5.0 Combat changes: What do you expect?

They mentioned the changes were too in-depth to be explained in a short interview, and since we're not getting a new healer because Yoshi wants to further tweak the existing ones I got curious: What are your thoughts?
Not only in regards to healing obviously, but what are you looking forward for them to add? Or remove? Or just overall change?

I personally would like if they redesigned Protect to be a cooldown instead of a "cast one and we're good" kind of spell.
It would also be nice to have a gap closer on the Paladin, or maybe a reworked Shield Lob, to make it bounce between hostile targets to aggro multiple mobs at once.

I don't expect anything, since I'm supposed to be getting an overhaul as WHM, and there's supposed healing balance changes coming, too. Who knows what's going to happen Make my Lilies useful and I'll be a content kitty.

I would like Shell, though. Much like Protect, it's kind of a staple of the FF series, and we do see it in Eureka.

As for the other classes, I barely touch them. I hit 70 for the job story and that's it.

Every monk main in the game

It's really hard for me to think of NEW things that could be added to the jobs. I would like them to change trick attack to apply even if the boss moves last second, and for TCJ to be able to be used while moving though.

Since they going to remove TP there should be a lot of changings it seems. Especially for jobs that were mixed until the 5.0 (Bard, Paladin, Dark Knight, Red Mage...). But I do not really know, what exactly to expect in this shape. Some new system based on MP?
They also will likely rework role and usual skills. For last one it's probably going to be similar with 4.0 when they removed a lot of skills for making their whole amount not too big for hotbars.

SCH feels like it's going to be pummeled (again). Hopefully they think of something better for WHM. AST has always been a perpetual see saw so who knows, unless they completely redesign it to stand on it's own and not half/half.

Perhaps they'll take some time to keep culling pre-pull optimization. (Aetherflow plz) They killed a lot of it in SB like the super long WAR one by making most abilities unusable outside of combat or extending durations.

And perhaps they'll do something about the overshield LB building if they feel like it.

I want combos to be consolidated into a single button the way it works now on PvP. I play on a console with a gamepad and its too annoying to have all those buttons on screen (I use macros to manage some but its still too much for the console UI to handle.)

There is zero reason to use combo abilities out of order anyways other than accidentally messing up your click. The game has been about weaving ogcds in between attacks and positioning for a long time anyways.

Another thing I would love to see is a bit of re-organization of abilities. Some basics should just be available earlier in the game for progression reasons. Warriors, for instance, should not have to wait until level 60+ to get their gap-closer.

:: It's near certain that TP is more or less getting deleted. It will -not- be replaced by putting MP costs on weaponskills or anything like that. Some jobs may gain new uses for MP but the notion of a resource that drains away just by doing your basic rotation has been nothing but problems for SE and can safely die.

:: It appears confirmed (or close to it) that tank stances are either going away or getting a significant rework.

:: I consider it likely that the dynamics of enmity are going to be changed drastically. It seems like nearly every patch has brought with it a set of changed aimed at making it easier and easier for tanks to hold hate, so I'd bet that SE will want to overhaul the whole situation.

:: It's possible, given the change to TP, that SE would also like to do away with situations where MP behaves in an equivalent manner. They may want to axe Lucid, for instance, and just make RDM/SMN more naturally MP neutral without the arbitrary maintenance button.

:: From YoshiP's comments re: Dancer gear, it's plausible that we'll see i.e. NIN changed to use Strength, SAM moved to Maiming gear, and NIN to Striking, or some similar reconfiguration aimed at the Maiming/Scouting situation.

:: Something is almost definitely going to be done with Role Actions. It's a prime target to cull button bloat, but at the same time they probably do want i.e. every tank to learn Rampart. They might just settle for "every tank learns Rampart" as part of their base skill list, and not have a special category for it, maybe making some other role actions only learned by one job in that role etc.

