I'm writing this thread because of reminiscence/nostalgia of 4.x Samurai deleted action(s) such as Ageha. I miss it and I want it back if possible(and I'm not too sure why it was removed in the first place back in 5.x/Shadowbringer, could it be button bloating?). Anyways it had a cool looking animation and the kenki generation of +10 and +250 potency was always super useful, Obviously now samurai kenki gauge management has becomes less strict meaning, you will always have enough kenki in no matter what situation you are in but yeah. Bring back Ageha please? Haha

Situational "can use when target is < 20% hp for 10 kenki" when you already get excessive kenki due to lack of a second kenki spender means this is extremely unlikely to make the cut. Also let's see how long 20% hp lasts in savage. Is it like 2-3 minutes? You get 2-3 uses of this skill over an 8-11 minute fight to get a grand total of 20-30 kenki, translating to 1 shinten, and about 500 potency in total. To me that sounds like a waste of a button, but if that seems like a valid use case for you, then you might want to support an even more valid use case that Kaiten provided (which I see you have not, in the thread that someone painstakingly went to compile every Kaiten-supporting thread in).Quote:

Yes it's a great boost in damage yes, it feels good to hit the button but Ageha can also be re-worked so that it doesn't require the target to be below 20% HP to use it. But honestly, Kaiten advantage heavily on gear. People who have better ilvl gear or sub-stats benefit from kaiten the most, not saying Kaiten doesn't help everyone but some people get more than others. Therefore I can understand why JP players want it back as well as EN especially those who likes to min-max everything and aiming for orange/gold or pink parse. To me, I don't really miss it. Not that I didn't always use it in the past. Whether SE adds it back or not, it's all the same to me. But I am rooting for every samurai players that are chasing Kaiten back. I only voiced my honest opinions in that post that you mentioned and in this post. Whether you agree with me or not, is a different story. Only then will samurai stop being an anime fantasy job and reflect the fantasy of actual samurai values.
It's fine to like kaiten for its animation, but not everyone is in the same boat and it's a really good thing that it was removed.
Ageha as a kenki dump on a 60 second cooldown would be much cooler. Varying potency with amount of kenki pooled is also a great idea. The one problem this job has currently is too much kenki and too much shinten spam. -

Currently all Kenki skills have a 10 potency/kenki ratio (except Senei), and making this reworked skill's cost and recast timer the same as Shinten would just make this the new Shinten. So basically rebalancing for that would make this a decent, alternate Kenki spender skill. And yeah change the animation as well because we don't need a "slightly longer Shinten" animation lolQuote:

I want it to be cool and feel cool. Not to "look cool". I want it to actually be cool. Kaiten was cringe, ikishoten is cringe. Flourish animations are for western swordplay. Leave that stuff on red mage and paladin. It simply doesn't belong in the samurai job fantasy. -

"Western schools of combat are known for those behaviours" yeah, no, they're not. You call me ignorant, but you have no idea how western swordplay works. The "zen-like state of mind" makes you sound like someone that treats the katana as some kind of holy blade that shouldn't be tarnished, compared to those western blades that can be swung willy-nilly with no drawbacks. No, it's a sword, it cuts when you swing it against something, it's no more special than any other sword.
And yes, I do expect a japanese company to have a better idea of how a Samurai operates because they have better access to the historic literature and are part of the culture that was formed out of that history, growing up in a culture makes it a hell of a lot easier to understand the nuances within that culture. They "mess up the katana models" because they care about the rule of cool in their fantasy game. Realism be damned, they want something that's very much not like what you think a Samurai should be, and is instead what a video game Kugane-Samurai would be. Lord knows I can point out how stupid some of their rapier and arming sword designs are, but I don't, because the result still looks cool.
How the hell did you think that I thought "all japanese people are like samurai" from what I said? All I implied is that being part of a culture makes you, *gasp*, more in tune with that culture. Square may take some inspiration from western influences, but their culture is still very much japanese. Or do you think someone who would be born and raised in japan would have no idea what a Samurai would be? -

Iaijutsu literally is the art of quick drawing your sword. In real life if you practice Iaido (居合道) or Kenjutsu（剣術） that involves Iaijutsu（居合術）, then you will sheathe your sword in order to perform the technique.
It's not necessarily about it being a "really strong technique" or "looking cool" this is an entire style of how swords are used.
Then to go into thrusts, many Kata in Kenjutsu and Iaido use thrusts, Hissatsu means certain kill. In the days where swords were used by armies a lot, thrusts were the common method of attack to kill an enemy because a slash will typically not pierce armor. That being said the sword was not used as often as many more armies favored spears and bows. Spears were better for penetrating armor and had a better range than a sword.
So in terms of translations here to make it even easier to understand :
Iaijutsu - 居合（iai) means the art of drawing one's sword, cutting down one's opponent and sheathing the sword afterwards.
（術） means art or technique. Literally the translation is the art or technique of cutting an opponent down and then sheathing your blade. Jutsu can also mean magic in a different context.
Kenjutsu - 剣 (Ken) means sword,
術 (Jutsu) again means technique or art. Jutsu can also mean magic in a different context.

