Okay we're a year into HW, where's storage diversity?

I have to say, it's getting a little ridiculous at this point. I am seeing people leaving their FCs to make their own just for more storage.

I've been pretty patient but I'm really starting to believe that SE just wants more money. That has been discussed to death, and I'm sorry for bringing it up. But I'm just really frustrated seeing our communities being fragmented as a result.

Just a few rough ideas, off the top of my head:
1.Gearset storage using tickets like in XI.
(For those who don't know, if you collect a full set of gear, you can trade it all to an NPC and receive a ticket [not held item] for retrieval.)

2. If you buy a house, you get a storage chest with it. If you share the plot with tenants, you may give permissions to it.
(Houses are /not cheap./ This one is a no-brainer.)

3. I've seen this one a few times, but the ability to destroy gear for the purpose of adding it to a glamour book.
(Everything else stays the same, still need prisms, etc.)


Before HW, I had the bright idea of buying a third retainer to store glamour items. Now months after it has launched, I feel like I'm having a lot of issues with space management myself. I craft, so material storage has nearly doubled. I have all jobs 50+, so gear management has doubled.

For the love of our sanity, /my/ sanity, enough is enough.

We're not a year into HW yet...

Stop holding onto your old gearsets, for starters. If you need it again and it's not something the Armoire or Calamity Salvager has, just go farming.

I think part of the problem is caused by the design of the game having so many unessessary items in the first place. 5 grades of every damn thing? 200 different dyes rather than just using the color picker and a generic catalyst? Another 200 materia types again separated by grade.... It goes on and on. Now on its face, it's obvious why these items are like this. But there are just so many better ways to have handled them to similar effect without needing do many individual items.

Honestly if there's any one storage solution we need it's that glamour log. That would pretty much solve the problem for the majority of players. Saying to toss them and farm for them again later if you need them is NOT a solution as many of the sets are almost impossible to find groups to farm for now.

I know someone will soon come along citing Yoshi's spiel about how it would take up too much memory to give us a glamour log but anyone with even the slightest understanding of how such things work would know that this is simply not true. A glamour log would take up less space on the server than a retainer per player if they implemented it efficiently. Each entry in a glamour log would just be a single bit value, where most standard equipment has to be at least a few hundred bits in size. This would be the best solution to the storage problem and it is one pretty much every major MMO release offers now.

storage diversity is a weird way to put it? I also don't love your ideas tbh.

Frankly, I'd like Guild Wars 2's storage system.

There is a mat's inventory from anywhere you can right click your inventory "deposit collectibles" or something. This mats inventory can hold 250 of each material I believe.

There is a wardrobe system, so once you unlock a gear set you can just go to your wardrobe and select it to set it as your current glamour.

Then there is a dye system where you just unlock your colours and can dye galore. The best part? each item allows you to dye multiple parts of it so it's not 1 blanket colour.

There is a wallet that holds on to you all of your gold, dungeon tokens, and like 30 other things (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wallet)

Then you have your inventory and your bank which is shared account wide.

You know, it's coming up to two years since we got the extra Retainer "service", which I'm fairly sure was introduced with "We'll use the profits from this to expand players inventory". Still seemingly no progress on that, at least when they said "Mog Station will help us add more Housing Wards!", we actually got more Housing Wards (and we're getting even more in 3.3), we've seen absolutely no progress on inventory issues... Probably because they're making an additional $2/30days per person per retainer off ignoring the issue...

That's actually a really good idea, to remove some of the tiers. I don't know how viable it'd be with materia, but certainly catalysts, soils, orchestrion scrolls, and prisms. Not even just for storage, but so you don't have to remember what the hell grade goes with what item.

Those ideas have one thing in common - they require database space. SE want us to pay extra for more storage. We were told that SE's very poor server code struggles with extra retainer space and only an extra monthly payment will fix it apparently.

Some form of Wardrobe system would be ideal but we were told that's not on the cards.

A very good point! Rather than having 5 grades, why not require more of the same type? Same with crafting..there are so many different kinds of materials. The different dyes, would be nice to have only 3 or so, then mix and match to create the others. Just reducing these by 1/4 and requiring more of a certain material would help a ton.

These gear sets are insane. I really do not want to have to roll through Crystal Tower when people can't get through Bone Dragon without dying. Then again people go through crazier things to look good.

Neither of those are solutions to anything.

But you're quoting the solution right there!

"Go farm it again" isn't a solution. Lets apply that to other things we have a log for, just to highlight this stupidity;

We shouldn't have a mount log, we should have consumable items that we need to farm again, so you get Kirin once and need to farm a new set of ponies to get him again after you dismount!
We shouldn't have a minion log, when we use a minion item, that should summon it, and when we unsummon it, we should have to go buy the minion again!
Why do we have a orchestrion log? Those rolls should be consumables that play the song once then you need to obtain it again!

Would that be great for queues? No. I mean in theory it would, but in practice the game would be so inconvenient as a result that I doubt people will stick around for long. Convenience is the issue here, "Go farm Shiva (Extreme) another 5+ times for your weapon glamour!" is far from convenient. I'd much rather have new reasons to do old content, then have to keep doing Sastasha (Hard) ad nauseum for my parrot minion... Mounts, minions, and yes, gear, are all forms of achievements to "show off" in game. You might as well be saying "Our Achievements should reset each week so we have to redo them all!", people aren't going to play that game, and people aren't going to tolerate this games awful storage system as more and more gear gets added.

