Because 1x8 would be a lot more intrusive in the moment...
because of low resolution 4:3 resolution players
Is there a way to turn off in duty portrait displays because I find them very distracting.
I actually think it's a neat feature, just a bit disappointed that it's so small actually. You make big, colorful portraits but you only see it for a second and it's so tiny.
There could be some sort of a "pause" with the big thing on screen for a sec at the start of the duty, idk. With, of course, the possibility to turn it off if people don't like it.
It seems like it would make more sense to display the portraits while you're loading. Either before you enter, as each person confirms participation, or over the black screen as you load in. But it's too distracting having them show up where they do, while you're already travelling through the dungeon.
I saw it once as I loaded into the new trial, said "Well, that's gonna be annoying" and turned it off as soon as I exited the duty. Same with the commendation window. The list is fine for me. I don't need pictures. I think it meshes extremely well with CC, but not so much for PvE content. In its current iteration at least.
Lmao sure, that's a solution.
I don't mind it not showing up for long (because you can pop it up again anyway at the start of the duty) I just think it's a shame it's so small.
That's my opinion, I can understand why people don't like it. I enjoy the feature, that's just me.
You can.
When the portraits are displayed you need to go where your notification windows is, open up and you’ll see all the portraits without any time restriction.
Then, you can right click on the upper part of the window poped (near the Close bottun) and set the size you like and the position.
It will remain saved for the future.
Open the Duty Menu
They added a button to check out portraits on the bottom of that window.
I would just be happy if they'd fix the janky portrait system to stop breaking on the most minimal of changes to your gear set. Stuff that may not even be a legit change, but it still demands you press Triangle (on console) to update your gear set.
Forcing you to go back into portraits, click edit, and update that.
Why did they think it was a good idea to do it like this? Why can't I just make a nice portrait and not be forced to reflect whatever gear or glam I'm currently wearing, but that somehow seems mandatory.
Instant portrait reverted to default. Current appearance and/or gear does not match that shown in portrait.
How do I get this to stop appearing at the start of every single duty?
I don't understand the portrait system; I don't care about it, and I'm tired of being nagged about it. I just want to do my roulettes.
I haven't even changed any gear/appearance since 6.3 hit, but it's still showing that error.
This all just feels like a really unnecessary annoying change. Not well thought out.
This might help.
In short, even if accessories are obfuscated by other pieces of gear, their glamour (or lack thereof) are still taken into account by the portrait.
If different gearsets apply different glamours to those accessories, it'll break your portraits in gearsets where your glamour plates have empty slots.
I don't use any glamour plates. I've always just applied glamours directly from the dresser. I don't glam much besides weapons.
For sure it would, but the load screen is loading the data needed for the portraits. I think a compromise here would be adding a new element to the UI that allows players to click on it to display the character portraits. The sticker can vanish on its own after a certain period of time, or players can elect to not have it show up at all by disabling it in their UI settings. This way they can also give the players the option how they would like the grid displayed, whether it be 1x8, or 2x4, vertical or horizontal, size option, and where exactly on the screen the portraits appear.
I really do like this feature though. It think it's really neat, and I love being able to see close ups of my party members. It just needs some fine tuning for those who want to see them.
They are killing this fun system it seems every patch. Been gone a year and things worked fine but now the the dungeon ones are hideous.
Why are they small af and why are they shown AS you're running? Just do it before we all load or in the barrier.
That and the portrait system itself is extremely buggy and broken and from what I've read it's been like this for months.
It's actually kinda sad to see the state of the games quality it's going down so badly like this, that even simple things
like portraits can't be done correctly lmao. Wow.
The issue with the portrait system is, at least in my opinion, that they got it right the first time around and they only needed to add on to or refine what was there. Instead, they just...turned the entire system on its head and seemingly started over. Either they don't know what they want, or they have no idea what they are doing with it. I'm honestly not sure what the issue is. Either way yeah, I also feel that the general quality of some things has gone downhill since EW started. The game seems to be lacking the polish it once had. It has been going on for a while though I think, but it has just been way more prominent recently. It's not all terrible or else I wouldn't be here, but the mistakes I've seen them make these past however many months have been almost physically painful to witness.
It's actually not fun. It's sad to see people not listen or follow simple instructions. I've laid it out repeatedly and SE gave clear instructions. Folks just wanna be mad for the sake of it.
I'm honestly content with it and I'm helping my friends get theirs sorted out.
