6.0 summoner ideas

I’m a summoner main and recently I went back and did some of the Alexander raids. He’s always been a personal favorite summon of mine and I feel like it’s a shame we haven’t gotten to utilize him in some way so I’ve got a proposal and I’m curious to know what others think.

Get rid of dreadwyrm trance or combine it with summoning bahamut(much like phoenix) and let that be the big dps part of the rotation. Then summon Phoenix which adds Everlasting Flight as a healing buff. After that, summon Alexander to grant the party haste or cast slow on nearby enemies since Alex is associated with time in ffxiv.

I think this would be a great way to incorporate a fan favorite summon into the summoners toolbag of tricks. We’d have something that looks epic and adds raid utility without being ridiculously overpowered.

It would be ideal if we could have a way to cycle through them at will to buff the party or deal more damage depending on the circumstances. Perhaps have the Egis tied to which Demi summon is available.

Ifrit=bahamut for big dps.
Titan=Alexander for buffs
Garuda=Phoenix because they’re both basically birds lol.

Just an idea. Whatcha think?

I really like the idea of combining DT with Bahachan. And new summons are always nice. That being said, I really don't like SMN in XIV. :( Got it to 80 and I just can't bring myself to play it anymore.

Trance shouldnt be removed or be combined with bahamut. What they should do is put current trance effect , Basicly the transformation mech , to the summons. Trance instead should be kept its own phase , ideally still allowing you to end it whenever you like and reseting tridi. Most importantly though Trance NEEDS the aetherflow cycle , It transforms trance from a rigid cooldown to a fluid one something that is an absolute necessity in order for summoners to combat fight downtime.

The arguement ive seen against aetherflow is that people dont want to w8 60 seconds, But you werent w8ing that much, because by the time you needed the second aetherflow 20 seconds pass, so you dont have to w8 full duration and add to that some jobs need longer countdowns up to like 20-30 seconds, means you only need to w8 for 10-20 seconds. And even if people disagree with that all they had to do was to put charges on aetherflow, that would have doubled down on the fluid part.

The same way trance needs aetherflow, the demis need trance, in order for them to not be rigid. It is why pheonix , even though its more fun, it can be a massive dps loss that is mostly out of your control. Bahamut on the other hand isnt.

I'm totally in favor of combining DWT/FBT with Bahamut, I think Deathflare should be combined with Enkindle phoenix/bahamut too, as these can only be executed during their respective phases.
A QoL I hope to see is adding Further Ruin charges to one of the job gauges. While they at it, I wouldn't mind an aoe FR expender.

As a more controversial opinion, I think SMN should be reworked to be more like BRD, jumping from one phase to the next seamessly, in each phase having your actions work slightly different, which is kinda how it works right now, except the way it works now is kinda sloppy and you have fillers between phases.

I'd like the Bahamut/DWT merging just as long as they fix the ghosting from moving around with a Demi summon.

My current hopes are that the next new DPS job they release turns out to be a DoT-oriented caster, so that they can alleviate SMN of its split focus on DoTs and instead concentrate on its core summoning.

So you would have your Egis or Carbuncles as constant sources of damage in place of DoTs, and then your main rotation would be about empowering/commanding your active pet and using Aetherflow to briefly summon other Primal-Egis as single attacks (similarly to Yuna in Dissidia), culminating in the Demi-Primals as major cooldowns.
Tri-Disaster could then be reworked into something like an attack that briefly summons multiple Egis at once to perform a coordinated assault (since it originally was an attack that dealt multi-elemental damage).

I'd also like to see some reworking to the Egis we have, too. Maybe another Egi devoted to single-target so you're swapping between Ifrit and it to attack, and a rework to Titan to include more personal survival tools like changing its AoE into a radial stun or a Landslide.

And yes, I agree DWT should be combined with Demi-Bahamut, just like FBT is with Demi-Phoenix. Could possibly even see a rework to DWT so that it changes attacks similarly to FBT does while it's active.

