheltron for the tank busters. Most wont even brake a drk's tbn. You shouldn't have 2-3 mits up at a time against a boss, and make sure you aren't using your big mits towards the end of a boss fight to make sure u have them for trash.

You will not be punished by the Devs for not being "good" at the game.

Don't stack you mitigations, stagger them. Only use the next once the first wears off.

Don't worry about food in expert dungeons, it isn't worth it.

And, just to check, make sure you have repaired your gear.

What tank are you playing OP? Have you tried playing WAR or PLD?

At this point I want to know what your gear is as that is absolutely not the case. Take it from a career PLD.

A few factors to consider:

Dawntrail has some of the hardest hitting trash pulls we've had in a long while. It is possible you are playing correctly and the average healer still can't keep up.

A lot of people save Hallowed Ground for if they're about to die. However, if I know a certain pull does a lot more damage than the rest of the dungeon (the second trash pull in Doma Castle, for instance), I will use it (HG) once I've grabbed all the enemies and they've caught up to me to get aoe'd down. You might wait if you have a whm, because Holy spam will reduce the overall value of your invuln, but I generally just pop it either way. The value of doing this kind of depends on your total dps. A lot of pulls have enemies with lower HP and higher HP. Popping HG at the start allows you to nullify the part of the pull where you will take the most damage: the start. If the smaller enemies are dead by the time it wears off, you've saved your healer a very large amount of work.

Food gives you higher max HP, and that's cool, but regular potions can actually restore a meaningful chunk of your health without expending MP. If a healer is struggling to keep up with damage this can be a lifesaver. This is a bit more accessible at low level, though, where pots are cheap. If you have alchemist leveled and geared it's not a horrible idea to make yourself a stack of hyper-potions, though. :')

Low blow is a defensive cooldown. Technically, so is shield bash (but you probably want to use that GCD on aoe instead so things die faster). That's ~two autos of damage you aren't taking from one enemy. If you know what mob does the most damage in a pack (usually just the one with the largest hitbox), this can help quite a bit. It's more valuable on pulls that have a few large enemies rather than a bunch of small ones.

Lastly, it can be really easy to get lost in your hotbars trying to mash your mitigation skills. A lot of mob pulls tend to have small aoe's go out that can chunk you for a lot of damage, try to keep in that in mind and take your eyes off your HP bar/hotbars every few seconds.

Send 2x battle retainers out for the lvl 93 hunting for Tumbleclaw. It sales for 900 gil on the cheapest server, that nets 144k in 6 hours. Even if its value drops some, its used for pots so, in the past it stays decent gil, u can look at the things your retainer can bring you back. Most DT mats are going for 800-1,000gil some 1k,+ a piece still, if u have more retainers send them for a different mat that sales well so you aren’t flooding 1 market. Retainers are great passive income earners when u use the hunting ventures. Food is great, there isn’t never a reason to not have on you, but unless your in ex/savage, its not gunna make or break your run. It will help it go smoother if you’re having difficulties, and kill mobs faster which helps with mitigation control, but its shouldn’t be saving your life if your above iLvl
I'm gunna assume u don't know what a Ogcd is based on your response, though maybe is just a miscommunication. An OGCD can be used in between regular gcd skills. This is called weaving. U should with “ok” ping be able to weave twice. I used to play on 8mbs and I could still double weave. But as your new to it start with single weaving, which is using 1 ogcd(all defensive ones as well as some offensive ones) between gcd abilities(most weapon skills so your 1,2,3 combo, and your aoe combo as well as other things). Which means u don't need to wait to do that combo to pop any. I don't know if there is a miscommunication, but you are saying that u do the combo first then use defensive cooldowns. Which implies, using your mitigation after 3-4 gcd's. u don't have to wait, just make sure u have all the mobs pulled first, not while pulling. and then use your defensive skills in between each hit of the combo.