Noun
killer technique; surefire assassination method
special or lethal move
Those "flourishes" are actually standard parts of Iaido kata today. Iaido is the modern form of Iaijutsu. You should look up Iaido demonstrations and you'll see the "flourishes" as you call them are often just creative ways to clean blood off your sword or a way to sheathe your sword.
So yeah I guess you could say it doesn't make sense but it just seems like you don't really know much about Japanese culture. The current samurai is half based on the "fantastical samurai" and the post Edo period style Samurai. But the attacks are very grounded in real life techniques for the most part. -

Interesting, I know Iaijutsu was actually used, but from what I understand of it, it wasn't a battlefield maneuver, but more like a self-defence thing, possibly execution, or pre-emptive attacking, which was what I was trying to convey (rather poorly honestly). Either way I don't have an issue with it being in-game, but moreso was just pointing out you wouldn't realistically want to resheathe a weapon mid-combat. I'm willing to eat my words on that however.
And yeah, that was the point I was making overall; the attacks are a mix of fantasy and some grounding in reality. Silly things like the Kaiten spin are pure fantasy, which is fun. That said, I never really claimed to be particularly knowledgeable on japanese culture either, most of my knowledge I admit is very cursory and simple. -

It depends more on the style of Kenjutsu on how many drawing techniques you use with the modern Iaido being basically all about drawing techniques.
As for Kaitens sword spin, there are actually sheathing techniques that look very similar. There's all sorts of ways to flip your sword around because you strike with the blade toward the opponent but sheathe with the blade side towards the sky to keep the blade from dulling. That's why for example in game the sheathe has the blade pointing towards the sky. When walking around with your sword sheathed if the blade were near the bottom of the saya(sheathe) it would dull very quickly, and katana had to always be sharpened and ready.
I would assume since Kaiten was only used before Iaijutsu (yes ogi namakiri is also a type of iaijutsu) it's kind of meant to be like a spin before sheathing the blade to draw it for the next strike. -

I'll eat my words on Iaijutsu at least, but I think my overall point still remains that it's all well and good for Square to have over-the-top animations if they so wish. Removing abilities like Kaiten, which was an important part of Samurais gameplay design, because of a subjective opinion on it "looking cringe" is only destructive to job design. It combined the two disparate mechanics of Iaijutsu and Kenki together so that you had to manage one to emphasise the other. It'd be like removing Suiton from Ninja and having Trick Attack be a standard cooldown, suddenly the interplay between two different mechanics is lost and the job feels worse as a result. -

It makes absolutely zero sense from the angle of realistic function to do anything like that prior to actually drawing the sword, let alone before sheathing it. By the time you have drawn it too, the attack is engaged and there is no time for weeb flair animations. The angle of the cut is determined in an instant when the tip of the sword leaves the koiguchi of the saya. It is both dangerous and incorrect to ever orient the saya any way other than with the blade edge facing upward while it is at the hip.Quote:

In FFXIV the rotation is never ending really. So they aren't really comparable to the single strike nature of Samurai even within the job.
Here is a pretty neat demonstration from a very long time ago. You can notice within this demonstration there are sometimes moments where the sword (while much less exaggerated) is sheathed in a similar way to the motion of the kaiten animation if it happens before iaijutsu. That being said the very end of kaiten (which I'll be honest I never really saw) with the holding up the sword is a little weird.

Look, I put my first idea up about Kaeshi: Higanbana being a double DoT, some people including you trying to shoot it down, Although the idea was getting shot down I still agreed with majority of the players including you because you were spitting facts (even though I knew the facts that's been mentioned). The idea of making ageha a 30 second cooldown that dumps all kenki and has varying potency based on amount of kenki is a great one, but it doesn't have to be ageha. I do think the animation is cool, but it might not flow very well in combat and seems weird against raid bosses or targets you cant get very close to because of the kick component.
We'll see what happens for dawntrail, but this job is very close to perfection as is. -

@SoloD007 : I would recommend just ignoring side comments like that in the future . If someone doesn’t have anything important to add to the conversation I would say it’s worth ignoring them.

I give credit where credit is due and I bring down the hammer on toxic people, one of my life philosophy is an eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth. I don't go around bullying other people or passively-aggressively forcing other people into doing what I want or to agree with my opinion but I won't stand still or keep silent on people mocking me or bullying me (I friendly suggest this to everyone) because if you haven't done anything wrong nor offend other people, offenders have no right to be-little/mock/bully you just because they think themselves as god or some kind of omnipotent creature. It's just not right, I stand up for people who just want to help and teach naughty/toxic people how to be a decent human being (because obviously they don't know this concept). The forum foundational purpose and intention is a platform for people to freely voice their opinions/ideas or just asking for help etc etc. Everyone has the right to agree or disagree with each other because everyone is different and have different views on stuff. People that come into the forum to oppress others are no different to a real life terrorist or a dictator (example: Adolf Hitler), no one likes terrorist nor a dictator but we shouldn't be afraid nor cower before them. On a side note, I am very fascinated by the Japanese culture, especially their martial arts/kendo practices because I come from a Chinese lineage/background so a lot of traditional/old kendo style(s) were originated from ancient Chinese swordplay called "Jian Fa/剑法" which essentially means fencing/swordplay or martial arts called "Gong Fa/ 攻伐/Gong Fu/Kung Fu" which essentially means "To attack or to raid/effort". Hence why I decided to invest time, money and effort into FFXIV because of Samurai kendo/Iaijutsu and the game developers actually listens to its player base and it's community (to a certain extent because at the end of the day, Square-Enix is still a global conglomerate company and their main priority is cost/profit).
