Moderators have recently moved the stickied thread for the NA tech support for the NTT lag, rubberbanding & 90k disconnections to the "separate support required" forum which has locked the thread from receiving more replies from customers having connectivity issues due to SE's ISP provider NTT.

Not working, worked... Meaning no other progress will be made from what I am reading...

In my eyes, this is the team blatantly ignoring any and all future reports regarding this issue and it is extremely discouraging to see how it was swept under the rug.

I'm honestly concerned with the quality of support regarding this issue and may consider unsubbing after these long 8+ years I've been with this game.

The server's location is one of the key concerns as to why such a large amount of people have come forward with these reports. I humbly request a NA community team member make a statement regarding a plan to alleviate this problem instead of a copy pasted tech support response that does nothing to solve the issue at hand.


Edit: Look at my ticket regarding all of my tracerts since January 2018. The issue extends back further, but I've documented when I could each time the NTT Network failed to operate normally during my raids/trials/etc.

I have port forwarded, uninstalled my anti'virus, called my ISP 2304702934 times, had 239087234 techs come to my home, called Square-Enix, posted on the NA tech support forums, purchased a new modem, etc etc etc.

Problem is NTT.net.

Does no other player for this game have NTT. net and live in California/Texas? Like seriously?

I can understand how this may be perceived in a callous or uncaring manner, since further support through that thread is no longer possible. However, the thread was moved because the specific issues and investigations related to the concerns we were able to gather from it had been looked into by our infrastructure teams and the upstream ISP. The results of that investigation were contained within this response:

Also, enough of this in particular. There is absolutely NOTHING our ISPs can do with a service outside of their network. This suggestion is useless and considered an excuse to drop a customer's ticket with a inconclusive resolution.

Hi Kerwin, we're both Legacy players, and there are countless other players who have been playing this game for some time and just only now having such horrible service since the data center relocation. You would think they would have already moved them back or something. What, 40% of the NA playerbase got a decrease in ping, while 20% of the playerbase cant play the game from 5pm-midnight CST? I dont think thats a very good trade off. Personally.

I'm not to sure what deal SE got exactly with moving the servers to the west coast like they did. Increased server size and storage maybe. But the trade off was terrible and not worth it if this problem persists like it has been.

With the recent DDoS attacks mixing with the NTT problems, this game has been very hard to enjoy. I love FFXIV. I love everything that has happened to it. It has evolved into something beautiful.

But all that comes to nothing if I can't stay connected and constantly lag/rubberband during the few hours a night I get off from work. It's pretty exhausting...

Agreed. I used to raid/do trials at night on my days off cause thats when most people do those types of things as there are more parties available, but i havent been able to since 4.0 due to NTT.net.

I thankfully have all mornings off so i can get a handful of things done, and can sometimes get lucky to pug savage, but its quite rare. Else i'd be in the same boat youre in and ready to unsub. I've even contemplated it due to my inability to double weave on DRG during the night raids. Just now i couldnt even stay connected to do a dungeon though. It really fluctuates. Its pretty bad sometimes.

It's every night for me. I've contacted tech support over the phone, via email, via the forums. And every single time I get a copy pasted template response each time. They won't accept responsibility as well! Square Enix's ISP NTT is causing issues for it's customers, and they blame them for it and won't do anything about it!

Rumor has it...Comcast is intentionally sabotaging the route.

The Net neutrality laws are not yet abolished for yet another month or two. I would expect this type of thing to happen afterwards. But at this point, I'm willing to pay Comcast for their "highway" route so I can get a stable connection... gg

Do we have to wait another year for proper support? 5.0? Several Years? Yet another data center move? It can be infuriating to wait most of a year and the only proper solution is to shell out even more money for a VPN.

We've long since noticed it's your ISP's fault and yet it's always "We're collecting data." This would make more sense if the issue was new. It is not.

This is... ignorant to say the least. We have different ISPs, no connection problems to other games (hosted on different ISPs no less), and for the last 8+ months (or whenever stormblood launched) a portion of the player base has had this lag issue at a certain time interval each day. The common link in all of this? NTT, squares ISP for North America's Data Center.

But no since we're not "ISP technicians" we're magically unqualified to say absolutely anything on this topic despite all of the data "we" have collected over all of this time. Even using a VPN routes around the NTT problem but that tends to cost more money on top of what we already pay. It's not like we haven't been collecting data of our own or anything.

Maybe, just maybe, we have an actual point unlike you other than to sound condescending.

Meanwhile I'm a legacy player and have had my quality of life improved by the move. It varies from person to person. Just because you are legacy doesn't mean anything lol.

My join date is even further back, does that mean I have priority? Yay!

At least the entire game isn't unplayable for everyone from 5-9PM EDT anymore like when the servers were in Montreal.

Don't derail this thread. It's not about Legacy. And good for you, I'm glad you are problem free. But be mindful of the people who do have issues and show them a little respect.

