Eureka Background Info + Updates Hinted At During "Yoshi-P's Walk"

For those players who haven't played FF11, just imagine the crafted ilv 320 (not 350) NQ weapon being as strong as the Kefka weapon (Ilv375) and only for dark knight).

Yup, they recreated ffxiv 1.0 perfectly, I do not think "a MMO" is the correct translation though. I think it should of said "we were trying to recreate the feel of FFXIV 1.0 to see how the modern playerbase would react to it."

Maybe could have told us all of this before it? I mean they barely talked about it only hyping it up without any real information. They could have showed us their plans, like how many parts will Eureka have, what will be the content per part..so that we can know what we will get. Dont go around on Fanfests and stuff and hype it up as something so unseen in MMO, so new and innovative and then just talk about it afterwards and say that it should just give people the feeling of starting out in a new MMO. (And when I think back that the start of FF14 nearly turned me off from playing even further than its no wonder that I dislike Eureka since its even worse than that..)

If you have more mechanics couldnt they just put them into the first part too? Its good that they at least change some of the stuff but its seems to be only minimal changes, not about getting more content itself.

Also a bit strange that Yoshida did not even do the content itself till now..I mean feeling guilty for these bad bugs is kinda fine..but why should that stop someone from playing the content..I mean if he did it for a time maybe he would have some own ideas how to make it better or why players dont like certain things.

My takeaways are as follows:

(1) Why is Yoshi-P and the development team not speaking directly to the community via the forums and a proper Live Letter? Why is the communication not bi-directional? As a player, the single largest frustration I've had with Eureka is the utter silence on the part of the development team up until now. This "walk" of Yoshi-P's feels like a half-arsed attempt at damage control, not an honest attempt for SE to engage players in a dialogue that leads to a better product, a dialogue that has been sorely missing for years now.

(2) How in the f**k were things like Level Sync not introduced in the first place? "Too convenient" my ass. If SE was worried about convenience, they wouldn't have so badly imbalanced FATE rewards vs. monster-grinding rewards. Things like the lack of Level Sync, the atrocious crystal exchange system, and the immensely problematic object culling system are things that any halfway-decent QA process should have identified before the content was ever released. So, did SE simply ignore these lacks, or is their QA process that bad? These issues have crippled the player reaction to Eureka right out of the gate. Fixing the content later isn't nearly as effective as getting it right the first time.

(3) In regards to solo options, see my above comment: tossing this in as a response to massive community uproar is not nearly as effective as getting it right the first time.

I'll repeat something I've said many times before: the FFXIV community is very forgiving, as MMO communities go. Speaking personally, as disappointing as Eureka was for me in terms of shallow content, I'd have held off on major criticism if it had been released as a polished platform upon which new functions and game play elements could be built. If Level Sync had been there out of the gate, if it didn't carry so many Instance downsides (no /tells, no queuing for Roulettes, etc.), if it had legitimate solo options, if balance wasn't so badly skewed toward mindless FATE trains - if all of these exceedingly basic issues had been identified and resolved prior to Eureka's release, I would have gotten behind it as a good start. Too shallow for a long-term solution, but a good start.

Instead, as usual, it feels like we're beta-testing lazily developed content. If SE is truly going to build upon this platform to make real, solid content - content with some depth - then good on them. That's a follow-up that we haven't seen before in FFXIV, and I'll look forward to their future efforts. But they really shoot themselves in the foot when the initial core release has so many problems.

Now that I think about it, isn't trying to reanimate Right after the launch of an MMO a bad idea to begin with? From what I understand, when a new game launches, it is met with tons of complaints of all the issues in it. with FFXI we got it refined, on an expansion when it was released outside japan. So my only experience with a MMO at launch would be ffxiv 1.0. The experience holds true though in this light, basically no content.

When they kept hyping it to be new and innovative, I feel lied to. Recreating buggy and lack of content systems is not innovative and different, hence the word recreating...

+1 agree fully. Though I am confused on the solo thing, didn't they say you could reasonably progress solo when they where making this? So why the 180? how is making a 180 recreating old feel? unless the recreation here is intentionally misleading us for that new MMO feel? (basically what I mean is, did they seriously take this to the extreme literal level of recreating a MMO feel by lying to us on how the content was going to be?)

ya, loot wise it doesn't offer what made a "launch" mmo interesting. In XI, it's not that people wanted an Emperor Hairpin cause it looked it, they wanted it because it was a stat boost that they could use for a good number of levels without having to replace it.

When you introduce this gear and just make it glamour, you bring no worth to the gear other than XI nostalgia and that only goes so far.