As long as u hit all the mobs in a pac with 1 aoe, u can rotate between the mobs and hit shield lob, it generates a lot of enmity, u can also click on the agro list if u use mouse to target them. I just grab the pack the best I can, keep running, and target anything I missed, and shield lob. The I keep running, I continue to SL and rotate between the mobs in the pack as I go. If someone is taking hate off u while you’re running a mob group, that’s a risk they are taking, it’s their responsibility to pay attention to their enmity and if they get enmity try to pass you up so u can grab it. Don’t forget shield lob or provoke will grab it right back to your enmity. The safest thing for a dps to do is wait. But some will do stuff as they run, or just do one thing and test how it goes. But if you’re pulling and they take hate, As long as u get at least 1 aoe or shield lob hit on all of the mobs, it is their fault and they should pay attention. Once u get higher ilvl gear, this will become less of an issue cause you are probably i700+ players in your party. U can also requiescat, and use your aoe magic/combo as your very first action, this will help u establish agro, and heal yourself at the same time.
It's good to announce that you’re going to use hallowed ground/tank invuln skill b4 u pull, because u don’t want to waste it’s benefial effect. I.E. a healer curing through a living dead before it had time to do its job/even proc, a gnb using super b, right after a WHM bene. If the group of mobs was almost dead, and u popped hallowed u wasted it. Use it as your first big mit, that way you’re using it for it’s entire duration. If you use it regularly, you shouldn’t need it as an oh poop button, because it leaves u more mit to play with as the pull goes on. If your healer doesn’t notice and you say it in party chat. It’s on them. Have you always been above ilvl for the content you were doing in the past? The closer u are to ilvl the more they are going to hurt, so if your gear isn’t good/synced things will hurt more, but still should never hurt that much, unless u have a real old piece on the left side.

The only thing I notice that might be off for you is stacking too much mitigation together, Undead. Other than that, your description seems to point out that the healers might need to refine their spell usage to keep you up.

From my WHM example, Cure spam won't be sufficient. They should be starting with Holy stun spam, with Assize, Regen, Afflatus Solace and / or Tetragrammaton to supplement heals in between the stun casts. If the enemies are still all alive after the enemies are stunned 3 times, the WHM should start throwing out the Asylum bubble or their Temperance angel wings afterwards. Just one at a time though for those 2 cooldowns. In most cases, the DPS in the groups I was in kills most of the little guys after the stun spam, so I don't usually need those 2 major cooldowns with 3 enemies left. Although the Afflatus spells, Assize and Tetragrammaton should definitely be used no matter what.

For the AST case, you should 100% expect to see card buffs thrown your direction to mitigate your damage taken. The Bole tree for 10% reduction. The Spire lightning bolt for a barrier. The Ewer water jug for a heal over time HoT. And the Arrow for increasing heals you receive from ... mostly their Aspected Benefic HoT. They also have a short cooldown that looks like an orange-ish Celestial Intersection in addition to the Spire. All of this together tends to keep the tanks up decently well at the start and I have rarely needed to use Synastry or Neutral Sect on the tanks yet leveling from 90 - 100. Although I do use the Earthly Star regularly since that one does mass AoE damage and heals. I will have to get used to Macrocosmos a bit more since that one also does AoE damage and heals. As another said, Essential Dignity works like Tetragrammaton as an oGCD heal except it gets higher potency when the target is around 30% HP.

From your end, you should only be stacking 2 at most if it's your Holy Shelltron minor cooldown as one. Rampart and Sentinel tend to be the major cooldowns used one at a time throughout the pull. Reprisal and Arm's Length are some minor cooldowns that can be used later after using one of those major cooldowns. Arm's Length inflicts a Slow to trash enemies who hit you and this can reduce auto attack damage more than you think.

I wouldn't wait exactly until they run out, especially with Arm's Length which needs time to apply. You might end up eating an entire set of autos with no mitigation, creating a rather spiky damage curve and I've seen bad healers struggle to play catch-up.

A few more things, don't sit on Hallowed Ground in trash pulls. It's 10 seconds of complete invulnerability and you can easily get two uses out of a dungeon.
If you get a WHM as your healer, watch whether or not they're casting Holy and when they do it. It's another ~7 seconds of no incoming damage and using your mitigation during it just wastes a majority of it's uptime.

Probably because brain donors been tossing around the notion that single pulls is "lethargic gameplay" and thus against ToS to the point where they will run off to pull more packs; so the tank either tanks everything which they are not enjoying doing..or stops playing tank.

