Cross server Auction house?

You guys think this feature could work on FFXIV? i dont know too much about economy, but seems this way offer/demand proportions should be the same.

I think about it because long ago, yoshiP said that in a future you probably can change your server some times (like once a week or a month, etc). RMT could use it to buy millions in a server and profit in another one.

What do you think?

no, too abusable, not by rmt but by people in general to move items cross server

would make it easier for rmt so, no, wont work

I think this is just not possible with the current code of FFXIV. It sounds like a good idea tho for v2.0. It all depends how they'll handle the servers in v2.0 :)

It is indeed at this moment. It might be very good tho in v2.0, depending on how they'll handle the servers there. But for now, no. :)

i mean is more abusable to buy 100 million in shards in the cheaper server, and in a week, move to a expensive shards server and sell them, that is the way RMT will do it, i think with a global auction house (only 1 for all servers) there is not rmt chances to profit.

it has nothing to do with rmt but economy in general

some servers have different prices on various items for a reasonm either due to lack of that item on the server because its not farmed or because of how much gil is floating around between active players

if you remove the servers individuality you blend everything together and punish those servers in which prices would normaly be lower by forcing them to pay higher prices, and on servers where gil is more plentiful they will get cheaper prices


each server needs to be able to stand on its own, the server itself needs to be able to farm its own items and not rely on other servers to do it for them



also, with this idea, anyone can toss any item from server to server for free(1 gil sales anyone?) so it would then be abusable in that regard, and players werent meant to be able to move their gear/items etc etc from 1 server to another

it makes it easier to rmt because, they wont need to have high lvl character ons on ever server. as of now they have to manage 18 markets with all those characters.

RMT Aside, the beauty of having separate servers is so separate communities can be created which has their own economy. Cross-server everything is really going to cheapen the play experience in the log run lol.

Universal MW (between all cities) would do just fine. I highly doubt he'll introduce a constant server move option, if anything they might adapt the 3 month cooldown period that XI has, so if you're that desperate, you'll be spending more money in the long run just to make virtual money to sell.

Well, the upside would be that the economy might be less stagnant than it is right now. I mean, if you do an item search, most < 40 gear is not even available on my server. People just wing it in whatever they can find at low/mid levels. With more buyers, maybe things will sell faster and at least some people will bother with crafting and listing those items again.

The downside is that people will be able to transfer wealth across servers. But I'm not sure this is really a downside. What is the net negative impact of people moving their own assets anyway?

i dont think that u are correct, if u unite all AH, price will auto-adjust, i mean, u cant sell that thing so expensive coz from other server it is more cheaper, and cheaper resources will go faster than how it was on expensives servers.

Dont forget that there are much more offer like u said, but too a big demand too.


your last lines are wrong, toshi said that they plan to allow us to move from server to server. That mean you can go with all your items once a week or once a month to another server.. no sense to move items using AH if you can use migration.

if stuff isnt available on any server now, why would it become available if all the wards were connected server to server? it wont, itl basicaly change nothing

and to top it off, you then only see the top 20 prices between all servers and not just your own so itl be even harder to sell stuff in several areas

Well the idea is that a bigger pool of people would buy stuff at a faster rate, which would encourage crafters to list items that before weren't selling very fast. If 1% of 1000 people want a particular item each week, then maybe 10 will sell in a week. It's too slow for a crafter to thrive on so they don't bother even listing the item. Most of those 10 people don't get the item they are looking for. If 1% of 10,000 people want a particular item each week, then you have 100 selling in a week. That's a much more interesting number. It's potentially somebody's paycheck.

A lot of crafters, for convenience sake alone, like to play the market with only a handful of specific items at any given time. If they make a bunch of a single item that moves slowly, they've made a long profit queue for themselves, so items like this don't get made at all and therefore none are sold, despite the fact that there is some demand. If it moves just that much faster, someone will fill the niche and the ball starts rolling again.

Overall I think cross server markets would go a long way in bringing some life back into the economy. As for the negative effects of doing something like this, I have a nagging feeling that I'm missing something potentially pretty bad, but I don't quite know what.

To be honest that would sort itself out after several months.