What SE should of done if they wanted to mimic the nostalgia is introducing spawn NMs that players could fight with a chance to get loot.

The loot in question could do the following.

Increased lootbox Drops.

Increased Magicite Boost

Increased xp Gains

Increased Anemos Crystal Drops

and for a super rare item "Automatically swaps your magicite to the proper weakness of the enemy to deal the most dmg"

Boost like this would make Eureka gear interesting but by only having the magicite/board as a means of "customization" they brought 0 of the old school MMO nostalgia.

The idea of having to fight Leaping Lizard 20 times to get their boots for the DEX/AGI doesn't exist in this current form on Eureka.

Yeah I mean when even those that truly enjoy it (and its great that people do that) had quite a lot of the same improvements as the ones that dislike it. Also if you decide to use so many people per instance the server should manage that. So level synch, no laggs and stuff like that with NM and the exchange for items...these things should have never been part of the improvements because they should have been in there at release. Now we will likely get some changes in 4.3x which is still some time away which might be too late to make those that came late interested in this. At the same time if new Eureka parts come with future content that just means that we will probably have to level through the first part too.

The problem for me with the "feeling like starting a new MMO launch" is that a new MMO has its own kind of "magic". You go out into a whole new world which you dont know about, a whole start of a story and journey. Here you have a beautiful landmass with re-used monsters..(why do they have the same monsters when they are from a different country?) and the story line is not really there. So all you do is grind. With the exact same abilites you already did for who knows many hours, with the nearly exact same mechanics for monsters and NM. There are no story quests that even MMOs like Black deserts had, you have not a great amount of new characters you interact with. No side activities, nothing. Just grinding the same monsters you already now. I mean its fine if you like that but thats imo not something a MMO truly starts with. Yes its slow to start a new MMO with low amount of skills but still you have distractions that can help it. (Quests and stuff like that) Everything is completely new.

I cant imagine that I still would play this game if the start had been that way. Only grinding monsters and maybe 1 or two search quests and nothing more until lvl 20..I mean it was still a harsh start and I did let it rest for a while before I tried it again but I would have never tried it again if it was like Eureka.

They could have given us a big amount of nice quests. Maybe where we learn more about the place and the people. And maybe some daily stuff. Then when the next Eureka came around you could introduce us to more and more. But we right now have nothing next to killing..and only a promise that the next parts will get some more mechanics..(heck even that sentence sounded more like we dont get much of them..)

Just to inform you that Yoship's Walk and FF14 Adrenaline TV are both JP official shows that exist for a while.
If you are playing on JP client you often will see the announcement of date and server and encourage people to participate.
Yoship's Walk is dealing with PvE and Adrenaline TV is dealing with PvP.
Both shows are usually involving devs show up in a designated server to get close with the community.
We never got it because.... they dont speak English.

This is the problem, even the LL are mostly in JP and the ones with active translations are mmmh......well...let's say they don't really live up to my standards.
The problem is not that devs do not speak with the community imho it's more about beign a linguistic barrier that the company HAS to break one way or the other

They do speak to community, just not this community because of the language.
FF14 is counterpart of WoW.
WoW devs like ghostcrawler used to only communicate with English community because he speaks English only.
All other WoW community likes China, Korean, and Taiwan don't even get a chance.

Because English is a world language which is probably taught in a huge amount of countries. Them talking in English with their community will reach far more people than the FF14 devs only speaking Japanese. Nobody is asking them to have a discussion in every single language..but English is even taught in Japan so there is simply no excuse imo.

And its bad that they are not speaking to this community since NA and EU together as the western community are bigger than the japanese one.

Not surprised they are a lazy bunch at Activision-blizzard.
Anyway as said, don't have anything against community stream like duty commenced, but imho they should make those communications more visible even for us

Trust me
They do teach English in Japan but on average Japanese has weakest English among East-Asian nations.
The type of English you learned in Asian high schools is for exam only.

Does not excuse them to keep ignoring glaring problems of this game and not speaking to us. SE makes tons of money, they can easily hire a hand or 2 to communicate with us.

Fair point. However... there's no reason why SE can't provide feedback to the rest of their player base via text. I can understand where video and live events are hosted in Japanese and translated after the fact. I don't need a video of Yoshi-P speaking English, or a live Reddit thread of him responding to US players. But is a simple forum post acknowledging the problems too much to ask? Or a survey asking for our feedback? Based on server counts, the US and EU markets make up roughly half of FFXIV's subscribers. They need to figure out how to talk to us.

As a note I actually wonder how much we lose in the translations, fan transaltions are a thing, but since that live translations were they translated wrongly the name of a spell I'm a bit more cautious on that.