:: We still have no idea how damage type debuffs are going to work. They explicitly stated that Gunbreaker will do slashing damage, so it seems that these will continue in some form, but obviously in piercing's case the current situation is untenable.

So I can certainly understand the statement "there are lots of inter-related things", because there are. If SE does have a goal of cutting down on all "maintenance" types of skills where you just press a boring formality button every 2-3 minutes because it lets the party function (MP, TP and enmity-wise), it would be tricky to talk about that in bits and pieces.

I want Exalted Detriment back

PLD is the job I could give the most feedback. I'd like the job to have:

1- A close gap. All tanks have it. PLD can also have it, some sort of Shield Charge or something like that. Make it consume gauge.
2- Holy Spirit but AoE. Call it Holy Burst. Enhanced with Requiescat. This would give them more AoE tools like the other tanks.
3- Reduction of CD times: Compared to other tanks, I feel the cds of both Sentinel and specially Bulwark are too high.
4- Making stance dancing off-GCD. It consumes MP, there's already a penalty.
5- Reduce or remove the animation delay of Hallowed Grounds.

Other than that, I have misc. suggestions for the rest of the tanks:

DRK:
-Just remove the need of using DA even to sit down. Seriously.

GUN:
-Don't make it an offgcd fest.

WAR:
-Is okay.

I’m expecting the usual, huge buffs for the jobs that are struggling and huge nerfs for the ones that are doing fine and they’ll go so overboard on each front that they’ll just reverse the situation.

Then halfway through there will be a patch where they’ll overbuff SCH and WAR and call it a day til next expansion.

I want to say I would be surprised if Scholar gets more buttons. I really want to say that. But I won't. I hope we don't though.

I expect the tanks to be harder-split into proper MT jobs and OT jobs, because Yoshi kinda implied that.

Healers to still be a underwhelming due to a high degree of homogeneous skills.

This isn't those games, and it shouldn't implement that system. The current way of doing rotations is perfectly fine, the only issue is the combat loop for certain jobs aren't as rewarding as others/suffer from skill bloat. MCH/DRK are a few.

Curious: what makes you dislike that? Is there any scenario where you actually will use attack 2 of a combo chain without using attack 1? Or is it that you want the inherent ability of others to mess up? Would you be accepting of it being enabled as an option? Giving you the choice to either put all 5 abilities of a DRG combo in a row, while others are also allowed to just use the single button?

Edit: Or it would be upsetting to you if others have that option? How about this: would you be ok if combos required the previous action to ever execute the next step? That would at least allow me to macro up a priority list myself. I already do this today with Fang and Claw > Wheeling Thrust, and would appreciate freeing up space on my cross bar so I can have all my utility abilities at hand and only have my combos take 2 slots. I don't play monks, but think that's how they work already for them.

The combat loop in this game are not just the combos, but everything you weave in between combo actions. Like it or not, this is also a console game (I think more people actually play it on a PS4 than on PC) and some combos just take too many slots as it is right now. The Cross Bar UI has very limited space.

I honestly don't have a whole lot of expectations. The last time I did was in Stormblood and I ended up getting burned by Monk getting some of the most lazily designed skills the devs have ever conceived. But in spite of that I'm once again hopeful for Monk since the devs have said in at least one interview that it's under the microscope for an overhaul, and frankly it's one of the jobs in most need of it. There's an enormous number of skills that don't need to exist (One Ilm Punch, the Fists Stances), skills that are fairly ineffective at what they're supposed to do or even kind of counter intuitive (Tornado Kick and Riddle of Earth), skills that have been highly divisive or that people outright hate (Riddle of Fire), and one skill that is going to lose its (already pretty useless) function when TP goes away (Purification).