I'm always surprised by the people who are content with the storage in this game. Sure, people could whittle down their glamour items, or sell off mats that they aren't using every day for crafting, but that then causes a potential headache down the road. I personally loathe farming. Why would I want to toss it all out only to have to farm it again later? To keep me busy in game? As much fun as that sounds like it would be, I'll have to pass.

IMO, storage is one of those things that you shouldn't have to think about often. If it's done well, people move on and enjoy the game. With XIV, it's an aggravation to a lot of people (based on how often this thread comes up), so perhaps it's time they looked into making some adjustments.

Yeah, this is a big quality of life thing that needs improvement. Farming is already something I'd never spend my time on, and asking someone to do it TWICE for the same item is asinine.

It's not like the game is unplayable without more storage space, but it is really annoying having to go through and get rid of old rare items all the time because I keep running out of space.

Yeah i'm getting worried about this, i'm a newish player myself, only at level 44 on my highest battle class and level 25 on my highest crafter class, and i'm already feeling these inventory issues with the crafting mats alone, i can't even think of being a pack rat in this game or i'll need to start buying extra retainers.

I only have two retainers and they are full up most of the time and I am a Black Mage. My next highest class is Bard at 50. I have no Gathering class yet and my Hand class is Weaver at 20 and nothing else.

Part of the reason I have been so slow to level anything as a newish player is lack of space.

It is a bigger problem here than it has been in any other MMO for some very basic reasons:

1) Multiple classes on one character means multiple gear sets. There are 13 War classes and 11 Hand/Land classes.
2) Glamouring an item requires you to have the item in your inventory (at least I can't seem to glamour anything using items with my retainers)
3) There are multiple degrees of quality per item
4) Recipes require many items if you craft
5) Even if you have a class fully leveled you may not want to ditch your old gear because your retainer needs to be geared out too

All of this would be fine if storing items weren't so much of a problem.

Omni 60 crafter here and I survive with two retainers. It's just about learning what is important to keep and what needs to be liquidated.

Not that I won't welcome a better storage solution in the future the space crunch is real. If it means taking more time to load retainer inventories so be it but I'm not buying the server limitations excuse anymore. It's not my problem that they continue to bloat existing item counts without any resolutions for the current restrictions. As far as I'm concerned the developers are digging their own Graves here. Like the housing snafu I have no pity for them continually refusing to fix a broken system.

I think it's less of an expansion and more of a re-working the entire thing. Other games have done this, so it's not unfeasible to assume FFXIV won't.

I have to agree with Jynx. I was doing quite well on two retainers as an omni-crafter/gatherer. My difference is, I liquidate pretty much everything and start from scratch (I don't really have any rare or precious mats that I want to hold onto, at the moment, mind you).

Back when I was pack ratting everything, one retainer held the glamour and the cooking ingredients and the other held the rest.

I only just recently bought a third retainer as I'm starting to omni-level all my low alts and I'm saving literally all the gear, ever.

That said, I would LOVE it if we could turn our wardrobes into glamour closets. Right now, they're just non-functional decor, but how cool would it be to make them into another armoire, but for dungeon glamour?

Really though, Glamours and the Inn Armoire are what need fixing... My physical inventory is, for the most part, fine. I wouldn't pass up a Bait Box for Fishing, but for the most part I don't need more inventory space. I need more storage space. Having less Glamour Prisms (IMO they should function exactly the same as materia and self-repairs, I carry around a single stack of Grade 6 Dark Matter for my repairs, and that covers me for anything, needing specific types and specific tiers of Glamour Prism just pisses me right off...) and the ability to cast Glamours with items not in your inventory (if my retainer/Armoire has it, I have it, why the annoying extra task of having to go take it out?). Then just let us slap anything in the Armoire (and if I can Glamour without taking it out, I don't ever need to take anything out of it again) and we're done.

At the absolute least, they should give as a free 3rd Retainer at this point... Is that really asking too much? IMO the extra Retainers should never have been cash shop material, given that is a payed bonus (mine bring back ~3k/18h, in 30 days that's ~120k, essentially SE sells 120k for $2). Extra Retainers struck me as prime Veterans Reward material; Been playing for a year? Have an extra Retainer to hold all the crud you've accumulated! Nope, instead we got teleport tokens...

Bolded/underlined what I think is your biggest oversight on the matter. When it comes to QoL, if it's not halfassed or years late, it's not FFXIV.

IIRC Yoshi did mention sometime recently that they're working on an armoury set storage solution to handle future jobs. Not sure on the specifics beyond you basically being able to switch armoury sets in and out at your retainer. It's not ideal but it would somewhat deal with the issue of the armoury chest capacity with regards to future jobs.

Hey, I'm trying to be at least slightly optimistic here! :p

I dont really have much issue with storage myself. I feel like I do sometimes and then I look through and find a bunch of useless stuff that I don't need nor want anymore. Like old sets that I wouldn't use for glamour but I had for when I was leveling another tank or healer or something but I have all of those capped now so it doesn't matter. Then all of a sudden my storage is magically cleared out

I feel it is only really an issue if you are someone who hoards absolutely everything "just in case" it might come in handy or you MIGHT eventually want to use it for a glamour maybe someday