In certain rare situations i use hallowed ground if i see that is only option to keep me alive.

Do you always run with the same people?

I ask because generally if a pull takes too long or a poor healer heals you then your going to be in a hurt unit. As a paladin do not undersell/be affraid of using Clemency now and then to top yourself off (only under instant cast) generally I open up with aoe combo and Rampart - sneaking in Sheltron. Once Sheltron drops off feel free to toss in reprisal. Also make sure your dodging AOEs as those will peel you fast and use your stuns.

With this level and ilvl, if you're properly spreading mitigation and using your confiteor combo and still dying then it's the healer's fault
Do use Arm Length outside of knockbacks tho that helps too

using 2 mits is okay, especially pairing sheltron with something else

in dungeons I do Sheltron on CD + Guardian + late Reprisal on first pack
and Sheltron on CD + Arms Length + Rampart + late Reprisal + late Bulwark on 2nd pack

Can even add Divine Veil on top of that

If your healer can't handle THAT at i696 then they have an issue

You can get a better ring now with Normal Raids so itll help boost your ilvl aa lot and get rid of that 660 ring

wow I am surprised someone knows forcing people to do something they do not want is against ToS.


but on all matter I just think people need to just learn how to be chill as a healer main if the tank small pulls I will not go further to force them I will do my healer job while looking around for potential Gpose location

This sums it up. As someone explained it to me once, the goal isn't to mitigate as much as possible all at once, it's to spread the damage out evenly over time so that it is predictable for the healer. Using too many at once will cause issues after they start to expire. It is less likely that OP got all the bad healers and more likely that OP needs to make some adjustments. Also, OP should be comfortable going below 50% damage without worrying too much.

leveling dungeons *usually* hit harder than cap dungeons, so wall to wall pulls will be rougher. some ppl arent rdy for that. (various dungeons are the exception to this)
you need updated gear, or above, usually (sometimes not)
your healer needs updated gear usually (sometimes not)
those 3 factors alone make a MASSIVE difference in difficulty.

next up, the most forgotten 4th step... the DPS need to actually kill the mobs before youre out of cooldowns...
sometimes they dont have updated gear, and or arent doing their rotations right, and the healer and tank start blaming eachother.

suggestions;
(1) stick to trust NPCs until max level, where its usually easier to stay alive ignore this, i see you mean Lv100
(2) 2 different styles of mitigation rotation;
1st pull use your 40%(30%) mit
after it wears off;
then rely on weaker ones like reprisal, then also including your short 25s mitigation with/after(sheltron, TBN, etc)
2nd pull use arms length+rampart (this will be roughly 40%)
then rely on weaker ones like reprisal, then also including your short 25s mitigation with/after(sheltron, TBN, etc)

alternative option;
1st pull use your jobs short CD+ rampart
2nd pull use your jobs short CD+ arms length
after the initial CDs wear off, weave in other weaker CDs like low blow and reprisal (low blow is equal to 1 out of X, where X is the number of enemies pulled. so if you pull 6 mobs, and you stun one for 5 seconds, then thats roughly a 16.6% mitigation)
saving the 40% for bad situations.

you can also save your invuln, or you can designate it for the start of a pull as well (i use a macro to tell my healer the next pack of mobs im going to use it, so they know not to bother healing until it wears off)

*edit: seeing more of the thread, i have a better idea what your situation is. make sure to use sprint a second before u aggro the 1st pack. so u dont get hit on the way to the 2nd pack. focus on the CDs more than your dps. thats not to say u can focus a tad on clean up after ur in position have have your 1st CD up. also dodge AoEs to lower dmg, some tanks get lost in the UI and forget in large pulls. you started with weak mitigation, when its best to start with strong mitigation. the time it should take to finish a trash pack, the mobs should be almost dead, or a few are dead, by the time your 2nd set of CDs wear off. (strong mit, then weak paired)

Dont use clemency on trash packs if possible, it can make the healer choose to prioritize DPS over healing u, thinking ur going to heal yourself. but if u do, save it for the tail end of a fight that might be dragging on a bit too long, and all you have left is low blow for mitigation.