The problem is people have been saying the move was terrible for all but a small few, and been really loud about it. The game generally runs fine, and the fact that the issues happen mostly only during certain times leads to congestion being the main problem. Which means either the isps need to run your route through a more robust node, or the owner of the node needs to upgrade their stuff. Both are not likely to happen, as money and effort are involved, which companies don't like to use.

Losing customers will cost the company money in the end. NTT is Square Enix's ISP. They are held responsible for the end results provided to their customers. The service they are providing to Square Enix is poor, and thus reflects directly on Square Enix as such. If they continue to ignore this problem, they will lose customers, money, and receive poor reviews which will effect overall sales.

This is a problem. And it needs to be addressed and not swept under the rug to be ignored and hope it goes away.

They are not ignoring the problem, but as they said it is out of their control but will still do what they can to find a solution. I get you are frustrated but let us be civil here.

Comcast is a notorious ISP and company.

I have them and despise their service. From the bottom to the top they will always try to take advantage of you. Even with a business line. Every day I check for Google Fiber to become available to me. I just want to drop Comcast already.

I also wanted to point out that you are now stating that initially you wanted to condense similar reports to that NA stickied, but now you would rather have people start their own individual thread and overflow to support forum like before?

You realize how many different people made reports about NTT that are within that locked thread and how having each person make a new topic would be for the Tech forum?

At the very least give us somewhere to post our tracerts and concerns instead of having the community spam that forum with repeated issues.

These guys aren't wrong, I can confirm that NTT is the issue. I work infrastructure and its pretty obvious these are points between two routers...

Just saying its pretty obvious that the issue is on NTT's side. Specifically the router(s) at San Jose is where the issues are coming from. This is all provided from the tracerts that they have provided. SE should be raising a stink with NTT, or at least acknowledge that the router(s) at San Jose is actively being DOS'd. There is a bottle neck, it belongs to NTT, and they have a right to be upset.

I'll chime in like I did in the big thread.

On Comcast (which contrary to most people has been nothing short of extraordinary for me) I had 40ms and 0 packet loss when servers were in Canada. However, I'm not so naive to suggest others didn't have problems with the infamous L3 node.

That said since the server move, with 100% consistency I am unable to play this game post 7:30PM EST. It results in 200+ ms, 10%+ packet loss consistently every day, without fail. The issue is always with the San Jose CA NTT node, which is SE's responsibility to ensure is running efficiently as they are SE's chosen ISP partner.

I have resorted to Mudfish to be able to play this game. It sucks. I've never once needed a VPN to play ANY GAME over the course of 10+ years of gaming. Not once. Ever. I've had Comcast come out, I've talked to SE who gave me the runaround, and I've spoken with NTT NOC who confirmed that the only thing I can do is have SE contact them for breach of SLA because I am not NTT's customer, SE is.

The thing is, this type of stuff happens a lot, but other companies get it fixed. It's just not super common to hear about it.

Fun fact - I can connect to a AUSTRALIAN WoW server from the east coast with less ping than I can to FF14 post 7:30 PM. That should tell you something.

The lag and routing is so bad I’m having to essentially pay double my sub for this game since I have to purchase a similarly priced vpn subscription just to be able to pvp. I’ve never needed a vpn before for any game or this game when it was on the old servers

That right there is pretty much everything you need to know about the situation, folks.

I don't know too much about servers and such. But why is it that:

World of Warcraft,
Guild Wars,
Guild Wars 2,
The Elder Scrolls Online,
RIFT,
The Secret World,
Destiny,
Destiny 2,
Star Wars: The Old Republic,
A million more games with online stuff

Have no issues playing just fine but this sole game does have issues and then it's appereantly our PC, router, modem?
I'm from EU and the game is unplayable for me, whenever I enter a duty I get a DC, I'm actually using a VPN now (tunnelbear) and I tunnel to Germany (The EU datacenter is also in Germany) now it works without issues.
However all these other games above have no issues what so ever, I also did not had to port forward any games but I had to do for FF XIV, I remember we had to port forward in the early 2000 years.
And another thing back in 2014 to 2017 there was no issues in this game (I didn't even need to port forward) and then since 2017 suddenly once boom, no longer playable.

^ Can somebody explain this to me? SE says it's a routing issue, but all these other games don't have routing issues then? Why does SE have this issue?

Golden rule of XIV, nothing gets fixed unless the japaneses also complain about it.
The only place with good routing to cali is cali itself, they knew and they didn't care and will never move the servers again.

That's the scam though, they want you to pay higher rates even though you don't have to. They pretend like it's an issue by throttling your connection only to turn around and say "BUT" if you pay an extra 50/month your connection is magically better. The only thing stopping it from being "magically" better is them pushing a button to reduce the amount of throttle they put on your connection.

