Overview:
Instant Portraits can only be used in duties if the equipped gear matches the one registered to the portraits.
There are two mechanics in place to detect whether those gears are mismatched:
- The portrait menu detects whether a portrait's gear is different from its registered gearset
- In turn, the gearset menu detects whether the registered gearset differs from the equipped gear.
(To my knowledge, there is no way to directly compare the equipped gear with a portrait's gear. Comparison with the gearset is a required intermediary step.)
There are some situations where the gearset menu will fail to detect a difference between the gearset and the equipped gear, making the current Instant Portrait unusable in duties. No menus will report that the gear is mismatched, and the options to update the portrait or gearset will not be readily available; the equipped gear is indeed different, but this difference may be invisible to a human eye, thus the player may become wrongly confident in the belief that their equipped gear is the same as the Instant Portrait.
Noteworthy requirements are:
- You have switched gearset while in a sanctuary.
- The gearset is linked to a glamour plate.
- The glamour plate contains unglamoured slots.
- The pieces of gear that were not glamoured by the plate have been previously glamoured via other means (e.g, by switching to a different gearset).

A) Creating a corruptible geaset
- Create a glamour plate where some items are not glamoured.
- Link the plate to a gearset, and apply the glamour to its gear.
- Make sure the items that are not glamoured on the plate are also unglamoured while equipped. Use glamour dispellers if needed.
- Save the gearset, and re-save the associated portrait.
- Join a duty to ensure there is no gear mismatch. The newly created portrait should be displayed when the duty starts.
B) Corrupting the gearset
- Apply a glamour to the previously unglamoured items.
- While in a sanctuary, unequip and re-equip the gearset.
-> The glamour plate is applied to the gear, but items that should be unglamoured will remain glamoured.
-> The gearset menu does not indicate that glamours could not be restored.
-> The character menu does not offer the possibility to update the gear set. (button is greyed out).
-> The portrait menu does not indicate that the gearset and its portrait use mismatched gear.- (Optional) In an attempt to forcefully update the portrait, make some change to it (e.g: its background) and save it.
- Join a duty.
-> A default portrait will displayed at the start of the duty.
Possible workarounds:
- Fill all slots on your glamour plates. This will enforce all glamours to match with those registered in the gearset
- Unlink the gearset from its glamour plate. This will enable the gearset menu to detect mismatched glamours, even in sanctuaries.
- (One-time fix) Make a big change to the equipped gear (e.g: unequip and re-equip a piece of gear). This will enable you to update the gearset.