I currently don't like SMN despite it being my first DPS and one I've played with at least to some degree since 2.0. It feels like a very chaotic and disjointed rotation at the moment, and my biggest wish is for that to change.

Thematically, something I think would be nice to see is Fester, Painflare, and Aetherpact get changed along with getting a new oGCD action. Fester could change to Breach Breath, where the SMN summons a temporary aether form of Bismark, Painflare changing into Bloody Fuller with Ravana, Aetherpact into Alluring Embrace for Lakshmi, and a new action called Ame-no-Murakumo where Susano-o is briefly summoned to lay down a ground AoE in the shape of a line that does damage over time. I don't see these Primals ever getting egi or demi forms, so having them represented in actions would be a nice touch, I think.

I've never been able to get into SMN because there's a lot in their kit that seems incomplete or just kinda messy. The DoTs seem to only exist for Fester and the Egis are kinda meh now. I'd be okay with SE just outright removing the pets in general, they're really unresponsive and hasn't been exciting. I'd rather they work on having SMN with demi summons that feel powerful and big in scale.

Having SMN with demi summons to rotate around with possibly Bahamut being the hard hitter would be nice instead of 3 different parts of their kits not being connected.

That being said, I'd rather there be a true DoT mage with its kit revolving around it, SMN was never one for me personally.

What you're essentially saying is because it hasn't been handled the way you want it to be handled, we should just abandon it so that it either never gets better, or outright take it away so that everyone who enjoys it currently can't have it anymore.

As much as i want to disagree i get the sentiment.
Everyone can pick a job and "play" it, But to understand how the systems impact one another aka the reasoning behind them it needs a bit more than just get it to 80 and do dungeons. Add to that the fact people honestly dont care about said interactions and simply spit out what they themselves consider to be their ideal changes and you got this mess.

Im not going to overly judge people who want bahamut trance to be a thing. Im ashamed to say i wanted that at some point, but then i learned and i played and i even got an example where bahamut not being tied to trance is godsent. E6s where ifrit jumps so that both can come down. This happens during trance , now if it was pheonix then you would have to lose a summon during the end cause you would have to w8 for the jump to happen, or you would still use it and lose half of pheonix. But cause its bahamut and trance you can just trance and simply end it just before he jumps , missing only 1 measly gcd and then get the whole summon phase out with the greatest of ease instead of losing a whole summon.
For people who say they love the demis theyd want pheonix to be like bahamut and not the opposite, it is the spell transformation that they enjoy and it would be 10 times better to just move that to the summons like i proposed.

But it simply doesnt end there the constant bickering from the groups that only enjoy parts of summoners and not the whole package, the utter disregard of how their ideas would impact balancing in favour of spectacle, the hate it gets from other jobs not just the 2 casters but everyone else due to how much value it carries. The devs allow blm to have that much dps cause its hard , but when smn comes they say they dont want to balance with difficulty in mind even though smn is supposed to be overloaded , cause he summons gods and creates myriad of different effects. Not only that we got the people who arbitrarily choose how much of summoner is summoner or final fantasy and its just a recipe for disaster.

The forums are clogged , the job simply put hasnt got a place where it can introduce the ideas it needs in order to develop, and i mean every part of it not just the demi part. You can see people asking for a change but the job is popular, you can see outside of the forums people enjoying it the job and what it currently brings, some are new some are not new, old players usually compare summoner with itself since it changes twice per expansion, while in the forums people compare it with its past iterations with an unfair degree of arbitrary. On the other hand we know yoshi p doesnt play it , and the 5.0 changes where a massive downgrade exasperating the notion that maybe the devs dont know what to do , which is a bit understandable given the nature of each summon being a phase.
So we cant give info for development and the devs dont know what to do since its a hard task to take.

Summoner discussion in the forums is like you brought a friend for pizza, he goes ahead he says he loves pizza to death and then goes ahead and eats only the toppings, then says it sucked.