Again, if you are dying or having to use Clemency while using your mitigation like I or Claire Pendragon described: you have a bad healer and its not your fault at all

Also no you cannot get banned for not doing savage perfectly

u wont need that gear, 700 is more than enough, and 710 will make it real easy. 720 is beyond overkill.

no one should go into savage thinking they are getting the clear. its all about dying 200 times, and then finally getting a clear. but if u were on my server id just bring ya to my groups, so u can see its honestly easier than u think (i find it easier than EXs)

This feels suspicious to me. Staying alive during a double-pull is a legitimate test of skill and teamwork for both the tank and the healer, so that's easy to believe. But the part about boss fights...I'm respectfully scratching my head. Do you have trouble staying alive as other roles as well? Because of all the roles, tank has the easiest job surviving in a normal mode boss fight due to their innate durability.

That being the case, I'd like to hear more about what's happening when you're dying in dungeon boss fights as a tank.

Though even without additional information, you're not going to get banned for being bad at the game. That's nothing you need to worry about.

w/o input from OP, i can only speculate. Maybe she means that she dies in any content, be it from trash or bosses. This includes trials, or bosses, but nott EVERY boss. (including some dungeon bosses like the one from deadwalk, as a tank myself, on terrible internet, i usually die near the end, when the boss checks to see if u have a cat head/vuln up, and insta kills u regardless of mitigation/hp. (happens when the boss is roughly at 5%-10% hp left)

Nothing you've described about your performance here strikes me as "bad". Everyone gets hit by mechanics sometimes, especially when you're still learning the fights. You're definitely not a super high-end tank who's playing optimally, but the overwhelming majority of players aren't either. So I would enthusiastically encourage you to relax about your skill level; you're doing fine!

From what you've said here, it sounds like the primary cause of your deaths is that you aren't getting enough healing. So if anyone in your groups is lacking in skill, its your healers. Even if you don't use ANY mitigation on a normal boss fight, your healer should still be able to keep you up without much difficulty; that's the entire reason why healers spend 90% of their time casting Stone, because the healing part of the job is so trivial.

To be fair, maybe the rest of your team is getting hit by mechanics and needs extra healing, which makes healing more complex and urgent. Or maybe the healers are still learning their job or the fights. Regardless, it's fine to make mistakes, it's fine to fail, and it's even fine to just be unskilled at the game. Plenty of people are unskilled at FF14, and they deserve to have a good time too. The only reason I bring up the skill level of your healers is to reassure you that your skill level is not the root cause of the issue here. So please, be at peace.

So since the overall issue is that you aren't getting the healing you need, my recommendation to you is to just keep the Clemency button within reach. If your healers aren't topping off your life every time you get hit in a boss encounter, take some time out of your 1-2-3 comboing to do it yourself. Not only will this help keep you alive, but it will indicate to any healer who's paying attention that you're not feeling safe, which may encourage them to step up their healing efforts instead of trying to squeeze out an extra cast of Stone; I know that if I saw my tank use Clemency, my protective instincts would kick into overdrive and they would be topped off ASAP for the rest of the run.


Also, if your healer is using the Rescue ability to drag you into more enemies than you want to fight, understand that that is not normal behavior. All you should have to do is ask them not to do that. And then if they do it again, that's considered harassment, and you can report them. Remember: you never have to bite off more than you can chew, so communicate with your party and let them know what you are and aren't comfortable with. That way you can learn and improve at a pace that works for you.

It still boggles me that people are of that mind but some folks are just not wanting to take the dungeon at pace it seems.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but tanks and healers are a lot more reliant on having the best possible gear for their current content due to the roles they play. I would really give your gear and materia a second look if you're getting melted right away. People have already mentioned understanding your mits but I can't stress the gear aspect enough. On a side note some dungeons just really hit harder then others. I find the 65, 75, 85 etc hit really hard. Malikahs well is a 78 and has some really rough pulls if you go wall to wall. My point is just understanding content as well and how hard you're going to be getting hit on certain pulls. The 99 dungeon is also a prime example of the first wall to wall pull being pretty rough unless you have a good healer and use all of your mits properly.
