With all these proposed changes to Gear, Remove Repair.

Seriously, I mentioned this in that Rep responded thread.


1. Gear will become Rank Locked over time and through Attrition. Optimal Rank gear will eventually completely disappear except to a few rare holdouts who hoard it. If it doesn't get removed from the databases all together in the future as well.

2. Materia will remove inventory from the Database as well because you will be turning it into Materia.

3. Equipment Damage only really hurts people wearing gear under optimal rank. and as deterring Zombie Rushing or Scaring people from dieing (Which it doesn't do that good a job of anyway.


With all 1 and 2 coming, There really is no reason to keep the Repair system to fulfill 3.

Instead, Implement a System where any Spirit Bond you have earned towards turning an item into Materia becomes damaged if you Die. And ONLY if you die.
Also make it so it is not restored if you are Raised.


This will deter people way more from Zombierushing and Fighting Harder to not die Then the current Repair System would.

Any reason to get rid of gear damage is a good one. The mechanic was good-intentioned and the spirit of it sounds nice, but it just doesn't, and never did, feel right in this game. Its implementation was completely ham-handed and based on that connotation I doubt I'll ever get used to it, no matter how much they "simplify" it.

And, while we're on that subject, why should I be happy that we only need to use one universal item if it's more expensive than every other repair mat, barring jade, ever was? I was so happy about dark matter BECAUSE I was sick of 40k for repairs when friends weren't - and now it's guaranteed 45k~50k even from a shellmate.

I agree whole-heartedly. Unnecessary, convoluted, should go. Better ways to do it.

Not really, because if you're fighting something that takes skill and you really have to do your best to not die, chances are you'll be wearing your "real" set of gear, not gear you're turning into materia.

Have Dieing include a chance to break Materia Spirit bond for any gear in your inventory or Retainers inventory. It would make sense its a "Spirit Bond" so dieing and being returned would have a major impact and damage to your spirit. Even if the armor is on the other side of the planet from you.

My goal is always to not die; if there are people who are purposely looking like bad players to exploit a tactic, that's an issue with the game design, not something you patch up with a mechanic that punishes the player for it -- again, imho.

Well, you can break Spiritbond in an Equipment like you can damage it, it doesn't make any difference, other than one being a frustration, and the other one being a frustration + gil sink. Well, not that much frustration, since you can ask people for repairs.

Umm.. can you explain the first part? About the Attrition.

They already said all gear introduced into the game from now on crafted or not will be rank locked and the recipies to make optimal rank gear will be removed. Only already made optimal gear will remain.

Ah what the hell, let's remove gear repair too. For God's sake it's so stressful now to die, but I'd still welcome repairs over EXP loss.

They were pretty brutal about "Gear percentage loss at this point = NOT CHANGING. EVER." which was disappointing as it's such a huuuge penalty, especially towards gear you're within rank to wear. If that were on gear which was not tailored to your class/rank I could see it being that cruel and then some.

But as it is, 'raiding' without high ranking crafters is a pain in the ass.

i hate repair systems, its honestly just as big of a pain and just as much of a time waster as EXP loss is. If anything im surprised they didnt take a page from one of the only other true MMOs on consoles...EQOA. I actually like the EXP debt system, you never "lost" exp, so you dont level down or loose your place, you just owe X amount of EXP. basically if i die and i owe 100xp...for all my fights half of my exp goes to the debt, the other half goes in normal (until its paid off, then you get the full 100%). Its harsh enough to stop you from killing yourself like exp loss, but not as harsh as reversing progress or worse, dropping a level.

Give me that any day over having to constantly check if my gear is working, having to stop, go find someone to fix it, take it off, set it in your bazzar (2 slots which is always lovely aint it?) with a reward and if your lucky get it fixed right away....or it can take a while. Or you pay out the @ss to get it to 75%.

If they ever did anything like this I would hope for it to be on a per-class basis.
But then I'd sacrifice one DoH or DoL (miner probably) for my blood porting.

Keep repairs imo.

Agree with the OP. Repairs make even less sense now that they're making all future armor or at least most of it use Required Rank instead of Optimal Rank. The reduction of spiritbonding upon death would still make you not want to die and fight with more caution.

Agree with you Zanfire.
Tho exp loss used to irritate me, I can honestly say between gear damage and exp loss, exp loss is the better and more viable option. It's less frustrating than having to continuously worry about your gear all the time and rely on high level crafters and head back city after a bit of play.
Exp loss to me also serves as a much bigger deterrent in regards to death. Makes you value life more, play more cautiously and skillfully and that contributes to the overall thrill factor in the game, atm i have little to no hesitation to worry about dying, and in the end exp can be easily made up. Repair on the other hand is a time sink and gil sink and disturbs focus in gameplay since it's ever ongoing and either forces you to level craft or rely heavily on others.

OP, agreed, more reason to ditch it. Down with repairs!

They won't add exp loss and they won't get rid of repairs. If they ever do it's a LONG time from now (like Abyssea to FFXI launch amount of time). Yoshida said himself they aren't doing XP loss. I don't like the repair system either, it's a waste of time BUT you have to use something as a penalty and wasting time is a good penalty for dying.

Let's remove gears altogether, so we don't have to worry about getting loot, crafting stuff, repairing damaged, materia, dying, playing the game.

Destroying materia is a much worse death penalty that ends in the same way EXP loss does, frustration and exasperation. Anything that makes you outright lose something you spent time obtaining doesn't create a friendly community. It would be the equivalent of destroying gear right now considering materia is converted gear.

All in all, no the repair system is fine. It gives us a reasonable death penalty that actually allows us to push limits without worrying about being kicked in the nuts repeatedly for dying.

Honestly that's an awful idea, you would rather get rid of damage gear and deal with lose of materia %? Is it really such a hard objective to repair gear or you know not die? Just deal with it, repairing gear is no big deal if you don't die and actually watch yourself. If you die then of course repairing gear is going to look bad.

Judging from the way things sound it appears that you won't even need 100% repair to turn the gear into materia. I really don't get why people want to remove gear, gear is basically the balance that eliminates the need to lose xp when you die? Are people saying they would rather lose xp then deal with having to repair damaged gear? Would you rather spend gil to repair an item or lose an hr+ of xp gains cause you died to many times?

I don't think the answer is to tough, durability is honestly a low penalty for dying and the aspect of repairing it is so easy. They've added so much to make traveling easier before even adding choco and airships. They've made anima teleporting cheaper as well as make return a 15 min timer rather then 1 anima. Also you now have a homepoint you can set so you know if your gear is breaking, return home repair the gear then just use 4-6 anima to return where you are. The only limit comes to how reckless you are. The more reckless you are the worse durability will look however the better you play you won't even notice the durability of gear til countless hours of gameplay til it decays on it own.

If you do this you just threw the whole 65%crafting 35%fighting out of the window. I definatly wont craft a dam thing if no one will buy it and I cant repair anything with it. And yes I like crafting but want more gear to craft, more reward, and no more gear from anything but crafters. Maybe just an item used by the crafters to craft your gear would be all that should drop.

I think this ideas a step in the wrong direction. It eats at the foundation of this game, and with a bad foundation youll just cause this game to crumble.