Next summon demi should be Shiva. It would really contrast well with the fire from Phoenix.

Sorry to bring BRD again but, but I rather have Tri-disaster just have a shorter cd (without the reset effect of DWT) so you can use it to reset your dots every time, like BRD does with Iron Jaws, instead of having to use miasma/bio every fourth reset.

I hope he can become a real caster, not a caster with long-range physical DPS mobility.

Give us a trait at level 90 that transforms the Egi’s into Demi versions automatically during combat, so we won’t have cities full of Primals. Make Titan actually viable by letting it offer a physical damage bonus to the party either passively or through it’s actions and let Ifrit offer magical bonuses so the Summoner can adjust to their party set-up, while Garuda is the AoE/Ranged Primal option. Egi-Assault can become Demi-Assault. This alone would make Summoner feel a lot more consistent with its later game Moveset and not like 3 different jobs smashed together like it currently feels like.

It's a shame that a 99 parsing Smn can make a troll parse run where they cast R3 only once and instead just use R2 and still get a 88 doing more DPS than any ranged played perfectly.

This job is straight up busted and it's clearly because the devs know no one would put up with it's janky pet system if it didn't offer the Mobility of a ranged with more Utility than a Rdm and rival the DPS of the Blm on top of all that.

Much the reason why I feel they will replace the dots and egis and do a less mobile phase.

If SMN is forced to remain as the DoT caster, sure.

But the premise of my post was not to have it be a DoT specialist at all, to displace that onto a new caster, and focus SMN on the pets and summoning over DoTs.
Trim it down from two DoTs to just one, or even none at all with the pets serving in place. You wouldn't need Tri-Disaster to reset the DoT timer if you didn't have multiple.

Taking a 99th Summoner on Ramuh, a single target nigh full uptime fight (So it doesn't benefit one ranged or caster over another), using the current 5.3 summoner who saw a nerf to Tri Disaster's upfront potency, the average expected DPS is 19,200.

99th is pretty close to mechanical perfection, so we can safely just pick any top log from Ramuh near that amount and make a direct conversion.

Rank 68 will serve.

Ruin 3 contributed approximately 3,000 DPS overall. A straight replacement with Ruin 2, were it possible, would reduce this Summoner by 600 DPS. However, since Ruin 4 and Ruin 2 cannot be separated, this means that we are losing Ruin 4s in buff windows, so the reduction is more significant in the general case, however in this one, the reduction is minimal as the only raid buff the Summoner personally benefits from is Chain Strategem. We'll compromise and say 750 DPS is what the summoner loses by not having Ruin 4s in raid windows they normally would have and replacing all Ruin 3s with 2s.

This 19,200 summoner is therefore reduced to 18,450. 18,450 is approximately the 90th percentile, so it's fairly close to 88th.

Prior to 5.3, the Summoner was more represented in speedkills than the Black Mage.

Prior to 5.2, the Summoner was more represented in progression than the Red Mage. Edengrace was not given a Progress metric, likely due to not having time to prepare the site for such once the content actually dropped (We had approximately 2 weeks for Edengate, where as we had same-day drop for Edengrace), however, even when Summoner was both mechanically jank-ier and about equal to the Red Mage in raw power, the Summoner was still preferred in progress. There is no reason to believe this has changed in 5.2 when the Summoner was objectively stronger than Red Mage due to the changes in 5.1.

So addressing each of the claims:

An '99th' troll summoner will fall to 90th - 18,450 raid DPS. A 99th Dancer, highest of the three ranged, for Ramuh is 18,150.

Summoner doesn't have true Ranged Mobility - They pay a tax for every step outside certain windows, but this usually falls in line with where casters are in general - They share about the same overall amount of mobility in terms of instant casts while having similar phases of movement restriction.

There are distinct scenarios where Red Mage's utility is better, but the general case is that Summoner is just as good. For being the "Prog" option, Red Mage is under represented in early prog compared to Summoner.