Otherwise the only two things I'm really hoping for is for all categories of Physical Damage types to be folded together so that Dragoon's Piercing monopoly can die, and I want them to fold Maiming and Scouting gear into Striking and Aiming respectively. Dragoon has no reason to have additional physical defense after they brought up it's magical defense and Scouting doesn't need its own category period. Most of the times at least two sets of the Striking/Maiming/Scouting/Aiming gear ends up being recolors also, so it's not like the devs are committed to the jobs aesthetic and indeed, they actually had Striking share the model of its primal gear with the Tanks instead of Maiming despite Dragoon being the one Armored Melee. All it really does is bloat the loot pools and make it less likely for you to get something you can use.

The developers said that the consolidated skills was PvP only. They do not have plans to introduce it into PvE content.

Also, controllers have access to the Crossbar (16), Extended Cross (16), and the W-Cross (16) for hotbar space. If you’re using them, you shouldn’t have issues with space, nor need to use macros. Source: I played on PS3, PS4 for a year, and now on PC with a controller.

My questions, again:
Is there ever any reason to execute Step 2 or 3 of a combo without Step 1?
Would it bother you if *I* had that option? In fact, does it bother anyone I can do that with F&C and WT?

Black Mage is apparently getting quite a few new abilities. Whether that's just new spells or a overhaul to the job, not sure which. I'm banking on the latter.

Hotkeys are crowded enough with a keyboard I can't imagine playing with a gamepad.

I was surprised at how much better things felt in PvP; it's definitely more slim than PvE can handle but the design was much more elegant and it just felt better to play. There weren't abilities taking up space for the sake of taking up space. I'd enjoy jobs a lot more if they borrowed some of that design in PvE.

Another thing I'd love to see is the removal of role actions, maybe implement some as job-specific abilities where appropriate, but that whole section is bloat.

No but that's part of the loop many combos split off into separate combos. Take Samurai for example, hakaze not only generates 5 kenki it can branch off into jinpu/shifu both that give a unique buff as well as kenki. So essentially without literally making the hotbars the exact same as they are for pvp(which would require dumbing down a lot of the weaving of the job by a lot) you'd have to hakaze before every combo anyway to efficiently generate kenki. I believe the same thing happens with DRG's heavy thrust combo.

You would need hakaze > jinpu > gekko + hakaze > shifu > kasha + hakaze > yukikaze on three separate buttons. I'm all for consolidating skills but I think a lot of it should just be bloated skills, like gap closers and such. Have them be the same skill but activate when you get within a certain range of an enemy.

You could argue that ninja and mch and MAYBE BLM would play the exact same but it would effect a lot of jobs.

DRG has 2 5 step combos, Heavy Thrust is part of rotations but not a step on any combo. I would not expect that ability to be added to any consolidated combo.

Hardly a valid argument at this point since the developers regularly go back on things that they've said they wouldn't do as of late.

Just because they go back on things they said they wouldn't do doesn't mean they will do it for everything. That is unlikely. I just practice and play the game a lot, and I also utilize my options. The Extended Cross is extremely simple to use, and I would recommend you practice using it.

This system would also not work on jobs that don’t have combos — SMN and SCH are two of the biggest offenders (along with PLD) in terms of button bloat, but SMN/SCH do not have combos. They work off priority systems. Likewise, there are plenty of jobs that do not have button bloat at all (BRD and WHM are two examples of this). So do we have consolidation for half the jobs, and then none for those who probably need it more than WAR or NIN or MNK (like SMN/SCH, because pet actions take up a lot of space)?


As for your question 2, it would bother me if it was forced on everyone, which is likely.

It wouldn't help most of the classes at all like Hyo's post already explains. The other problem is that if the combo system would be implemented it would be forced onto everyone just like it was forced onto everyone in pvp, which killed any fun in it for a lot of people.

Branching combos get one button per combo finisher and the escalation is not dependent on which button was pushed but it depends on which skill was used beforehand.
MNK would just get buttons escalating dependend of their forms, so 3 buttons for 9 skills and you can freely choose which skill of the corresponding form you want to use.

I try to temper my expectations. They've been pretty vague regarding battle system changes so I don't want to fall in love with any ideas born in my head, only to find out I was completely off the mark in May.