If the servers were truly cross server then the price of an item would average out roughly the same on all servers.

It wouldn't even be cross servers it would be more like a centralised market.

Of course SE could never pull something like this off, and sure as hell couldn't with the current servers.

bigger pool of buyers doesnt apply

the same people are going to be buying the same items
the same stuff will sell

the problem is instead of just competing with your own server for the sales you now compete with every other server too

yes you have more buyers, but thats completely negated by having more sellers


having more sellers to compete with and more buyers does not mean making gear no one buys still, especialy when 99% of what people make now is sold at a loss, why would anyone in their right mind make lower level gear if it wont sell for what it costs to make it anyway


the entire idea of cross server sales just doesnt work, the servers are seperated for a reason, let them stay that way

I prefer to see different servers have different economic situations, makes being "On a server" mean something. Cross server anything really kills the community. Personally I'm still praying cross server dungeon finders hit the scrap bin as well, of course it's just my opinion but eh.

while we are at it, if this is such a good idea, why not just combine all servers inbto 1 mega server, its the same thing after all

Because you would need a super computer to handle that much information.

The reason servers exist separately is because its easier to process information in small chunks, if it were possibly to have everyone on one server it would happen.

It's essentially the same system as allowing PS2(3)/360/PC users to play on the same FFXI servers so they could do it if they want, there's just realistically no reason to have a cross-server economy.

@Player pool:

If no one creates say a steel celata, no one will suddenly create it just because people across the servers can buy it. If an item isn't supplied ever it won't suddenly be supplied. While true you can have more buyers in a sense, you won't automatically want to make something you've never wanted to before.

Sorry, I edited my previous post for a little more clarity. What I mean is these items currently move so slow that sellers don't list them. Thus there are no sellers, or at least very few, and that small niche of 10 buyers a week goes unnoticed. When it's 100 buyers a week, at least somebody can make money off of it, it's at least a halfway worthwhile niche for someone to fill when compared to the 10. Though the demand as a percentage is the same with a merger or not, there is a point where real number demand gets so low that supply just freezes, and a lot of items are at that point now.

Some items move slowly because there's almost no reason to buy them for example. The only new found reason is spiritbond fodder and an economy can't be supported on spiritbond fodder. This is why I actually liked FFXI's itemization because as you're leveling there's always going to be the useless pieces of gear, the good looking but not as usual piece of gear and then the sought after pieces of gear.

In XIV, they tried to go with an absolute freedom system which is what made pretty much everything worthless lol. Materia is somewhat correcting this and AF will definitely have a place but it seems that in the end till they finish going with the 'Required:" system that they're moving towards, anything that wasn't in demand before, won't suddenly become in demand even with potentially a lot more buyers.

They can't even fix the crappy marketwards we have now.

Yoshida said himself that they looked into linking the wards together (grid/uldah/limsa) and it wasn't possible on the current servers, what makes you think they could link all servers in this manner ?

The system behind linking cross-servers is the same operations as allowing multiple platforms play on the same servers when most online games only allow platform specific servers by default, so they more than have the ability to make cross server market system, there's just truly no reason to.

So it's not actually completely different, since cross-server interaction is actually pretty easy to do. They can't with current servers, but they can in general as they've employed it before with their previous FF MMO.

No its not.

Regardless of the platform that the game runs on it spews out the same code to the server.

So for FFXI's example a PS2 sends the same data to the same server as a 360 or PC, yes the game is coded different for each platform but the server runs the same code across all three.

Cross server is completely different because in most cases the severs aren't linked unless they are in a cluster which FFXIV's aren't.

FFXIV will be moving to small clusters in 2.0 which is how they will achieve the cross server content finder, but even then this will be limited to a small cluster of 3-4 servers.
So only those 3-4 servers will be able to play with one another.

I am all for the idea in this thread, but its just not feasible on the current server and most likely not on 2.0's either.

Although it would be possible to have 3-4 servers have cross server market wards. (but not all of them)

anyway, like I say cross server and cross platform are completely different things.

Having more people to trade with is always good. I just doubt the benefits are worth the costs of implementation. Although I am not entirely certain how costly the implementation is... so meh.