With the latest patch, Summoner will require extended, divided multi-target fights to pass Black Mage by significant margins again.

The Logs in question are from a Smn in late March. At the time the log had a 98% which dropped down to a 91% currently with a 18,940.5 RDPS and 19,009.9 ADPS. This, again, is with him deciding to only cast R3 once and instead spam R2, casting it 84 times in the Ramuh fight.

Smn doesn't have dashes but it is factually the most mobile of the casters, with basically nothing in it's kit forcing it to stand still. IDK of any other job that can still out put such high DPS with such lil drop off by completely ignoring what would normally be their most used skill.
To say they're punished for movement outside of certain windows is to tie this all back into the "their janky pet system is a headache for the devs" statement cause that's what it all comes down to.

They don't "work" like either of the other casters and if their DPS was in line with their freedom of movement (Brd/ Mch level) and their level of utility (only thing Rdm has over them is insta-casting Rez 2 more times before they're oom. Devotion is just a better, more flexible dps buff and their HoT isn't something they can control but does passively heal without stopping their rotation) then no one would put up with the headache of their pet system.

I personally believe "Dot Mage" is something that can work perfectly fine in this game if they could separate it from all the other janky non-sense that is Smn.
Perhaps in 6.0 they make a dot mage and rework Smn to not have Dots, focusing on a new FBT/ BHT like phase that requires hard casting and would replace the egis. IIRC this job has been said to be one of the next to see a massive rework so anything goes imo.

theyve only said w8 for future adjustements, not that theyll massively rework it. Also no its not factual that we re the most mobile, Rdm is the most mobile. Why? cause he has dual cast not only that he has a go in and a get out skill and at worst they can use some of their gauge to freely move. Smn has to plan his movement gcds and phases This is not janky pet system, the jankiness of the pet system comes from the ghosting and etc that both demis and egis suffer from , Smn has limited free of dps loss movement rdm has unlimited.
Rdm has embolden we got devotion. He is much better on physical teams than we are
rdm chain res makes them ideal for progs , the difference between 1 raise and 3 is massive for prog
And vercure is much better than our hot cause its on demand and it wont be wasted most of the time


Also the logic you are putting is pathetic. In order to balance the job youre asking that they break its legs because you think its busted , You people would be happy for smn to return to 5.0 state when a 50th percentile blm could outdps by 1000 a 75th smn

What on earth are you getting at?
The 98 was the parse it was at the time when it was up loaded, since then enough people have done better than them to push that parse down to 91 (which is only natural, it it the most popular job in the game and the more time passes the more 99s/100s will pop up). This person knows how to play Smn has parsed 99 with them and chose to ignore r3 to see what they could get. TBH once you're bis getting into the 90s is a matter of optimization and Crit RNG given the nature of this game being heavily Vertical Progression focused. So yeah, naturally someone playing with BiS in a non-optimal way would do worse than those who are BiS but playing the optimal way. That's not the point, the point is that someone can straight up ignore the normally most used attack in their rotation to effectively "play like a ranged physical" and have such lil drop off that they still do more DPS than a ranged physical played perfectly. Job is overtuned for clear reasons to me, if it followed the rules that dictate how much damage is allowed for other jobs it wouldn't be played.

Also, a Sam Dot seems like a poor comparison to literally ignoring your most used skill/ spell and replacing it with an insta cast that allows you to move freely and play like a whole different type of DPS.