But what I'm hoping for is that the MCH rework they announced a while ago will do something to fix its clunkiness, ping-reliance and how hard it gets punished for any interruption in uptime. Like... come on. Wildfire is both too short to be reliable with even the slightest amount of lag and too long not to get screwed up by bosses deciding to invuln/phase/disappear before it detonates. Every fight has different timings for those moments, and knowing that one is coming up soon doesn't make the awful feeling of having to hold back our only significant way of contributing personal damage feel any less awful. Nobody else has an attack with (effectively) over 10s cast time...
And even if MCH is not supposed to be dealing consistent damage, then it must at least be able to match BRD in the support department.

Ahem... I should probably stop going before it turns into a rant. Moving on...

I hope role actions take an axe to the face. There are so many that would be better served merged into job-specific abilities instead of existing as separate buttons. Like... Diversion. Why isn't it a secondary effect of Embolden for RDM? Why does SCH/SMN have to have Lucid Dreaming when it could simply have more MP return on Energy Drain/Aetherflow instead? And why does Protect even need a button to cast? It might as well be a passive aura for all it does. Ugh!

But really my main reason for disliking them is how many hotkeys they take up. Their existence will one day cause me physical injury as I try to twist my fingers in ways they were never meant to bend.

Also, one little wish I have is gear consolidation. The 4 melee DPS do not need 3 gearsets between them. I wish left-side gear classification would match the way accessories are organised (Maiming + Striking = Slaying, Scouting + Aiming = Aiming)

Nobody wants that, doing DPS is already extremely easy when compared to pre HW where there were cross class buffs and buff timers we needed to be aware of. There hasn't been skill bloat as bad as that for several expansions now, it would ruin the challenge of PVE by doing this, and there can't be a "just give an option" because one is just easier to do and would give easier DPS.

Part of the challenge of learning a job is getting the muscle memory and timing down, it's actually rewarding when you get into your button groove. There's no need to take that away or alter it besides pruning oGCD skills.

Here is where I think you are wrong, I have no reference at hand but it is my understanding that YoshiP is indeed targeting the consolidation and removal of abilities for PvE, since there will be new abilities added wirh the expansion. I’m but recommending this get implemented, I am just expecting it to happen simply because it’s a low hanging fruit for action consolidation.

That feel when your party is doing just enough damage to push phases that causes the boss to leap off screen before wildfire goes off, but not enough dps to down the boss and you're tagged as the low dps.

I feel like ppl are misunderstanding one button combo for "one button for all attacks" maybe?

My understanding of this concept would be that it would be one button for each finisher... so it would primarily only affect melee dps and tanks as it is.


Tanks for example...

WAR would have 3 combo buttons: Storm's Eye, Storm's Path and Butcher Block. Consolidating 6 buttons down to 3.
PLD would have 3 combo buttons as well: Royal Authority, Goring Blade and Rage of Halone. Again, consolidating 6 buttons down to 3.
DRK would only have 2 combo buttons: Soul Eater and Power Slash. Consolidating 5 buttons down to 2.

So on PLD for example, there would be 3 buttons on the hotbar that would change as such.
Fast Blade >> Savage Blade >> Rage of Halone
Fast Blade >> Riot Blade >> Goring Blade
Fast Blade >> Riot Blade >> Royal Authority

And technically this would still allow for repetition of one-two combos, for whatever reason (assume maybe PLD or DRK want to spam Riot/Syphon for MP), as the Rage of Halone Combo would reset to Fast Blade as soon as Riot Blade is pressed because that combo string can no longer be continued.

EDIT: Forgot about the AoE combo...
For Melee DPS, DRG could get the most dramatic benefit (if Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust are tacked on to the combos... which they should be).
They'd have 3 combo buttons: Full Thrust and Chaos Thrust (which actually branch into F&G and Wheeling), and Sonic Thrust. Consolidating 10 buttons down to 3.