I was formerly a TWC now a Charter customer. I have had lag ever since the move to California. Based on tracert and wireshark sniffer traces the delays always start within the NTT network. They have some of the screwiest routing I have seen in a long time to the point where I've seen 8 or 9 NTT backbone hops to get to San Jose. As to qualifications since it has come up in the thread, I am a retired Senior Software Engineer who spent 7 years doing TCP/IP stack Architecture and design for large system operating systems. I also spent those 7 years as a company representative to the IETF standards body that oversees the internet architecture and design.

I'd been following the NA thread as I too am caught up in this issue, hoping to find a resolution as my ISP cannot help me since the node is beyond their network scope. I'm not as severely impacted as some on here as usually I only get a few 90k errors each session but I have given up on dungeons and any kind of raiding because of it. I have to go to a friend's house if I want to play because they do not route through that node for some reason.

I can't do trials without d/cing every few minutes. I don't have this issue in any other MMO. (Swotor/Aion). It's really frustrating - I've tried flushing the IP and nada, nope 90k. It's frustrating when you go into a trial and no one gets the I'm having the 90k bug.

Try raiding in Kefka Sigmascape savage where your raid group depends on you to be at your best. But you never can be because of the problem that persists with NTT every night. An issue completely out of your control.

See. I'm on the west coast, and I've not once experienced a 90k problem (well at least not one that "everyone" experienced at the same time, and I mean everyone, where the data center was congested.) I'm not naive and going to go "see the problem is on your side", because routing is not the same to every city. Mine goes from my ISP via Telia to NTT (Seattle->San Jose->Sacramento) before reaching the FFXIV servers. 30ms ping time.

One of my machines at AZ NAP goes via LA and then follows the same San Jose->Sacramento path, 20ms. Where as another machine located in the bay area , actually takes the same Telia path my ISP does at San Jose, but has 4ms.

Select Sacramento (if your data center is Aether or Primal), and then ping your own IP address to see if you get packet losses.
Mana, Elemental, and Gaia are in Tokyo. I actually get random packet loss to these machines, it does not use NTT from my ISP (132ms), but does for my AZ NAP machine (120ms). The bay area machine goes over flagtel (also 120ms.)

Maybe I just got lucky, but I'm on the east coast (SC) and I have no issues, EVER. Statistically speaking, what percentage of the player base has these issues? 5%? 25%? I don't think anyone really knows.

I'm not a technological genius, but I do oversee operations of a company and, from a business perspective, I'm not draining my companies capital to "fix" an issue that a fraction of my customer base experiences occasionally. I'm guessing this is where NTT is coming from, not SE, as even SE's total traffic on their network is only a small percentage of their total traffic.

From SE's point of view, I'm sure they are concerned about the complaints, but their talks with NTT are likely to the effect of:
[NTT] "Ok, you want us to overhaul our infrastructure, the cost is X, since we are doing this specifically for YOU (SE), you are helping foot the bill"
[SE] "We can't do that"
[NTT] "Well, all data shows we are within the SLA terms of our contract, unless we breach those, you are bound by our agreement and we are not bound to make upgrades"
[SE] "Is there any fix to the situation"
[NTT] "If you have individual customers complaining about their routing through our network, they will need to work out a solution on their end to change the way they are routed"

SLA's are all based on averages as there will always be best-case and worst-case customer experiences. Really, all that can be done is to gather data and wait until NTT organically needs to upgrade.

It's an every day issue. Not occasionally.

Also without knowing the details regarding the agreement between SE and NTT, this is just speculation though.

You do make sense, but it disgusts me to think how they would tell us to "deal with it" as a resolution.

It sounds as though SE has tried but cannot reach a satisfactory resolution with NTT. I guess the only option is to keep complaining. Though it is very interesting to me that everyone with this issue is a Comcast customer.

Cox Internet has also been heavily effected as well. The original NA thread was based off the many reports from there.

Please, don't take this as a derail or argument. I just want to put in a different perspective:

The phrases "heavily effected" and "many reports" have been, in one form or another used quite a bit in this topics various threads. What people lack is a high level perspective, what we see as "heavily effected" because we see a hundred, or a thousand, people post; is actually a fraction of a percent of total traffic; which doesn't even qualify as "minimally effected".

What we see as "many reports" because it takes us an hour or two to read through all the responses on a thread, in reality is not even a blip on the radar compared to the total number of people who run data through their network at any given moment.

The total data traffic created by ALL combined FFXIV users compared to the total data traffic on the NA Network as a whole, is a fraction of a fraction of a percent.

These issues are HUGE to us because we are looking at them in a microscopic vacuum of our particular circumstances, when, if you take a large step back and look at the big picture, we aren't even in it.

Ok? but this mindset doesn't make the game any less unplayable. We know we're not the majority of internet users on this route, but that doesn't matter.
The people who are actually affected by this are trying to solve the problem so we can actually play the game we pay for.

Regardless of size. The issue is there and it doesn't change the effect.

The thing is, this type of stuff happens a lot, but other companies get it fixed. It's just not super common to hear about it.

Fun fact - I can connect to a AUSTRALIAN WoW server from the east coast with less ping than I can to FF14 post 7:30 PM. That should tell you something.