Not going to say that the woman doing it is a bad translator, but I think that since translators not necessarely play the game, they should at least provide infos on what they are actually talking about

Edit: And imho having ENG client having a different nomenclature than the rest of the clients is stupid if you ask me

The fact that they need two separate hotfixes to address lockbox junk and anemos carpal tunnel syndrome is really annoying considering they should have seen this in any testing they did. The f act they need to spend time fixing basic mistakes draws them away from other fixes they could make, too.

The level sync is needed, yes, but it sounds like it will be in 3.3x when they release the next eureka zone, and i'd like some clarification if it would be global to all instances or just to let people who didn't do the first zone to catch up.

The sad thing is, some of the team are actually decent at English. I knew someone who met Yoshi and said they spoke about 20 minutes in only English and my friend said he was very understandable with his attempt at spoken English. Foxclon as another example, is pretty fluent in English and has had interviews where he shows this.

This is a good thing, camping timed spawn NMs while competing against the entire server for a slim chance at a loot drop was by far the most horrible part of XI, and I don't care how much people try and retroactively justify it, that element of game design should stay in the past where it belongs. Good riddance.

The thing that stands out most to me in that Reddit thread is the comment that the devs love it and can't wait to go home and play it.

1. The devs made the instance they wanted to play (and that explains a whole heck of a lot honestly)

2. YoshiP is taking liberties to make it sound like it's more popular/well-constructed than many players seem to believe (he has done this before)

I was kind of hoping that the promotion meant YoshiP was moving on and we would get some new blood with new ideas.

The part about not wanting to make it too convenient is his way of saying some hardship should be preserved I think. Can't be as casual and convenient as doing fates in a standard field zone like The Fringes. Enemies of a higher elemental level than the player cap and penalty of exp loss on release are part of this design principle.

I feel like this statement should raise doubts.. Just because the content has bugs he refuses to play/test it out for himself on live servers.. Hes working with second-hand information at that point.. He needs to actually get on live and play this to see what the issues are first-hand.. They have been hyping this up for a long time and his statement leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Also why is this video/information not on the lodestone or translated by a community member so more players can see.

Yep. As much as I love Yoshi and everything he's done, I feel he's playing the game too safe. On the plus side, now that he's an executive officer, he might have more weight to have more money thrown at this game. Meaning more investments made, more content coming in, better servers, etc. It's an interesting time for sure.

EDIT: This was a mistranslation. I rewatched the stream and what they were actually talking about was an "elemental level sync" where your elemental level is also synced during F.A.T.E.s. They are planning this so NMs don't die in 10 seconds when you have players with 4~5 magicytes at a low level F.A.T.E)

While an Elemental Level-Synch is a good change, that isn't what people were hoping for. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed. I'm glad NMs won't be dying in seconds but I'd still like to be able to play with my friends.

I agree with the people expressing surprise that Yoshi P is not actually playing Eureka.
When a piece of content is this controversial I would have thought getting into the game would be a priority; it's the only way to see how it feels from a player perspective and a good way of gauging player reactions.

Beside ppl are not reading it fully since he said that the reason he's not playing was for the guilt of the rollback bug and quite frankly he probably playtested it already so that's a moot point

I am not saying that he should quit or anything but isnt that going to be a bit much for him? Two normal jobs and now even that part too? Just looking at this as a human being I am kinda a bit nervous about his health condition...but yes new people might get new ideas into this.

@Hestzhyen: The thing that stood out most to me was that he himself has not played it but they are already planning changes..did he mean that he never played it with his normal character or truly never played it at all? But yeah if that is content what all the devs seems to truly love we wont see much changes that will go against their love..which makes me a bit nervous about future Eureka parts..

I agree with the people expressing surprise that Yoshi P is not actually playing Eureka.
When a piece of content is this controversial I would have thought getting into the game would be a priority; it's the only way to see how it feels from a player perspective and a good way of gauging player reactions.

Mindless repetitive grinding is more popular in Japan than it is elsewhere. It could mean exactly what it sounds like: they designed it for themselves and Japan, and they don't care a whole lot about the rest of us. I mean, if they leave the train alone at least we can get through it that way.

There are two types of english knowing Japanese. Those who feel comfy speaking it like Soken and Foxicon and those who don't like Yoshida. That has been a thing for decades. It's also a generation thing. Japan in some aspects of their culture is a few decades behind us because of the mindset the country had after WWII. English and anything American wasn't thought of as cool until they culturally had their 60's which didn't happen in the 60's and then them young kids felt if you wanted to be cool you'd show off how much English you knew.

Anyway I'm glad there are changes coming.