The two single-target combos would go:
True Thrust >> Vorpal Thrust >> Full Thrust >> Fang and Claw >> Wheeling Thrust
Impulse Drive >> Disembowel >> Chaos Thrust >> Wheeling Thrust >> Fang and Claw

NIN would get 3 combo buttons: Aoelian Edge, Shadow Fang and Armor Crush. Probably the least impact though since their combos don't branch until the last hit... it would only consolidate 5 buttons down to 3.

SAM would get 3 combo buttons: Gekko, Kasha and Yukikaze. Consolidating 6 buttons down to 3.
MNK could get 3 combos buttons as well: Snap Punch, Demolish and Rockbreaker. Consolidating 9 buttons down to 3.

The only difference with MNK is that the combos would progress based on the form, so they would go like this:

Dragon Kick >> Twin Snakes > Snap Punch (flank boosted attacks)
Bootshine >> True Strike >> Demolish (rear boosted attacks)
Arm of the Destroyer >> One Ilm Punch >> Rockbreaker ("special" attacks)

Regardless of whether Dragon, Boot or Arm is pressed, all 3 buttons would progress to their next step. If a form were to drop then all combo buttons would reset to the first step.


What makes MNK and SAM outliers though are Perfect Balance and Meikyo Shisui... and tbh... I'd rather see those 2 abilities get a rework so this system could work for all 7 jobs (8 assuming Gunbreaker will follow suit with at least an enmity combos and a damage combo).

A reduction in abilities that are either redundant or that make you play the same as another job *cough* ast *cough*.

Then some new tools and/or rotational abilities to play with

Get rid of/rework my worthless lillies and give me some freakin' utility already. I've already been shafted on a new healer this expansion—don't screw this up, too, dear god.

An overhaul of Physical Ranged DPS to be more "They excel at inflicting sustained damage, and also provide support for companions." BRD is really the only job that fits this quote, well and SMN but that's in the wrong category...

Adjust Melee to were you have two pure DPS and two lower DPS but debuff/buff.

Maybe the button combo from PvP to free up space for other actions, maybe.

Two main tanks and two off tanks.

Add CNJ back into WHM. Stone = Defense buff, Aero = Direct hit buff, Water = Magic buff

Tanks for example...

WAR would have 3 combo buttons: Storm's Eye, Storm's Path and Butcher Block. Consolidating 6 buttons down to 3.
PLD would have 3 combo buttons as well: Royal Authority, Goring Blade and Rage of Halone. Again, consolidating 6 buttons down to 3.
DRK would only have 2 combo buttons: Soul Eater and Power Slash. Consolidating 5 buttons down to 2.

So on PLD for example, there would be 3 buttons on the hotbar that would change as such.
Fast Blade >> Savage Blade >> Rage of Halone
Fast Blade >> Riot Blade >> Goring Blade
Fast Blade >> Riot Blade >> Royal Authority

And technically this would still allow for repetition of one-two combos, for whatever reason (assume maybe PLD or DRK want to spam Riot/Syphon for MP), as the Rage of Halone Combo would reset to Fast Blade as soon as Riot Blade is pressed because that combo string can no longer be continued.

EDIT: Forgot about the AoE combo...
For Melee DPS, DRG could get the most dramatic benefit (if Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust are tacked on to the combos... which they should be).
They'd have 3 combo buttons: Full Thrust and Chaos Thrust (which actually branch into F&G and Wheeling), and Sonic Thrust. Consolidating 10 buttons down to 3.

The two single-target combos would go:
True Thrust >> Vorpal Thrust >> Full Thrust >> Fang and Claw >> Wheeling Thrust
Impulse Drive >> Disembowel >> Chaos Thrust >> Wheeling Thrust >> Fang and Claw

NIN would get 3 combo buttons: Aoelian Edge, Shadow Fang and Armor Crush. Probably the least impact though since their combos don't branch until the last hit... it would only consolidate 5 buttons down to 3.