In-duty portraits works fine, BUT...
I really, REALLY don't like having to update each portrait when I just change the headgear visibility, it just sucks. I don't want to open 2 windows and click 3 buttons each time I change a tiny part of my gearset/glamour. It's an extremely tedious process. I don't expect a player that is currently going through the MSQ to do this every time that they loot new gear (which is very often). You know that something is wrong when you see 99% of the people you play duties (or even CC) with have default portraits.
There is no instructions to start with. It's not displayed anywhere that you need to re-save your portraits each time you change something on your gearsets, other than an error message saying that your current gearset and portrait do not match when you start a duty.
If they don't want to auto-save portraits when the gearset changes, they could at least fall back to the adventurer plate's portrait.
I really like in-duty portraits, but because of how the actual portraits system works, it's useless. I was really hoping they would fix the underlying system before trying to display it in more places.
This thread is covering in-duty portrait display, which was not implemented until this patch. There are plenty of other threads already where players have congregated to gripe about the inefficacy of the portrait system.
The 'in-duty' portrait system is a pretty cool feature. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it at all, and we were informed prior to release that you can just turn it off if you don't like it, or don't want anything to do with it. You can simply use that option and be done with it. This thread should really focus on how to make it better for those of us who do enjoy it.
That's not to say that the in-duty portrait system isn't currently cumbersome, and actually discourages making changes to your character's appearance. However, because this is so new, the feedback whether through direct representation, or a message in a bottle is highly encouraged to get this feature working correctly. Banding together like a mob with torches and pitchforks at every opportunity to express dissatisfaction with the system, the expansion, and the game overall isn't going to help or accomplish anything for anyone, including yourself.
I like the idea. I'd rather have my adventurer plate portrait be displayed though.
Why is maching gear and job on a portrait even a thing? Who cares if I'm wearing Summoner gear on a portrait while doing a dungeon as a Reaper? Or if I'm using a job-specific pose, while not being on that job?
Certainly not because of immersion, considering I can slap a Namazu head on my character just fine.
This is such an unnecessary, annoying restriction to have.
Just let us design tons of portraits and attach them to gear sets. No restrictions >.<.
It could probably use a help entry in-game, but for me, I've yet to encounter a problem since properly saving my gearset in the first place. In the 6.2 notes, I've pointed out the warnings they offer about previously saves portraits.
Hitting that "update gearset" button is also important. (I think this is what a lot of people are missing when they change things out.) I've just done that out of habit since I started playing. I don't mess with visor, but I'll try it out and see what happens. Short of changing race, I've been going through most of the update scenarios and have yet to encounter a portrait that resets.
If they're pulling data from the gearset, they might as well pull it from the player's current equipment.
In addition to the annoyance of the portrait failing, the error message itself feels intrusive and distracting. I haven't tried running the final Endwalker dungeon since portraits were enabled, but I suspect the error message would cut into the narrative opening to it.
What I wish I could do:
- Create and save one or more portraits, like I did for my adventurer plate
- Have those portraits permanently stay the way I made them, disregarding any gear or job changes whatsoever
- Decide which one will display when I enter a duty
I'm just a consumer expressing what I wish the portrait system would let me do. I'm not going into details about how this could be achieved, or if it is clunky or not.
It's possible for adventurer plates, so in theory it should also be possible for portraits.
Guy, I have left this game for a year, came back, did not did not change anything at all and it is giving me an error when I switch out, every single time.
I deleted sets, edited slightly, unlink glam, reequipped and nada. So you can quit the "it works for me" nonsense please. The system is broke, this is nothing to do with people not reading.
It has everything to do with that because I've done what you described and it works. There's something you're overlooking. I'll quit the "it works for me" when you quit the "it's totally broke" nonsense. If something's actually broken, we're not going to figure out what it actually is by yelling and screaming and having fits over the slightest little thing. Take a breath and work through the steps.
It's just Deveryn doing Deveryn things. Yeah, there's definitely some issues with this, and you're not the only one. There's even a bug report about sets failing to register properly.

I'm guessing it's not broken for everyone, but it definitely has some issues that need sorted out.
It's apples and oranges with 1 piece of data vs. 20+ others. Whatever they have going on for plates, they don't want that happening with portraits. They streamlined portraits to send as little data as possible for display in duties. It's a quick set of gpose settings rather than whatever static model gets set up in the plate.