Hmm? Blm def has good mobility for what they are but most anyone would agree you're in for a feels-bad if you want to blind prog as Blm. That's not the point though, they're asked to think about when and where they can cast in a fight. SE clearly uses freedom of movement as a metric to balance jobs, this is why Ranged DPS get "ranged tax", the jobs with the lease to worry about when it comes to fight mechanics who can have full up time do the lowest DPS compared to Melees and other jobs that can't run around like Sonic as they go pew pew ... but not Smn, lul.

lol get over yourself, you don't need to take a job to savage to have an opinion about game design buddy.
It's basic pattern recognition, anyone who follows this game would know how much the devs struggle to make Smn "work".
If you want to actually talk about game and job design then feel free to reply, if you just want to toss a tizzy over someone saying this job is overtuned in an effort to make up for their ongoing struggles to balance it's unique pet system and janky design (which they hate and even I, someone who didn't bother with the job until this expac, could remember times when it worked completely different) then I think it's best if you step back and detach yourself from what your feeling are on a job. Perfectly cool for anyone to like Smn as is ... and I don't think one should need savage parse on the job to comment on it as we can all understand basic job design :)

And all ruin2 run makes for a fun case study, but is a poor argument if you're trying to frame the job as overtuned (there are still people doing this?) The melee equivalent would be... missing all your positionals on purpose. The dragoon guide from the balance discord calculates this to be a 4% dps loss, which looking at a certain site would drop you from 99th to about 93th percentile, and still far in excess of what the ranged jobs bring to the table.

So, it's a thing for the melees too. The real implication of these anecdotes is that the poor ranged jobs are being taxed too much for the 'privilege' of having no movement considerations. You've sorta come to the right answer, but from the wrong direction.

That aside I'm amused to see some of you guys sticking up for summoner for a change. The relative positions of the 3 caster jobs haven't really changed to me, but maybe they finally nerfed the job enough to placate people this time? I did say though, that the real source of perceived caster imbalance is something more structural and holistic than pure dps concerns. Which means no amount of nerfs will be enough to satisfy some people, even if they can't quite put a finger on the source of their discontent. Considering that summoner is now a mere ~1% above red mage in a dummy situation, I'm sorry to see that I'm right.

We should get Demi Ramuh since we already have a blue and a red summon.

Make demi pet a dot like Esteem or Queen. That would fix some pet problem.

Thats actually incongruous.
Because the melee struggle isn't the positionals alone... Its staying in range while doing mechanics, and while getting positionals, and while (in the case of some of them with animation locks and cast time immobility like TCJ) occasionally also being unable to move, and while having to co-operate with the boss's placement. A SMN playing with all instacasts removes the ENTIRE STRUGGLE of its role as a caster. and still outperforms ranged and melee AND ON TOP OF THAT having rez and utilities is very obviously overpowered. Of course there are other intricacies like with summon timing and movement during your trances etc, but those are all comparable in other classes to just not as prevalently (queen, fray, other entities) And of course SAMs high damage is of question right now too, but again removing all aspects of melee constraints from SAM would have a higher impact than SMN ruin.

Regardless comparing such differences is never completely fair cause they are different problems. But melee dropping all positionals, and then dropping a good 8+gcds per fight to never risk uptime would likely be much more commonly in the range of a ranged physical.

You are right tho. The problem is more that ranged physical should be buffed than the top be pulled down. But overall to keep the general difficulty of the game the same you have to both pull down from those on the top and pull up on those at the bottom.

I mostly just want the animations changed to be primal-like. The official SMN art looks like the SMN is pulling Ifrit out to do a quick attack kind of like how they Trance Bahamut's head. I want all the spells to be kind of like this.
Instead of Ruin, when SMN soul is equipped it could turn into a Garuda animation. Ruin II a Ramuh spell. Maybe keep Bio/Miasma for the Rydia reference but have Bane changed to a Leviathan spell (spreading pestilence via water). Tri-Disaster is the perfect candidate for a Magus Sister appearance. So on and so forth.

Would also kind of like it if carbuncle was the only base pet out and behaved more demi-like, using a Glittering Ruby attack each time you attack and had an Assault skill that was like Afflatus Misery with strong DPS to 1 target and reasonable falloff to others. The other assault could be the HP shield but usable with demi-summons out and altered based on which one is out when you use it. Phoenix could add a small HoT for example. Then add one or two more demis (like Alexander and maybe Odin or something) so we almost always have a demi active except for maybe 30s downtime per "rotation" in a fight at level cap.
